I'm Jonathan Walton, and this is the Handyman of west Texas. Episode 3 Fix this and Then Me. Midland Odessa Driving through Midland, Texas is a unique experience. There's a relatively small downtown with a handful of skyscrapers that are constructed in the 1950s, 60s and 70s during a series of West Texas oil booms.

[Mickey]

Exxon Corporation holds the most land out of production here in Hector County. There are hundreds of thousands of acres just like this throughout West Texas held by the majors.

[Jonathan Walton]

But by the 1980s, a seismic oil bust bankrupts everyone and leaves most of Midland destitute and unemployed. Thousands lose their homes and more than 100 Texas banks fail. Then in 1987, Midland, Texas is thrust onto the world stage when Baby Jessica gets trapped in a well. 18 month old Jessica McClure fell 22ft down a dark shaft while playing at her aunt's backyard near Midland. Round the clock news coverage of Baby Jessica's perilous rescue goes on for three days. And the moment she's finally pulled safe and sound from that well is watched on live TV by millions of people all over the world.

[Mickey]

Here she comes. There's clapping. There she is. I see her eyes open. I think I see some dried blood on her cheek.

[Jonathan Walton]

Interestingly enough, it's oil field workers like Mickey who suddenly show up to help and drill down into the bedrock to create a rescue tunnel beside the well Baby Jessica is trapped in, enabling them to get her out alive. We never saw what it was like.

[Mickey]

In that tunnel, but we know from.

[Jonathan Walton]

The men who worked in it that it was hell. And then Midland, Texas bounces back from that infamous oil bust when the proliferation of fracking in 2010 creates a huge boom and West Texas suddenly becomes a major oil supplier for the entire world.

And frackers like Mickey are suddenly in high demand. But the extraction of oil and natural gas is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. Thousands of workers like Mickey get injured every year and a lot of them die as a result of those injuries.

It's a dangerous job and you kind of have to stay on your feet and eyes wide open, head swiveling, always know the dangers around you because it's a dangerous job.

[Jonathan Walton]

And making things even more dangerous is the fact that for the past seven days, Mickey's only been sleeping three hours a night before heading back to work in the oil field.

[Mickey]

I eat, shower, sleep, eat, shower, sleep.

[Interviewer]

Back in the field.

[Mickey]

That's it.

[Interviewer]

Yeah.

[Mickey]

Over time you get used to it.

[Interviewer]

Before we started recording, you were telling me you worked 100 hours overtime.

[Mickey]

Overtime.

[Interviewer]

This last so, so that's, that's a 40 hour workweek plus 100 hours overtime. And how do you stay up? Are you taking drugs? Like, how do you stay up like that?

[Mickey]

It's a lifestyle that you just get accustomed to. I've been doing it for 15 years. Definitely the new guys that are coming out, it's a lifestyle adjustment. It's, you know, and Some just tap out. They can't take it. They'll last a little while.

[Interviewer]

And they're like, I think I'll fall asleep. Asleep. Like in an oil well or something. Well, does that happen?

[Mickey]

The work doesn't stop, so you don't have a chance to fall asleep.

[Interviewer]

Oh, yeah. Because you're busy. It's not like you're standing up watching something. You're, like, doing, doing, doing.

[Mickey]

And my job is to make sure the guys don't fall asleep. So.

[Interviewer]

Yeah. How do you do that?

[Mickey]

Not. It's. It's definitely out of the realm of the real world. You can't yell at people in the real world. You can't throw stuff at people in the real world. Why do you.

[Interviewer]

You do you yell and throw stuff? Like, hey, wake up.

[Mickey]

Yeah. And, like, get the up. What are you doing? You know, grab that hammer. Go do this, go do that. You know?

[Interviewer]

Yeah.

[Mickey]

What do you. What are you, a piece of. Come on, stop being a little girl. Stop crying. Are you crying? I'm gonna get you a ride home. Those kind of things, which isn't really, you know, it's. It's oilfield life. Right. You know, it's a different mentality. And guys expect. Well, not expect it. They accept it.

[Interviewer]

Right.

[Mickey]

You know, because.

[Interviewer]

Yeah, you're just a bunch of guys in the middle of nowhere.

[Mickey]

And we have.

[Interviewer]

You're in danger, and you're in constant danger. Like, people die.

[Mickey]

It's a dangerous job, especially if you're careless. And so we don't allow carelessness and laziness because it'll get somebody hurt, get somebody killed.

[Interviewer]

And in Landman, there are a few deaths.

[Mickey]

Oh, no, no, no, no, no. He'll bleed out. Don't touch us.

Yes, I'm in a drilling rig off of County Road 137. I've got a white male in his 30s, and his body's been crushed. Oil fill pipe.

Am. Have you witnessed anyone die on your watch or.

[Mickey]

A couple guys over the years. Really, it was, you know, tragic incidences. And a lot of times they were things that couldn't be avoided. Other times they could have been, you know, just. Just people not taking care of themselves. Heat is a big thing, you know, in Texas, it gets up to 110, 115 degrees. You're wearing these coveralls that already add a layer of insulation so your body heat isn't releasing. And we're working 12 hours straight, you know, And I've seen a guy just. He just fell. Just fell dead on the spot.

[Interviewer]

Dropped dead of the heat.

[Mickey]

Yeah, he had a heat stroke and his heart basically just gave out. And he was a young guy. He was younger than me. He was in mid-30s. Other times there's been mechanical failures where a piece of machinery will come apart and someone's right next to it and, you know, they get. They get in the line of fire.

[Jonathan Walton]

But there's also a tremendous upside to Mickey's fracking gig. It pays really, really well.

[Interviewer]

I am curious. I mean, normally I wouldn't ask this because it's rude, but God, I know so many other intimate details of your life. I'm not worried. How much money are you making? Like this past week where you did 100 hours ot overtime. What's that weekly paycheck?

[Mickey]

It's like a $9,000 check.

[Interviewer]

$9,000?

[Mickey]

Yeah.

[Interviewer]

Wow. Dude, that's a lot of money.

[Mickey]

Yeah, it is.

[Interviewer]

In Texas.

[Mickey]

In Texas. And yeah.

[Interviewer]

Living in Texas in a lot of different Texas towns and municipalities. It's a lot cheaper because a. I live in California where we have a state tax.

[Mickey]

Yeah.

[Interviewer]

Texas has no state tax.

[Mickey]

No. So.

[Interviewer]

And cost of living is a lot cheaper. So $9,000 in one week.

[Mickey]

Yeah. You can live like king out there.

[Jonathan Walton]

Yeah.

Remember, Mickey has a two week on one week off work schedule, so his handyman extracurriculars take place during his week off. But at this point, he's only had one call and that one call turned into sex for money with a determined housewife very quickly. I mean, she knew exactly what she wanted out of the gate.

[Mickey]

It probably wasn't.

I haven't heard from in over a year.

I'm not sure they would.

There is this dichotomy at play where on the surface all these women are churchgoing and on the up and up conservative and wearing the Bible belt and. But beneath the surface, while their husbands are working hours and 100 hours a week or more, they're paying for sex.

Yeah.

While their friends are at church.

[Interviewer]

While their friends are at church. So did introduce you to any of her friends or how. Who was your next encounter?

[Mickey]

My next encounter was another woman that called and I. I don't believe that they were associated, but she was very much in the kind of same arena as me. She had a big home, Anglo woman, you know, maybe late 40s, early 50s, took care of herself, didn't have fake boobs. She had real boobs, which were nice. But she wasn't a friend of. I wasn't.

[Mickey]

No, no, I'm not sure.

[Interviewer]

Because if you're. And you. I want to share you with people.

Exactly. And so I kind of had a general idea that this was not going to be a handyman job per se. And sure enough, it wasn't.

So you go over there to Kathy and what is her. Her house. She's in a big house as well.

[Mickey]

She's in a big house and it's in a different neighborhood. But everywhere. Everywhere is kind of nearby. But it's a big home, not, not as gaudy. Doesn't have the pillars, but definitely over.

A million dollar home.

[Interviewer]

And when you get to Kathy's house, how sure are you that sex is gonna happen? Do you think there's somewhere in her kitchen she can't reach before I get there?

[Mickey]

I'm pretty sure that sex is gonna happen when I get there. I'm positive because she opens door and she's wearing hardly anything. Oh yeah, she has this. She's clearly not wearing a bra. She's wearing a night. A nightgown type top. And I'm pretty sure she's not wearing any underwear. And so she invites me in, big smile. As soon as the door closes, she gives me a big hug.

At this point, Mickey's had two clients total. That first woman and then the very next day the second woman Kathy, who answers the door half naked and somehow knows to give Mickey exactly $200 cash at the end without him asking or even setting a price.

I only saw Kathy two times after that first time.

And sometimes there's a mesh. Sometimes they want the work and have sex.

Yeah.

It's like, hey, I have to have a reason. I could tell my significant other that I spent this much money, so fix this and then fuck me or fuck me and then fix this, you know?
