Rory Scoville
Suck all that spit out of me.
Josh Dean
Campsite media. So your mouth is a very sacred space. You only allow two types of people access to it. Lovers.
Rory Scoville
This is an incredible start.
Josh Dean
And dentists.
Rory Scoville
That's right.
Josh Dean
And maybe your dentist is your lover, in which case they are very familiar with your canines.
Rory Scoville
Or like when a dog wants to give you a kiss, they just can't get away from your nose and your mouth and they stick their tongue into your Nostrils. And while it does feel bad, it is like it's cleaning it up in there. And so you. You allow it. Right. You were also going to say that.
Josh Dean
I was. I mean, you took the word for it out of my mouth. Are you good about going to the dentist?
Steph
No.
Josh Dean
Well, let's be honest. Do you floss regularly?
Rory Scoville
I don't. I hardly ever floss.
Josh Dean
Do you, like, brush?
Rory Scoville
All the time. But my issue is that I don't.
Josh Dean
Do you lie when they ask you when you. When you do go to the dentist?
Rory Scoville
No, because I know they're going to find out when they clean my teeth.
Josh Dean
When your gums just start bleeding profusely.
Rory Scoville
Exactly. And they're like, clearly you don't floss.
Josh Dean
I know. I feel like none of. No one actually does. We all get caught. Like, they're like, every time I. My entire life, every time I've been told I need to keep doing it, and I'm like, I promise next time I will.
Rory Scoville
I do start to, and then I just stop. I don't even. I don't know why. I actually kind of like it. It feels good, but I don't do it.
Josh Dean
I don't either.
Rory Scoville
Yeah. If it felt as arousing as using a Q tip, I would do it more often.
Josh Dean
So maybe it's a design issue with the floss.
Rory Scoville
I think it's a design issue, and I've said that since I was a kid.
Josh Dean
Let's talk to big floss. Let's get that fixed. So I ask all these important questions because today's episode is full of cautionary tales from people who. Who did not vet their dentists well enough before they opened their mouths.
Rory Scoville
Good.
Josh Dean
Take, for example, Monica Bailey, who lives in the Chicago suburbs close to Lane. She found her dentist, Dr. Monica Davis. Same first name. On social media, Dr. Davis claimed to be changing lives one smile at a time. At her Schaumburg, Illinois practice. The veneer experts. Bailey and her daughter both got braces from the veneer experts. Everything seemed fine. Their braces looked normal. But when Bailey went to make a follow up, she couldn't get a hold of Dr. Davis. One of her numbers was completely disconnected. The other just rang and rang and no one ever answered. So Bailey starts to do some digging. She discovers that her dentist had been arrested for practicing dentistry without a license in Las Vegas just a few weeks prior.
Rory Scoville
Oh, man.
Josh Dean
And when a real dentist looked at the braces she'd installed, she told Bailey that they were useless. They were purely cosmetic. She just, like, glued some stuff on her teeth. They weren't doing anything. Yeah, but the Baileys may have been lucky patients because another of the customers had his tooth chipped just days before he got his veneers. A third client's molar just fell out after her appointment.
Rory Scoville
Man.
Josh Dean
Monica Davis turned herself in the Schaumburg police after seeing a warrant for her arrest. In July of 2025, she pleaded guilty to performing dental procedures without a license, which is a felony. And yet another crime I'm learning about for the first time on this show.
Rory Scoville
Shame I never even considered.
Josh Dean
Seems like some bizarro one off crime. But no, Rory, America is lousy with fake dent. Today on Crimeless, we've got combination nail salon dental practices, suspiciously affordable veneers, and some actual clowns deployed in the practice of dentistry.
Rory Scoville
Great. I love it.
Josh Dean
That's all coming up this week on Crimeless. Welcome back to Crimeless, the podcast that celebrates the amazing creativity of the world's dumbest criminals, while also reminding you to floss the.
Brian
Yep.
Josh Dean
I'm Josh Dean. Yeah.
Rory Scoville
So there's health to it. And I'm Maurice Scoville.
Josh Dean
What's the most extreme dental procedure you've ever had?
Rory Scoville
Probably getting my wisdom teeth removed.
Josh Dean
Same.
Rory Scoville
Nothing crazy. I've never had braces or anything. So kind of.
Josh Dean
That wisdom teeth was no joke. I feel like I was, like, laid up for a couple days afterwards.
Rory Scoville
It's no joke. I definitely was laid up for a couple days and I was very out of it once I had it done.
Josh Dean
With the stuff packed into your gums?
Rory Scoville
Yep.
Josh Dean
Were you a kid or an adult?
Rory Scoville
I was adult, but kid adult. I was like, 20. Yeah, right.
Josh Dean
Right out of college. I think that's when I did it, too. So I don't love the dentist. In fact, I'm overdue for cleaning. And now after researching this episode, though, I've unlocked some new fears.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, me too.
Josh Dean
Because we found so many stories of people pretending to be dentists. There were so many to choose from, and they all made my skin crawl a little bit.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
So I'm going to share them with you so that your skin can crawl too.
Rory Scoville
Good.
Josh Dean
Thank you for sharing. But before we jump in teeth first, I want to go back a little bit because the history of dentistry is kind of weird and it actually explains why there are so many fake dentists out there. In the Middle Ages, the first people to practice dentistry would also cut your hair. They were called guild barbers, and they were more educated than your average haircutter. They were qualified to do dental surgeries and other Basic surgeries.
Rory Scoville
I do like this one stop shopping kind of thing here.
Josh Dean
I agree. Because I don't like getting my hair cut, but often feel like I want to get a haircut and I don't like going to the dentist or the doctor. So if I could combine multiple things that I don't like into one sitting, I think I would go more often.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, I agree.
Josh Dean
Let's bring this back.
Rory Scoville
Yep.
Josh Dean
So we would like to restore the era of hair cutters who also do dentistry.
Rory Scoville
Yeah. Yes.
Josh Dean
Those were simple times. So modern dentistry split from the hair salon in the 18th century in France, after the first scientific book on the practice of dentistry was published. Start training. Seriously. In Europe, when word got out about the colonies across the pond, dentists started immigrating. So dentistry in the US Is as old as our country. So we got very experienced dentists. The first native born dentist started practicing around 1780. And get this, Rory Paul Revere was a dentist.
Rory Scoville
Oh.
Josh Dean
He is considered America's first forensic dentist, in fact. Oh, yeah. So he didn't just ride around on a horse.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, that really gets buried under the saving portion of his heroism.
Josh Dean
He just gets credit for riding a long distance yelling that the British were coming. Exactly. Crimeless. Making you better at trivia since 2025.
Rory Scoville
How unfortunate to only be known for that heroic deed.
Josh Dean
What about my forensic dentistry?
Rory Scoville
That was the first.
Josh Dean
The world's first dental school was founded in 1840 in Baltimore. For the first time, you could earn your dds, Doctor of Dental Surgery and join the American Society for Dental Surgeons, the world's first national dental organ. So we have a rich history here.
Rory Scoville
Okay.
Josh Dean
In that era, America was home to 300 trained and certified dentists. The problem was the population was 17 million by then. So if you were lucky, your dentist was one of those 300. But more likely, the person extracting your tooth was a freelancer or. You're gonna love this term, Rory. A street dentist.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, I gotta say, street dentists, Freelance dentistry. These are. You are right. This is all unlocking new fears for sure.
Josh Dean
Street dentist. It's got a real ring to it, man.
Rory Scoville
Street. I'm a street dentist.
Josh Dean
So there were more than a thousand dental parlors in New York City by 1923. Each one basically just a pop up shop for getting your cavities drilled by some rando.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
So it was just like a bodega, I guess, but it did dentistry. A thousand of them.
Rory Scoville
Yeah. And you'd have no idea. You'd be like, I guess this one.
Josh Dean
Yeah. And probably the most questionable Dentist in history was probably a man named Edgar R.R. parker. His nickname was Painless Parker.
Rory Scoville
Oh, wow.
Josh Dean
He wasn't even a freelance dentist. He actually graduated from Philadelphia Dental College. But he was the bad boy of dentistry. You're gonna like this guy. BBD Rather than opening some fancy pants shop with his framed diploma on the wall, Painless Parker chose to work as a street dentist. So he had a degree, but he wanted to be a street dentist. He's like, that's just how I roll.
Rory Scoville
Yep.
Josh Dean
He wasn't a corporate sellout, so he's propositioning folks on the sidewalk. He could pull your teeth for 50 cents a tooth. You get five bucks back if it hurt. His trick, he injected the patient with watered down cocaine.
Rory Scoville
Okay, I actually like that.
Josh Dean
You can see why he was so popular.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, I mean, that's the guy I'm gonna go to. Give me something, you know?
Josh Dean
He also employed musicians to serenade and draw crowds in. In 1913, he partnered with a former employee of P.T. barnum and created a traveling dentist circus.
Rory Scoville
This guy gets it.
Josh Dean
He wore a top.
Rory Scoville
This guy truly gets it.
Josh Dean
He wore a top hat, coattails, and a necklace made of teeth.
Rory Scoville
The guy from Monopoly is a dentist,
Josh Dean
and he's injecting you with cocaine. And he's injecting you with cocaine.
Rory Scoville
Which I gotta assume is counterintuitive to having someone sit still with their mouth open.
Josh Dean
Yeah, you'd think maybe more of an opiate. Something that would chill you out.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, you would think. Not the high energy, get up and move type drink.
Josh Dean
The thing that makes people like, yeah,
Rory Scoville
I've got a knife in your mouth. You gotta stop.
Josh Dean
At his show, he'd plant a person in the audience and pretend to extract one of their molars. In reality, he'd already pulled a tooth, but to the audience, the procedure looked painless. Yeah, he had clowns, contortionists, a full band, all to distract very real patients who would climb on stage and into the chair after the fake patient. When the extraction did indeed turn out to be painful, Parker would tap his foot on the ground to signal the brass band to play louder to cover the screams and moans of the patient.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
Parker's traveling circus gained public attention and widespread scrutiny. In 1915, he was accused of breaking a false advertisement law by claiming that his practice was painless. So to skirt charges, he legally changed his first name to Painless. Yeah, so he was now a new person. Yeah, and he just continued the tour with the clowns in the band.
Rory Scoville
I mean, this guy's really thought of it all.
Josh Dean
His license was revoked in several states and he was constantly sued, but nevertheless, he persisted. He created a successful dental practice. He employed a dental staff of over 240 people, and he made more than $3 million a year.
Rory Scoville
Yep. There you go. And imagine what that was worth back then.
Josh Dean
Oh, my God. Yeah.
Rory Scoville
$3 million then had to be like a billion dollars.
Josh Dean
He was a titan of industry. His industry being like shady dentistry.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
Painless Parker paved the way for many dentists, both in raising awareness for shady practices, but also proving you can be successful even if you were unqualified at your job. God bless America. The land of opportunity. Yeah, we specialize in that.
Malcolm Glebel
Yes.
Josh Dean
You could argue we're run by people who are unqualified for the.
Rory Scoville
You could argue that.
Josh Dean
Now that I know about Painless Parker, the fake dentists of today need to brush up on their showmanship, in my opinion. Take for example, Yolani Mejia Carranza. She practiced as a dentist on Long island for eight years despite not having a single license.
Rory Scoville
Did you say eight years?
Josh Dean
Eight years. Yes.
Rory Scoville
Okay.
Josh Dean
No license.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
In 2025, investigators got a tip from some of her unhappy clients. When they searched the then 55 year old's home, they found she was running a fully functional dental practice. According to some patients, Yolani never used anesthesia. Say what you will about Painless Parker, at least he had the decency to give his clients a little bump of
Rory Scoville
coke, at least a little cocaine, and not upcharge him for it.
Josh Dean
She was just pulling her teeth.
Rory Scoville
It's only just now occurring to me I've never asked to see my dentist license. And now that will be the first thing I ask when I walk in. Show me your legal status.
Josh Dean
Right, Your diploma.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, show me. You've earned this.
Josh Dean
Carranza is facing three counts of unauthorized practice of a profession. She's pleading not guilty to the charges and is, as of this taping, out of jail on supervised release. Okay, next we have Isidro de Jesus Mujeres, who was arrested in 2017 in San Antonio after performing an eight hour dental procedure in his home.
Rory Scoville
Eight hours?
Josh Dean
According to mysanantonio.com, a website I'm sure you read every day.
Rory Scoville
Yes, go on.
Josh Dean
The patient was given anesthesia 12 times for two extractions and something involving a grinding tool. She spent eight hours in the chair and Isidro didn't even bother to hire a clown. 8 hours, 12 times.
Rory Scoville
Holy shit.
Josh Dean
You might wonder after the third time,
Rory Scoville
second time, that person was in a saw movie and they didn't know It Real Life Saw.
Josh Dean
This may have been the case. That inspired Saw.
Rory Scoville
That was RLS dude. That was real Life saw right there. Oh, my God.
Josh Dean
Jokes aside. So the patients of these quacks are legit victims. Scam artists prey on those who don't have insurance. And they get often left with botched medical procedures that cost thousands to fix.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, and they're probably in a lot of pain.
Josh Dean
And social media is playing a big part in these scam artists. They advertise low cost veneers, which are all the rage these days. Do you have veneers?
Rory Scoville
Yep, I do I have them or do I know about them?
Sponsor/Ad Voice
Do you have them?
Rory Scoville
Do you have. No, I don't have them. Not yet.
Josh Dean
Not yet.
Rory Scoville
My dogs had to have a lot of teeth removed. I want to get some veneers for my dog.
Josh Dean
To be quite honest, he just gums his food.
Rory Scoville
He still has some teeth, but he's a tiny dog. And all I'm learning is that tiny dogs don't retain their teeth for. For very long.
Josh Dean
You need to take him to one of these street dentists.
Rory Scoville
Well, now that I know about them, yeah.
Josh Dean
If you go online, you'll probably find a lot of people who claim to be veneer technicians. But here's some news. You can use a crimeless psa. Veneer technicians don'. Exist. It's not a real license. You can.
Rory Scoville
Okay, there you go.
Josh Dean
So veneer must be put in by a licensed dentist to be above board. Of course, that does not stop folks from setting up shop. Emily Martinez. Spelled E, M, E, L, Y, by the way. Big red flag there. That's not how you spell Emily.
Rory Scoville
Such a red flag right there, dude.
Josh Dean
She ran a strip mall beauty bar in Pinellas Park, Florida. Florida. We had to get back to.
Rory Scoville
I knew. I was like, how long till we get home again?
Josh Dean
We are. She did nails, lashes, and also veneers. Yeah, she may have pulled teeth in the back of her salon as well.
Rory Scoville
Good, good, good.
Josh Dean
So dental veneers cost between 800 and 2500 per tooth. She charged 2500 for a full set. A real lesson and you get what you pay for. Or be real wary of a bargain when it comes.
Rory Scoville
I mean, that's just. I did not know about this underground dentistry world.
Josh Dean
You're learning a lot on this show.
Rory Scoville
This is. This really is shocking me. This episode.
Josh Dean
Her specialty. She applied veneers using nail glue.
Rory Scoville
Okay. It's. God fucking hell, man. I literally already don't like regular license allowed to be doing this dentistry. I didn't Know, fake dentistry was even, like, an option I've lived in. I've lived in such a shielded world.
Josh Dean
You didn't know how many people out there were getting their veneers put on with nail glue.
Rory Scoville
No. Oh, my God.
Josh Dean
At least two clients suffered serious infections and disfigurements. And other patients said they needed emergency surgery after getting their teeth super glued, man. Martinez was charged with scheme to defraud and multiple counts of practicing dentistry without a license. A charge that is used surprisingly often for one that I've never heard of before.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
So I gotta say, these veneer technicians turn out to be everywhere. There's Brandon Dillard in Atlanta. He ran a list, Smiles, which looked very legitimate. He had 157,000 followers on Instagram and did veneers for influencers and reality TV stars. He even taught classes on how to become a veneer tech. He made $4 million until he got arrested in October 2024. Because, say it with me, folks, he wasn't a real dentist.
Rory Scoville
He was not licensed.
Josh Dean
Not a real dentist.
Rory Scoville
It does sound like maybe he was doing a pretty good job, though.
Josh Dean
I mean, but do influencers have good judgment? Reality TV stars?
Rory Scoville
I don't know.
Josh Dean
Apparently not. I don't. Not when it comes to choosing a dentist.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
His victims complained of chipped and broken teeth, abscesses, tooth pain, nerve damage, discoloration, and more, according to an indictment.
Rory Scoville
Okay, I take back what I just said.
Josh Dean
In a Facebook group called Get Yo Teeth Done, Sis, where women discuss dental glow ups, a woman named Shade posted, Did anyone ever go to a list in Atlanta? He messed my teeth up so bad. Which was how a whole group of people discovered that Dillard wasn't an actual dentist.
Rory Scoville
Oh, man. After all, see, the chat rooms do present some level of justice.
Josh Dean
Exactly. Because one woman commented. Oh, shit. Oh, shit.
Rory Scoville
Oh, fuck. Oh, fuck. I went to that guy. I'm an influencer. And what that means is I influence others. But what it reveals is that I'm also easily influenced.
Josh Dean
Another commented, brandon did mine and went to jail before my next appointment for my two bridges I paid for. I'm pissed about the bridges, but to be honest, he did a really good job with my veneers.
Rory Scoville
See, some of them gotta be pretty decent.
Josh Dean
Yeah, let's. Like a glass half empty guy.
Rory Scoville
Josh, how many customers could you have where you think you could confidently pretend to be a dentist?
Josh Dean
0. 1.
Medical/PSA Announcer
I mean,
Josh Dean
no way.
Rory Scoville
You would even. You would be like, I don't even know where to start.
Josh Dean
I guess you would have to study. Yeah, Well, I know you put on, like, the face mask thing and the. The little biblical.
Rory Scoville
Okay. So you got some of it, and
Josh Dean
you get the, like, that little thing that, like, very painful water pick that, like, makes your gums bleed.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
How to wield that, I think.
Rory Scoville
Yep. Yeah, yeah. The thing that could cut concrete, but for some reason, we have it on our enamels.
Josh Dean
One of my biggest complaints, as long as we're. Now, this is the complaint portion of our. Like, let's. Let's. Let's bitch about dentistry was like, why they give you the tiny cup to rinse with. It's so small.
Rory Scoville
I know.
Josh Dean
And it's never enough water.
Rory Scoville
Yeah. And now they just leave the suck thing in your mouth.
Josh Dean
That's kind of gross.
Rory Scoville
It's kind of gross. But I will say, when all the buildup's happening, I'm like, suck all that spit out of me.
Josh Dean
I suppose it's satisfying because you're not choking anymore.
Rory Scoville
That's right.
Lane Rose
Yeah.
Rory Scoville
There's. There's ups and downs.
Josh Dean
So this guy Dylan, he faced 113 charges, including but not limited to insurance fraud, theft, drug possession, commercial gambling, and also a RICO charge. I don't know how it's rico, but when in doubt. Yeah, let's add rico.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, Yeah. I love. I love it when rico's at it.
Josh Dean
He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
After the break, a crimeless investigation into this week's burning question. Why are the fake dentists kind of unstoppable?
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
Dun, dun, dun.
Malcolm Glebel
Hello. Hello, this is Malcolm Glabel from Smart talks with IBM. Today. We're diving into a fascinating conversation with Stefano Pallard, head of fan development for Scuderia Ferrari hp.
Brian
Your pronunciation is strongly American. It's more Scuderia Ferrari.
Malcolm Glebel
I'm still working on rolling my R's, but what I was able to learn from Stefano was the importance of engaging the Tifosi, the Ferrari superfans. In the digital age.
Brian
Ferrari fans and super fans want to be part of something, want to belong to something. So they want to be part of a community, and ultimately they want to be part of a winning team.
Malcolm Glebel
You've got Ferrari, which has a long history, design history, and now you're interacting in a kind of digital space. I'm curious how you balance those two traditions.
Brian
When it comes to fan engagement, it's really digital technology, and digital channels are being able to create a deeper connection with our fans.
Malcolm Glebel

Welcome back. Before we dive into the fake dentist epidemic that's plaguing our nation, it's important to point out that we're not the only country with insane problems like this.
Rory Scoville
Oh, thank God.
Josh Dean
In 2010, the Italian Dentist association found that 1 in 5 dentists in Italy is unqualified. In one case, a dentist in Rome turned out to be a plumber who had been filling and extracting teeth for 20 years.
Rory Scoville
Can I ask you a question? When they say nine out of 10 dentists agree, is that one dentist who doesn't agree? Not actually.
Josh Dean
It would be 10 out of 10. But one of them is not a dentist.
Malcolm Glebel
Right?
Josh Dean
That was four out of five.
Rory Scoville
I think four out of five dentists agree. One of them not technically a dentist, but we did ask them, so we have to proceed as though they are a dentist.
Josh Dean
I can't find any updates for the most current state of dentistry in Italy, but I did find this story from 2021. Italian dentist presents fake arm for vaccine to get pass. So Dr. Guido Russo tried to trick nurses with a silicone arm to avoid getting the COVID 19 shot.
Rory Scoville
I mean, how dumb do you think medical professionals are? Like, they have to find a vein
Medical/PSA Announcer
or.
Josh Dean
No, I guess they just push it
Rory Scoville
into your arm for that.
Josh Dean
But I assume they know what an arm feels like.
Rory Scoville
I think they would know what skin feels like, especially when they go to clean it. I know the area for the jab.
Josh Dean
Well, it didn't work, Rory. So I think, man. Our man, who was a real dentist, presumably, but a bad vaccine denier.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Josh Dean
Meanwhile, a bit further east in the Czech Republic, we found a dentist and two assistants were charged back in 2021. The heartwarming twist. It was a family pract. A 22 year old, along with his mom and dad spent two years running a fake dental clinic out of their home.
Lane Rose
Huh.
Josh Dean
So if you guys ever looking for a side hustle, your wife, your daughter, the three of you, that could be fun.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, Play some music. Hire a band to play while we're doing it.
Josh Dean
Exactly. Inject cocaine into people.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, do a little coke, little nose candy for the clients.
Josh Dean
So the son was the dentist. He attended the school of YouTube and learned to work on Teeth by watching tutorial videos.
Rory Scoville

Mom ran the anesthesia and sourced the materials while dad made the prosthetics. They had dozens of patients who got root canals extractions and filling. Imagine a root canal from a fake dentist.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, I mean, imagine one from a real dentist. Who knows what they're doing.
Josh Dean
True. I'm terrified of root canals. And the family made over 185,000 before getting caught. They face a slew of charges. Operating in illegal business, attempted assault, theft, drug dealing, money laundering. All three of them pleaded guilty. And if they're convicted, they face up to eight years in prison.
Rory Scoville
Okay, just let you know, Josh, for the sake of storytelling, you really buried the lead with all the other stuff this family clearly is up to. Oh, the fake dentistry. But then also weapons manufacturing, drug dealing, dog fight organizing.
Josh Dean
They're running a cock fighting ring.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
I have a feeling like the assault may just be a charge for. Like you did root canals on people that you weren't qualified for.
Rory Scoville
Yeah. I would categorize that as assault.
Josh Dean
And the drug dealing was probably. You're also not a doctor and you're giving people anesthetics.
Rory Scoville
That's.
Josh Dean
I mean, dangerous.
Rory Scoville
Like, I mean, you could kill somebody.
Josh Dean
They could have killed somebody.
Lane Rose
Yeah.
Josh Dean
They did not notably. There were no reports of complaints from patients in this case. So maybe the kid was a dental savant.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
Maybe the school of YouTube is an acceptable dental university.
Rory Scoville
But also, keep in mind, you, you're like, ah, the dentist said it's good and they should know. I don't know.
Josh Dean
The president of the Czech Dental chamber told the BBC that there was an average of 10 fake dentist cases a year in the Czech Republic. So this is not. Definitely not just our thing.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, I mean, that feels good to know that everywhere's kind of got to deal with this.
Josh Dean
It's impossible to compare it to our fake dental crisis because there's no database to track this sort of thing. It falls on the individual states to respond to complaints, investigate, and charge the fakers. Which is why you have people who can get arrested in one state, post bail, and start over in a different part of the country. Like the lady at the top who was arrested in Las Vegas and then moved to Chicago.
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
Sometimes you don't even have to leave the state to skirt around the laws. Like non dentist Tom Elam in Arizona. I believe we have a video.
Steph
The only billboard advertises for denture adventure on one side and the 7th street laundry and showers on the other. The phone number is the same for both that's because the same guy, Tom Elam, is running them out of the same building.
Josh Dean
We just make the dentures.
Steph
Are you licensed to do that?
Josh Dean
You don't have to be licensed in the state of Arizona.
Steph
Turns out he's right.
Josh Dean
We're a dental lab. We just make the prosthetic.
Rory Scoville
Yes.
Josh Dean
We don't go into the mouth. We don't work in the mouth.
Steph
How are you trained to do this?
Rory Scoville
Well, I worked for a dentist for
Medical/PSA Announcer
years in my twenties.
Josh Dean
My father in law was a dentist in Arizona.
Steph
That's enough. Because the state doesn't regulate dental labs and their techs. That means no one is checking Elam's criminal background. Arizona's family investigates, finding police arrested him for selling meth out of the laundromat in 2014. Elam also charged with trafficking and stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Josh Dean
All right, I just.
Rory Scoville
Can I just say something?
Josh Dean
Sure.
Rory Scoville
All those dentures looked real good.
Josh Dean
You're impressed with his craftsmanship.
Rory Scoville
I think he actually would be licensed. Like, he did look like he knows his shit.
Josh Dean
There was just a small problem of selling meth out of his laundromat.
Rory Scoville
And look, we all have a blemish on our permanent record somewhere. His happens to be selling meth out of a laundromat and trafficking.
Josh Dean
The sign was also, he needed to work on his graphic design a little bit.
Rory Scoville
I like. That's what you were rubbing up against, the typography.
Josh Dean
Well, the teeth were hand painted, but you're like one. I saw his actual handiwork. You're right. That was pretty good. But the teeth, the hand painted teeth on the sign, I don't. I can't go to a dentist with hand painted teeth.
Malcolm Glebel
I'm sorry.
Josh Dean
Yeah.
Rory Scoville
If it seems like you. You don't know what teeth are supposed
Josh Dean
to look like also when it's also a laundromat. I'm not super stoked on that.
Rory Scoville
Like, yeah, you don't want your lab to be in a laundromat.
Josh Dean
I love that. His qualifications, according to him were that his father in law was a dentist. Yeah, I was not a dentist, but my father in law was.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, I worked for a dentist in my 20s. My father in law was a dentist. Oh, all right.
Josh Dean
Well, yes, by those standards, I'm qualified to run the international marketing department for various large tobacco companies. My father in law's job. What does yours do?
Rory Scoville
Real estate. So I could just sell commercial real estate.
Josh Dean
Oh, you could do that.
Rory Scoville
I kind of like that faith you
Josh Dean
have in me, Tom. Elam admitted to the cameras there that he had served time in jail, but not for what you think. He said it was related to solar panels, but the court records show that he was selling meth out of his laundromat. He pleaded guilty and was given seven years probation. But the meth is beside the point. When a concerned local dentist alerted the Arizona Board of Dentists about some shady practices at Denture Adventures.
Rory Scoville
Great name, by the way. Denture Adventure is fantastic.
Josh Dean
I agree. I tick points for the sign, but I like the name. Yeah, they said, unfortunately, the information we were provided did not indicate the lab technician was doing dentistry. Arizona Family, the news organization we were watching there, grilled the executive director of the state board. I believe we have a video of that, too. Lane, is that right?
Steph
Do you think that the board is doing enough to warn the public about those people?
Josh Dean
I don't know what the board would do to warn people.
Steph
As part of a new law, health boards are now required to verify complaints of unlicensed providers and refer them to county attorneys or the attorney general's office. They're also required to post the names of imposters on their websites. But when we check the dental board website, no. No one was listed. Is it something that you see value in because it's sort of hidden on the website? You'd have to almost know what you're looking for to find it.
Josh Dean
I think it's like that on most websites. That guy did not prepare at all for that interview.
Rory Scoville
Why wouldn't this guy want to protect the customers? Also, someone tell the news organization, I don't need the sound effects of the typing. I don't need the typing, and I don't need the whooshes of the paper coming in.
Josh Dean
I mean, that guy seemed like he had no idea what questions they were gonna ask him. I was like, oh, you and your gotcha questions.
Rory Scoville
That guy. This might go deeper than just the dentist. That guy might be an imposter of someone who works for the Council of people who protect people of Arizona. I know.
Josh Dean
She's like, well, when I go to that page, there's nothing there. Just like most websites, right?
Rory Scoville
And he's like, I think all websites function as a. As a scam, right?
Josh Dean
I mean, literally did not prepare at all for that. It's like, I did not expect. Whoa. With these gotcha questions asking me.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, sorry. I didn't know you were coming at me in this thing that you told me you'd be asking me about.
Josh Dean
And she was like, could you not certify Like, I don't know. Why would we do that?
Rory Scoville
Yeah.
Josh Dean
So ultimately, the county attorney's office stepped in, and Apache county charged Tom with practicing dentistry without a license, which is a classic felony, according to court records. He took a plea deal, ended up serving no jail time. Maybe he can now focus on doing what he loves the most. Selling meth out of his laundromat.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, I mean, that's good. You're gonna make more money doing that.
Josh Dean
I would think so, yeah. This brings us to the final portion of the show. Before we wrap up, I think Lane wants to check our dentist credentials. We're gonna bleep out the real names. We're gonna run your dentist through the state dental board website. Do you know the name of your dentist?
Rory Scoville
No. Well, because I'm new to dental.
Josh Dean
Oh, fair, fair, fair.
Rory Scoville
I have gone to this dental practice that I've gone to, and they have. That dentist has left that practice, and there's now a new dentist there. But it seems like such a intense, massive setup that I would be shocked to find it was fake.
Lane Rose
Do you have a name?
Rory Scoville
I don't know. I don't know any of this.
Lane Rose
What about a former dentist?
Josh Dean
Well, dude, we could do mine. Lane. All right, his name is good news, guys.
Lane Rose
He's licensed.
Rory Scoville
All right, he is licensed as of 1990.
Josh Dean
Okay, good, good, good. All right, so I'm safe.
Rory Scoville
You're safe.
Josh Dean
Rory has not picked a dentist yet, so use this website.
Rory Scoville
I don't know my dentist name, which is not. Doesn't bode well for me in this scenario.
Josh Dean
Let's look up Ewan.
Lane Rose
Yeah, Ewan was yours. Okay. Oh, thank God. She's also licensed.
Josh Dean
All right, we're good.
Rory Scoville
Josh Dean
Two for two. All right, Lane, you want to put yours in?
Lane Rose
Yeah, let me see.
Josh Dean
So there is a website. Is this our public service? People can look this up on the Internet, Lane.
Lane Rose
Yeah, you can just go to your state's, like, government website, maybe.
Josh Dean
Not Arizona's state dental board, though. No, that guy did not seem like he was going to vet them very thoroughly.
Lane Rose
I'd definitely been to a dentist that's not registered, so.
Josh Dean
Oh, Lane's been to a fake dentist.
Lane Rose
I'm, like, 90% sure he was not registered.
Rory Scoville
This is traumatizing for.
Josh Dean
Yeah, no, I mean, did he give you cocaine?
Lane Rose
No, but he, like, offered to, like. He's like, I don't need to drill that tooth, but I could if you wanted me to. And I was like, no, absolutely not.
Josh Dean
Definitely what you want in a. In a medical professional is asking you for your opinion. I could take that out if you want me to. I don't need to necessarily. After the break, our final segment in which we take to the streets of New York and perform dentistry ourselves.
Rory Scoville
Lane's dental edition.
Lane Rose
We're counting our teeth.
Malcolm Glebel
Hello. Hello, this is Malcolm Glebel from Smart talks with IBM. Today, we're diving into a fascinating conversation with Stefano Pallard, head of fan development for Scuderia Ferrari hp.
Brian
Your pronunciation is strongly American. It's more Scuderia Ferrari.
Malcolm Glebel
I'm still working on rolling my R's, but what I was able to learn from Stefano was the importance of engaging the Tifosi, the Ferrari superfans in the digital age.
Brian
Ferrari fans and super fans want to be part of something, want to belong to something. So they want to be part of a community and ultimately they want to be part of a winning team.
Malcolm Glebel
You've got Ferrari, which, which is a long history, design history, and now you're interacting in a kind of digital space. I'm curious how you balance those two traditions.
Brian
When it comes to fan engagement, it's really digital technology. And digital channels are being able to create a deeper connection with our fans.
Malcolm Glebel

This is crimeless. Hello and welcome back to Crimeless. Sorry, we've been under the anesthesia performed by our fake dentists. Lane, what do we have this week? Or Rory, actually, what are we doing? I'm sorry, I'm groggy.
Rory Scoville
I'll tell you what we're doing. Lane's Games Dental Edition.
Lane Rose
What's a dentist's favorite time of day?
Rory Scoville
Tooth decay? I don't know.
Lane Rose
Tooth hurdy. That's Tooth hurt.
Malcolm Glebel
Hurdy.
Josh Dean
Tooth hurdy.
Lane Rose
You guys have never heard that one before?
Malcolm Glebel
No.
Lane Rose
Okay, well, in the spirit of that classic joke that apparently is news to you guys, I've got a game dedicated to historic moments in history. You just need to tell me what time the event took place. For example, the Hindenburg airship burst into flames in May 1937, but that was at 7:25pm local time.
Josh Dean
You think we'll know these times?
Lane Rose
Maybe.
Josh Dean
Rory, how confident are you in this?
Lane Rose
What?
Rory Scoville
I'm sorry, I'm. What? Sorry, what's happening?
Lane Rose
There's not really a huge tie in other than Tooth hurty.
Rory Scoville
Oh, okay.
Josh Dean
The punchline being a time we have to know, I guess what time of day these famous events took place.
Lane Rose
Okay, okay, first one. What time did the first plane strike the World Trade Center?
Rory Scoville
I cannot. How can this be a game, Lane? Who are you? Who have you become? Oh, I have no idea. I'm not going to get any of these.
Josh Dean
It was like 7:45pm or a.m. a.m.
Rory Scoville
Okay, what if he didn't Know that.
Lane Rose
That'd be crazy. It was 8:46.
Josh Dean
Gosh, I was close.
Rory Scoville
Gosh, would have been like 11:30 at night.
Josh Dean
Yeah, I knew it was early morning. Okay, Lane, really starting us off with a heavy one.
Lane Rose
Yeah, we're gonna work backwards. What time did the first transatlantic wireless message. What time was that sent?
Rory Scoville
Here we go. A little more G rated.
Lane Rose
1901.
Rory Scoville
In 1901, that was sent at 12:52pm
Josh Dean
it was at 4:00pm Roy Roscoe was 12:30pm oh, you were very close, Rory.
Rory Scoville
I just felt it.
Josh Dean
Yeah.
Lane Rose
What time did the Titanic hit the iceberg?
Rory Scoville
Motherfucker, I just watched Titanic.
Josh Dean
It was dark, wasn't it?
Rory Scoville
It was nighttime. I'm gonna say 9:37pm I'm gonna go
Josh Dean
11:30pm 11:40pm Josh was ghosting. Oh, we're getting so close to these.
Rory Scoville
Wow. I just remember that Rose and Jack were, you know, up on the. They had just made love in a. In a car down in the storage facility. That's all I know.
Josh Dean
He hadn't just drawn her like one of his French girls.
Rory Scoville
Well, he drew her, and then they went and had sex.
Josh Dean
Oh, yeah, he drew her first.
Lane Rose
Yeah. What time was John Lennon shot?
Josh Dean
Oh, that was like, broad daylight.
Rory Scoville
That was broad daylight. I'm gonna go 2:15. No, I'm gonna go 11:20am I think
Josh Dean
that's a good guess. I'm 11:30, 10:50pm What?
Rory Scoville
Oh, I thought it was during the day.
Josh Dean
What was he doing in Central park at night?
Lane Rose
Living his life.
Rory Scoville
Well, it wasn't in Central Park. It was at his. The Dakota, I think. Isn't that where he lived? The Dakota?
Lane Rose
It was outside his apartment.
Rory Scoville
I thought it was outside his, like, condo. Fancy apartment. Apartment. Condo place he lived. Ritzy spot.
Lane Rose
All right. Both Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer and Prince William and Kate are married at the same time.
Josh Dean
High noon.
Rory Scoville
Does it always have to be because of the ceremony that it has to happen at 1pm 11:20am why?
Lane Rose
I don't know.
Josh Dean
You know, I don't know why. That would have asking too much for you to know why.
Lane Rose
Yeah, I know. I didn't go that deep. All right, this one's a tie in to a previous episode, the Canoe Man. John Darwin walks into a London police station and claims to be a missing person with amnesia. What time did he walk in?
Josh Dean
10:15am 8:00am 5:30pm why would we know that, Lane?
Lane Rose
I don't know.
Josh Dean
Why is that? That's the guy who played video games in. In the Airbnb.
Lane Rose
He was the One who?
Rory Scoville
Canoe, man.
Lane Rose
Maybe it was.
Josh Dean
He faked his death. His wife cooperated in his fake death.
Lane Rose
Yeah, yeah.
Josh Dean
And yeah, I love that story. And he ran into his brother and pretended not to recognize him.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Josh Dean
We may be blurring all the stories together. It's very possible.
Lane Rose
Last one. Don't look. What time is it right now?
Rory Scoville
Where I am, it's 12:20 here.
Josh Dean
It's almost 1:58.
Lane Rose
No, it's my time. 1:05. So that would be.
Rory Scoville
Yeah, it's 12:02:05 here.
Lane Rose
Nice job, guys.
Rory Scoville
Well, then you were closest. Josh was closest.
Lane Rose
That's true.

Episode Theme:
A hilariously alarming deep dive into the world of unlicensed dentists and wild dental scams, exploring why fake dentistry is more common than you’d expect, how these fraudsters get away with it, and why you should always check your dentist's credentials.
This episode exposes the bizarre, disturbing, and sometimes oddly impressive underworld of fake dentists in America and beyond. Rory and Josh recount true stories ranging from street dentistry, cosmetic scam clinics, and meth-dealing denture makers to a family-run YouTube-educated dental practice in Eastern Europe. They unpack the historic and regulatory reasons America's oral health is at risk—from the days of barber-surgeons to today’s social media scam artists—and share practical advice for listeners (“Look up your dentist!”).
