So I wanna make you laugh, Chloe. So Mandy and I knew we had to. And for anyone listening, basically, when you interview someone about something that just came out, you watch what's called a screener. So it's a private link you get sent and it's fun and it feels secret. And I was like, oh, okay, let's just watch it. And I was excited to see you, but I was really more excited to talk to you once the sex happened.

We started texting each other. I said, okay, bitch, we eight minutes.

It was. I. I need to know. Seeing the script even, what made you be like, yup, this for me, like, stepping out the gate, getting onto the big screen. What made you want to play this character?

[Laila]

I love how Laila, one, she loves music. So that was something I already could relate with her on, you know? And I just loved the sophistication of a black female violinist. And I also loved the tea. I live for the mess. It was quite toxic.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

It was mess.

[Laila]

The twists and the turns were giving toxic. They were giving mess.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

Now, I know you play the piano and keyboard. Do you play any other instrument besides those?

[Laila]

So in fifth and sixth grade, I played the violin. I played for two years. Oh, wow. And then I changed out orchestra for choir.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

Okay.

[Laila]

And so when I had to relearn, you know, certain fingerings and things like that so that it could be as accurate as possible, it was like, oh, I've done this before. Let me try to get used to it again. So it was really nice. You know, we had wonderful music tutors that, you know, not only I worked with, but the little girl Romy worked with. So she was actually playing, you know, the piano. So I really appreciated that. Cause I'm the one to, like, call out, like, get that not matching.

[Host 2 (Weezy)]

Oh, wow.

[Laila]

So I'm happy that Malcolm the director cared so much about making the musical element as accurate as possible as well.

[Host 2 (Weezy)]

It's great to see elevated black movies. Now, not to make you laugh, when you said finger. And I was like, I don't know if you've ever heard of our show, Chloe. It used to be called Horrible Decisions, but we're a little more refined, like Laila, period. And one of the things that I really enjoyed watching it was just seeing wealthy black families. And I'm curious, like, when you were doing that as a kid, was it an elitist crowd when you were playing the violin? Was it different? Like, we very rarely get to see, you know, in an orchestra of black men and women. So yet what was that experience? Like?

[Laila]

I was very fortunate because my nerdy self got my behind in a magnet school, so. And it was a very diverse magnet school. It was like, you saw a lot of black people, a lot of Indians, Asians, everybody. Of all ethnicities. So it was like, that's what my orchestra class was. And it was a huge melting pot of really like minded, strong, smart individuals. So I'm really grateful for that. That, you know, you don't get the stereotypical versions of who people think all of us might be. That we all flourish no matter what, when you give us the possibility and chance to.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

I agree. I will say, however, in the film, everybody sucked in terms of, like, how they acted and moved. Like, not actually acted. I'm saying everyone had poor character flaws throughout the film. And I was just like, Layla had some. Oh, no, no, no, girl. I thought, I'm actually mad. Stayed alive at the end. I said, you know what if she would have got her ass whooped? She didn't get her ass beat. Cause she needed her ass whooped. I'm not gonna lie.

[Host 2 (Weezy)]

Actually, Chloe, I would like to read you Mandy's and I's text messages during watching the film. Just to give you a little laugh.

No, we were watching it like we were on a movie date. And I will say the first line that had me in was you saying, I normally don't do this now, girl, maybe this time.

And one of the things that I was wondering was like, is it more awkward to sit in the room and talk about it than it is to actually act and do the scene?

So it was like a little workshop of rehearsal. So we had stunts in one room, then we had intimacy workshop, then we had acting rehearsals, things like that. I have some feisty components, but for the most part, I'm quite shy and, and quite reserved.

On stage, it's the opposite. But you know me on an everyday. I couldn't stop giggling, so I was laughing and giggling the whole time.

But also, she was turning me on. Ten minutes ago, I actually told Mandy I felt like I was watching the Black Housemaid for a while, because the housemaid. I don't know if you got to see it, but I love her books. That was a movie where I was excited the whole time. And as cheesy as Freedom McFadden books can be sometimes, I was really excited throughout the whole movie. I think everybody was. And I felt the same watching this. And I want to know what part of it made you the most excited while shooting it. What scene were you like, damn, I killed that shit?

[Laila]

The scene I was most excited to get into was the scene with Lynn, you know, us fighting. I was most excited for that because she's legendary and, you know, thin line between love and hate. Like, she is just top notch. Like, I have always admired her. So to be able to play alongside her. And Ms. Lynn gets down. She is so active. She was. We both were doing it together for real, on our own.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

I was gonna ask. There was no stunt stunts.

[Laila]

Like, we had stunt people for, like, the extra stuff, but, like, I had bruises from heels on my legs.

[Host 2 (Weezy)]

Whoa.

We were both, like, slamming each other down. Yes. There was a moment I had to do like a football kind of toss into her.

Hold on. So you was excited? What was that?

I was nervous because when your adrenaline's pumping, you don't know how far you're gonna go. So I was like, Ms. Lynn, please let me know if I'm gonna. You know. And she was like, no, girl, you good? I'm good.

No. She is so fit and healthy and active, and that was just so exciting for me. When the scene finished, I was like, wow. I got to do a scene like this alongside the legendary Lynn Whitfield. So I think that was what I was most excited for.

Outside of Lynn. I forget how long she acted, because now I'm such a fan of her singing. How was it acting alongside Coco Jones?

[Laila]

Oh, that's my girl. I've known Coco since I was 12, since I played Wire Girls and Let it shine. Yes, since 12. Yes, ma'. Am.

So what was it like now, acting with her as, you know, just an adult and your homegirl?

[Host 2 (Weezy)]

Have y' all done something together before?

It was really. Yes. Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine. But, you know, we've stayed friends throughout then, and I'm so proud of everything that she's doing. So when I found out she got casted as the best friend role, I was like, oh, there's nobody else more perfect. And, you know, she came to Cape Town for a week, and we. We knocked it all out together, and it just felt so natural, like we weren't even acting. And in between shots, we were kikiing.

[Laila]

No. Which is good, because you become what you surround yourself with. You know what I mean? I have the circle of people I have around me kind of help me tame myself, calm it down.

We do need a devil on our shoulder sometimes. I need a, like, you know, when you have a friend that coddles you and one that gives you the real. I do think we need a little devil on our shoulder.

So it's like, so my godmom, who I'm really close to, I tell her everything anytime I'm about to crash out. It's a mild version of crash out. I pause, say I'm on FaceTime or a phone call. I pause. I'm like, hold on, can I get a snack? Even though I'm like, I'm simmering inside. Cause I don't want to regret anything I'm going to say. I mute it. I go over her. I either call her on my iPad or whatever I'm not on. And I'm like, can you let me know if I'm tripping here? And she'll be like, one. She'll be like, okay, you mad tripping? Or she'll be like, no, you have every right.

So once I get the. You have every right.

I'm like, bet. So I have that. But sis, she is. She'll be the one to kind of like. She'll be more of like Coco's character in the movie.

I love that because it's nice to see, like, sisterhood, womanhood, friendship in movies. And one of the big themes that I feel like we kept talking about was, like, being a girl's girl. Because I don't know, like, while being in the movie, it's hard when you're into somebody you didn't know the woman. You know what I mean? Like, what do you think could have been done in real life differently? Let's just say that this happened. And for those listening, we've already seen the movie, right? But knowing that he did it with someone else, it's almost like it doesn't make you feel special. And I'm gonna paint a random scenario for you. Okay? You're on a trip with your man. You're having such a great time. You're at this resort, and he takes you to a restaurant and is like, I know you would love this place. And you're like, oh, my God, I do come to find out. You just doing a little doom scrolling. And you see the ex girlfriend of him went to this restaurant a few years ago.

Oh, yeah, don't take me. Don't take me there again.

I found this incredible pasta spot in New York last week.

And I was. I don't remember the name. And the food was so good and the bread was so good. But I did have the pasta and garlic bread with no butter. Met her at a bar the other day. I said, wow, I didn't know they made. They got down with the spaghetti like this. Then I really had an addiction to cinnaholic, which is vegan cinnamon rolls. They have one New York, Louisiana, Atlanta, Toronto. I think I ate it a little too much. But it's vegan. They don't advertise as vegan. And it's like a cinnamon roll Chipotle.

like from December, like November, December, January. I did not go in the gym at all. And I saw my butt and thighs getting thicker. I was like, okay, cute. But then I saw my arms getting thicker too. I said, uh, oh, let me get up in the gym. I have a lot of things to prepare for. I don't want to be caught slipping on the carpet.

What's your workout routine when you're getting ready for a role? Like, what does your life turn into? Like, when you're getting ready to do something, are you just like business as usual or are you like non plus?

[Laila]

When you're learning, you stay ready so you don't have to get ready. Because by the time it's coming up, say it's like you get notified of a shoot maybe a week before, two weeks before, you're not gonna be able to look your best. Like trying to cramp it all in those two weeks. Now I have done it, you know, with the little three day juice cleanse. A quick, but it'll come right back. So I'm learning consistency is key. It's the best feeling when for so long you're like, okay, I'm getting up at 5am I'm not seeing any results. But when you look and you see results, I just had that moment the other day with my arms and back muscles because that's my most difficult area. I said, hold up, wait a minute, I see iron arms. I was very happy.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

What was the difference between preparing for this role and preparing for like a performance?

[Laila]

It was quite similar.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

Okay.

[Laila]

To be honest, it was quite similar because of the musical component. You know, I still had to learn all of my sheet music so that I could learn the orchestration pieces that Laila plays. What else? And I just had to be comfortable being raw and open and storytelling. And that's what I do on stage. I storytell. That's my goal actually. So when I'm doing it right, I'm properly storytelling. So the preparation for it kind of was the same.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

For anyone interested in watching Strung, what would you kind of tell them as a pretense going into it? If you could explain the movie in like two sentences.

[Laila]

Ooh.

[Host 1 (Mandy B)]

Cause you explained it as toxic mess earlier. And I agree. Yes, yes.

[Laila]

It's the most sophisticated, toxic, hot cup of tea you could drink.

[Host 2 (Weezy)]

It was.

And it will be an unforgettable experience.

It was. I will say that strung. Definitely captured. It made me have a lot of emotions. Like, I was upset with every character at some point and was like, literally yelling.

So it's really beautiful to have a strong story and, of course, some little toxic sprinkled in there. And that's. That's when we know we got the viewer.
