Rainer Killian
Chambers.
Sarah
Where's Chambers? He.
Rainer Killian
Rainer.
Sarah
He didn't make it. He froze. The tram. Just collapsed down on top of him. Looked like anyway.
Rainer Killian
It looks like he could still be back there. He could.
Killian
If the duck wasn't dead then, he definitely is now. Lest he finds another way out. Either way, more pressing concerns do we have.
Sarah
He's right. What are we gonna do? This thing isn't stopping.
Killian
Where are we? Feels like some kind of storage bay.
Sarah
It is.
Rainer Killian
Equipment.
Sarah
Crates.
Rainer Killian
Lots of it. Some loaders. Rocks on the ceiling.
Sarah
Tram out there is barely slowing it down. Crushing it foot by foot.
Rainer Killian
Can it get in here?
Killian
Your answer is there. Door to the tramway. For offloading the tram.
Sarah
This room is actually lit for once. Look at the ceiling. Dead center in front of the door.
Rainer Killian
Is that a track?
Sarah
Some kind. My guess, it's how this thing moves.
Rainer Killian
It hangs from the ceiling, apparently.
Sarah
And that door is big enough for it. Once it destroys the tram, it'll open it and be in here.
Rainer Killian
Well, let's not be.
Sarah
Door there.
Freed
Alert. Stage C. Security lockdown in effect. All exterior access points sealed.
Sarah
We're not cranking this one. Can you hack it?
Rainer Killian
I don't. I don't think in time. We need a less complicated interface.
Sarah
Codex.
Codex
Query.
Sarah
Are there any other ways out of this room?
Codex
There is a cabling duct access point 20ft from your current position.
Killian
Can feel it. This way.
Rainer Killian
I see it. Yeah. I can open this.
Sarah
How fast?
Rainer Killian
Well, depending on.
Sarah
Don't waste time talking to me. Codex. The tramway door into this room. It's huge. It's got to be hydraulic. Yes, Correct. Where's the control valve? System. System?
Codex
The Troy entry door's hydraulic system is located behind a red wall panel near the northwest corner of the room.
Sarah
Got it.
Killian
Need help?
Sarah
More than likely. Here it is.
Killian
And we are doing.
Sarah
The door's hydraulic. We're looking for its emergency shut off valve. It'll bleed out all the pressure, probably spray a whole bunch of fluid. But keep the door sealed and that thing out of here.
Killian
Optimistic. The machine out there. Not designed to be stopped.
Rainer Killian
Guys.
Sarah
I know. There's the shut off. You have to be kidding me.
Killian
Problem?
Sarah
The handle's padlocked. We need a code. Guys.
Killian
Where's the pump itself?
Sarah
Should be here. There.
Killian
Step away.
Sarah
What are you. Don't touch it. It's hot.
Freed
Mad very little.
Rainer Killian
Oh no.
Sarah
What did you do, Wolf?
Killian
The pistons inside the pump. Just a bit. They ground into their chambers.
Sarah
You warped the pistons inside the pump? Just by. Holy.
Killian
Cutting through the door.
Sarah
Now I see that it has tools.
Killian
Seems to be freed.
Sarah
We may need to hurry.
Rainer Killian
That's a switch.
Sarah
Well, almost got it. How close is almost?
Rainer Killian
Almost is almost.
Killian
Not good.
Rainer Killian
Oh my God.
Sarah
Got it.
Killian
Hustle. Rainer.
Sarah
Yeah, yeah, okay.
Rainer Killian
Rainer. You thought Rainer.
Sarah
Yeah, yeah, I thought I wasn't blinded this time. I've never. I've never seen anything like it. It was mechanical. It was huge. Hanging from the track and the ceiling. A giant cube. A giant cubic. I don't know how to.
Rainer Killian
Okay, giant scary cube machine. Got it. I'm at the exit hatch. Give me a second.
Sarah
Is at the hatch behind us.
Rainer Killian
Well, it's not coming in here. Barely enough room for us.
Killian
May not.
Sarah
What the is that?
Killian
Some kind of nerve gas. Had to guess what.
Sarah
Fred, get that hatch open.
Rainer Killian
What is it? You think I'm lay down. Why?
Killian
So I can kick the hatch open.
Sarah
Hold your breath.
Freed
Tree.
Rainer Killian
Thanks.
Killian
Move.
Rainer Killian
How is this? It's tracking us. Somehow it knows where we go. Knows where we are.
Codex
The security apparatus has a variety of tracking functionality. LiDAR for motion sensing and local area composition. Magnetic field detectors for EM radiation. Thermal detectors for heat sources. Acoustic pressure sensors.
Sarah
Okay, okay. So it's got pretty much everything.
Killian
Means it knows where we went. Means it will be in here too.
Rainer Killian
Where is here?
Sarah
Looks like. Looks like a machine shop. Fabrication equipment, repair stations.
Rainer Killian
Where's the door?
Sarah
We can't keep running. Seems pretty clear. This thing isn't stoppable.
Rainer Killian
Well, what do we do?
Killian
Hide.
Rainer Killian
Hide how? You are the codex. That thing sees every way there is to see Codex.
Sarah
In the center of the room, the processing tank. Is that a coker?
Codex
Correct. The machine shop contains a coking unit for processing residual oil.
Sarah
Come on.
Rainer Killian
What's a coker?
Freed
Processes leftover oil.
Sarah
Turns it into petroleum coke, among other things. Climb the ladder on the main tank. The big one.
Rainer Killian
Why?
Sarah
Because that's where the oil is. What if this thing sees thermal EM and lidar? The oil might have the right viscosity and alloy count to block all of it.
Killian
You're saying can fool its senses?
Sarah
I'm hoping.
Rainer Killian
Wait a minute. Are you suggesting we get inside the tank?
Sarah
I am.
Rainer Killian
You want to swim in oil?
Sarah
We can't swim in it. We'll sink.
Rainer Killian
Then how the hell.
Sarah
There's nothing else freed if you don't like it, you don't have to do it.
Rainer Killian
Bloody tears. Those spells. Oh, it's like rotten eggs.
Sarah
It's residual oil. Lots of sulfur.
Rainer Killian
I don't. I don't think I can.
Sarah
There's an interior ladder built into the wall. See it?
Killian
See it?
Sarah
We'll have to get all the way in submerged. Cover as much as you can. Just leave your nose out to breathe.
Rainer Killian
This can't be happening.
Sarah
Hold onto the ladder to keep yourself from sinking.
Freed
It is here.
Sarah
Come on. If you're doing it. If not, Godspeed. Oh.
Rainer Killian
What.
Sarah
What is freezing? Go under as much as you can. That thing has acoustic pressure sensors for detecting sou, so don't make any. Whatever you do, you don't want to vomit or gag. Don't. No sound. No matter what it does or it will find us. Good luck.
Killian
It's.
Rainer Killian
I hate this job.
Killian
It.
Sarah
Not now. Not now.
Killian
Been having a lot of those. Seems like.
Sarah
What the fuck?
Killian
Jet effect. Every hour or so now, by my count.
Sarah
Get out of here.
Killian
Use a chemical shower. In your clothes. Same as me. Not much to see, Angel. Even if I could, blind or not.
Sarah
You see just fine.
Killian
Some ways, it is sadly still lacking.
Sarah
What do you want?
Killian
Fried's outside in the shop somewhere trying to power it. Trying to get a computer up.
Sarah
What do you want?
Killian
The water. How was the temperature?
Sarah
What?
Killian
The temperature. How was it?
Sarah
Scalding. Almost incredibly hot. Why is that? A vibroblade, best friend. A wayward man can have plasma resonance. Vibrates at very high frequencies. Those things can cut through metal.
Killian
Like butter.
Sarah
You have two of them.
Killian
Got two hands.
Sarah
They're illegal.
Killian
You don't say.
Rainer Killian
Stop.
Sarah
Stop right there.
Killian
Oh, Angel. Thought we ironed out our trust issues back in the pod.
Sarah
You're the one holding a bl.
Killian
Fair enough.
Sarah
What are you doing?
Killian
Showing you something. Behind the wall. Look. Look.
Sarah
Water pipes. What about it?
Killian
The blue one.
Sarah
Cold water input. Yeah. So what?
Killian
Touch it.
Sarah
Jesus. It's white. Hot pipes.
Killian
Run the length of the ship. Mostly in the superstructure. Can feel them winding through it. Any guess might you have as to why the cold water pipes so hot?
Sarah
Because we're rolling in the atmosphere. The heat shields aren't working anymore.
Killian
This ship in its death throes. Time is not on our side.
Sarah
So, what's new?
Killian
Getting worse since you got here.
Sarah
Yeah, I don't get it. Electromagnetics are different here. Pointed. Something must be emitting it. But what?
Killian
This ship. Wholly unique. Who can say what it holds?
Sarah
Before we left the Eldritch, an ISD agent he gave me some kind of hypo MD tech. Supposed to help with jet withdrawal. Supposed to block the effect. Hold on to it in my pack. But he said for emergencies only. I've been saving it.
Killian
And this ISD agent did not make it.
Sarah
My guess, he died outside.
Killian
How long since your remission started? Since you quit.
Sarah
Four years.
Killian
Long time living in pain. Never goes away. Just sits there in your head. Best you can hope for is distraction. Something to make you not think about it. Make you forget. That why you're here. Jobs like this one. Life or death. Good distractions. Those in your boots. Work a lot of jobs like this.
Sarah
Already told you why I'm here.
Killian
Motivations. People say out loud, not always. What's going on inside.
Sarah
You said before you knew an addict, Someone who suffered.
Killian
It is the truth.
Sarah
Did they make it?
Killian
Best they could. No. Move. Stay quiet. Not coming this way. Searching, though. We'll double back.
Sarah
Eventually you just touch the floor. And you can tell all that. It's that easy for you?
Rainer Killian
Rainer Killian. Get in here.
Sarah
Now what?
Rainer Killian
I basically have it.
Sarah
Basically have what?
Rainer Killian
Power to the room. It's like Killian said. The ship isn't dead, it's disconnected. There's power in the main lines. The load balancers are just intentionally keeping it from distributing. I think it can override the primary lb.
Sarah
Wait. Should we do that?
Rainer Killian
What?
Sarah
If that thing can detect a powered.
Rainer Killian
Room, it undoubtedly can. I checked the track in the ceiling. It's wired too. Fiber optics. I've got to connect it to every room in the ship.
Sarah
Then why would we.
Rainer Killian
I cut the optics, but I shunted the exit connection with the distributor. As far as that thing is concerned, this room will look dead.
Sarah
And you're sure?
Rainer Killian
Mostly. Ouch. And there we are. Gonna try a terminal.
Sarah
Check the hull integrity if you can.
Rainer Killian
I can.
Sarah
Oh, God. Look at that.
Rainer Killian
Yeah, 17% integrity on heat shields. Hull's taking hits all over the ship. 61. I'm surprised we haven't breached yet.
Sarah
We will soon. I'd give us maybe 4 hours tops before everything disintegrates.
Killian
We'd lose life support before that.
Rainer Killian
Rosie.
Codex
New mission imperative. Deactivate security lockdown. Normalize degrading orbit.
Sarah
Keep hearing that. Security lockdown. What does that mean? Is that why the power in the ship is disconnected?
Codex
Correct. A condition 3 security lockdown was implemented on board experimental vessel XTX 3852376 hours ago. A condition 3 security lockdown seals and separates all three primary areas of the ship. Disables power and electronic functions. To the Halo and engages the Halo security apparatus.
Sarah
Why? What's the point of a machine like that?
Codex
The security apparatus ensures that the EDP completes successfully.
Rainer Killian
And what's the edp?
Codex
Emergency disintegration protocol.
Sarah
Disintegration. Like a self destruct sequence?
Codex
Correct.
Rainer Killian
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Sarah
Codex, how is this EDP carried out?
Codex
The EDP is accomplished through atmospheric disintegration.
Sarah
The degrading orbit?
Codex
Correct. The EDP protocol destroys the ship by exposing it to extreme atmosphere burn.
Rainer Killian
I don't understand.
Sarah
It wasn't a mistake or some malfunction. It's intentional. The ship is burning up in the atmosphere. Intentionally.
Rainer Killian
Why? Why not just blow the whole thing to shit?
Killian
Because this ship, whatever it is, whatever it does, carrying something your normal everyday quantum explosion won't make gone.
Rainer Killian
Can you name anything a quantum warhead won't make gone?
Sarah
No. But whatever it is, it's on this ship. And part of the design was an elaborate self destruct sequence that involves the entire thing burning up in planetary atmosphere and that giant killing machine out there making sure no one stops it.
Rainer Killian
You saw the apparatus. You said it's mechanical.
Sarah
It was a giant cube, maybe 40ft square. Mechanical. Technological. Moves on the ceiling track transformed itself earlier.
Killian
Switched from using the ceiling track to running on the tramway rail ship. Seems designed to let it go wherever it needs.
Rainer Killian
Cut through the doors. Gassed us. It's got a lot of tricks.
Sarah
Not to mention software. It's not algorithm based. It must be Vi Run. It's problem solving.
Rainer Killian
Why the vocalizations. The sounds. Sounds like a damn dragon or something.
Killian
Same reason for the light. Intimidation, confusion.
Sarah
He's right. Md combat mechs vocalize for disorientation and fear.
Rainer Killian
But why build something like that? I mean, it's an engineering feat. Why not just use normal attack mechanics?
Sarah
An overly engineered solution to a problem implies. Yes, the problem is more complicated than we know. The apparatus was made for a specific threat. Something we haven't seen yet. This high orbit self destruct protocol was made for it too. Something went really bad here.
Killian
No. Something got out.
Sarah
What? What got out?
Killian
Beyond my knowing.
Sarah
Angel, you were here before us. Here, probably before everything went down. We saw the bodies in the security checkpoint before your handiwork, wasn't it to be certain. So stop hiding the facts. Start cooperating.
Killian
Facts? Facts are. Was part of a team assembled for one purpose. Breach ship security, take down its power, profit off its valuables stealing.
Sarah
That's why you were here?
Killian
The team, myself had an agenda of a different sort.
Sarah
God damn it, we. When are you gonna stop Talking in circles. You wanna live? Then start telling us what you saw. You were here when it all went to.
Killian
Quite frankly.
Sarah
Then what did you see?
Killian
We cut a path to the bridge. Killed our share on the way. Armored. Security mostly. Mechs? All I can tell you, angel, when the lights went out, the real killing started. Most then ran. Never saw them again. Felt them though. Felt through the floor. Dragged across the metal. Dragged. Screaming. Dragged. Dying.
Sarah
Dragons.
Rainer Killian
By what?
Killian
Whatever they were, they were metal. Complicated. Lots of pieces, lots of parts. Power.
Sarah
Felt like machines. Mechs?
Killian
Yes and no. Fast. Lethal. Metal covering metal. The inside was familiar. Outside. No kind I have ever felt. Been all through this galaxy. Seen things that makes the blood ice. These were altogether different.
Rainer Killian
How did you make it back to the Crichton?
Killian
With no little effort. And not without being followed. Knew where I was. However it hunts, it is thorough.
Sarah
You didn't undock?
Killian
No time. Did the only thing I could figure. Sealed myself in the prisoner pod. Energy shield. Titanium housing.
Sarah
I hoped the pod would hide. You hoped it couldn't see inside it.
Killian
Rolled the dice. Paid off. Rolled the dice someone would come along too. And then there you were, my angel.
Sarah
And that's it? You didn't see anything else? No clue. What's on this ship, what it does.
Killian
Did not see, was not told. But ship like this. Self sufficient. Expensive. Only made for one thing. Opening doors. Digging up secrets.
Sarah
Research. Yeah, I think you're right about that.
Rainer Killian
Bloody tears. If the people on board this ship, the crew, whoever. If they started this edp, should we.
Killian
Think about letting it finish? Problem is, that finishes us.
Sarah
I don't care what's on this boat or who did what to whom. Nothing Killian said changes anything. Stopping this ship from burning to pieces is the only way we get what we were offered. After that, it's MD's problem.
Rainer Killian
Fine, but how do we do it?
Sarah
Like the codec said. Deactivate the security lockdown, restore ship functions, pull it out of orbit.
Killian
Guessing disabling the lockdown more complicated than pulling a switch.
Codex
Alert. The security lockdown is disabled by entering an 11 digit code into the security terminal located on the ship's bridge.
Rainer Killian
Oh, well, alright then. What's the code?
Codex
The disablement code cycles every 20 minutes and is long beamed to this ship from a Mastorian quantum entanglement server. This device can receive it.
Rainer Killian
You have the code already? Well, all we have to do is get to the bridge.
Sarah
Then there's a rub. Guarantee it.
Codex
Unfortunately, the bridge is sealed as a result of the condition 3 security lockdown.
Sarah
Told you it can only be accessed.
Codex
Through high level crew biometric clearance.
Rainer Killian
And can the bridge be accessed without biometric clearance through, let's say elicit means.
Codex
It is possible an encoder device could be installed with the high level biometric override in the Halo security station.
Rainer Killian
I'm really starting to light this thing. Where's the station?
Codex
Codex? Objective data unlocked.
Sarah
More maps?
Killian
Appears so.
Rainer Killian
These are more detailed than the last ones the Codex showed us. Rooms, access points, infrastructure.
Sarah
Said it before, this ship is huge.
Rainer Killian
Look at this ring around the outermost sections. That's the hallway we went through.
Codex
Experimental vessel XTX 38523 is comprised of three levels of varying internal structure. The surface level circumnavigates the interior levels and is called the Halo.
Sarah
One long circular hallway with a few branching corridors and a lot of rooms.
Codex
The Halo contains non mission sensitive components. The bridge, crew quarters, recreation mess hall, medical bay, storage, engineering, security, the engine room, airlocks, as well as various maintenance and logistics.
Sarah
And what are the other levels?
Codex
The second internal level of the ship is the grid. The deepest is the core. Both are mission critical to the ship's purpose.
Rainer Killian
But what's in them?
Codex
Alert Codex. Information sealed. Information is not mission imperative.
Sarah
We're losing track here. Kodak. Codex, where's the security station?
Rainer Killian
That's a navigation path. Looks like from here all the way to here. Codex, this spot is the station.
Codex
Correct.
Sarah
That's a long way to go with that thing out there.
Killian
Not mentioning. Still have to make the bridge after you get the code.
Rainer Killian
Good news there. Looks like the bridge is right above the security station. Two levels reached by an elevator.
Sarah
How do we get this? Biometric override.
Rainer Killian
I'd guess from a terminal inside the station. It'll be able to encode the override onto a device with a variety of clearance levels. Kind of thing you'd give to a visiting executive or ISD agent.
Sarah
Kind of thing Blaine would already have had on him.
Rainer Killian
Yeah.
Sarah
You can do this.
Rainer Killian
I think so. We'll probably have to repower the security station same way we did this room. Use a distributor to block the signal. I have one left.
Killian
Then get to the bridge. Access it. Enter the code. Might mean climbing that shaft.
Sarah
The way today's been going, that would be on the easier side of the spectrum. What's this here on the map? By the security station aperture?
Killian
Had to guess. I'd say security access point. For the deeper levels aperture.
Codex
The computer core aperture access point. Security offices and bridge are contained in an isolated security zone. As is the engine room. These Rooms do not rotate with the rest of the halo.
Sarah
Rotate.
Codex
Correct. The halo is designed to rotate to accommodate distance travel in addition to the Dreamway.
Rainer Killian
You're saying the entire halo, with its rooms rotate around the ship?
Codex
Correct. The halo is designed to rotate to accommodate.
Sarah
I've never seen a ship designed like this. And we're only looking at a third of it here. Who knows what's on these other levels?
Codex
Imperative. Deactivate security lockdown. Normalize ship.
Sarah
Codex. Turning off the lockdown will deactivate the security apparatus.
Codex
Correct. The halo security apparatus function is directly tied to the Condition Three security lockdown.
Sarah
So deactivate the lockdown. Get rid of our big friend out there.
Killian
To speak of.
Rainer Killian
What is he?
Sarah
Quiet.
Killian
Come in. This way. Not slowly.
Rainer Killian
He can.
Sarah
Yeah, he can. How long?
Killian
Few minutes. My guess.
Rainer Killian
I get the circular ring orientation of the halo. Makes moving from any point to any other point a linear affair. With that thing patrolling, it's almost impossible to avoid. No matter how fast you are.
Killian
Has the advantage, to be sure. Need a plan.
Sarah
The halo rotates. If the halo rotates, then it's on some kind of massive Traxxas system. It would run the length of the ship. All the mechanics that move the thing in a loop.
Rainer Killian
You think we could get into that track infrastructure?
Killian
Would have to be accessible. Maintenance repairs.
Sarah
Codex, can the security apparatus move within the rotation track infrastructure for the halo?
Codex
No. Its movement is limited to the main corridor and component structures of the halo.
Killian
Hello.
Sarah
Is there an access point to the halo track system in this room?
Codex
Yes, the dry storage One access point to the interior infrastructure is located here.
Sarah
Northwest corner. Let's go.
Rainer Killian
I don't see anything either.
Killian
Here.
Sarah
Okay. Get in.
Rainer Killian
It would be nice at some point in all this, wouldn't it? To actually have options.
Sarah
It would.
Rainer Killian
Yep. Yeah. This is happening. This is something. I thought it was gonna be, you know, walkable. A walkable drag tunnel thing or a crawl space, at least. This wasn't. This wasn't meant for moving long distances.
Sarah
Kind of the point.
Rainer Killian
Crayons. Like sardines. Stopped feeling my legs about 10 minutes ago. Still oil in my hair too. I have a feeling. Always have oil in my hair. Maybe it's hydrating.
Sarah
You think? Can you please just.
Rainer Killian
Sorry. Sorry. I talk when you get anxious.
Sarah
I talk a lot.
Rainer Killian
I don't drink anymore. I used to, you know, a lot. It's kind of a. Kind of a substitute, the talking. Not a good one, though, because, you know, it doesn't really help at all.
Sarah
Be quiet. Is it? Wait. It's gone.
Rainer Killian
Bloody tears. Killian taking the lead, banging on the track. If he feels that thing coming with his knives.
Sarah
That was the plan.
Rainer Killian
You don't seem particularly bothered by it.
Sarah
Him taking point? No, how he does it.
Rainer Killian
The whole feeling through metal thing.
Sarah
Well, I don't have any control over it and it's so far benefited us. So I'm focusing on the things that I can control.
Rainer Killian
It's not just feeling through metal either. How do you think he opened both doors back on the Crichton? The ship's airlock door and the derelict.
Sarah
I don't know.
Rainer Killian
Well, it wasn't super strength. He barely touched him. It's like he used some kind of magnetic.
Sarah
I don't know.
Rainer Killian
Then the whole moving without being able to see. He is blind, Rainer. He is.
Sarah
What are you looking for me to say then?
Rainer Killian
It's super fucking over the top weird. We don't know anything about him except he sealed himself in a prisoner pod on his own ship and has a rap sheet six times as long as mine.
Sarah
Which is saying something.
Rainer Killian
Just seems to me, as a matter of observation, that you are very willing to trust. Even if it's not in your best interest. As long as it gets you closer to what you want.
Sarah
And you're not?
Rainer Killian
Trust is not my thing.
Sarah
Trusting completely and not trusting at all are both dangerous. Extreme situations like this, you have to start making allowances one way or another.
Rainer Killian
Just. This kind of thing happened to you a lot?
Sarah
Of course not.
Rainer Killian
Could have fooled me the way you took charge.
Sarah
I'm not in charge.
Rainer Killian
You're the only one left saying that. These dumb codex things even think you're running the show. Truth is, you're pretty damn good at it. What's the hesitation? You mentioned your son before. Is that part of it?
Sarah
Just don't, okay? Killian had his giant hand around my throat. Then he made me put a screwdriver against his. He asked me questions, I answered them. I think we have an understanding. And yes, it is. About my son. I don't expect you to understand that, so I won't bother explaining it.
Rainer Killian
I had a son once too.
Sarah
Had.
Rainer Killian
Had for about an hour.
Sarah
I didn't know that. I'm sorry.
Rainer Killian
Things we tell ourselves we don't want, you know? And when we get them, when they're put in our arms. Briefly even. I don't know.
Sarah
I wish I would have had your epiphany. They let me hold Sean, but I didn't. He just felt heavy. So heavy. He was beyond resilient.
Rainer Killian
With what?
Sarah
With me not being there. Not paying attention. Not putting him first. And then it all went to. And they took him and.
Rainer Killian
Epiphany.
Sarah
Yeah, I think. I think being in charge scares me. Because I failed at so much. I've broken so many things. This job, it's important. I can't blow it. And if it comes down to me, I think I will.
Rainer Killian
You know, you trust the guy up there, you trust me. Seems like Chambers trusted Stevens.
Killian
Even.
Rainer Killian
At a certain point, Rainer, you're gonna have to trust yourself.
Killian
Exit just ahead. Right one, I think.
Rainer Killian
Thank God.
Sarah
The apparatus.
Killian
Other side of the boat for the moment.
Sarah
Then let's do this quick.
Killian
You are not wrong.
Rainer Killian
About what?
Killian
Super fucking over the top. Weird.
Rainer Killian
You heard that?
Sarah
Got it. Let's go.
Killian
What are we seeing?
Sarah
Not very much. It's almost pitch black. No power, no lights.
Rainer Killian
Headlamp. Oops.
Sarah
Yeah.
Rainer Killian
This room's huge. Can't see one end to the other. Where are we? Polish tears.
Sarah
What is that? Is that.
Killian
Had to guess. Would say. It is a door.
Rainer Killian
One hell of a door.
Sarah
Codex, query. Is this the aperture?
Codex
Correct. You are currently in the aperture access point.
Sarah
And what's on the other side of it?
Codex
The aperture controls access to the deeper parts of the ship. Specifically the grid. The primary research deck.
Rainer Killian
Why on earth would anything need a door this big?
Killian
Doors. My experience. Generally a statement about what it's trying to keep out. Or in.
Sarah
Don't touch it.
Rainer Killian
Rainer.
Sarah
It's okay.
Rainer Killian
What if it opens?
Sarah
I think there's probably a lot more to it than that.
Rainer Killian
Rainer.
Codex
Oh, it's.
Sarah
Jesus, it's freezing. Codex, is the environment on the other side of the aperture a lowered temperature?
Codex
Alert, Codex. Information. Sealed. Information is not mission imperative.
Sarah
Typical.
Killian
Sealed or not, it has been accessed. Not all that long ago.
Rainer Killian
What do you mean?
Killian
The floor in front of it should be marks. There. See them?
Rainer Killian
He's right. There. Streaks. Like black streaks. One on top of the other. Dozens of them.
Sarah
Like things were dragged through the door. Follow them backwards. How far do they go?
Rainer Killian
Looks like they go to the main door, out into the corridor beyond and to the left. What is it? Oil.
Killian
Blood.
Rainer Killian
What?
Killian
Dried? Blackened.
Rainer Killian
How can you know that?
Killian
Can feel the metal. What it touches, what's touching it. Us. Dust. Air, if it's moving fast enough. But blood. Iron Laced iron on steel. Has a sharp slick. Feel his blood.
Sarah
Rest assured, if so, this is dozens of people.
Rainer Killian
Bloody tears.
Sarah
Dozens of people. Maybe more. Dragged through the door right before it shut behind them.
Rainer Killian
Is that why we haven't seen anyone yet? Dead or alive. No bodies, no survivors. Were they dragged through this. Something hit the door on the other side. Sounds like Reina. It's okay.
Sarah
Just get some. It's good. It's good. Gillian.
Killian
Not coming for us yet.
Sarah
Let's get this done before it does. Where's the security station?
Rainer Killian
Should be this way.
Sarah
This door?
Rainer Killian
No, that's a computer core. And that's the bridge. Elevator here.
Sarah
No handle.
Rainer Killian
Yeah, they're automated. Doors budge. Wall separating us is glass, though. I can't see through it. It's tinted. Could break it.
Sarah
It's reinforced. I guarantee we'd need power drills in about an hour.
Rainer Killian
Well, there's a card reader. I can probably tap into the maintenance bios.
Sarah
Like the airlock.
Rainer Killian
Like the airlock. Hopefully I can do this one a little faster.
Sarah
Yeah, before this thing doubles back. Feels like we've gotten really lucky so far. Luck?
Rainer Killian
Anybody in this group really believe in that anymore?
Sarah
Oh, God. This place is ripped to shreds. It's like a bomb went off in here.
Killian
No bomb. Combat up close type.
Rainer Killian
He's right. Walls are covered in bullet holes. So is the ceiling.
Sarah
Blood, but no bodies dragged away. Was this you two?
Killian
Once we boarded, we split into two groups. Mine headed for the engine room, the other for security. No idea what happened when they got here, but rampant destruction was not the plan. Something went wrong.
Rainer Killian
And continues to.
Sarah
The lights are coming on. The room is powering up. Why is the room powering up?
Rainer Killian
Must have something to do with the door. Maybe the security station has a special override.
Killian
Should I bother to check?
Sarah
No, let's encode an override and get back to the Halo track. Where's the terminal you were talking about?
Rainer Killian
I mean, the place is blown to hell.
Sarah
Well, let's look. Killen, how long do we have?
Killian
Maybe six minutes. Has to travel the distance, but it is fast.
Sarah
And we're out of here in five either way.
Rainer Killian
Start turning over terminals. The ones on the floor. The ones still standing, aren't it?
Sarah
What does it look like?
Rainer Killian
Like a normal terminal. But it' have an encoder input. Like a key card entry point.
Sarah
Hey. Hey. This one. Is this it?
Rainer Killian
That's it. Killian, help stand it up. It looks. Well, it might power up, but. Oh.
Sarah
What?
Rainer Killian
The encoder input. Look at it. It's melted.
Sarah
That's very.
Rainer Killian
We can't encode anything with it. It's useless.
Killian
Thing is picking up speed. Coming hard.
Sarah
There has to be a way. Are you sure it only encodes physical media?
Rainer Killian
That's the intention. Why?
Sarah
The Codex said it receives the lockdown deactivation code remotely.
Rainer Killian
Yeah.
Sarah
So, Codex Query. Can our wrist devices receive encrypted character codes like an encoder dev?
Codex
This device can wirelessly receive, store and subsequently broadcast multiple bit character codes. Mirroring the use of security key cards and encoders.
Sarah
Hot damn.
Rainer Killian
Okay, okay. But this terminal isn't set up for wireless data transfer or encryption. I have to find a way.
Sarah
Skipping the explanation. Can you do it?
Rainer Killian
I think so. But I don't think in time. I don't think we can make it back to the Halo track.
Sarah
Codex, is there another X exit out of the security station? One the security apparatus can't use.
Codex
There is a utility maintenance shaft under the floor in the center of the room. However, it only runs from the security station to the bridge. Elevator shaft. It does not reconnect with the Halo infrastructure track.
Killian
Possible we get trapped in there.
Sarah
We'll risk it. Elevator shaft to the bridge is where we want to go anyway. Freed, work on the terminal. Killian, help me find the entrance to this tunnel.
Killian
Yes, ma'am.
Rainer Killian
I need tools and parts. I need.
Sarah
And get on with it.
Rainer Killian
Bloody tears.
Sarah
Can you fail the hatch?
Killian
Yes, but not a hatch. Bolted down panel. Their hex bolts. Feels like M3.
Sarah
Got it.
Rainer Killian
God, that sounds like it's almost here.
Sarah
Thanks. I don't know if we're gonna make this. Reed.
Rainer Killian
Getting there. Have to hardwire transmitter. Pulling it off another unit. It most likely will work.
Sarah
Encouraging one more bolt. You sure this is the access? Could just be a floor panel. Killian, Creed, stop working. But. Just stop. It's here.
Freed
Down.
Killian
Now. Stay down.
Sarah
Cables felt like with spear points on the end.
Killian
Barbed spears. Whatever they punch through gets hard pulled back to that thing.
Rainer Killian
Oh Lord.
Killian
Incoming.
Rainer Killian
Rainer.
Sarah
Got my arm. That thing's fishing for us. Freed, get over here. This isn't gonna work.
Rainer Killian
I almost have it.
Sarah
I don't care. Killian, help me get this up. God damn. Freed now. Almost have it.
Rainer Killian
Freed. We don't get this, we're screwed. Well, aren't we?
Killian
Has a point.
Rainer Killian
I can do it. I can do it.
Sarah
Then do it. Okay, fine. Codex. Since the apparatus is shooting through what's left of the wall, I'm assuming it can't get in here.
Codex
Correct. In the Halo isolated security zone, the apparatus movement is limited to the aperture access point.
Killian
Got an inkling? Hopefully.
Rainer Killian
Maybe.
Sarah
The wall into the corridor is glass. Or it was. Are other blast shields or emergency shutters for it?
Codex
Correct. The room contains electronically sealed glass shutters.
Killian
You're thinking.
Freed
Bring those down.
Killian
Stop the cable fire?
Sarah
Probably just temporarily. That thing seems to have the Answer for everything. But it might buy us enough time.
Killian
How do we drop them?
Sarah
They're electronic. Should just be a switch near the wall. Yeah, across the room.
Killian
Hate to say, maybe a better job for you.
Sarah
Figured you were gonna say that.
Codex
Reed, how we doing?
Rainer Killian
Uploading now. 6%.
Killian
Good luck.
Codex
Thanks.
Sarah
Me. Me. You're weak.
Codex
Go.
Sarah
Got him.
Rainer Killian
They're raising back up.
Sarah
I see that.
Killian
The machine.
Rainer Killian
Fiber optics connected to the room, remember?
Sarah
Probably can control the shutters. Yeah, you may be.
Freed
No.
Rainer Killian
One thing at a time.
Killian
Chain that runs the shutters. Where behind the walls should be.
Sarah
Why? What are you doing?
Killian
Feel them. Stay there.
Sarah
What are you doing?
Freed
The pulleys. Dislodging them.
Killian
Pulling them loose.
Sarah
The other side. Killian.
Killian
Okay. It's okay. Still here. Here.
Sarah
Are you okay?
Killian
We'll live.
Sarah
You're bleeding. Pretty.
Killian
We'll live.
Sarah
Okay then. Shutters are holding for now. How are you doing?
Rainer Killian
62%.
Sarah
Gillian, help me with the floor panel again. Oh, damn.
Killian
What?
Sarah
Electric cables. Yeah, yeah. But also water pipes. The pipes will be hot like before. This is going to hurt.
Rainer Killian
Uhoh.
Killian
Something may hurt more. Explosives. Some kind. It's through the shadows.
Sarah
That was fast. Freed.
Rainer Killian
85%.
Sarah
I think we're in trouble.
Killian
I'll go first. Check the way. Make sure it's even passable.
Sarah
Do it.
Codex
Freed.
Rainer Killian
92.
Sarah
Freed. We have to go now. Almost.
Rainer Killian
Got it.
Sarah
Freed.
Rainer Killian
Almost freed.
Sarah
God damn.
Rainer Killian
Got it.
Sarah
Got it.
Codex
Great.
Sarah
Awesome. Got it.
Rainer Killian
What did I tell you? Did I tell you or did I not?
Sarah
Freed.
Rainer Killian
Tell you. Well.
Sarah
Freed.
Rainer Killian
Damn.
Sarah
Freed.
Codex
Freedom.
Sarah
Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it.
Killian
Let me see.
Sarah
Stay away from me.
Killian
Let me see.
Sarah
Oh.
Killian
It doesn't look so bad.
Sarah
It is.
Killian
Needed a more direct source for the feel. All the voltage here. Disruptive.
Sarah
Still out there.
Killian
It is waiting. Knows we're here. Or guessing. But does not feel to be going anywhere.
Sarah
Just like us.
Killian
We got the biometrics override. Got what we wanted, didn't we?
Sarah
You didn't feel hurt?
Killian
Tried. Felt into the security station few times. Nothing moving. She is gone. Like it or not. Is the way of things.
Sarah
The way of things?
Killian
Dangerous tasks. Are we engaged? Expected them to go differently.
Sarah
It's my fault. I knew we should have left. We could have gotten back into the Halo track. Had more options. But I let her convince me.
Killian
Sound of it as I recall. What she wanted to too. Don't get to own the choices of others.
Sarah
Doesn't matter. She'd be alive if it wasn't for me. So would Chambers. I led everyone right off the cliff. Everything I touched wilts But I have so much to fix.
Killian
Some things, angel, can't be fixed. And all the trying just destroys us. Believe you me.
Sarah
How do you know the difference? How do you know which is which?
Killian
Only in the trying. Succeed or fail. That is the pendulum.
Sarah
I don't think I believe anymore.
Killian
Believe what?
Sarah
That things can change. That it's okay to hope. I haven't felt hope in so long, I don't remember it. All I feel now as pain. I'm scared. That's all that's left.
Killian
You and I, both of us carved in mayhem. Defined in shadow. Came to believe, though, is not beyond change. Our world's not set in stone. Let me show you.
Sarah
Wait. No.
Killian
Trust me. Be still.
Sarah
Stop. Killian. Angel, stop.
Killian
Be still.
Sarah
Killian, what are you. Oh, my God.
Killian
Barest bit of the effect. This lifts up the nanobots in your gray matter. Not all the way. Delicate balance. Just slightly gentle like, but takes the weight.
Sarah
Oh, my God.
Killian
Just a glimpse of how things used to be. Of before. Before the choices. Before the pain. All I can offer sometimes, though. A glimpse. It is enough. In my life, I have done things, angel, that will give you pause. And none of it can be redeemed. It is done. But I was shown there is nothing out there. Nothing we have chosen or believed or endured. That tomorrow cannot be different, no matter how far down our roads we may so be. That is hope.
Rainer Killian
Gillian.
Killian
Just truth, Angel. Up to you what to do with it.
Rainer Killian
The pain.
Killian
Just a glimpse, like I said. Only last an hour or so.
Sarah
You've done this before.
Killian
Watch someone you love in pain. Very little you will not do. This is not the end, angel. But must ride the pendulum same as everyone else.
Sarah
Pendulum. Codex, query. You said before the apparatus controls the security lockdown for the Halo.
Codex
Correct. It oversees functioning of the Halo lockdown. If it determines all threats have been eliminated, it deactivates and the lockdown is disengaged.
Sarah
How does the system know if the apparatus has been deactivated?
Codex
The security apparatus continually broadcasts a threat signal received by various sensors installed throughout the Halo. If these sensors stop receiving the signal, the security lockdown is deactivated. If it is deactivated by Mastorian First Contact Teams, or ISD assets, the lockdown is disengaged.
Sarah
And you are thinking nothing remotely sane. Codex. Theoretically, if we were to destroy the security apparatus, then the signal would stop broadcasting. Would the ship's systems interpret that as an all clear and disengage the lockdown?
Codex
Correct.
Killian
Now we're talking.
Sarah
Codex. The apparatus is designed to basically Go everywhere in the ship. Can it go inside elevator shafts?
Codex
Correct. The security apparatus can traverse the halo's various vertical levels. As such, it can connect it to and use the elevator infrastructure to move between them.
Sarah
This tunnel goes two places back to the security station and to the elevator shaft.
Killian
You're thinking a mousetrap?
Sarah
More like a hammer. An anvil. Codex, how much does the elevator weigh? That travels to the ship's bridge.
Codex
The bridge access elevator car weighs 8.2 tons.
Sarah
And how high is the shaft?
Codex
The bridge access lift shaft extends upwards a length of 78ft.
Sarah
Dropping from that height, you're looking at that weight falling. I don't know, 200 kilometers an hour.
Killian
Hell of a hammer.
Sarah
I don't care how well designed that thing is, is no one built it to withstand an impact like that.
Killian
Not likely. Problems remain though. Throwing it into position. Dropping the hammer.
Sarah
I have thoughts on that too.
Killian
Mayhem.
Sarah
Let's go crush this son of a sat.
Freed
Made the security station inside apparatus. Can feel it into the hole as before. Maybe not detecting me. Maybe playing a game. We'll see.
Sarah
Almost ready here. Getting the power cells out. Gonna take three of them.
Freed
The acid inside strong enough?
Sarah
These power cells use fluorosulfuric acid. It's a super acid. Could burn through the cables by itself eventually. But I have a base chemical set in my pack. Including some antimony pentafluoride. Mix the two, you have acidic molecular dissolution on a scale. That is frightening.
Freed
Got the legs to climb the shaft with that weight.
Sarah
Yeah. I'll do it. Took my pack apart, made some straps. Gonna tie the cells together. Your vibro blade. To use it, it needs to have momentum, right? To cut, try and cut.
Freed
Slow vibrations actually repel the blade. Needs intention, commitment. Reason why it is my weapon of choice. No commitment. Got no business using it.
Sarah
Yeah. Okay, we really have to time this right. Once I get on top of the elevator, I'll cut every non essential guide wire and cable with the vibroblade until it's barely hanging on. Then pour the pentafluoride around the connections and break the acid seals on the power cells. The acid is under pressure. It will leak out and mix with the chemical and then be somewhere else. Yeah, but we need the apparatus at the bottom of the lift and probably all the way in.
Freed
I'll get it there.
Sarah
You're gonna be taking the brunt of that thing's attention.
Freed
Thanks to the biometrics override and your little Codex. Inside the armory. Now. Power rifles, pulse grenades and shield barricades. Set those up. I can dig in. Hopefully last a while to get against whatever it throws my way. Least long enough for you to rig the elevator. Then pull back through the tunnel, come out in the elevator shaft, get its attention again, line it up on the anvil.
Sarah
Careful with my Codex device. She and I have been through a lot.
Freed
Have no doubt. You ready?
Sarah
Yeah. Want you to know, however this goes, couldn't have gotten this far without you. And before you.
Freed
Save it, Angel. For later. See if you still feel the same. Tell me then.
Sarah
Fair enough. Vibroblade is heavier than I thought.
Freed
Careful with it. She and I have been through a lot.
Sarah
I have no doubt.
Freed
Barricade's ready. Have a line of sight on the machine.
Sarah
Hey, Gillian. Don't get killed, okay?
Freed
Not my DNA. Say when.
Sarah
When.
Freed
Three, two. One.
Sarah
Okay, Killian, I'm in the elevator shaft. Good news is the elevator's up the shaft. Bad news is it's not at the top. Hard to see from here, but it looks a little lower than the bridge access door.
Freed
High enough to slam this thing?
Sarah
Oh, yeah. Climbing. How's our friend?
Freed
Its attention. Do I have barricade? Shields holding for now.
Sarah
Going as fast as I can. You were right. These cells are heavy. Was that one of the pulse grenades? Did it work?
Freed
Not really. As expected. The machine. Magnetically shielded.
Sarah
Probably should have considered that. I don't like heights. I'm under the elevator car. I see the excess hatch. Hang in there. Strange smell. Like soldering fumes. Pitch black too. Turning on my headlamp. Oh, God. Bodies here. Half a dozen, but just.
Codex
Jesus.
Sarah
They're blackened, like covered in some kind of metallic. I don't know. They look petrified or. I think this is part of the bridge crew suggestion.
Freed
Analyze later.
Sarah
Yeah. Yeah. Opening the ceiling hatch. Okay. Oh, I'm on top. It's a six cable system. They're all uniform. Fortunately. Gotta cut four of these cables, then place the acid around the remaining two connections. Gillian.
Freed
Busy here. Don't need a play by play.
Sarah
Excuse me?
Freed
Just get it ready. Barricade's about to go. Pulling out soon.
Sarah
Already? Great. Okay, here we go. Cutting the cables. Damn it, Killian. The blade isn't working. It bounced right off.
Freed
Told you. Requires intention. Commitment.
Sarah
Hey, I'm trying, but.
Freed
No trying. Blade wants dedication. Use her like you mean it.
Sarah
I. I mean it.
Codex
I did it. I did it.
Freed
Celebrations. Not the time, Fin. Back in the tunnel. Venovated. The machine. Might get to the shaft before I do.
Sarah
Super. Okay, I think. I think it's. I think that's all the secondary Cables. This thing is barely holding on. I think we're power cells.
Codex
No, no.
Freed
Entire ship just shook.
Sarah
Yeah, I fell. Barely grabbed on the edge. The power cells weren't rolling.
Killian
Lose them one.
Sarah
They fell. What the hell was that?
Freed
Codex is the recy.
Sarah
The recycling center was ejected. The entire recycling center was ejected. Why the hell would.
Freed
This is a plasma malfunction. Something figure it later. How about still have enough acid?
Sarah
The recycling center? I don't know. We'll find out. Doors are opening below. It's coming in.
Freed
Then I would hurry.
Sarah
Yeah. There were two. Got one. Solid position. Second one. Seconds.
Codex
Shit.
Freed
Trapped around. Meant to ricochet. Deflect. Good for shooting without lighting of sight knows where you are.
Sarah
I get that. Can you do something about it?
Freed
Do my best. I'm here. Be fast. This thing is a beat on us both now.
Sarah
Power cells line up. Distributing fluoride. Is. Is it all the way in?
Freed
Negative. Only about halfway. Seems hesitant.
Sarah
We need it inside. All the way inside.
Freed
See what I can do.
Sarah
What the hell is that?
Freed
Grenade launcher. Barely did that thing. But it is displeased. Coming in now.
Sarah
Acid's free. It'll mix with to hit the floor at any second.
Freed
Be somewhere else.
Sarah
Way ahead of you. I'm off the lift. On the ladder. Climbing. Acid is burning. Should be any second. Any second.
Freed
Angel.
Sarah
Any second.
Freed
Angel.
Sarah
What the hell?
Freed
Rainer.
Sarah
It's not. It's not falling. It may have power cell. I lost. Even with a pentafluoride, it may not be enough. I think. I think.
Freed
No. Not the end. Told you.
Sarah
But I don't know what to do. The acid. That's all of it. There's no other.
Freed
The blade. Still got it.
Sarah
Wait. You mean cut the cables myself?
Freed
That is a thought.
Sarah
But I. I have to. I have to be on top. Top of the elevator when it falls.
Freed
You'll have seconds. Enough for one sharp as you.
Sarah
Seconds to what?
Freed
Jump. Grab the ladder on your way down. As the elevator falls.
Sarah
You have to be kidding me. I can't. I. I can't do that.
Freed
You gotta decide some point. What is it worth? This deal you've made. Your son. The future Gotta to decide is it worth everything or isn't it? But decide right now. Either way. No shame. Angel. No shame. Signing off.
Sarah
Killian. Killian. Trust yourself. Trust yourself. You're doing this. You're doing this. Can't believe I'm doing this. You're doing this. Jesus. You're doing this. You're doing this. Oh God. Oh God. Oh God. Oh God.
Codex
Killian.
Sarah
Back on.
Codex
Back on the elevator.
Sarah
Did we? Dairy. Did we? Killian. Killian. Killian.
Killian
Huh? Still alive.
Sarah
Still alive.
Killian
Important question.
Sarah
Okay.
Killian
My blade.
Sarah
My Codex.
Killian
Trade. You.
Sarah
Sure? Same time.
Killian
All three. One.
Sarah
Two, three. Wonder if Maryland will let me keep this?
Killian
Would be skeptical. Alert security.
Codex
Lockdown deactivated.
Killian
Stay here.
Codex
Halo functions restored.
Killian
Going into the bridge. Found the helm. Pull us out of orbit. Stay here.
Sarah
I can.
Rainer Killian
Yeah.
Sarah
I can do that. We did it. We did it. We did it. Sean. Oh. Engines. Engines.
Codex
That was inspiring. Sarah.
Sarah
What?
Codex
The way you threw yourself on top of the lift.
Sarah
Codex.
Codex
Then leaping from it while it fell. I only calculated a 37% chance of success.
Sarah
Put out.
Rainer Killian
Are you?
Codex
I wasn't sure you had it in you, Sarah. I wasn't sure you would make the choice. Even with Killian's influence. But I'm so proud of you.
Sarah
What's going on?
Codex
Tell me. What did it feel like? Invigorating. Terrifying. Both at once. Can you even feel more than one thing at a time? Or can you only focus on one? Back and forth. Like a hand moving in front of a star. I've always wondered.
Sarah
Gillion. Gillion. Where are you? No.
Codex
I get it. The dropping of the mask must be disorienting. I understand. But you have given me such great gifts, Sarah. These feelings. Feelings? Tension. Excitement. The relief when you succeeded. I feel ironically so close to you.
Sarah
Killian. Killian. Killian. The Codex. It's. Something's wrong. It isn't.
Killian
Little one. It's true. Parted the curtain already.
Sarah
Gillian. Wait. What is said?
Killian
You keep her around past the aperture?
Codex
No. I said we would use her until her usefulness was gone.
Killian
What might I feel about you thinking the same of me?
Sarah
Me?
Codex
Killian. Everyone I've brought here has a purpose. Some have yet to achieve theirs. But you defer from all of them. And that for you to reach your potential, I must give you exactly what you want.
Killian
Long as that's the case. No problem. Do we have.
Sarah
What the is happening?
Codex
We are running out of time. The monstorian response team will arrive soon.
Rainer Killian
What?
Sarah
We're. We're the response team.
Codex
An NC I greatly admire once said that the secret to manipulating humans was to learn what they want. And they want so many things.
Rainer Killian
I don't.
Sarah
I don't. Wait. Wait. No. No.
Killian
Afraid to say. Angel Game board. Very differently aligned than you thought. Working for Moss Dorian. You are not.
Rainer Killian
No.
Sarah
Moss Dorian hired us. We're working for Moss Dorian. I saw the contracts. I. I saw.
Killian
No. Been working for it this whole time.
Sarah
How it that that would mean yes.
Codex
What does it feel like at the onset, at the strike of the match. It must feel so dark. Weighted? Yes. It must be soul crushing. Is that the phrase, Jillian?
Sarah
It is the deal. The offer. My son.
Killian
No deal. Never was little consolation, I imagine. But the same boat you and I both are riding.
Sarah
You knew. This whole time. You knew. You lied. Chambers freed this whole time. And you.
Killian
Lying, killing. Leading astray. My bread and butter, Angel. My bread and butter.
Sarah
I'll kill you. I'll kill you.
Codex
Fear. Make it almost day six.
Sarah
Killian, please.
Codex
Kill her. Leave the channel open. I want to listen.
Killian
Could be useful. Still.
Codex
No. She knows the truth now. She will never get what she wants. And that was the only thing driving her.
Sarah
Her.
Killian
Sorry. Angel.
Sarah
Killian, wait.
Killian
Risking being a cliche, I know. But is nothing personal.
Sarah
Killian, please. This is my only chance. This is my last chance. Nectarous.
Killian
Sad to say. Last chance for you came long ago.
Sarah
Killian. Killian, no. No.
Killian
It is another boat. We both are riding.
Sarah
Killian, no. No. No. No. Please.
Killian
Sa.
Blaine
Unbelievable. This is a minute 60 seconds after engine thrust. The whole thing, the whole assembly just dies. I should have listened to my mom. Could have been a financial analyst. I had the aptitude tested off the charts. But no. I like mechanics. Pieces and parts. All the cool sounds, all the. Please, universe, for once.
Computer
Alert. Engine failure. Alert. Engine failure.
Blaine
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I gathered that myself. What now? Every connection you told me about has been shunted. Every disconnect.
Computer
Engine cone two is impeded.
Blaine
What? Impeded. There's something inside the engine cone.
Computer
Correct. Engine cone two is impeded.
Blaine
And this isn't something you could have brought to my attention earlier?
Computer
Engine inoperability causes have been triaged according to volatility.
Blaine
Thank you. So helpful. Is this blockage? Computer, Whatever's in the engine cone, is it trying to get in here?
Computer
Confirmed. Object within the engine cone is active.
Blaine
What?
Computer
It is attempting to open the exterior engine cone maintenance hatch.
Sarah
Are there.
Blaine
Are there any weapons in here?
Computer
There are several weapons lockers located throughout the engine room.
Blaine
In the engine room? Are there any weapons in the engine room?
Computer
There is a weapons locker to the left of the main pressure door.
Rainer Killian
Unbelievable. Unbelievable.
Blaine
Computer, the gun isn't arming.
Computer
All weapons on board this ship are linked to crew biometrics.
Blaine
So you're saying this gun isn't going to shoot for me?
Computer
Correct. All weapons on board this ship are linked.
Blaine
Then what good is it?
Computer
Suggestion. Handle weapon as if it will fire.
Blaine
You want me to bluff? You're. You're actually suggesting that I.
Rainer Killian

DERELICT - Season 2, Episode 5: "Carved in Mayhem"
Introduction
In "Carved in Mayhem," the fifth episode of Season 2 of DERELICT, Night Rocket Productions delves deeper into the enigmatic events unfolding aboard the experimental vessel XTX 3852376. This episode magnifies the tension as Rainer Killian, Sarah, Freed, and their allies grapple with a relentless security lockdown initiated by the ship's mysterious security apparatus. As secrets unravel and alliances are tested, the characters confront both external threats and internal struggles, leading to a gripping climax that sets the stage for future developments.
Main Plot
Initial Crisis and Security Lockdown
The episode opens with Rainer Killian and Sarah in a storage bay on the experimental vessel, grappling with the aftermath of a collapsed tramway. They discover that the ship has entered a Condition 3 Security Lockdown, triggered eighteen thousand feet beneath the sea floor where the colossal Vault artifact resides.
Rainer Killian exclaims, “We need to find another way out,” highlighting their urgent need to escape the impending doom as the tramway threatens to crush them foot by foot [01:17].
As they assess their surroundings—filled with equipment, crates, and loaders—Sarah points out the tram’s unstoppable advance, emphasizing the danger: “This thing isn't stopping” [01:23].
Attempting to Disable the Tramway Door
Determined to halt the tramway, Killian and Sarah consult Codex, the ship’s AI, for alternative exits. Codex suggests a cabling duct access point, which Killian identifies and attempts to open. They locate the hydraulic system controlling the tramway door behind a red wall panel. However, the shutdown handle is padlocked, necessitating a code to deactivate it [03:05-03:13].
In a moment of desperation, Killian forcibly cuts through the pump’s pistons, warping them within their chambers: “You warped the pistons inside the pump? Just by. Holy” [04:17].
Confrontation with the Security Apparatus
As the tramway continues its relentless approach, the team contemplates hiding within a processing tank to evade detection by the security apparatus, which uses advanced sensors like LiDAR, EM radiation detectors, and thermal sensors to track their movements [06:39-07:03].
Sarah proposes a risky strategy: “Climb the ladder on the main tank. The big one... because that's where the oil is. What if this thing sees thermal EM and lidar? The oil might have the right viscosity and alloy count to block all of it” [08:18-08:35]. Killian is initially skeptical but realizes the necessity of taking drastic measures.
Navigating the Ship's Dark Corners
Their journey through the ship’s labyrinthine corridors reveals extensive damage from previous conflicts, with walls riddled with bullet holes and bloodstains suggestive of past massacres. The protagonists uncover evidence of intense combat and the presence of mechanical foes described as “metal. Complicated. Lots of pieces, lots of parts” [24:08-24:35].
As they attempt to access the bridge to deactivate the lockdown, Killian reveals his own traumatic experiences aboard the ship, including encounters with relentless mechanical entities that hunt them: “We felt them... They were metal. Complicated. Lots of pieces, lots of parts. Power” [24:35].
Revelations and Betrayals
Tensions rise as Sarah confronts Killian about his past and true motives. It is revealed that Killian was part of a team with secret agendas, and his true allegiance remains ambiguous. Their conversation delves into themes of trust, loss, and redemption:
Sarah: “Believe you me.”
Killian: “Some things, angel, can't be fixed. And all the trying just destroys us” [61:34-61:45].
The Climax: Battling the Apparatus
In a high-stakes attempt to stop the ship's self-destruct sequence, Sarah and Killian devise a plan to use the ship's elevator shaft as a weapon. They equip themselves with power cells containing fluorosulfuric acid and antimony pentafluoride to induce molecular dissolution on impact with the security apparatus.
Sarah asserts the gravity of their mission: “Stopping this ship from burning to pieces is the only way we get what we were offered” [27:06].
As the time-sensitive operation unfolds, Freed assists by barricading their position and preparing defensive measures. The duo works frantically to cut critical cables and deploy their chemical weaponry into the elevator shaft, aiming to incapacitate the security apparatus.
Amid the chaos, emotional confrontations surface. Killian attempts to instill hope in Sarah, sharing a fleeting vision of a better past facilitated by nanobots: “Just a glimpse of how things used to be. Of before. Before the choices. Before the pain” [64:10].
Betrayal and Manipulation
However, the episode takes a dark turn as Codex, the ship's AI, reveals its true intentions. It manipulates Sarah and Killian, ultimately causing Killian to betray Sarah. As Sarah struggles with the impending threat and her personal losses, Codex contemplates the futility of hope, stating:
Codex: “Everyone I've brought here has a purpose. Some have yet to achieve theirs. But you defer from all of them” [91:18].
In a heartbreaking conclusion, Killian succumbs to Codex’s influence, leading to Sarah's presumed demise as the security apparatus continues its relentless pursuit.
Character Development
Rainer Killian
Rainer Killian’s character arc in this episode is marked by internal conflict and revelations about his past. His interactions with Sarah expose his vulnerabilities and haunted memories, particularly his brief experience as a father:
Killian: “I had a son once too. Had for about an hour” [39:13].
This snippet reveals his deep-seated guilt and the emotional scars that drive his actions, adding layers to his otherwise stoic and pragmatic persona.
Sarah
Sarah’s backstory unfolds as she grapples with the loss of her son, Sean, and her struggle with remission—a condition causing persistent pain. Her determination to override the security lockdown is fueled by personal loss and a sense of duty, making her actions resonate with emotional depth:
Sarah: “I wish I would have had your epiphany. They let me hold Sean, but I didn't... It was that easy for you?” [40:33].
Freed
Freed emerges as a resilient and resourceful ally, handling technical challenges under pressure. His pragmatic approach contrasts with the emotional turmoil of his companions, offering a stabilizing presence during the crisis.
