Now it is possible this is the year this bleak streak is finally broken, when, as wishfully expressed in cups past and present, football's indeed coming home when English people can finally celebrate it being all over it is now. But more likely, and as defeatist Brits may have already fated themselves to accept, the cup will prove elusive as yet more lifetimes end, having spanned cradle to grave, never having witnessed England win the greatest prize in sport or sports, whatever. Speaking of beef, we got to talk. We got to talk food segue. We can specifically talk about Geno's east, our chain for this week, but I do want to hear your thoughts on on. We've talked a lot about pizza, but like Italian beef in general because everyone thinks of like the Chicago pizza. Chicago Pizza both tavern style and deep dish. Your Chicago dog, of course, polarizing menu items. But, but the Italian beef is kind of like the, completes the, the trifecta.

And every time I've had an Italian beef, I've been delighted.

[Carmen Christopher]

This is important to me actually because this is actually my favorite food growing up. And you know, the Italian beef is Chicago. Every, every, it seems like a lot of cities have their, like, their meat type of sandwich. Like Philadelphia has the Philly cheesesteak, you can, New York has the chopped cheese. Chicago's version is, you know, the Italian beef. And it's different. It's very different. It's thinly shaved meat and it's, you know, it's soaked in, you know, this gravy, this juice and it needs to have a nice French bread with some hot jardiner or you put sweet peppers on it. There's like different variations. But essentially the best one for me growing up was bona beef and bona beef blew up and now they're sounds kind of fancier.

It sounds class. It sounds like a classier beef spot. I'm not sure if it is.

Yeah, well, no, it was just one spot and then it kind of like grew and you know, went to different parts of the suburbs. Bona means good in Italian and you know, I don't know if the quality is dipped off at the other locations. But, but that was my, that was always my number one choice. And now there's all different types of places to get an Italian beef. And there's some places that are popular that I don't think are even good and that, that have become touristy and I don't know if I want to dog on them. But you know, I think yeah, Italian beef, when it's done right is good. And I think the Italian beef we just had right now. Can I get into it, please? Not very good.

Oh no. What a bummer. Because I, I, this is the, and I think if we're talking about the, the regional meat based sandwiches, I, I certainly, I think the, the one people will credit to la is, is the French dip. Birth of the French dip. And Philippe's or Coles coals now shuttered, unfortunately. Philippe's is delightful, but you know, that, that's, that's kind of, I, I guess the, this city's claim. I, I, I probably have stronger opinions on French dips than I do on Italian beefs because I have so many fewer Italian beefs. And I will say having this Italian beef today from Geno's East, I was like, like, this is pretty good. I just don't have a point of reference for which ones are.

But also, my mom didn't know that they didn't have Italian beef outside of Chicago either, which I actually didn't either. When I was like, wait, this is only here you travel? And you're like, why isn't this everywhere? Because if it's done right, it's good. But I'm surprised. I'm not surprised. But wait, did you like it as well?

Quote, the original owners were Italian from Sicily and a first generation Italian American, but they didn't create the recipe for their signature deep dish. I feel like Giordano's had its time where it was, like, bigger when I was younger, and then Luminati's was the same thing where they had one location and then they just. Just popped off.
