dependable being Dependable it is so important that you be dependable in a marital situation. You are interdependent, which means you both have to be dependable. Now, there are a lot of reasons people make promises the truly they never intended to keep. But it sounded good at the moment, made everybody feel good, and it got them at a sticky moment. How to keep your word. Don't give it frivolously is the start. Be upfront, be honest. Do not say you will do something if you can't do it, or no, you really don't want to do it, therefore probably won't do it. And after you get caught, cut the crap. Don't say I forgot. I didn't mean to hurt you. I didn't mean to forget. I didn't mean not to do it. That's just nonsense. Unless there's something seriously wrong with your gray matter, you have to be honest and say so if you don't really want to do it. And I've been teaching people to do that for years. And it's very simple. What you need to say to somebody

but something has happened, you have no more information, you've thought it through further and you don't want to do it, and you have to sit down and say, I know I promised you this, but I will not follow through. Because I think a time like that you also have to explain why. Generally speaking, I tell people to keep it simple and don't give explanations. But if you promise something, time has passed and you didn't follow through, you damn well better say why.

If somebody can't count on you, they can't be close to you. Got to be able to fall and know the other's there to catch you no matter what. Unless there's some extraordinary thing. Now, a lot of you are either or have somebody who is passive aggressive. It's one of the most hideous personality disorders there is because it looks so nice. Oh, my gosh, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize I rang out. Oh, I did it wrong. Oh, dear. You didn't agree to that. Oh, I thought you had. They make you crazy. Do not marry a passive aggressive person. You will go nuts and not realize you're going nuts and think there's something wrong with you for going nuts. I've told my classic story of passive aggressive couple. Well, he was. She gave a long list of complaints and he's sitting there looking, aw, gee, this is. I'm so sorry she's unhappy. And I did my usual. Well, give me an example. Well, this weekend, I asked him if he would prune the bushes in the back. And I go outside and they are cut to the ground. And the husband looked up at me and said, that's not how you prune a bush. Innocently, sweetly, quietly. Poor me. You mean I made a mistake. Oh, my God. You realize how crazy making that is? Do not marry somebody who does that, please. You will not survive it. What I see in those situations is that the other person practically gets homicidal because there's no arguing. That's just.

Oh, really?
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
I was sorry. Oh, I didn't mean to hurt you. Upset you. Were you really? I did. Oh, my God. Oh. I said, what makes a marriage special is the interdependency to being able to depend on each other to minimize your need for the other person to be there for someone else, even if it hurts. If you're not willing or able to do that, do not marry. Get therapy. Figure out all your childhood angst, and then mary my number. 1-800-375-2872.
