Fine. So how are things going? Fine. Does that sound like you? The second part? That is fine. Look, you don't have to tell a stranger your life story, but you can at least be real. So it's fair to say to somebody, I don't want to get into it, have some problems to deal with, have me a little bit distracted. Thank you for asking. At least it's you being real. People are not real enough. Couples don't talk about the struggles they have making their marriages work. People don't talk about how nuts their kids make them sometimes and how they get close to crossing the line. Yelling, screaming, smacking. Pastors don't talk about struggling with doubt or fear or sin. Corporations, because of their attorneys, don't apologize for messes they've made or acknowledge they could have done better. We all want everything to look fine. A lot of denial. I hear this a million times a day. My husband and my wife does such and such and such and such and it's just terrible. But it's okay. So. And self doesn't want to talk to me, but it's okay. It's not okay. And the more you go into denial, the less growth and control you have over your life because your psyche is getting squashed by your determination to ignore reality. But as I said, everybody does not have to be privy for your things. I have passed people that I know going hither or thither and go, how are you doing? And they'll go, eh, as good as I can right now. Got stuff. And I go, well, I hope it gets better. Thank you. Now it's a real moment between two people without anybody saying anything personal. You see how hard I work on this program to get you folks to be blunt and truthful. You can't get better if you're not blunt and truthful. You can't. You're stuffing things away. So and so is not talking anymore. They don't want to see me. They want to talk. But it's okay. No, it's not. Of course it's not okay. Why would you say such a thing and deny the hurt, the pain, the disappointment, the frustration, the irritation, whatever?

How is your spiritual life? How is any other aspect of your life that's important to you? Get profoundly honest with yourself about where you're at, because you can't grow into more joy and happiness without looking at those things. And as I said, I always talk about the rings of Saturn. The closer rings you can be more open with the farther rings. No, not so much. But you can at least be honest. Things have been tough lately, but I'm hanging in there. I have my moments, thanks for asking. Then you actually had some level of interaction with another human being. And even that level of interaction will make you feel better because you're not just all holding it inside and trying to look perfect. My number 1-800-375-2872.

Episode: Being Honest When You’re Having a Moment
Date: August 9, 2026
Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Platform: SiriusXM, DrLaura.com
This episode of The Dr. Laura Podcast centers on the importance of honesty—both with ourselves and with others—especially when we’re not at our best. Dr. Laura challenges listeners to move beyond rote answers like “I’m fine” and embrace more honest, truthful communication about the real state of their lives, emotions, relationships, and struggles. The discussion covers why bottling up or denying problems is counterproductive and how even small honest interactions can foster connection and growth.
Dr. Laura opens with a critique of the default “I’m fine” response to everyday greetings.
Emphasizes that it’s not necessary (or appropriate) to share your private struggles with everyone but encourages being “real” in your responses.
Dr. Laura notes a cultural reluctance to admit when things aren’t okay, whether in marriages, parenting, religious life, or corporations (due to legal advice).
Provides examples of small but honest exchanges:
Dr. Laura invokes her “rings of Saturn” metaphor:
Highlights the positive psychological effect of acknowledging struggles, even in passing, instead of bottling them up.
The cost of denial:
“People are not real enough. Couples don't talk about the struggles they have making their marriages work. People don't talk about how nuts their kids make them sometimes ... we all want everything to look fine. A lot of denial … It’s not okay. And the more you go into denial, the less growth and control you have over your life.” — Dr. Laura (02:57–03:32)
On honesty in relationships and personal growth:
“Honestly, how are your relationships? How are you emotionally? How is your spiritual life? ... Get profoundly honest with yourself about where you're at, because you can't grow into more joy and happiness without looking at those things.” — Dr. Laura (07:44–07:58)
Practical script for honest interaction:
“Things have been tough lately, but I’m hanging in there. I have my moments, thanks for asking.” — Dr. Laura (07:51)
Dr. Laura’s signature direct, no-nonsense tone comes through clearly. She’s compassionate, but always candid—pushing people to face reality, ditch self-delusion, and find healthy ways to connect with others even in brief social exchanges.
If you find yourself defaulting to “I’m fine” when you’re anything but, Dr. Laura’s message is for you. She explores the adverse impact of constant denial and encourages practical, honest responses that balance privacy with authenticity. Applying her advice fosters more genuine connection—even in passing moments—and lays the groundwork for greater personal growth and emotional well-being.
