Caller Courtney
Hello Dr. Laura, how are you?
Dr. Laura
Hi. Good. How can I help?
Caller Courtney
I'm in a situation where I. I am planning to get a separation from my husband.
Dr. Laura
You mean a legal separation, not a divorce?
Caller Courtney
Yeah, legal separation, not a divorce.
Dr. Laura
Okay. And what are you hoping to accomplish with the legal separation?
Caller Courtney
I just want to live my life with my cage and co parent in a peaceful manner. And that's it. I. I don't.
Dr. Laura
In your mind, how is that different from a divorce?
Caller Courtney
Well, it stems from religious beliefs.
Dr. Laura
And what religious belief is that? From what religion?
Caller Courtney
I prefer not to say.
Dr. Laura
Oh, okay, so you have a religion which doesn't allow you a divorce, so you'd like to do a legal separation, is that correct?
Caller Courtney
No, we can get a divorce, but I. Oh, right, yeah, we can get a divorce, but I just. Right now I'm. I want to do the legal separation because first if divorce comes, then divorce comes.
Dr. Laura
I want to do a legal separation first. Because.
Caller Courtney
Because that's what I want to do now. Like, I want. I. I feel like that's the best decision for me.
Dr. Laura
Okay. I just need some logic, explanation. You can't repeat something by saying, I feel like I want it because I feel like I want it. That doesn't give me any information. So what are you hoping will happen in this legal separation?
Caller Courtney
That I'm left in peace. That my emotional and mental flee will remain peaceful and I continue to raise my kids and my husband does the same. And.
Dr. Laura
And why do you think he'd be okay with a legal separation?
Caller Courtney
Because he has no choice. I want to leave. He can't. Okay.
Dr. Laura

Caller Courtney
Sorry, I'm gathering my thoughts.
Dr. Laura
You called, hoping I could help you. In what way?
Caller Courtney
In a way I know. I know what I need to do. And it's hard to believe because you just hope and change you. There's, you know, there's been a lot of emotional and verbal abuse about the 12 years of being married.
Dr. Laura
Okay, what is emotional abuse?
Caller Courtney
What.
Dr. Laura
What is he doing that's abusive?
Caller Courtney
What he. Belittling. He. He has. It's not. He has a temper problem. That's what I mean. He has a temper problem. And when there's conflict, it. He turns into this rage. And he only shows it to me. And it gets to a point where he comes at me and points the finger at my face. And I keep telling Jimmy's face, but he's like, you are gonna have to hear what I have to say. There's just so many conflicts and fights that we have had.
Dr. Laura
And how did you handle his temper when you were dating? Were you doing something different? How did you handle it?
Caller Courtney
Well, while we were dating, he didn't show it.
Dr. Laura
Ah, so how. How much time has he been like this?
Caller Courtney
It's always been in there because it was done to him as a child. His father did it to his mother and all.
Dr. Laura
Okay, but you just said he didn't do it. When you were dating, did you date him for 20 minutes or did you date him for a few years or.
Caller Courtney
We dated for a year, and then within seven months, we were married. We got engaged at a year and then seven months.
Dr. Laura
So in a year and seven months, he never showed this annoying aspect?
Caller Courtney
No.
Dr. Laura
Ah, so he turned it on right after the wedding?
Caller Courtney
Yeah, it. Once we got married and we had entered into a conflict, and that's where it happened because.
Dr. Laura
And then you had two. And you had two kids with him. In spite of it.
Caller Courtney
Yeah.
Charles Barkley
Okay.
Dr. Laura
All right. So what question do you have for me?
Caller Courtney
What advice can you give me in regards? About what? About me leaving?
Dr. Laura
Well, you got to get a good attorney, and I would get that immediately. Somebody who deals in these things and knows how to deal with a spouse who's very angry. So you've got to get somebody to help you because his anger is going to escalate when you do this because he'll have no access to you and sex and cooking dinner and the kids except for visitation. And he has to pay the money to support you in addition to supporting himself. I assume that's going to make him angry. So you need a good attorney who can handle that well. So ask around. Get a good referral. That's what you're going to need right now. 1-800-375-2872. If you like this podcast, be sure to rate it on Apple Podcasts or your favorite place to listen to my podcast.
