Learn more@goldencrestmetals.com Protect Remember, you can hear my radio program daily on Sirius XM Triumph and connect with me 247 at@drlaura.com forget about this nonsense of date nights. I think it's nonsense. I always thought it was nonsense. Once a week we're going to go out to dinner, get a babysitter, whatever. Get a dog sitter, get a cat sitter. Once a week we're going to go to dinner, dress up, sit in a restaurant, pay too much. The tips are now getting out of control and we're supposed to feel better about each other and our marriage. Poppycock. Nonsense. I mean, it's nice if you want to do that. I really don't care, but it's not really going to make that much of a difference. So I read this article by accident by Abby Watts in imom.com get a lot of cute things from imom.com and she's nicer than me about date nights. She makes it. Oh yeah, it's nice if you can do it. But you know, a lot of people don't even think about things like that because they think, oh, my marriage is solid. I think we're fine. No, no, no, no, no. Maybe you're on a budget. Maybe you have a child with special needs. Maybe you and your husband work opposite shifts. Maybe date nights aren't really that feasible. So what do we do? She has a cute thing here, she said. My friend mentioned her four year old date hiatus. Someone at the table said, so when do you guys connect? Realize the mentality is you will connect once a week. The rest of the time you're off doing your shtick, right? No, she said. Well, one night we grabbed the baby monitor, sat in the car in the driveway, listened to our wedding remix and had a little beer and got it on in the backseat of the car. I added that part. She left it having them chat. Nonsense. You're in the backseat of the car getting it on. Cool. How about that for connection reminiscing? How about when you were teenagers doing this nonsense? It's so cool. That's. That's not as good as a date night in some restaurant where they don't even make your food properly and it's too spicy. Yeah, really. Some period during the day, some moment, some hour during the day. Being attentive, showing respect, cooperating on something.

Date nights are nice, but it's nonsense because it's usually not filled with a lot of communication or cooperation. It's filled with sitting in a freaking restaurant. And Americans don't eat at restaurants nearly as much. Americans didn't eat in the olden days, eat at restaurants nearly as much now. Can you really imagine parents in the 1940s or 50s leaving their kids a few times a month? No. Marriages have been happy and healthy for centuries without a regular date night. It's a regular day. You need to be more intentional. Turn off the tv, light a candle after the kids go to bed, bring each other a glass of wine. Put bubbles in your tub. If you have a hot tub, put bubbles in that and relax and talk to each other. Dates aren't going to be a part of a routine. Oh my God, it's Thursday. We have to do a date night. There are millions of ways to show attention. So how can you mimic the special feeling of a date night when you don't really have the ability to have a date night? Stop doing your routine nonsense where you read to yourself, watch TV by yourself, do some hobby by yourself, see your friends separate from your spouse. There are a lot of things you need to punctuate better with being loving and fun. I remember my daughter in law and I were somewhere. Oh we were getting facials. That's it. We were getting facials and looking at the doodads they have for sale. You know, they put a lot of expensive stuff in. You need this. Look at your face. You need this. Anyway, I said to her I'm going to be intrusive for a moment. The most important part of your marriage to my son is you keep having fun together. They are really nuts together. They travel and do cool stuff for holidays and parties and adventures. They're very adventure driven local or otherwise. And they have so much silly, silly fun. And I think it's the key to their bonding because that relaxes you with each other and it's pleasant and it gives great memories and the feeling lasts a long time. I mean, they do silly stuff. I get videos sometimes they're just doing silly stuff with the cats they're rescuing. You know, don't ask about that. I think they're getting overwhelmed with the rescues, but they're committed. Okay, so you need to be more intentional. Do stuff all day. My number 1-800-375-2872. If you like this podcast, be sure to rate it on Apple Podcasts or your favorite place to listen to my podcast. The Dr. Laura Podcast
Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Date: April 13, 2026
This episode challenges the popular notion that couples require regular “date nights” to maintain a happy, connected marriage. Dr. Laura Schlessinger shares her perspective, referencing both personal experiences and an article she read, to argue that authentic connection and daily intentionality matter far more than forced, ritualized outings. Instead of subscribing to societal pressures around date nights, she urges couples to find genuine ways to connect in their everyday lives.
“Forget about this nonsense of date nights. I think it's nonsense. I always thought it was nonsense.” (Dr. Laura, 01:00)
“Well, one night we grabbed the baby monitor, sat in the car in the driveway, listened to our wedding remix and had a little beer...”
(Dr. Laura, paraphrasing Abby Watts’ article, 03:13)
“How about when you were teenagers doing this nonsense? It's so cool.” (Dr. Laura, 03:44)
Key Message: Connection doesn’t have to happen during scheduled “date nights.” Instead, couples should find and create moments for each other throughout daily life.
Suggestions include:
“It's a regular day. You need to be more intentional. Turn off the tv, light a candle after the kids go to bed, bring each other a glass of wine. Put bubbles in your tub. If you have a hot tub, put bubbles in that and relax and talk to each other.” (Dr. Laura, 07:03)
What matters is not the form, but the intention behind connecting.
“Can you really imagine parents in the 1940s or 50s leaving their kids a few times a month? No. Marriages have been happy and healthy for centuries without a regular date night.” (Dr. Laura, 06:56)
“I think it's the key to their bonding because that relaxes you with each other and it's pleasant and it gives great memories and the feeling lasts a long time.” (Dr. Laura, 08:39)
Dr. Laura concludes that showing love should be consistent and “punctuated” through everyday moments, not sequestered into a once-a-week ritual.
“You need to be more intentional. Do stuff all day.” (Dr. Laura, 10:18)
Dr. Laura’s characteristic blend of sarcasm, warmth, and directness permeates the episode. She is frank (“poppycock,” “nonsense”), playful, and ultimately encouraging, pushing listeners to question cultural norms and rediscover personal, authentic ways to nurture their relationships.
“Marriages have been happy and healthy for centuries without a regular date night. It’s being attentive, showing respect, cooperating on something… That’s the real connection.” (Dr. Laura, summary of main message)
