Carrie welcome to the program.
Caller (Carrie)
Hi Dr. Laura. Thank you for taking my call.
Dr. Laura
Thank you. How can I help?
Caller (Carrie)
I am 53 years old and I'm still wrestling with anger toward my dad and stepmom who committed adultery and My dad left my mother to marry his secretary who he had this adulterous affair with. And my dad is dead. He never really confessed or repented of what he did to destroy my foundation growing up. My stepmom is still alive and she has never repented or confessed anything. And I'm wondering, am I required to forgive an unrepentant person?
Dr. Laura
Are you a Christian? Because if you are, your religion tells you you're supposed to. I don't agree with that. So you know your religion's point of view, is that correct?
Caller (Carrie)
I am a Christian. Yes.
Dr. Laura
So I said. So you know the Christian point of view on forgiveness, is that correct?
Caller (Carrie)
Oh, well, it's kind of varied. It depends. Because God forgives us when we repent of our sins to him.
Dr. Laura
Okay. You understand this is not a religious program. And I do not answer questions based on anybody's religion.
Caller (Carrie)
Yeah, that's fine. I just want to know your.
Dr. Laura
I consider.
I consider. Thank you. I consider forgiveness one of the most sacred things one can engage in. And I believe it requires four things from the wrongdoer. One, to take four Rs. One is to take responsibility, is to acknowledge what you've done and the impact it's had. Responsibility. Second one is to have true remorse. Second R, I suspect that's a little hard to know what's in somebody's heart, but you can sort of tell by their behavior how remorseful they feel. Ultimately. There you go. Then it's repair. Not everything can be repaired, but it's an effort they must make to do something to repair the damage they've done. And the last R is not to repeat it. Well, I think at this point in life, that's not going to happen.

Dr. Laura
So we start out at the top,
taking full responsibility, admitting what they did and admitting the pain and destruction that came from theirs. And having true remorse. That's the only thing. We only have the two Rs with her. She's an old woman and everybody's dead. So that is my point of view, that it is so sacred and it's a two way experience. It requires the wrongdoer to do the full Rs. 4 hours or else.
It's just a silly thing.
I forgive you.
Yeah. I mean, it's just a silly thing.
Caller (Carrie)
Yeah, yeah. And there's nothing in me because she hasn't done any of those. And there's just nothing in me that wants to forgive someone who. I don't care.
Dr. Laura
That's fine. That's fine. Just get on with your life. Don't perpetuate the pain by thinking about
it, talking about it, going over it
again and again and again, continuing to see yourself as a victim of it.
You have to let go of all
of that stuff and just get on with your life. Shrug your shoulders. That's what they did. And I'm alive and I'm going to do good things. That's it. You get on with your life. Let it go.
Caller (Carrie)
Okay. Thank you.
Dr. Laura
Don't forgive. Just let it go. Ah, you're very welcome. 1-800-375-2872.

Episode: Forgiveness and Unrepentant Offenders
Date: July 19, 2026
Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Platform: SiriusXM / DrLaura.com
This episode of The Dr. Laura Podcast centers on the challenges of forgiving those who are unrepentant offenders—particularly in cases where the wrongdoer never admitted their fault or sought reconciliation. Dr. Laura takes a listener call from Carrie, who grapples with whether she must forgive her late father and living stepmother, neither of whom ever acknowledged or showed remorse for the pain their actions caused. The conversation focuses on the nature of forgiveness, its prerequisites, and finding personal closure independent of the other party’s actions.
Caller Carrie’s Dilemma
Religion vs. Personal Values:
Dr. Laura clarifies her advice isn’t based on religious doctrine, despite Carrie identifying as a Christian.
“You understand this is not a religious program. And I do not answer questions based on anybody's religion.” (03:56)
The Four Rs of Forgiveness:
Dr. Laura offers her framework for true forgiveness, requiring the wrongdoer to demonstrate:
Dr. Laura’s practical stance:
“With her [the stepmother], you only have the two Rs… She's an old woman, and everybody’s dead. So that is my point of view: it is so sacred and it’s a two-way experience.” (07:55)
Dr. Laura summarizes her philosophy on forgiveness:
“Forgiveness is so sacred and it’s a two way experience. It requires the wrongdoer to do the full Rs or else… It’s just a silly thing.” (07:55)
On letting go versus forgiving:
“Don't forgive. Just let it go. Ah, you're very welcome.” (09:12)
Carrie’s realization:
“There's just nothing in me that wants to forgive someone who... I don't care.” (08:32)
Useful for listeners seeking personal closure after betrayal or hurt when the wrongdoer denies responsibility, this episode offers a pragmatic, non-religious perspective on true forgiveness and emotional freedom.
