Caller Carolyn
Thank you so much for having me. I'm me, my mom and my sister are just obsessed with you, honestly.
Dr. Laura
Oh, thank you.
Caller Carolyn
Yeah, so, yeah, I'll give you a brief synopsis. So I have always have had a little bit of an issue with spending my money, even before I was married. And so my husband's very much a saver.
Dr. Laura
I'm sorry, what is an issue of spending money? What does that mean?
Caller Carolyn
I, I wouldn't necessarily drain my bank account, but like when I had jobs, like if I had 300 in account, I'd drain it down to like 50 bucks and it's just like buying like stuff that I like and honestly, little trinkets here and there, but like I, I've gotten a lot better on it, but that's kind of what it used to be, if that makes sense.
Dr. Laura
Okay. Yeah.
Caller Carolyn
Okay. So month old boy and I'm wanting to purchase things like formula or a new car seat because he's gotten a lot bigger faster than I thought he would. And I have to ask my husband like, hey, can I buy A car seat. And he'll say, no, we can't afford it right now. And I'm like, well, he's not fitting in the car seat right now. I feel like that's kind of a dangerous thing. And also, like, I have a huge crack in my windshield and we have. He's making me wait like a couple months for it when I know technically it's probably not legal to drive around with a cracked windshield. So I'm just curious how I can create a fair system where I have access to the necessities without.
Dr. Laura
Are you aware of what money is in the bank?
Caller Carolyn
Yes. Yeah.
Dr. Laura
And is it accurate that you can't get a proper car seat so your kid's going to be endangered? Is that accurate that there's no money to buy a car seat?
Caller Carolyn
So I ended up getting the car seat after asking him multiple times.
Dr. Laura
I asked you a question. It would really be helpful if you answered my question. Was it accurate that he said. He said there wasn't enough money to buy the car seat. Was that true?
Caller Carolyn
No, he didn't say that. He said we can't afford it right now.
Dr. Laura
How is that different from we don't have the money to pay for it?
Caller Carolyn
I'm not sure. Sorry.
Dr. Laura
There isn't any difference.
Caller Carolyn
Okay,

Dr. Laura
So my question is, was there money in the bank to get the car seat, which is a necessity, not a trinket. So you're going to have to sit with your husband and say, I understand that you're aware that in the past I would be frivolous with money, but I don't expect to be told and I will not follow not spending on things that are dangerous and have to do with the welfare of the family. The car windshield will be fixed. I made the appointment. The car seat, as you said, I bought because it's dangerous and I don't want our child to get hurt. So sweetheart, when you're concerned about me being frivolous about money, please don't include life and death things.
Caller Carolyn
Okay? Got it. So me say that. So don't include life and death things. For purchases, yes.
Dr. Laura
Okay, you need to car seat, that's a life and death thing. The windshield, that's the life and death thing. Food, life and death thing. Medicine, life and death thing. Warm clothes, life and death thing.
Caller Carolyn
Okay. Would you consider buying new clothes for him when he outgrows it as well?
Dr. Laura
There are so many really cool resale places and thrift places where you can get a ton of stuff for almost nothing. And then when he outgrows it in two months you wash it. Iron it, donate it, and go get stuff that fits. It's really kind of stupid to be buying new clothes all the time for kids. They outgrow it in 20 seconds. It's a waste of money. I don't. I don't do that.
Caller Carolyn
Yeah, okay, maybe I should. I'll probably do that. That's a good idea.
Dr. Laura
Okay, good.
Caller Carolyn
All right.
Dr. Laura
All right, sweetheart.
Caller Carolyn
Sorry. I have one more question because my sister and my mom listen to this. Can you mention to them to basically let me deal with my marriage by myself without their advice?
Dr. Laura
Well, do you ask for advice or do they. You tell your story and then they give you advice. How do they end up giving you advice? How does that come about?
Caller Carolyn
Kind of both. Like, I kind of say, like, oh, I'm not allowed to, or I'm not.
Dr. Laura
Okay, Carolyn, instead of point painting your husband as some kind of controlling, abusive man, I suggest you. You shut up. If he really is that, then you need an attorney. If you're just being bitchy, you got to stop that. So you can't tell your sister and your mother to not give advice when you're going and painting horrible pictures. And then they get worried and concerned about you. So stop talking about your husband in anything but nice terms.
Caller Carolyn
Yeah. All right, well, I think you answered my question, and I really appreciate your help, actually.
Dr. Laura
