Well, thank you, Dr. Laura. Longtime listener, first time caller. The reason I'm calling is I drive truck over the road and I, I had a Buddy, my dog and we ran together for, for 12 years.
A
Wow.
B
Pretty much were never apart. Yeah. Yeah, the only time we were apart is if I dropped him at the vet. And I mean, we were, we were tight. I knew what he was thinking. He.
A
I know he knew what you were thinking. Yep.
B
Yeah, we could, we could look, we could read each other. He, he had a rough, rough last day. Started out at the vet and for just routine, you know, routine visit and he was, my goodness. I think Buddy was almost 20 years old.
A
Oh wow.
B
Corgi. And yeah, he lived a long time, that dude. I. Yeah, yeah, I noticed that the last couple of weeks he was trying to tell me that, you know, dogs, they know what's going on and he was trying to let me know and I just ignored it. So he's gone, I'm in the truck by myself. And I guess my biggest problem is, is I just regret that I didn't slow down and just spend more time with him that last couple of days. I feel really bad about that last day because going to the doc, the vet stressed him anyway and he went to the vet and she was like, things are not going well and he started having convulsions, seizures and oh man, it's a just tear your heart out. So she started giving him shots to chill him out and so he I got him back home and he had one last little seizure and that was it. And so I had him all cremated, you know. And anyway, guess I'm calling because I'm having a hard time dealing with not having my dog anymore. Because we were, you know, we were.

You know, I've thought about, well, just respecting my boy and mourning his loss.
A
Oh, please. Dog loved you so much that the dog wants you to suffer and not join in another relationship with another animal. That's what you think your dog would. Would consider respect? Go to your room.
B
No, not Buddy. No, Buddy wouldn't. Buddy want. No, I want to get another dog. Go ahead. I just go ahead as soon as possible.
A
Yeah, that shows respect. That shows respect to your dog.
B
Yeah. Yeah. Well, yeah, that's what.
A
You loved Buddy so much. He loved you so much that you don't want to give up on that love to a pet. That's lovely.
B
Yeah, it was. I don't think I've ever been this torn up for a person, but we.
A
Probably never spent this amount of time with a person, you know? Come on.
B
No, no. I mean, I've given up relationships for. For my dog.
A
See what I mean?
B
I, you know. Yeah. I. I mean, I wouldn't. Yeah, I wouldn't give. Yeah, my dog was top, top priority, so. Yeah.
A
Okay.
B
I know that that's what I need to do, so do it by the.
A
End of the weekend. Well, one thing a vet told me one time, and I'd like to share it with you. She said, don't get the exact same type of dog because what happens psychologically is, is that you have the expectation that it's almost cloned and it's going to be the same dog, and that's you're less likely to be fair with the new dog because it'll always let you down because it's not going to be Buddy. So her recommendation was get a different kind of dog.
B
True. Yeah. Buddy was a bum, so.
A
Well, go to a rescue and get another bum.
B
Yeah, he was quite unique.
A
All right, sir.
B
You're right. Yeah, I just. All right, well, thank you, Dr. Laura.

Release Date: February 11, 2025
Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Platform: SiriusXM Triumph 111
In the episode titled "I Can't Imagine Replacing My Pup," Dr. Laura Schlessinger delves into the profound emotions surrounding the loss of a beloved pet. Addressing listeners' heartfelt concerns, Dr. Laura provides compassionate guidance on grieving, healing, and the complexities of moving forward after the passing of a cherished animal companion.
Cody, a truck driver and longtime listener, shares his emotional journey following the loss of his dog, Buddy. For twelve years, Cody and Buddy were inseparable, demonstrating a deep bond that went beyond the typical pet-owner relationship.
Key Conversations:
Unbreakable Bond:
Cody emphasizes the closeness he shared with Buddy, stating, "Pretty much were never apart" (01:37). This statement underscores the depth of their relationship and sets the stage for his ensuing grief.
Buddy’s Final Days:
Cody recounts Buddy's deteriorating health, mentioning, "Buddy was almost 20 years old" (02:17). He describes the heartbreaking moments at the vet, where Buddy suffered seizures and ultimately passed away after receiving sedation to ease his distress.
Regret and Reflection:
A significant portion of Cody's anguish stems from regrets over not spending more quality time with Buddy in his final days. He shares, "I just regret that I didn't slow down and just spend more time with him that last couple of days" (02:17), highlighting common feelings of remorse that many pet owners experience after a loss.
Dr. Laura engages Cody in a meaningful dialogue to help him navigate his grief:
Respecting Grief:
Dr. Laura challenges Cody's initial resistance to mourning properly, asserting, "Dog loved you so much that the dog wants you to suffer and not join in another relationship with another animal" (07:48). This provokes Cody to reconsider his approach to grieving and opening up to new relationships, even with another pet.
Advice on Replacing a Pet:
Reflecting on professional advice from veterinarians, Dr. Laura shares, "Don't get the exact same type of dog because what happens psychologically is that you have the expectation that it's almost cloned" (09:11). This recommendation aims to prevent unrealistic expectations and foster a healthier bond with a new pet.
Encouragement to Move Forward:
Emphasizing the importance of honoring Buddy's memory while allowing oneself to heal, Dr. Laura suggests adopting a different type of dog from a rescue, stating, "Go to a rescue and get another bum" (09:48). This advice encourages embracing a new relationship without the shadows of past expectations.
Cody on His Bond with Buddy:
"Pretty much were never apart." (01:37)
Cody Expressing Regret:
"I just regret that I didn't slow down and just spend more time with him that last couple of days." (02:17)

Dr. Laura’s Advice on Getting a New Pet:
"Don't get the exact same type of dog because what happens psychologically is that you have the expectation that it's almost cloned." (09:11)
The episode concludes with Cody acknowledging the validity of Dr. Laura's advice. He recognizes the necessity of honoring Buddy's memory while allowing himself to form a new bond with another pet. Dr. Laura reinforces the importance of moving forward thoughtfully, ensuring that new relationships are built on genuine connections rather than attempts to replace what was lost.
Cody expresses his intent to adopt another dog, understanding that while Buddy holds a special place in his heart, embracing a new companion can aid in his healing process: "I want to get another dog. Go ahead. I just go ahead as soon as possible." (08:17)
Dr. Laura's empathetic approach provides listeners with both comfort and practical advice for dealing with pet loss. By addressing the emotional complexities and encouraging proactive steps toward healing, the episode serves as a valuable resource for anyone grappling with similar feelings of grief and loss.
