Antonio (Caller)
Hi, Dr. Laura. Thank you.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Thank you. What can I do for you?
Antonio (Caller)
So I need help figuring out the right thing, and then once we figure it out, I need a game plan.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Okay, tell me.
Antonio (Caller)
So I. Thanks to you, I found a great partner and we're getting married soon.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
June, what is a partner? I don't know what a partner is usually. I have partners in my company.
Antonio (Caller)
I know, and I. Damn it, I know you hate that word. We're gay. And so it's. It's a word that we sometimes use. But. Yeah, he's a fiance now.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Well, I don't. I think it's. It's dismissive of the truth of your relationship. My boyfriend, My fiance. That makes it very clear the amount of emotional investment you have. My partner? I have no investment.
Antonio (Caller)
He is my awesome. I'll tell you that. Then
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
you chose well. You promise?
Antonio (Caller)
Absolutely. With your help.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Okay. I know he did. So let's move on. All right. So what's happening?
Antonio (Caller)
It's a small wedding. Very small. It's on a boat. You'd be very happy. And so we have a very limited. We have limited capacity.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
How big is the boat? How big is the boat?
Antonio (Caller)
I think it's a 65 foot yacht.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Honey, babe, that ain't small.
Antonio (Caller)
Well, it's a dinner cruise, so there's only so many people I can have.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
It is not small. Okay, what do you consider a small wedding? 100?
Antonio (Caller)
No, no, no. You can. It's about 30 max. Because it's dinner, right?
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Oh, okay. So tables. Yeah.
Antonio (Caller)
Yeah. So, yeah, if you're just standing around, I think you can squeeze a lot more. Right? Yes, but we. We really only want to invite people who've been a part of our, you know, coupleship and really encouraged us and supported.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Of course. Of course.
Antonio (Caller)
And. And I've learned that from you. And. But however, sometimes family isn't in that category. And so that's kind of what. I don't know what to do. I don't.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Nothing. You can't satisfy everybody, but you can tell. Hey, guys, why don't you have some kind of big reception party a week or so after we come back from our honeymoon? Reception party and invite 2,000 people if you'd like. And they have to pay for it.
Walmart Advertiser
Of course.
Antonio (Caller)
Certainly. We certainly thought of that.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Yeah.
Antonio (Caller)
Well,
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Antonio, if you've listened to the program and you made this decision based on what you've heard me say, you have to have the balls to stand by it. This is what we want. This is the memory we want. We know we're disappointing people, so if you'd like to have some kind of party way before or way after, we'd be delighted to participate in that. But this is what we want for the wedding. That's it. Be a man. Stand by it. They're disappointed. They're upset. That's the land of yeah. And. Okay, sorry.
Antonio (Caller)
And I hear that. And I don't mind disappointing that the. The people that we don't want there, but I don't want to disappoint my dad. Because I do want him there.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
What does that mean? You weren't going to have your dad there. Why not?
Antonio (Caller)
My dad is. My dad is going to be there. But he. He would want all of my siblings there because he's big on family and. And he's always taught us that family is very.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Okay, you tell him he has two options. Get a 200 foot yacht or call me. Seriously, tell him to rent a 200 foot yacht and he can invite whoever the hell he wants. He won't do that. Okay, I'm sorry. He's going to be disappointed. This is your wedding, and you decided only the people that helped the two of you become confident people who found each other. And maybe your siblings weren't part of that, so there's no reason to have them there just because they're related just because your mom and dad had sex more than once.
Antonio (Caller)
Got it.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger

I love it. And the game plan would be how do I I mean we're gonna it's this weekend is his birthday and I was that was when I was gonna tell my sisters. So how do I invite one of them and not invite the other one? And in in person here I don't
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
understand what you're talking. Suddenly you.
Antonio (Caller)
So we're going to. I have two sisters.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
If you're getting married this weekend, you didn't already have the invites out?
Antonio (Caller)
No, the party. There's a party, a Super bowl thing that they're all going to be at, and this is when we were going to tell them about the June wedding.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
No, you're not using the super bowl to talk about weddings. No.
Antonio (Caller)
Okay.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
No. Bad. Bad thing. Bad idea. You don't mix and match moods. Don't do it.
Antonio (Caller)
Got it. Okay.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Don't do it, please. So then somebody brings it up. Somebody brings it up. Say, you know what? We'll talk about all of that some other time. Right now, I just want to look at the football game. It is football we're talking about, right?
Antonio (Caller)
Yeah.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Okay.
Olivia from Ollie
There you go.
Antonio (Caller)
So do I have a phone call with the ones that are invited and the ones that aren't? Later.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Okay. Why? What. What is the difference between the ones that are and aren't? Tell me what the difference is.
Antonio (Caller)
Well, I got two sisters. One of them, we're close and she supports, and, you know, it's great. The other one is just. Is. She's difficult. She's a pain in the ass, like you've said before. I mean, I could give you all kinds of examples, but she's just a. She's difficult. She's always a pain in the ass.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
And was she supportive of you coming out and developing this relationship?
Antonio (Caller)
I would say yes. It's not.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
You made that the original criterion when you said you only wanted to invite people who stood by you for that painting. The s or not, she functions in that way, so she deserves the invite. Just sit her very far from you.
Antonio (Caller)
55ft.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
It's going to.
Disney Cruise Announcer
Yes.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
It's going to be a long sweetheart. It's going to be a long table. Yeah. If you're going to keep true to what you told me was the reason somebody got invited, then she gets the invitation. By the way, are you east coast or West Coast?
Antonio (Caller)
San Francisco Bay.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Okay. It's a little windy and chilly, but that's okay. That'll be very nice.
Antonio (Caller)
Well, Dance City wasn't going because of the seasickness, so you're definitely invited. Absolutely.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger

The Dr. Laura Podcast Episode: I Don't Want My Pain-in-the-Butt Sister at My Wedding! Date: February 24, 2026 Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
In this episode, Dr. Laura counsels a caller, Antonio, who is seeking advice on whether to invite his difficult sister to his upcoming wedding, given constraints on guest numbers and family expectations. The discussion dives into the nuance of family dynamics, the importance of setting boundaries, and how to communicate difficult decisions with loved ones—while staying true to one’s values and the couple’s wishes.
When and How to Tell Siblings:
Antonio wonders about breaking the news during an upcoming Super Bowl party but Dr. Laura cautions strongly against introducing serious topics in festive settings:
Approaching Individual Conversations:
Dr. Laura probes what differentiates the invited and non-invited siblings.
Dr. Laura maintains her signature candid, straightforward tone—direct, supportive, and unafraid to challenge the caller’s thinking. Antonio is honest and seeks validation, sometimes anxious, but receptive to feedback.
This episode exemplifies Dr. Laura’s practical, no-nonsense approach to family conflict and major life events. Listeners are encouraged to prioritize the core values and people that genuinely support their happiness, while respectfully acknowledging (but not necessarily acquiescing to) family pressure. Dr. Laura’s tough-love, principle-driven guidance anchors the episode:
“If you're going to keep true to what you told me was the reason somebody got invited, then she gets the invitation. Just sit her very far from you.” (Dr. Laura, 10:30)
For anyone managing tough family dynamics around major milestones, this episode delivers both clarity and compassion—with plenty of Dr. Laura’s trademark directness.
