Melaina
Hi Dr. Laura, thank you for taking my call.
Dr. Laura
Thank you.
Melaina
Third time caller. So Dan and I try to get my husband on the phone to talk about it with you as well, but my husband did not want to talk. So I guess Dan, let me talk to you. Okay. That made me sad. That made me sad that my husband didn't want to talk. But the question was about his. That caller that called about her parents that only see the grandchildren twice a year and that is what my in laws are, they only see their grandkids twice a year. There this year was only once a year and before my mother in law left she made a hateful comment in front of my daughter to me about my ancestry and I, I've always identified.
Dr. Laura
With you because tell me the quote quote it, don't paraphrase it quote what she said in front of my 8.
Melaina
Year old daughter, in front of my 8 year old daughter and my 5 year old daughter she said you my family of origin is Brazilian. I'm a naturalized citizen. So she says you mentioned that you were going to leave the country with the girls this year in the summer to take them to see Brazil. What's going to happen when you try to get back into the country and you're not seen as a citizen now and they're going to block you and the girls from coming back and because under, under the new administration you're not a citizen. And I said excuse me. And she said yeah, you know, you're not going to be seen like that. You're going to be seen as, as an, as an immigrant.
Dr. Laura
Okay, I need to understand something. Are you a citizen?
Melaina
Of course I've been a citizen since I was 19. My parents have fought.
Dr. Laura
Melena, calm down. Stop. I just asked a simple yes, no Question. Well, when she said you're not a citizen, why didn't you just say, yeah, I am?

Melaina
I guess because I was just so taken aback by such. I gotta know because it's.
Dr. Laura
How about we look at it differently? How about we look at it as. She doesn't know if you're a naturalized citizen and she's concerned about the current state of affairs with illegals coming here and being deported. How about she was showing worry instead of being mean? How about that as a possibility?
Melaina
Well, she knows I'm a naturalized citizen. I've been with her son for 20 years, so. Okay, it was a hateful comment.
Dr. Laura
Yeah, I get it. Okay. I was just giving it one shot.
Melaina
Yeah, I know. Yeah.
Dr. Laura
And okay, can you. Can you tell me why she would do that? Why she would be hateful? What's what's in it for her?
Melaina
Fight me. Because she. Because she knows that I voted the opposite way of her. And she was trying to like Pokemon. Yeah. She was trying to be political with me in front of my daughter. And my daughter started crying saying, I don't want to go back to Brazil. Mom, are we not Americans? And now my daughter will not is embarrassed to be around my parents when they speak their native language, Portuguese. And she says to my. My mom and dad, Vovo and Vovo, don't let them know you're from Brazil. Don't let them know that you're from another country. And my mom is heartbroken. And this happened twice now.
Dr. Laura
And I don't want to. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Stop. This is getting ridiculous now. I don't understand why you didn't say to your daughter something so obvious as she's lying. She's being mean because she didn't want me to vote the way I voted for president. It's not true. It's just stupid, mean stuff. What kept you from doing that immediately rather than letting her build up anxiety?
Melaina
I always tried to shelter my in laws.
Dr. Laura
That was stupid. That was stupid of you. Stupid of you to do that. You don't protect people who do damage and do evil. You don't protect them because they have a job description of they created your husband. That's just stupid. You created this anxiety in your daughter. You did that by not handling it at the moment or still I can't see any mother whitewashing that a bear is going to come. That somebody says a bear is going to come to eat them when you know it's not. And you let them be scared because you don't want to upset the person who told them that. That's not parenting. That's playing politics. So you're right. I would assume you made this call and Dan asked for your husband to come on because he did nothing. Is that correct? Just a yes or a no?
Melaina
Correct. He was not there.
Dr. Laura
Okay, so you married a weak man. I'm sorry. A lot of women do that because they don't want to have to struggle with somebody. I get that. So stop the stupidity of protecting them and sit your daughter down and say, I'm sorry I let you worry this long. Your grandmother was lying and being mean. She was mad that I didn't vote for the same person she voted for for president. So she said a lie and a mean thing and you're all upset because I didn't clear this up. I have been a citizen since I was 19. You're a citizen. We're all citizens. We're not going to be stopped. We can come back in. And you should be proud that people come from other countries legally and do things right and become good citizens. You should be proud of that. We're good citizens. And frankly, your grandmother's a bitch. See, I would say that. And never allow that woman in my house again.
Melaina
Yes. Yes. And I agree with you 100%. And I. For the love of my husband, I didn't do that because I am like you. I say it like it is, but I do.
Dr. Laura
Let me explain something to you. When you have people in your belly, once you have somebody in your belly, they are the priority. Not your husband, not your in laws. The well being of your child is number one. I don't care if you piss off your husband. Yeah, he deserves it. And I'm sure he's listening to this call now. Shame on him. To allow his mother to hurt his woman and his child. Shame on him. That's why he didn't want to. Come on. He didn't want to hear that to his ear. He's ashamed and he should be. And I'm sorry. He's a weak man. I hope he's nice in other regards.
Melaina
Yeah, he's not. He. This is the first time that I've ever seen weakness like this from him. But it's always around his parents. He's. He's. He's the alpha and everything else, but when it comes to his parents, he's just.
Dr. Laura
Well, you married a mama's boy. Mama's boys can be very strong in every department. Except with their mommy. And they will sacrifice their women and their children for their mommy.
Melaina
It's hard to hear, but it is the truth.
Dr. Laura
That's correct. So now you're in charge of protecting your kids. When you hang up, if your kid's in school, go pick up your kid, go for a drive and tell the kid the truth.
Melaina
I will.
Dr. Laura
I'm in Carlisle. And ashamed because your husband is weak and his mother is a bitch.
Melaina
Correct.
Dr. Laura
Okay.
Melaina
Thank you. Thank you for that. I needed it. Woman to woman. I needed to hear that.
Dr. Laura
Mother to mother.
Melaina
I needed to hear that.
Dr. Laura
Mother to mother.
Melaina
And Mother to mother.
Dr. Laura
Right.
Melaina
Thank you.
Dr. Laura
Exactly.
Melaina
Thank you.
Dr. Laura
Okay, sweetheart. Thank you. Melaina. All right, folks. You want to hear the truth? You want to hear it as it is so you can make better progress and have more joy and happiness in your life?
