Lucy
Hi Dr. Laura. Hi.
Dr. Laura
What can I help you with? I'm great. How can I help you?
Lucy
I'm just, I'm just so honored to be speaking to you. Honestly, I'm such a fan.
Dr. Laura
Thank you. Thank you.
Lucy
Well, I was 30 weeks pregnant in December and my husband got a DUI and I was just. I really haven't been able to navigate it to be honest, because I was so pregnant and I was just, I was just trying to survive at that point in time and now I have a four month old baby and I'm just, I can't Forgive. And I'm. I'm really trying to, but.
Dr. Laura
Well, let me understand more the particulars. Okay. Were you in the car when he got to dui? No.
Lucy
No.
Dr. Laura
Where was he going to or coming from?
Lucy
Yeah. So that was the other thing. He had said he had a work trip in San Francisco and he didn't.
Dr. Laura
What work does he do that he would make a trip to San Francisco.
Lucy
He travels a lot for work. He's in insurance, commercial insurance. So he has to go with a lot of clients to a lot of different locations and things like that. So it wasn't out of the ordinary. But he wasn't in San Francisco. He was in Cabo with work people on a golf trip. And it was on my.
Dr. Laura
I'm sorry. So he lied.
Lucy
He lied.
Dr. Laura
How come you didn't start with that?
Lucy
Yeah, I know.
Dr. Laura
Why were you hiding that?
Lucy
I wasn't.
Dr. Laura
Yeah, you were. That is the most huge thing you have here.
Lucy
I know.
Dr. Laura
Because that shows bizarre low character. A man who would do that so soon. How long while you're pregnant, you. Has it occurred to you that it's very possible you made a horrendous mistake in a husband?
Lucy
I don't know.
Dr. Laura
Don't play dumb just because you're postpartum.
Lucy
Yeah. So what am I supposed to do
Dr. Laura
right now? I think you should. Right now. I think you should. Lucy, you don't have a husband. You got married, but you don't have a husband.
Lucy
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
You know that.
Lucy
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
Yeah. My opinion, you pick up your kid and your facial products and you go home to your parents.
Lucy
Yeah.
Pacific Life Announcer
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
And at some point, you might go for a legal separation where he takes care of all the finances and we see if we can go from there. Now, how long did you date him? Just give me a number.
Lucy
We've been together 10 years.
Dr. Laura
And so that means you were 24. Okay. And in 10 years, you would not have predicted this behavior.
Lucy
I mean, there's been a truth.
Dr. Laura
This is a sh. Sh. This is a moment of truth.
Lucy
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
In 10 years, you would not have predicted this behavior by anything he did or said. Is that correct or wrong?
Lucy
No. I could see him doing this.
Dr. Laura
Okay. You made a terrible mistake. It frustrates me when women make mistakes about a husband and a father to their kids. That really frustrates me because you knew before you married him. Maybe I shouldn't do this. Go home to your parents. Tell them, you know, you made a mistake and you knew it. Tell them the whole truth from the beginning, all the things he's done. Tell your parents the whole truth, because you're going to need their help.
Lucy
Yeah,
Dr. Laura
And if he sends you flowers in a new car and a promise, I'm going to be totally different. You're going to be a fool to buy it. Yeah, but women with 4 month old kids tend to be foolish. One crunchy bite of a Hershey's cookies and cream bar and I'm taken right back to college. Move in. Day I was a little overwhelmed by the newness of it all. Boxes were everywhere. I needed a break from unpacking. But just as I was able to take a breath and open my Hershey's cookies and cream bar, my new roommate Rachel walked in. I offered her a piece, but she said no. Then after a beat, she said, actually, those are my favorite ones. We left, the ice was broken, and we've been friends ever since.

I don't even know how to navigate like a divorce or like my baby.
Dr. Laura
All I said was all I said. I didn't say the divorce word, did I?
Lucy
Hello?
Dr. Laura
This is how you navigate it. You call your mom, tell her you're coming home, Tell her everything that's happened. Pack up the kid and go get an attorney and file for a legal separation. That's not a divorce, okay? That just puts him on notice that you're not an idiot anymore.
Lucy
Okay?
Dr. Laura
That's it. That's what you do for now, okay? Don't think about a month, a year, a decade from now. Just take care of today's business. And I know it's embarrassing, but tell them the entire everything,
Lucy
Okay?
Dr. Laura
Because you need their help and your kid needs grandparents.
Lucy
I can't do it alone. I mean, I work full time. I mean, you shouldn't be working full
Dr. Laura
time with a four month old kid. What the hell, woman? Are you doing anything right?
Lucy
I don't know.
Dr. Laura
You seem to know. You knew he was a jerk and you knew you shouldn't work and you do everything you know wrong.
Lucy
Why? Why?
Dr. Laura
From woman to woman. Don't give me I don't know crap from woman to woman. Why are you not doing what you know to be right?
Lucy
I don't. I don't know. I want to have my own job, my own career, my own money. I don't know.
Dr. Laura
Well, have that without a baby that. That dick that isn't loved all day. Yeah, try getting all your own shit without the baby paying the price.
Lucy
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
Feminism gone amok.
Lucy
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
Kids not loved all day, P. Paid help. Is that what you would have wanted for yourself if you came back as a baby tomorrow? Would you want paid help so you're not loved all day? But that's what you did too, with this human being. You Went through nine months to produce. You sacrificed that kid's well being for your own personal gratification.
Lucy
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
It's about time you grow up. Tough up. Pick up the kid, call your parents, tell them the whole truth and quit your job now and take care of that child. It's going to be enough stress on this kid.
Lucy
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
Start doing the things you know to be right.
Lucy
Okay.
Dr. Laura
You have an argument against that?
Lucy
No.
Dr. Laura
It's a wake up call, isn't it?
Lucy
Yeah, it really is.
Dr. Laura
And when you get married, it isn't your own money, it's ours.
Lucy
Yeah,
Dr. Laura
but you've got a man who has no concern about supporting his family and you know it.
Lucy
Yeah. It's really discouraging, honestly.
Dr. Laura
Discouraging? You're the one who arranged this moment to happen.
Lucy
Yeah. Yeah.
Dr. Laura
That's how much power you have. You have the power to choose him to be your man and the father of your kid. You chose to let this man not support you and his kid. You had a baby with a guy you knew you couldn't trust.
Lucy
Yeah, I thought I did, but he was so honest.
Dr. Laura
Nonsense. You admitted a while ago that you wouldn't be. That you're not surprised based on historical behavior. So don't change the story. Call your mom. We need help.
Lucy
Okay.
Dr. Laura
How far do you live from your parents home?
Lucy
Like 15 minutes. Good.
Dr. Laura
Go. Yeah, but take stuff so you don't come in back. Take all the baby stuff.
Lucy
Yeah. Yeah.

Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Guest Caller: Lucy
This episode centers on a candid, emotional call between Dr. Laura and a listener, Lucy, who is struggling in the aftermath of her husband’s DUI, which occurred while she was pregnant. Lucy’s husband not only drank and drove but also lied about his whereabouts, leaving Lucy feeling betrayed and unable to forgive. Dr. Laura offers her signature tough love, directly questioning Lucy’s choices, pushing her to act decisively for her and her child’s welfare, and addressing the wider themes of trust, motherhood, self-reliance, and personal responsibility.
"Thank you for letting me yell at you." ([15:28])
Realization and “Wake-up Call" ([13:43]–[13:46])
Empowerment Through Responsibility
Direct, Blunt, Unvarnished: Dr. Laura does not mince words, repeatedly challenging Lucy to stop making excuses and confront the difficult reality for her child's sake.
Empathetic but Unyielding: Despite the stern delivery, Dr. Laura’s advice is rooted in concern for Lucy’s child and future.
This episode exemplifies Dr. Laura’s “no-nonsense” approach to relationship crises. She highlights the gravity of betrayal not just through bad acts (a DUI), but deceit (lying about whereabouts); urges Lucy to rely on family, not a dishonest spouse; and fiercely champions the child’s right to consistent, loving care. Dr. Laura rebukes excuses, presses for mature ownership of difficult truths, and provides concrete next steps: seek family support, pursue legal separation, and put the child’s needs before personal ambition.
Listeners are left with a clear and emphatic message on personal responsibility, the primacy of character in marriage, and the non-negotiable needs of a young child during family upheaval.
