How can I help? You're very welcome.
Caller
Oh, gosh. I will try not to cry. I cannot believe I'm actually talking to you. I've listened to you over the years for several different things and I just want you to know, so appreciate your wisdom and your guidance. So I'm just really honored and appreciative that I'm talking to you. But I have a. My mother is an incredible human being. She. I have two siblings that are disabled and one of them is profoundly disabled and living in a home and he has been there for over 40 years now. My mom is 77 and then I have a sister. They're both my older siblings. I have a sister who was diagnosed with a brain injury at 11, or, excuse me, a brain tumor at 11. So she has been dealing with that and dealing with ramifications of a tumor, losing her balance, losing her sight, losing her a lot over the years. And my mom has always been the staple of our family. She and my dad were Married for over 30 years and an incredible relationship. My dad, though, died about 25 years ago. So for about 25 years my mom has been again the staple of our family. I'm married, have two kids, have an awesome husband. We've always tried to be supportive of my mom. Long story short, my mom has moved closer to us, my sister has moved closer to us so that we can help them. But my brother is still about five hours away in the home where he's been for over 40 years with 24 hour care. He's non verbal, he's epileptic. So my mom, in the, in the last five years or so, really in the last three years, it's gotten the worst where she has just been beside herself with grief and sadness. And it's all been spearheaded by this anger that she has. This home has been rebought and rebought several times and is not being run by people that she thinks have his best interest in mind. She's in this constant advocate role and her health is declining. And it seems that there is nothing I can say that helps her relax or helped her in the bigger picture.

You see how powerful inappropriate guilt can be?
Caller
What does she do with that?
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Oh, honey, I'm not talking to your mother, I'm talking to you. I'm trying to explain to you. It sounds to me like ferocious amount of guilt as she is at the last part of her life. She couldn't fix her boy, she couldn't raise her boy, she had another kid with problems and she's so happy that you're squared away, she doesn't have to pay attention to you. That's what happens, right?

Because you got a good husband, got a good family, you're healthy, your life is good. She doesn't have to spend a moment thinking of you. She's overwhelmed by guilt for the other two. So you're right, you can't. But you can go over a house and take her to dinner sometimes. You can go over a house and cook dinner. You can take her out for lunch sometimes you can just do these things. But it's sort of you being the parent. She can't be your parent now. She's occupied. And you don't need her in the way she perceives her other kids need her. So the best you can do now, which would be wonderful, is to several times a month you and your husband take her out to a movie, to a nice park with a picnic. Just do some things like that. Don't expect her to do any of that for herself. She's too guilt ridden,
Caller
right? So just let it be and let her work through it. She has moments where she I never
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
said let her work through it. I never said let it be. I thought I did a brilliant I thought I did actually a brilliant explanation of what's going on. And then I recommended what you could do to make her life better. And I commented as to why you shouldn't expect her to drop all of that and Be good to herself and good for you that none of that is going to happen. But I gave you a direction and then you just go back to the beginning and you imply that I said just let it go and let her figure it out herself. She's never figuring it out herself. This is her life.
Caller
Right.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
So we need you to be more gracious and magnanimous and take her out for some pleasant little forays. Okay?
Caller
Okay. Okay. Thank you, Dr. Laura.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
You're welcome. So let her figure it out on her own. Did I say that? Leave it all alone. Did I say that? I know it's hard to hear that your mother can't be there for you anymore in any significant way. But somehow we have to have the maturity at some point in our lives to realize the apparent is not just simply there for you, that things happen to parents. That's when they need our understanding. And to be more giving than demanding of getting and taking care of ourself is code for being more available to me. My number, 1-800-375-2872.
