Bill
Yes, hi Dr. Laura. Thanks for taking my call. Longtime listeners. I currently live in Florida, recently retired about two years ago and married 40 years.
Dr. Laura
Why did you recently retire? Two years ago?
Bill
I am 67.
Dr. Laura
I'm 78. I'm 78 in a week.
Bill
Well, I have saved up enough money where I don't need to work. I have made a very comfortable wealth.
Dr. Laura
Can you hear me? I like going back and forth. Okay, so when you hear me saying something, just listen for a second. Then you can respond to it. You only worked for the money.
Bill
I worked for enjoyment. I liked what I did.
Dr. Laura
Then why'd you give it up? Why did you give it up?
Bill
It was a time I felt like I was getting burnt out.
Dr. Laura
You want to go back to it?
Bill
I thought about it, but I don't need the money. I have.
Dr. Laura
We're not talking about money. Why do you keep going back to money? That's not why we work.
Bill
Yes, but I don't want to work my entire life. I want to enjoy my fruits of the labor.
Dr. Laura
Well, you're not. You have money and you have time and you're not enjoying it, which is why you're on the phone. So that thinking was misplaced.
Bill
Well, I would like to travel, but my wife is a homebody and doesn't get out of the house as much as I would like.
Dr. Laura
Then travel by yourself or with a couple of guys. I'll have to suggest that no, you don't suggest that. You inform her that you're going to be traveling hither and thither. If she'd like to join you, great. If not, you go by yourself or with some guys because you want to travel at this time in your life. She doesn't get to decide that for you. She doesn't get to decide that for you.
Bill
All right, I understand now. I have to do what I want to do.
Dr. Laura
She's doing what she wants to do it, and she does.
Bill
Correct. And she's controlling.
Dr. Laura
No, you've been weak.
Bill
Okay, I can understand.
Dr. Laura
Gun to your head. I. I accept control. Other than a gun to your head. No, there's no controlling you.
Bill
Okay. So then when I sort of challenge her, she tells me, I get nasty.
Dr. Laura
You don't challenge her. I don't know why you would think of challenging her. That's the life she enjoys. Let her live it. It's not the life you enjoy. Live the one you enjoy. And if you want to travel now and then go for it. Inform her, not challenge her. These two weeks in May, I'm going to be traveling. Would you like to come? No. Well, you know, I'll miss you.

Bill
All right, that's what I have to do.
Dr. Laura
Remember, nobody's controlling you.
Bill
I understand.
Dr. Laura
Nobody. Nobody. Nobody is controlling you. People like to blame their lack of backbone to do things by their being controlled to not do them. And no you're not. If somebody's not happy with it, if somebody is unkind because of it, that's not controlling. That's their response. Doesn't stop you from having your own desires and activities. And if something becomes abusive, then you have to rethink your situation. I have a long history with this person, but I refuse to be abused. Between now and dead is not as long as between birth and now. So I want to take advantage of the fact that I'm alive. The person who is saying no is doing what they want. Let them. My number of 1-800-375-2872 and this bit about I'm retiring because I don't need the money. Is that the only reason you work? No, I really enjoyed it. Well then the money was not the only reason you worked. But I want to do other things now, but my wife won't let me. So, you know, you. You paint yourself in a corner. Work is also for challenge and some kind of work. I mean, one can stop doing the work one has been doing and pick up some other kind of work because it makes one's life feel purposeful. I never understood if you're going to retire at 65 and you live to 85, what the hell are you going to do with 20 years? Seriously, my number. Dr. Laura Call of the Day: "My Wife is Controlling My Retirement"
Release Date: March 9, 2025
In this episode of "Dr. Laura Call of the Day," host Dr. Laura Schlessinger addresses a caller named Bill, who seeks advice on challenges he's facing in his retirement. The discussion delves into themes of personal responsibility, marital dynamics, and the pursuit of personal fulfillment during retirement.
Bill's Background:
Primary Concern: Bill expresses dissatisfaction with his retirement life, feeling constrained by his wife's reluctance to engage in activities he desires, such as traveling. He perceives his wife as controlling, limiting his ability to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Understanding the Root Cause: Dr. Laura begins by probing the motivations behind Bill's retirement. She distinguishes between working for financial necessity versus working for enjoyment, highlighting the importance of understanding one's true motivations.
Identifying the Misalignment: Despite having the financial means, Bill's inability to enjoy his retirement activities stems from marital discord. Dr. Laura challenges Bill's focus on money as the primary reason for his work, suggesting that deeper personal fulfillment issues are at play.
Encouraging Personal Autonomy: Dr. Laura emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility and autonomy within a marriage. She advises Bill to pursue his interests independently if his wife is unwilling to participate, reinforcing that his happiness should not be solely dependent on his spouse's choices.
Addressing Perceived Control: When Bill labels his wife as controlling, Dr. Laura counters by attributing his feelings to his own perceived weaknesses rather than actual control.
Promoting Self-Determination: Dr. Laura reinforces that Bill is not being controlled but is instead choosing to live his life as he desires. She challenges him to take back control of his life by pursuing his interests without feeling guilty or restrained by his wife's preferences.
Personal Responsibility:
The episode underscores the significance of taking personal responsibility for one's happiness and not attributing dissatisfaction solely to external factors or other individuals.
Autonomy in Marriage:
Dr. Laura advocates for maintaining personal autonomy within marital relationships, suggesting that mutual respect for individual interests is crucial for long-term harmony.
Pursuit of Fulfillment:
Retirement presents an opportunity for individuals to explore personal passions and interests. Dr. Laura encourages listeners to actively seek fulfillment and not let complacency or perceived constraints hinder their enjoyment of life post-retirement.
Dr. Laura (02:36): "We're not talking about money. Why do you keep going back to money? That's not why we work."
Dr. Laura (03:05): "Then travel by yourself or with a couple of guys."
Dr. Laura (03:50): "No, you've been weak."
Dr. Laura (08:03): "Nobody. Nobody. Nobody is controlling you. People like to blame their lack of backbone to do things by their being controlled to not do them."
In "My Wife is Controlling My Retirement," Dr. Laura Schlessinger provides insightful guidance to Bill, encouraging him to reclaim his autonomy and pursue personal fulfillment independent of his wife's preferences. The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of personal responsibility and the need to actively shape one's own happiness, especially during significant life transitions like retirement.
