Hi Dr. Laura. Thank you for having me.

You're very welcome. How can I help today?

I am just looking for your advice on whether I should address my husband's behavior or if I should just let it roll off my back. So I'll give you a little background. We've been married about a year and a half and we have a seven month old baby. So it's a big lifestyle change. And I had a conversation with him about three weeks back on how I needed more help around the house and just that I wanted to spend more time on him. And if he could just, you know, I didn't think he was doing it on purpose, but if he could better prioritize his time and he took that. But it's, he's definitely helping more. So he's doing everything that I asked, but he, his mood is just not very friendly, doesn't really want to engage.
Dr. Laura
It just seems like I have two dogs. One is well trained, the other I'm working on because he's going to be a big, very high energy dog. And there are two sets of ways I have him do things. Sit down, stand, twirl, twirl, and so forth. Sometimes just I do it all of a sudden and I give him. When he finishes, I'm hugging him and kissing him and rubbing him and going, oh, you're such a good boy to do that.
Caller
You're such a good boy.
Dr. Laura
And that is one enthusiastic frickin dog. Other times I just give him this little treat and I go, good job, good job. You know how they do. Good job, good job. Both ways. He gets a reaction of not only approval and appreciation, but acknowledgement. So I think you did very great explaining in a gracious way that you'd like to spend more time on your husband and you could do that if he would help. I need you to treat him like I treat Bear. When he does stuff, I want you all over him thanking him because he already did his part. He went to work, you're home with the kid. You did your part. If you'd like him to start doing part of your part after he spent a whole day at work, you need to slobber him with affection and approval and appreciation and you will not see a mood. You will not see a mood. You jump on him and with your legs wrapped around his waist and you nibble on his ear and go, that was great. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Guy is going to look for things to do and not have a mood. So do with your husband like I do with my puppy and I think you'll get great return. I do.

To realize the future America needs, we understand what's needed from us to face each threat head on. We've earned our place in the fight for our nation's future. We are Marines. We were made for this.

Got it. I can definitely do that. I have. I have little cards that say grateful for, and I got them made. And I write him little notes of things that I'm grateful for that he does, and I leave it on his desk.
Dr. Laura
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You gotta jump him, hug him, grab him in the Netherland. You've got to do things that really register with him. And little notes that are typical don't register, throw those in the trash.
Caller
Got it. All right.
Dr. Laura
Physical, baby, physical.
Caller
All right.

Episode: No Excuses: Why Men Need the "Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" From You!
Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Date: March 31, 2026
This episode centers on a caller's marital dilemma, focusing on how wives can positively impact their relationships by providing husbands with affection and appreciation. Dr. Laura draws a parallel between positive reinforcement in training a dog and nurturing a husband's helpful behavior, advocating for enthusiastic, physical displays of gratitude over routine, impersonal gestures.
Dr. Laura’s language is direct, playful, and sometimes provocative, blending humor with no-nonsense, actionable advice. She swings from relatable storytelling to blunt imperatives designed to jolt listeners into rethinking how they engage with their spouses.
