Caller Jennifer
Hi, Dr. Laura.
Dr. Laura
Hi. What's happening?
Caller Jennifer
Okay, thank you for taking my call today. First of all, and so I am a cycle breaker. I come from a very long line of family dysfunction. My mother's mom raised me from the age of nine up until she passed away when I was 27. I was also a young mother at the age of 19. And there's a lot of difficult challenges that I had to take on. And one of the difficult challenges I could take on was cutting off my biological parents. Now, even though I was raised by my grandmother, I still had contact with my biological parents. It was my mother's mom who raised me. My little brother, who is seven years younger than me, stayed in that home. And long story short, nine years ago, my biological father passed away. I was able to reconnect prior to him passing away and I kind of went silent after that. And I now my mother is passing away of ovarian cancer and I want to be close to my brother. I want to get to know him. I want him to get to know me. I don't know if that comes with age.
Dr. Laura
I've heard all your wants. What does it seem he wants?
Caller Jennifer
I tried reaching out to him and no response. I had genetic testing done.
Dr. Laura
When what is plan B? If your brother does not want to make him well? That's what I'm asking. If your brother doesn't wish, doesn't feel a need, doesn't want to make a relationship, then what are you going to do? Maybe friends, maybe other activities. What are you going to fill that with?
Caller Jennifer
Navigating. That has been easy. I fill my days, you know, with my husband, and I have friends, but the version of my. The version of me as a scapegoat. My mother just hates me, and I don't know why. And I'm in therapy because of that. And we kind of narrow.
Dr. Laura
How do you know your mother hates you? Where does that come from?
Caller Jennifer
She's. She's told me she's hated me. Like, she wishes I was never born. She said, oh, and she did say that you are not my mother's child. I am her child. And I think we think, as with my therapist, that she kind of resents me from that relationship that I've had with her mom because her mom raised me, and she wishes that she had that same relationship with my grandmother, and she didn't have that. And I'm. I hate it. I feel like I've been apologizing for that my whole life. You know, I'm sorry. I have physically told her I am sorry, like, but it's not my fault. And I'm not sorry because I've been raised to be who I am today because of her, you know? And yes, I. I can't say I'm sorry. I. I just have to re. I have to. I have to basically reiterate that. Like, I'm not sorry for that. But Trent thinks I'm. I'm somebody completely different than what I am. And I gave him genetic testing that I just had recently done. And I reached out to his wife and I told her that my. My. My phone is always open for communication, and my therapist had told me that I should re. Reach out. And I feel like I'm overstepping boundaries because I feel like I opened that door for him and he didn't take it.
Dr. Laura
That's correct. Don't harass them.
Caller Jennifer
Right.
Dr. Laura
He went a different path.
Caller Jennifer
Yeah. Yeah.
Dr. Laura
And just because people have half their genes in common doesn't mean they're fated to join in life.
Caller Jennifer
Okay. Thank you.

One crunchy bite of a Hershey's cookies and cream bar and I'm taken right back to college.
Caller Jennifer
Move in.
Dr. Laura
Day I was a little overwhelmed by the newness of it all. Boxes were everywhere. I needed a break from unpacking. But just as I was able to take a breath and open my Hershey's cookies and cream bar, my new roommate Rachel walked in. I offered her a piece, but she said no. Then after a beat, she said, actually, those are my favorite ones. We left, the ice was broken and we've been friends ever since. Hershey's. It's your happy place.

And another question if you have time. I have this wound even though I was raised by an incredible woman who, goodness gracious, who has helped make me who I am today. Who's a woven her belief and how gentle the gentle parenting that she did. I. I couldn't be more grateful for the woman who raised me. Is it normal to constantly want something with a biological parent that I've never had but I yearn to be close to her and I want her to

reach out to Jennifer. Jennifer. Statistically speaking, in terms of a population, it's not unusual. Everybody wants to be loved by their mommy and daddy. But in your case, it's become neurotic.
Caller Jennifer
Yeah,
Dr. Laura
I mean I have all kinds of scars from surgeries and injuries all over my body. You know, athletic, whatever. I live not going over them and wishing they weren't there and wishing my skin over there looked perfect. You've got to stop doing it. You have to stop looking at yesterday. You have to stop. It's not a healthy way to live. No, we can't fix yesterday. You can't have that with a woman who's not capable of it. That's where it gets to be neurotic. You can't have it with a person who's not capable or willing of it. And for you to think you're just not going to give up in your heart, your mind, your actions is neurotic. It is to live in yesterday and not today. And you've built a life that I wish you were more proud of. You sound very proud of your grandmother, but you don't sound that way about yourself. You have done miracles. But it's like once you jump off the diving board. Stop looking at the diving board, okay? It's over. That whole thing is over. And you made it out quite well, And it's over. There's no more you have to do or ought to do about yesterday.
Caller Jennifer
Okay?
Dr. Laura
Right now you got to focus on being a good wife, a good granddaughter, a good friend, a good whatever the hell it is you do for your hobbies.
Caller Jennifer
Yes.
Dr. Laura
That's. I mean, I'm sorry that you go to therapy and still discuss yesterday. Yeah, I see that as a waste of money.
Caller Jennifer
Yes.
Dr. Laura
And undermining of your emotional well being. I'd like to get you past the crying.
Caller Jennifer
Okay.
Dr. Laura
That I wish that were your goal now.
Caller Jennifer
Yes. You just solidified everything that I felt.
Dr. Laura
Oh, Good.
Caller Jennifer
Thank you, Dr. Laura. I appreciate you.

“You go to therapy and still discuss yesterday. Yeah, I see that as a waste of money and undermining of your emotional well-being.” — Dr. Laura ([10:46–11:09])
