Caller (Husband)
Hello hi,
Dr. Laura
how can I help you?
Caller (Husband)
I'm calling in because my wife unfortunately her stepfather had passed away from terminally brain cancer and during this whole process which happened less than a year ago, he recently just passed the the mom left him, abandoned him essentially and start seeing another man that we found out to our shock and we cut her off and it's caused a lot of problems cutting her off. I feel like my wife, she lost her whole family overnight almost and so now I'm just wondering what to do how to handle these people and how to help my wife because she just kind of freezes. She's already confronte everybody many many times and they kind of won't stop.
Dr. Laura
They just keep I'm sorry everybody sounds like it's 40 people. Name the people.
Caller (Husband)
Sorry it is the grandmother, the grandfather, the aunts, the uncles, and that's it. Okay.
Dr. Laura
That's not everybody
Caller (Husband)
on her side. It is for her, not my side,
Dr. Laura
but yeah, everybody else is dead. Yes, that's it. She got no other relatives, no cousins, nothing. Siblings?
Caller (Husband)
Yeah, she has younger. Younger cousins. She has younger cousins, but she's never knew her father, which kind of plays into this. So she was raised by the grandparents and the mom.
Dr. Laura
Okay. So the grandparents are standing by the mother who abandoned somebody, dying to have a new stud. Okay. How strong is your wife?
Caller (Husband)
How strong you said?
Dr. Laura
Yeah.
Caller (Husband)
With this kind of thing, I don't know. Her family's always been the close family. You know, if anything is myself really something like this would happen.
Dr. Laura
Yeah, Close family.
Caller (Husband)
Super close. I mean, I am when I say I'm shocked by this. I, I, I'm, I usually see something coming and I'm, we're just blown away. I mean, completely shocked.
Dr. Laura
Okay.
Caller (Husband)
And we're even more shocked by the
Dr. Laura
response of four people.
Caller (Husband)
Yep. Essentially. Yeah. Essentially, yeah.
Dr. Laura
Okay, so the grandparents are your wife's mother's parents, right?
Caller (Husband)
Correct.
Dr. Laura
So very simple. They're defending their daughter even if she's a disgusting twit. In this very close, loving family. Okay, the aunt and uncle, how are they related to your wife's mother?
Caller (Husband)
Their brother and sister.
Dr. Laura
Okay, need to understand, this is like an incest festival. And I see this when there's a rape. I mean, mommy could have raped her son and this is what's going to happen. I don't want to have anything to do with my mother. Look what she did. Oh, but she's your mother. This is insanity and you're full of it. If you thought this was a healthy, close family, in no way. I'd love to sit with everybody and prove it to you. However, we can't do that and we don't have time for that. So you have to play this for your wife. She did the right thing. It was inhumane, narcissistic and disgusting. What? Her mother did that incestuously. The brother, sister and the mother are standing by. This woman should alleviate your wife of any notion that it has any meaning.

Caller (Husband)
Yeah, I agree.
Dr. Laura
And I think the so I'm gonna give you this tape and you're gonna play it for your wife.
Caller (Husband)
Okay.
Dr. Laura
And don't keep on this thing. This was a very close family. This was a phony Close family. This was foe closeness. This was. You do how we perceive things should be. And we're close.
Caller (Husband)
Right. And. And we have four children. And. And that. That kind of played an issue into it too. We're wondering if we did the right. We know we did the right thing. We know we did. We're just wondering.
Livvy Dunn
Yes.
Dr. Laura
I was very upset that you were going to challenge whether you did the right thing. Your kids have to know that when people do something disgusting and then defend it. Hit the road, Jack. No matter who they are.
Caller (Husband)
What do we say when. Now there's like nobody showing up to the birthday party and that kind of thing. I mean, I know the bigger important thing is don't let these people around.
Dr. Laura
I'm sorry. Do your kids actually have friends?
Caller (Husband)
Yes. Yes.
Dr. Laura
I never cared about relatives. When I was a little kid at a birthday party, I wanted friends and presents and a cake.
Caller (Husband)
Right.
Dr. Laura
And games to play. So cut it out. That's your fantasy. Kids don't fantasize about that.
Caller (Husband)
I agree.
Dr. Laura
And if they're double digit in age, tell them the truth.
Caller (Husband)
So should I, you know, she doesn't want to speak to them basically anymore. Should I step in? Should I say something to them?
Dr. Laura
Is there anything that I said that led you to believe that they should be spoken to at all about anything and that it would make a difference? When I ranted on about an incestuous situation of evil, did you think you were going to talk them out of that?
Caller (Husband)
No.
Dr. Laura
Just checking.
Caller (Husband)
Oh, boy. All right,
Dr. Laura
I'm going to put you on hold. I'd like you to play this recording for your wife if you're willing. She is willing. Okay, I'm going to put you on hold.

This episode centers on an emotional and complicated family dilemma: Jude’s wife is coping with the recent death of her stepfather from brain cancer and the distressing discovery that her mother left her dying husband, began a relationship with another man, and was supported by extended family members. Jude calls Dr. Laura seeking advice on whether he should intervene with the family and how to best support his wife and children, now estranged from maternal relatives.
Dr. Laura provides uncompromising, clear-eyed counsel that the family’s “closeness” was a façade, denounces the family’s behavior as toxic, and offers advice for maintaining healthy boundaries to protect Jude’s wife and children.
Situation Recap (02:05–03:37):
Dr. Laura Challenges the “Close Family” Narrative (03:37–05:30):
Calling Out Dysfunction (04:56–06:06):
Quote:
Concerns About Social Isolation for Kids (09:09–09:54):
Honesty with Children (10:04–10:11):
Jude asks if he should confront the family. Dr. Laura is unequivocal:
Quote:
Her advice: Continuing to engage will not change their behavior, and keeping the boundary is the healthiest option.
On “Closeness” and Enabling Toxicity:
On Drawing Boundaries:
On Accepting Family Loss:
Dr. Laura’s message in this episode is clear and direct: true family is revealed in difficult moments, and “closeness” that excuses harmful behavior is a façade. She tells Jude to reinforce boundaries, reassure his wife that cutting off her toxic relatives was the right choice, and focus on their children’s needs—friends, honesty, and a healthy home matter more than extended family appearances. There is no merit in reaching out to family members who have repeatedly chosen loyalty to dysfunction over decency.
Essential takeaway:
“Your first responsibility is to your wife and kids. Removing yourselves from toxic relatives is painful but right. Don’t second-guess your boundaries, and don’t let misplaced nostalgia or guilt undermine the safety and wellbeing of your immediate family.”
