Hi Dr. Laura.
A
Hi, what's up?
B
Well, my friend, thank you for taking my call. My question for you is whether or not I should go stay with my brother out of state this weekend as planned, despite our continued contention that we just had another problem over the weekend.
A
Well, tell me what the other problem is and what some of the other other problems have been that get contentious. Fill me in?
B
Certainly. So Saturday late night come to find my brother called me twice after midnight despite my phone being on do not Disturb because apparently when a select list of contacts rings you within a couple minutes, it sends the call through, you know, in case of an emergency. And so it woke me up. I was just about to drift off to sleep despite some back pain I've been experiencing and he woke me up and I wasn't able to fall asleep for a few hours after that. So it was frustrating. But the next morning I just Gave him a call and said good morning and spoke to him. But one of the first things I said is, I have a respectful directive for you. Do not call me after midnight unless there's an emergency. Right. Instead of responding accordingly and respectfully in kind, the first thing out of his mouth was, oh, well, what's up your ass?
A
Oh, what did he call you for? Did he at that point tell you?
B
No, he. There was no emergency that was. That was clear. You know, there was no calls or voicemails the night before. He just called to talk and. But he didn't tell me what it was because, you know, that was the first thing out of his mouth. So I responded. I said, you know what? I'm not surprised. That's how you responded to my. My respectful directive to you that, of course it's all about him and he can never do anything wrong. And, you know, it's all my problem. It's all my fault that he decided to call me after midnight.
A
Well, Justin, I realize siblings often yearn to get along with their siblings, but if he's a very difficult person, you might want to minimize spending weekends with him. If this is how it goes, what's the point? I mean, what would be the point? So you can still talk to him now and then see him at events, but to spend precious time if he's very difficult to be with and he's not very thoughtful and kind of. I don't spend weekends with people I don't think are thoughtful and kind. I don't care who they are. Weekends are sacred.
B
Yes. Yes, that's. That's exactly the struggle, because, you know, that was the plan.
A
Why is it a struggle?
B
Because he's. He's, you know, my brother and whatnot. But it's. That's what the struggle is. The decision on. On, you know, do I go there and.
A
Truthfully, I don't understand why it's a struggle. Because your desire cannot be met. You have more than three decades to prove that. As people age, it's normal to ask what more they could be doing to take care of their health. It's important to be proactive, especially when it comes to your brain. Health. Health. Don't wait for something to feel off before taking action. Make your next checkup count. Ask your doctor about your risk factors for dementia and a cognitive assessment. It's more of a recent development with his behavior, but I agree with you.
A
Oh, because you said it wasn't a surprise. Okay, Harry. Since two weeks,
B
Maybe about the last. Just this year, Just this six months or so.

Ah, well, forgive me for taking a leap of stupidity and thinking this was consistent. Then you need to talk to him in advance and say, you know, I'm actually having second thoughts about coming. You're my brother, I love you. We've had a very good relationship, but lately you've been thoughtless and I'd like to know that this is important to you to resume how we used to be, caring about each other and thoughtful. So let's talk about this before I make the trip. Yeah, and you're right. I should have asked initially how long this was going on. My bad. But that's how I think you ought to handle it at this point. Episode: Should I Stay With My Brother This Weekend?
Air Date: June 19, 2026
Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Guest/Caller: Justin
This episode centers on a listener named Justin, who seeks Dr. Laura's advice on whether he should follow through with plans to visit his brother for a weekend after a series of contentious incidents. The discussion explores the complexities of sibling dynamics, boundaries, and the importance of self-respect and honest communication.
Justin’s Dilemma (01:49)
Justin explains the main issue: his brother recently disrupted his sleep by calling after midnight (despite Justin’s phone being set to "Do Not Disturb"), and then reacted combatively when Justin requested not to be called late unless there was an emergency.
Lack of Respect & Consideration
Dr. Laura highlights the underlying problem: the brother’s lack of thoughtfulness and respect for Justin’s boundaries.
Emotional Struggle vs. Rational Choice
Justin feels conflicted about canceling on his brother due to their familial bond.
Dr. Laura’s Direct Approach
She challenges the notion that familial ties should override self-respect and emotional well-being.
Justin, on failed boundaries:
“...it woke me up. I wasn't able to fall asleep for a few hours. The next morning I just gave him a call...I have a respectful directive for you. Do not call me after midnight unless there's an emergency. Right. Instead...the first thing out of his mouth was, 'Oh, well, what's up your ass?'” (02:18–03:19)
Dr. Laura, on family and self-respect:
“If he's a very difficult person, you might want to minimize spending weekends with him. If this is how it goes, what's the point? ...Weekends are sacred.” (03:59–04:47)
Dr. Laura, on recognizing patterns:
“You have three decades to indicate the weekend won't be fun. There's no struggle.” (08:15)
Dr. Laura, changing course with new information:
“...forgive me for taking a leap of stupidity and thinking this was consistent. Then you need to talk to him in advance...” (08:47)
Dr. Laura’s core advice in this episode centers around the importance of boundaries, self-respect, and direct communication, even with family. Justin is encouraged to honestly address recent changes with his brother before making further commitments, rather than enduring discomfort out of obligation.
The episode is a concise but insightful exploration of practical relationship boundaries and the sometimes necessary honesty required even in close family bonds.
