right, today I'm going to be talking about signs which indicate you are, yes, indeed, ready to get married. So even if the wedding's tomorrow, you better listen up to this list. If this doesn't fly for you, Don't show up unless there are special clothes for a divorce. Like there are special clothes for a marriage. Okay, first sign you are really, really, really, really ready to get married is you really want to marry him. Her. But first, you really want to be married. You really want to be a married person. Not because your family is nagging you to get married. Not because your friends are nagging you to get married. Not because you don't want to look like a flub in society. Not because the person who wants to marry you nags you. Independent from all of that, you have to really simply want to get married. That's an idea that somehow doesn't cross people's heads often enough. I don't know. I got married. I mean, yesterday we had one of the most remarkable calls. It ended well. Young woman married a guy in three months of knowing him because he said he was dying. Her plan was to go to med school. She threw it all away to marry this guy she didn't know because he said he was dying. Turns out he was not dying and he was gay. I was a little flabbergasted. When somebody's actually thinking about medical school. I mean, the burden and the challenge of that is probably one of the most phenomenal that there is anywhere on the planet. To toss that precipitously for a silly situation, no how to be something else. I pushed for a while and then she was willing to open up and basically her mother was pressuring her to go to med school. She didn't want to go and fail. She didn't want to be ultimately responsible life and death. She didn't want to do it. She couldn't stand up to her mother. So she married this guy she knew three months because he said he was dying. And that was the best excuse for not going to med school. She's since divorced and finishing up nursing program, which is what she wanted to do in the first place. So when I say don't get married unless you really want to get married, please, that's an awful big step to take just to tell your mother to pound sand. Okay, next, you have to really believe that he or she is the one. And the reason you believe he or she is the one, because in the two years of dating, two years of dating, you've gone through just about every up and down people can go through and you survived it together. Don't enter into a marriage with somebody whose behavior in the two years you're getting to know them is negative, negative, negative. But you think somehow a cummerbund or a pretty dress is going to change who they are. The best predictor of how a person is going to be in marriage is how they were before. You need to understand also what a commitment is, which is shack ups. Don't even consider this. You need to know what a commitment is. And again, that goes back to. You've spent two years being able to negotiate with each other through every up and down that could happen in two years. Being able to talk about things, weathering storms together, because then you know that this is forever.

If you're still eager and happy to commit to somebody after weathering storms, this is good. Eager. Eager is different from defeated. And oh well, I might as well. That's not eager. Okay? Eager is I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with a person I can handle life with so well. That's eager. And one of the parts of handling life so well is you can disagree about things and come out the other end without anybody's feelings being decimated. A lot of you think the only good relationship is one in which you're always right. Don't do that. You have to be able to talk about anything and everything without feeling fear that the other person is going to leave you, fear that they're going to verbally or physically beat you to death. You've got to be able to actually listen without getting crazy. This has to be the one person in the universe that you can be

the most honest with.

Because what's the point of somebody saying they love you and you feeling loved, but you don't, because you haven't been genuine with them. So if they don't really know what you think and feel and you've played this game, and then when they say they love you, they don't love you because they don't know you yet, because you haven't revealed yourself. So what the hell is that for? If you really want to be loved, you have to show who you are and risk rejection. And the alternative, which is somebody accepts you and loves you, So you've got to be honest so that you have mutual trust. You have to have the same basically. Basically the same morals, values, principles and ethics or you'll be like sandpaper against each other. Your values have to be similar and your lifelong goals need to be similar. Like, do we have kids? If so, a ton of them. Some of them, none of them. I mean, we can't guess the future. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don't. You can always adopt. So you need to talk about all things like that before you get married. And basically you have to spend two years seeing that you're willing and he or she is willing to go way out of their way to make you happy. None of that 60s. You're responsible for your own happiness. No, somebody treating you beautifully makes you very happy. Unless you've got so many neurotic things going on inside of you you can't absorb joy. But that's a whole other issue. I'm talking about relatively healthy people, okay? When you say marriage, it's for bitter and worse. So sometimes it's not great. And you have to be able to overcome those moments. You have to be able to talk about one of the things that people don't talk about. You know, they'll talk about sex before they talk about money. All the money issues need to be discussed. Who's going to earn? Who's going to spend? Who's going to take this? Who's going to do that? Where's the money going? No, what are your debts? How do you spend? How do you save? That's why I think people should have six to nine months of premarital counseling with a therapist whose expertise is specifically premarital counseling. I remember doing that for a while. Very instructive. About 80% or more of the time, the therapist could make a determination whether or not this marriage was going to work and be correct. That means 20% of the time it worked anyway. My number, 1-800-375-2872.

Episode Title: Signs You're Ready for Marriage
This episode of The Dr. Laura Podcast is devoted to an in-depth exploration of what it truly means to be ready for marriage. Dr. Laura Schlessinger, drawing on decades of practical wisdom and real-life examples, outlines the crucial self-reflection and relationship milestones that signal genuine marital readiness. With her signature candor and wit, Dr. Laura shares vivid anecdotes, practical lists, and actionable advice to help listeners distinguish between external pressures and true personal commitment.
Dr. Laura emphasizes: You must independently want to be married, not just appease family, friends, or societal expectations.
Notable anecdote: A caller married someone hastily to avoid medical school pressures—highlighting the danger of making life decisions based on external motivation.
“Don’t get married unless you really want to get married. Please, that’s an awful big step to take just to tell your mother to pound sand.”
— Dr. Laura (04:32)
Genuine belief in your partner’s suitability should come from at least two years of dating, experiencing life’s ups and downs together.
Dr. Laura warns against ignoring bad pre-marital behavior, hoping marriage will magically fix it.
“The best predictor of how a person is going to be in marriage is how they were before.”
— Dr. Laura (05:46)
Readiness for marriage is marked by eagerness, not a sense of defeat or fatalism.
The distinction between “eager” and “might as well” is crucial.
“Eager is I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with a person I can handle life with so well… that’s eager.”
— Dr. Laura (10:10)
Couples must be able to disagree and resolve issues without decimating each other’s feelings.
Honest self-disclosure is essential—your partner must truly know you for love to be real.
“If you really want to be loved, you have to show who you are and risk rejection. And the alternative, which is somebody accepts you and loves you.”
— Dr. Laura (11:30)
Both partners must consistently demonstrate willingness to sacrifice and strive for each other's happiness.
“When you say marriage, it’s for better and worse. So sometimes it’s not great. And you have to be able to overcome those moments.”
— Dr. Laura (13:28)
Dr. Laura recommends six to nine months of premarital counseling with an expert.
The majority of therapists can accurately assess marriage viability during this process.
“About 80% or more of the time, the therapist could make a determination whether or not this marriage was going to work and be correct.”
— Dr. Laura (14:08)
“That was the best excuse for not going to med school. She's since divorced and finishing up nursing program, which is what she wanted to do in the first place.”
— Dr. Laura (03:08)
