Hi, Dr. Laura.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Hi. What's on your mind?
Caller Tracy
I'm a longtime listener. I'm a longtime listener. I respect you immensely. I appreciate you taking my call today. My call is centered around developing friendships. I'm 60 years old and I will be 61 on July 4th. Actually. I have a very healthy marriage. We've been married since 1991. My husband is about four years older than me and we recently became empty nesters. We have two wonderful children, one 32, which is a son and my daughter is 23. They're doing very well, successfully in their own careers.
Angie Hicks
Good.
Caller Tracy
And have moved out of the home. I have had alcohol problem but have been sober since 2014. Sobriety is really is first in my life. You know, my family and you know, my religion obviously is up there as well. But I, during the time period that I was healing, I sort of isolated myself. And then that was compounded with COVID and all of the other things. I'm a white collar professional. I work from home. So I don't go into the office very often. Office happens to be in California. I live in Virginia. I guess my question to you is it's probably not very typical for a 60 year old not to have many friends. And I guess I just am asking the question, is it necessary or is it something that really sort of rounds out my well being to have some close friends that I can count on if I should? I need that.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
All the research indicates that we are more mentally healthy. The quality of our Life is immensely improved and it even points to some longevity points. So, yeah, friends are very important.
Caller Tracy
The few attempts that I have made to sort of.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger (Podcast Host)
I don't want to hear the few
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
attempts I've made haven't worked. I don't care. Figure out why they didn't work. Figure it out. Learn something from it. Make more of an effort to be a friend. Put yourself in situations where you meet new people, doing stuff that you're interested in. It's not complicated. Making close, dear friends, that doesn't happen that often. But having pleasant friends, you can go take a walk, go shopping, stuff like that. Yeah. It makes us healthier, happier and we live longer.
Caller Tracy
Good point.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
We really need it. I can think of so many times in my life if I didn't have friends, I wouldn't have made it.
Caller Tracy
Right. Yeah, I had a lot of friends growing up in college and through my children in sports events and things of that nature. But that was sort of compounded. Again, it's not a cop out because you're absolutely right. But through moving, like every year it seemed when I was a kid, I was always a new kid on the block. So I had to develop my personality and I didn't have a problem with it then, but as I've gotten older, I think I allow the negativity to enter and I'm more or less my own worst enemy.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Why were you abusing alcohol? What feelings were you burying?
Caller Tracy
I was abusing alcohol, I'm assuming. Well, there's a couple of things. Anxiety disorder, I think that I was really never diagnosed.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Ok, how about we never talk about it as a disorder? Anxiety is a part of life and it provides a certain level of awareness that keeps our attention on certain things that might be a threat. Unfortunately, in 2026, for the last 20 years, we use anxiety as though it were always a disorder. I mean, you go to college and you're worried about. I had tremendous anxiety for four years. The exams, the grades, the future. I don't call that a disorder.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger (Podcast Host)
I call it a reasonable response to
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
a lot of stress.
Caller Tracy
Interesting.

But when we but these days everything is a disorder and not a reasonable response to life. Life is not mellow yellow yellow. Almost never. So if we learn early on skills to handle that like with the exams I taught myself a skill I would think when the exam is over I'm going to go to the whatever and I'm going to buy a blueberry muffin. Going to go to the bakery and buy a blueberry muffin. So I would focus on the blueberry muffin. As stupid as that sounds, I love blue. To me it's like cocaine blueberry muffin and get through the exam knowing okay, just get through it. So there are things you can teach yourself or people can help you learn to deal with things that really are not necessarily A biochemical disorder. Now, if your parents moved like every year, then that's like planting something, pulling it out every other day to see if the roots are growing. Roots won't grow. So a lot of learning how to be friends, and over time and all of that, it sounds like you didn't have much of an opportunity to do that. Hence having friends is sort of a stupid idea because you're going to lose them. Yeah, the brain gets into these ruts. But if you say no, that was then. I had no options. But now some people are going to stay close, some people aren't. I'm going to like some people and I'm not going to like some others. So it's going to go both ways. You talk to yourself like this and it takes down the anxiety. You've not cured a disorder. You've identified that this is a response to something, and we can mitigate that response, or I wouldn't have gotten through four years of college. That was very tough with all the exams. And then what do I do? I go to graduate school. More exams. Okay.
Caller Tracy
Right. That's great advice.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
So be kinder to yourself. One of the things alcoholics are not is kind to themselves. They think that the only way they should exist is in a stupor. That's not being kind to oneself. And I bet you had a lot of drunk kind of friends, and they're not there anymore because you're sober.
Caller Tracy
Exactly.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Because they weren't friends. They were cohorts in alcoholism.
Caller Tracy
That's true.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Now you're available to be a friend.
Caller Tracy
Yes, 100%.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
So be kinder to yourself, please, or I'll come to your house and pinch your head off.
Caller Tracy
Okay. Thank you, Dr. Laura.

This episode addresses the emotional and social challenges faced by individuals after achieving sobriety, specifically focusing on feelings of isolation and the struggle to form new friendships later in life. Tracy, a 60-year-old listener and recent empty nester, calls in seeking Dr. Laura's advice about the importance of friendships in adulthood and how to approach forming meaningful connections after years of social withdrawal tied to both her addiction and personal circumstances.
Context and Background:
Her Core Question:
“Is it necessary or is it something that really sort of rounds out my well-being to have some close friends that I can count on if I should need that?” ([03:30])

“I don't want to hear the few attempts I've made haven't worked. I don't care. Figure out why they didn't work. Figure it out. Learn something from it.” ([03:53])

Impact of Childhood Moves:
“If your parents moved every year, then that's like planting something, pulling it out every other day to see if the roots are growing — roots won't grow… So a lot of learning how to be friends, and over time and all of that, it sounds like you didn't have much of an opportunity to do that.” ([10:46])
Reframing the Past:
“You talk to yourself like this and it takes down the anxiety. You've not cured a disorder. You've identified that this is a response to something, and we can mitigate that response…” ([11:11])
Dr. Laura on Kindness and Friendships Post-Sobriety:
“Be kinder to yourself. One of the things alcoholics are not is kind to themselves. They think that the only way they should exist is in a stupor. That's not being kind to oneself.” ([11:25])
