Hello, Dr. Laura, and thank you for taking my call. Thank you. My question is I'm at a new phase in my life. I have just recently retired and I'm happy about that. I'm single, never been married, no children or anything. And I feel like right now, since this is kind of a big transition, I feel a lot of loneliness. And since being at home and not working, a little secluded, you know, probably staying home too much. So my question is, for a person,
Dr. Laura
you just said staying home too much. Yeah, you just said that. So you already know.
Caller
Yes, I do know. I am isolating myself.
Dr. Laura
Yes.
Caller
Out of anxiety, because I do have some anxiety and I think retiring.
Dr. Laura
Everybody every. You ever seen meerkats? They live in the desert in little holes and they're in groups and there's always a few of them up on their hind legs with their front paws or whatever they call them up, and they're constantly looking, looking, looking, looking. Anxiety is a normal state of being. We have elevated it to a disorder when it's to some extent normal, okay? The brain wants to stay alert in order to protect you. I mean, think about it. We lived in caves and there were big animals that could eat us. You know, you had to be in tune. Think about our history as humans. We have to be on it. Now. It could be to the point that a person is under their bed and can't function and you have to drug the crap out of them. But I would say most of it is. You have to learn how to face the things that make you worried, that make you a little scared, that make you feel uncomfortable. Like walking into a room when you're not sure you're wearing the right clothes. You're going to have anxiety. Well, then just tell yourself, screw it. I'm going to work on my personality and not my clothes. You learn how to deal with normal reaction to most of life.
Caller
That's very true. Yes. Well, can I ask you kind of another second part question?
Angel Soft Advertiser
Sure.
Caller
I am isolating and I do identify that. And I. I also feel like when you're older, what are some resources or how do you reconnect? Let's say to establish new friendship and relationship.
Dr. Laura
You put on a cute dress, you fix your hair, put on a reasonable amount of makeup that makes you feel girly girl. I know that always works with me. And you go into the town and you sit there and have a coffee in an outdoor thing with a book or something. And as people walk by, you say, hi, oh, can I look at your dog? And you just start. You just be there. There is no mystery. You have to be other than in your house.
Caller
Yeah, true.
Dr. Laura
And dress the way that makes you feel. Cute.
Caller
I can do that.
Dr. Laura
And go someplace that's outdoor. If it's a park or just a coffee shop. Coffee shops are great places to meet people. You just start conversations. Oh, my God. I read that book.
Caller
Okay, well, I just feel like this is sort of a different ending.
Dr. Laura
Do you realize you're using the word feel way too much?
Caller
Okay, that's a problem. Okay, so if we don't go with feelings, then I would have to state facts correct. Yes. Okay.
Dr. Laura
I'm uncomfortable at this time in my life. I don't know where I'm going. And between now and dead, I really don't know what I'm doing. That's a fact.
Caller
Nutshell.
Dr. Laura
Nutshell. I better do something about it because between now and dead, I don't want to feel like I do right now.
Caller
100%. That's my statement. That was the reason for my call. That pretty much perfect. Yes, perfect.

Caller
Well, I thank you and I know that I can get out at great places here in our city to do things like that and I can be a social person. It's not that I don't like being social, but I kind of think with the transition of coming home from retirement, the part that I didn't plan was the activity of not going to work. That's what I didn't plan, you know, so right. That's where I find myself.
Dr. Laura
And a big chunk of your routine is gone
Caller
and I think not having children or grandchildren, husband, you know, or anything, you know, I live alone and I am single, not dating and it's just really loud. You know, the loneliness of right now feels real loud.
Dr. Laura
Well, if you have some interest, I can understand how it would be unnerving a bit. If you have some interest you can look in the local papers because they often have mature adult singles dances.
Caller
Yes.
Dr. Laura
Me, I would go right there. I want to dance. I don't care who's next to me, who's across from me. I just want to dance. Yeah. I'm a dancing maniac.
Caller
I do that in the house a lot.
Dr. Laura
There you go. Well, now do it in one of those places or you take. They have community teaching you how to dance dances that you don't specifically know how to do.
Caller
Okay. That's a good idea.
Dr. Laura
And that's how you meet people. All the things that you couldn't do because you were freaking working all the time.
Text Now Advertiser
Wow.
Dr. Laura
Do you realize how much of life you didn't do because you were working?
Caller
I know. A lot, a lot.
Dr. Laura
Let's do them now.
Caller
Strange. I think that what I see is we don't really talk about this phase of life a lot. Like what does it mean when you go from a full time working person to no longer working? I think it, I think in my mind if you were married, family, children, well, you would be doing so many other things. Right. One of the footnotes of this, of my call is because I was busy with work and for 15 years I was a caregiver to my mother who was sick. And so between work, taking care of her, helping my sister to raise a young man, that's a young man today, when he was a child. So I was very busy and I don't think I had time.
Dr. Laura
You got, you got sacrificed for other people's well being.
Caller
I did. Yeah.
Dr. Laura
And sacrifice.
Caller
Don't want to cry because I loved it.
Dr. Laura
Cry.
Caller
I love my mom.
Dr. Laura
Cry.
Angel Soft Advertiser
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dr. Laura
But you sacrificed a little too much.
Caller
Yeah. And now you know who I am.
Dr. Laura
Well, let's play catch up and find out.
Caller
Yes. Because I, I don't really know and I'm, I feel so stupid to say I don't even know what I like.
Dr. Laura
I know that because you took care of everybody else and that. Sorry, that was extreme. Your mother could have been dealt with in a different way.
Caller
And your sister, my mother, et cetera, for two years.
Dr. Laura
Yeah, I got that. And you didn't have to be there all the time.
Caller
Yeah. So I feel like I didn't really have a big social life. And so the second phase of this is just the feeling of not really having a friendship circle of people that is temporary. Okay.
Dr. Laura
And you know the best way to get friends.
Caller
How would I do that?
Dr. Laura
Is to be a friend.
Caller
Okay. Well, I, I can I say that I think that I am to other people because a lot of People rely on me in that way.
Dr. Laura
No, that's not. That's not a friend. No, relying on you, that's not a friendship. That's more of you sacrificing.
Caller
Okay.
Dr. Laura
It's mutual reliance. Or it's sacrificing
Caller
well.
Dr. Laura
And you're done with that?
Caller
Yeah. I think I've sacrificed pretty much the first half of my life.
Dr. Laura
Half?
Caller
Yes.
Dr. Laura
How old do you think you're going to be when you die?
Caller
More than half? Three quarters of it. Yeah.
SoFi Advertiser
You're.
Caller
I mean. Okay, okay.
Dr. Laura
You scared me there. I thought, oh, my God, she's going to be here at 140. All right, sweetheart. No, call me. Yeah, well, at 90 we'll get facelifts. Call me again.
Caller
I will. Thank you so much, Dr. Laura, for taking my call. I really appreciate me.

The Dr. Laura Podcast with Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Date: August 1, 2026
In this episode, Dr. Laura takes a call from Lisa, a recent retiree grappling with loneliness and anxiety after transitioning out of full-time work. The discussion centers on the emotional and practical hurdles faced by individuals, especially singles without children, during this significant life shift. Dr. Laura offers candid advice about managing anxiety, reconnecting socially, redefining self-identity, and making the most of life post-retirement.
"Anxiety is a normal state of being. We have elevated it to a disorder when it's to some extent normal, okay? The brain wants to stay alert in order to protect you… You have to learn to face the things that make you worried... You learn how to deal with normal reaction to most of life." (02:17–03:44)
Dr. Laura challenges Lisa’s reliance on feelings:
"Do you realize you're using the word feel way too much? ...If we don't go with feelings, then I would have to state facts, correct? … 'I'm uncomfortable at this time in my life. I don't know where I'm going. And between now and dead, I really don't know what I'm doing.' That's a fact." (04:54–05:23)
Lisa acknowledges that the heart of her transition is uncertainty about how to spend her time and what she wants from life (05:34).
Lisa reflects on years spent working, caring for her sick mother, and supporting her extended family, recognizing, “I got sacrificed for other people's well being” (10:29–10:33).
Dr. Laura observes:
“You sacrificed a little too much.” (10:42)
Lisa admits she does not really know what she likes, having spent so much time meeting other people’s needs (11:04–11:17).
“And you know the best way to get friends... is to be a friend.” (11:42–11:48)
On Normalizing Anxiety:
"Anxiety is a normal state of being. We have elevated it to a disorder when it's to some extent normal."
(Dr. Laura, 02:17)
On Taking Social Initiative:
"You just be there. There is no mystery. You have to be other than in your house."
(Dr. Laura, 04:09)
On Shifting From Feelings to Facts:
"'I'm uncomfortable at this time in my life. I don't know where I'm going. And between now and dead, I really don't know what I'm doing.' That's a fact."
(Dr. Laura, 05:14–05:23)
On Lost Routines:
"Do you realize how much of life you didn't do because you were working?"
(Dr. Laura, 09:31)
On Caregiving and Sacrifice:
"You got sacrificed for other people's well being."
(Dr. Laura, 10:29–10:33)
"You sacrificed a little too much."
(Dr. Laura, 10:42)
On Making New Friends:
"The best way to get friends… is to be a friend."
