Thank you for listening to my morning monologue brought to you by Golden Crest Medals. Find out how gold and silver can protect what you have worked so hard to build. Visit goldencrestmetals.com DrLora Remember, you can hear my radio program daily on Sirius XM Triumph and connect with me 24 7@drlora.com now there have been lots of articles written about how to stay with whatever it is you're doing. And they always list a bunch of things and I read them and I go, no, no, I don't think that's true at all. But you know, just about anything can be printed. So I wanted to talk about how you could stay with your exercise goals because most people who need to exercise also need to eat better. So they have a double whammy. We don't like to eat better. We like to eat the stuff we like to eat. Yeah. And this thing called discipline that gets a bad rap. How do I get discipline? How do I find discipline? It's like it's in the bottom of your sock drawer. It's a habit. You form a new habit. So we have to form all new habits. And transitioning to new habits is not easy. It takes a lot of time. And most people quit. Most people quit because it's uncomfortable. And ultimately they come up with some rationale because it's uncomfortable. Well, I have to work, I have to do this, I have to do that, I have to do the other thing. There's always something. The reality is most human beings brought up in our culture today don't have much stick to itiveness they're not trained to from early childhood. It's okay. It doesn't matter. Failing and winning are the same. We're not going to have valedictorian because it makes everybody else's feelings be hurt. So we don't have a culture anymore which elevates people who work very hard and stick to it. We don't acknowledge them because it makes everybody else feel bad. You see how all that starts very young? We give trophies for showing up. You don't have to actually do anything or practice hard or work hard. You just need to show up. We're not going to give grades anymore because it makes people who suck unhappy to see a C. I'm thinking of geometry. Looking back, I'm amazed I got a C after a certain point. I never got those proofs. I would work really hard, but my brain just said no. My brain likes to do associations. It does not like to look in three dimensions. Now this is an issue and it's probably one of the reasons. Except for technology, there aren't too many female navigator tacticians on the race course in sailboating because it requires being able to see geometrically and we don't the way men can. I mean, there are two bell curves. But once you have technology, I mean, you have an iPad that tells you where to go, it gets easier. But because on the race course, I did a 12, 13 hour race, 13, 13 and a half. It was a long race. If you want to go on my Instagram, there's a picture of us at night while it's a boat and you can see the red moon that was there on the ocean. It was actually quite pretty. It didn't get very cold and it was pretty nice. And some blustering wind came in all of a sudden. And so on waves, I'm surfing, doing like four 14 knots at one point, screaming like crazy. But anytime I looked to see where we were with respect to other people, the guys would all roll their eyes. They would say as soon as their bow turns this around, it looks different. It's geometry. And I would go, okay, forget it. Tell me when we're okay. Tell me when we're not. Just you do it.

So brains have to be trained to aspire and to persevere. Let me say that again. Brains need to be trained to aspire and to persevere. And 98% of you parents don't do that with your kids. Instead you protect them from ever being upset. And what I have Learned in my 71 years is when you're upset, there are a number of alternatives. One of the and they all have stages. So I'll just give the final result. Because you go through stages. You can, you know, kick something and then get back into gear. You can not kick something but get back into gear. You can just walk away from it permanently. You can walk away from it temporarily. So I'm just going to talk about the final result when the going gets tough. They say the tough get going. And that's the truth. And we're not training our kids to be tough. We're training them to be weak and to only be concerned with their feelings. Which is why for decades I have dealt with. I don't want to hear your feelings, I want to understand your thinking. Because ultimately that's where you live. And that's the only. Those are the gears in the car or the motorcycle or the bicycle. The gears in how to handle life are in the brain. They're not in the emotions. Emotions are stupid and they overwhelm you. I know every now and then I have a few. Just kidding. So most of you are training your kids to be weak. And anytime something is difficult to be patted on the head and said it's okay, as opposed to, you damn well better work harder. So when something gets tough, you figure out how to conquer it. So when you're got yourself an exercise program, it gets tough within three weeks, gets boring, it gets tough. I don't want to lift this. I don't feel like it. Oh, a friend of mine, it was hilarious. He said, I have to do this every day. I have to. I mean, he doesn't, but he said, I have to do this every day because the days I don't do it, my muscles feel funny. I said, that's called recovery. They're supposed to feel like crap. That's why you do it every other day. And you work different parts of your body so that all together they can come back in and do the symphony together. Number one, best way to stay with exercise is do it with other people or you have to show up. You have to show up. I had a friend who just doesn't have the discipline God gave. A very quiet snake. I love him dearly, but he has absolutely no discipline. I mean, when I say none, I mean minus number for a year and a half. I said Monday, Wednesday and Friday, you hear at 7:30 I will work you out. He got to the point where he could finally see his toes standing up, looking down. That's how far the tummy came down. He was doing great. Then I realized that there was a plateau in the weight. And I said, you're cheating with the eating, aren't you? Well, yeah. I said, okay, you take off £15 on your own and I'll work you out again. But you have to earn it. Put all the weight back on. But I needed a commitment. I Was putting a lot of effort in. I love him dearly, we're still dear buddies. But he doesn't have the discipline. And it's sad. There's always an excuse. I don't feel I have something to do. There's always something. So number one. And it doesn't mean, I mean, it's nice if you have a trainer and you pay them in advance so you don't want to waste the money. So they walk through the door and you go, I'm going to do this. I ain't throwing that money around. But you just get another guy or gal. You don't have to join a club. I mean, there are all kinds of things you can do. You can meet outside, you can do push ups, you can do squats, you can, you can run around, you can hike. There's a lot of stuff you can do. You don't have to pay for expensive equipment or go to clubs. I don't like going to gyms minimally. They're just not clean. They're just not clean. And people do get infections from touching the equipment and touching each other and. Ugh, no, forget it. I won't do that. Okay, I'm sure there's some clean clubs, gyms, whatever you call them. Or you can bring your own wipes that are antiseptic and you can wear gloves and make sure you have long pants on. See, that's, you know, when you're doing Olympic lifting, it touches your body. Have long pants on. Just. Trouble is, most people go to gyms, they wear less and less and less clothes, which put less stuff, touch skin where it shouldn't. Bad things happen. Okay, so I'd say the number one thing is to do it with somebody because you feel more obligated. That's about it. You go on the net and you'll find long lists of. Yeah, I pulled one off. Do something different. Buy yourself something. Focus on the habits. Stay in the moment. Have daily goals. Do something inspiring. Get back to bed. You know, I've read all these. I don't know what the hell they're talking about. I mean, it's just something to make an article. I still think the number one best thing is to do it with somebody because you're obligated. Accountability makes you show up. Now, I've met people who said, well, I work out seven days a week and they look like a small version of Jabba the Hutt. So what they call a workout and what is a workout are often very different things. My workout's a pretty killer Level. I'm happy when the hour's over, but when I look in the mirror and look at the muscle, there's no way I'm giving this up. No way. Met a very nice lady, 23, a trainer, an athlete, major athlete, really strong looking girl, very pretty, very nice. She was like 100% perfect. And I was saying something, I raised my arm and I said, here, the tattoo is of a shark. It's from the Maori tribe. And I held it up and she went, whoa, look at that muscle. Well, it hadn't been my intention. I was beaming for two hours,
Thumbtack Announcer
two
Dr. Laura Schlessinger
hours in high beam gloat mode. And I said, it used to be a minnow, but now it looks like a shark. So it really is up to you. And if you tend to be a lazy type who quits, I don't care what article you read, I don't care what club you sign up for, you're always going to be like you are and then it's going to get worse. And when you get older, it'll be easier for you to get hurt and die. That's it. I mean, I fell on the sailboat on my hip. If I had not been working out for the last 40 years, I probably would have broken the hip. And then you go to the hospital and then you die. Seems to be what happens when people are older. They break a hip and then go die. And I just stood up and the muscle, my glute muscle just said, we're good, not to worry. So it really matters. Nonetheless, most of you will work out for two days and go, eh, eh. So the best I can tell for you is that ultimately the results are wonderful for you, but most of you live in the moment and if the moment's uncomfortable, that's it for you. Can't live in the moment. That's very spiritually interesting, romantic sounding and for certain things it is useful, but not for training. You have to look at the long run. Six months from now, I'm going to be the bomb. Between now and then, I'm going to hate every day I have to do this, but in six months I'm going to stand in front of a mirror and go, boy, I'm glad I did this. So it's the one thing maybe in particular you should not live in the moment for you live for the long term. And of course, every time I pass a mirror now, I hold up and make a muscle.
