Yes, how can I help?
Melody
Yes ma', am. I am a longtime listener and admirer of you. I appreciate you very much and I've known for yes, I've known for a few years that I should probably have this conversation with you, but I do have a couple of very good counselors. I've been married around 50 years and I'm around 70 years old.
Dr. Laura
You have a couple of counselors at the same time?
Melody
No, I've had two different ones and they both have counseled in the same way over the years.
Dr. Laura
What did they tell you in the same way over the years?
Melody
Well, my husband was A religious leader for many years. And about 10 years ago, well, in the early part of our marriage, he was physically abusive, but it was kept very much a secret. I was very naive and I was very control. Controlled by fear. And when it finally came out.
Dr. Laura
I'm sorry, can you tell me what you were naive about?
Melody
I was afraid to leave him because of things that he would say to put fear in me. And I was afraid I would lose.
Dr. Laura
Well, that's not naivete, that was fear. And what would he say that put terror in your heart?
Melody
He would have a good way of making anyone look bad if he wanted to. And so he would. He would even kind of convince me in my mind with his words and with his sternness that everything was my fault.
Dr. Laura
Can you give me an example of something he pointed out was your fault? Back way when.
Melody
Anything. See here, there's so many. Oh, well, one silly time, I was making a salad and I dropped a piece of lettuce on the floor. And without thinking, I.5 second rule. What I sometimes might do for myself is through the little piece of lettuce back in his salad, which I, you know, I'm not going to do that for company, but I did that. He got pretty mad about it. Got mad. And I. He basically would be mad for me, explaining myself or excusing myself. And then maybe a couple of times a year at the most, it would turn physical. But he knew not to leave bruises. And I know it sounds terror. It sounds ridiculous for me to say only a couple of times a year? Of the year? Per year. But if I fast forward, eventually this was found out and dealt with and he was sent away for treatment for the root problem, which was anger, I guess.
Dr. Laura
I'm sorry, who sent him away?
Melody
The organization he worked for.
Dr. Laura
And how did they find out?
Melody
From me. I discovered also that even though he taught against drinking liquor, that he was doing that, I discovered it online with his voice searches. And then of course, what goes with liquor a lot of times is porn. But if you are a leader and you're teaching against that, I find that extremely hypocritical. And so I did tell the board.
Dr. Laura
So you were willing to snitch on him to get him away?
Melody
Yes.
Dr. Laura
And how come you didn't stay away? That was the perfect out.
Melody
It was, I know partly because the program he went to was very good. And I eventually, after over a year, I agreed to join him there. And then he decided, because of some circumstances, there was some reasons why we needed to get back to our home across the country and I went back with him. But the counselors, the treatment.
Dr. Laura
Did you not enjoy the year alone?
Melody
Absolutely I did. Yes, I know, I know I missed the perfect out.
Dr. Laura

So even though you enjoyed the year alone, you still worried that what.
Melody
I. I believe that I'm just. I don't. I don't like the thought of divorce. I get married and I.
Dr. Laura
You didn't have to divorce. You could have just stayed away from him. And you didn't do that because.
Melody
Well, I did not. Well, because I didn't think financially that I could. That it would work out because he's a sole breadwinner. However, since then, since we've been back, there's been nothing physical because he knows it will be a felony and he knows what I'll do. I'll turn him in. But you have the power now. Yes. Yes. And he.
Dr. Laura
I've learned you're the intimidator. Wow.
Melody
I am becoming. Yeah, I've become a lot stronger. I have found out that a legal separation will enable me to be taken care of financially. My marriage counselor from that program. Yeah, I had no idea that that was even anything about that.
Dr. Laura
I mentioned that a lot on air. Yeah, go ahead.
Melody
Well, and I. I don't ever get to listen to you unless I'm in my vehicle. Well, actually, now I. I finally have it on an app.
Dr. Laura
So when did he get out of this program? How long ago?
Melody
Oh, boy. It's been six or seven years ago.
Dr. Laura
So what brings us to today?
Melody
All right. We. We went back to our home. He was. He was seemingly changed, but I had doubts and so did the program. That. It was a deep change. It was just to get me back. Since he's been back, we. He goes in cycles. Right now, he's on a very, very sweet, kind cycle. But periodically, every so many weeks, if we disagree about something, it turns extremely ugly. And I have found that he has asked a couple of my friends to lie about stupid little. Just stupid little things like.
Dr. Laura
So what is your plan today and how can I help you?
Melody
All right. I think that I just need confirmation or encouragement to spend the money to get a legal separation. And I would move away for a period of time. And if he can really prove it to me by going back into treatment, you know, I know.
Dr. Laura
My God, how many people does it Take to tell you, you know, most of your life was taken up with this situation, so I think you just don't want to give it up. Really?
Melody
And why I want.
Dr. Laura
Not really, because it's been your whole life. What are you going to do? You're going to find another guy? You can't. You'll still be married.
Melody
I don't want another guy.
Dr. Laura
You'll be in limbo. You will be in limbo. Don't laugh. That's not a fact.
Melody
Yeah.
Dr. Laura
So you're just going to put yourself in limbo, and every now and then, when it gets kind of uncomfortable being in limbo, you'll give him another shot.
Melody
Well, I don't want to do that.
Dr. Laura
Yes, you do. You just said to me you were willing to do that.
Melody
Yeah, well, on certain conditions, but I.
Dr. Laura
You had a condition. He went to get help. You had the condition already. And even they told you they didn't think it would keep. So you are not being honest with yourself as to why ultimately you really don't want to let go of him when he's sweet. It's wonderful. The money is there and you will be taken care of. And you don't have to worry. This is all you've known your whole adult life. Anything else would be way too unfamiliar and uncomfortable. What else would you like to add to the list? Please go.
Melody
What else would I like to add to the list? As far as what. What type of list?
Dr. Laura
As far as what else I can help you with. I think we're done.
Melody
Okay.
Dr. Laura
No, you're not paying attention anymore, so.
Melody
Oh, I am. I am.
Dr. Laura
You know, I. I gave you the list of reasons to stay and you blanked out on me. I said you've spent your whole adult life with him and you wouldn't know anything else. The money would be convenient and he's very sweet to you sometimes, and that would be something to give up,
Melody
which
Dr. Laura
I want to add to that list. Do you want to add something to that list?
Melody
Please, no.
Dr. Laura
Because that covers it all.
Melody
I think I know what I need to do. I just.
Dr. Laura
Well, you needed to do it for 40 years.
Melody
You're right.
Dr. Laura
What makes this time different from all other times? The older you are, the harder it is to do this because the less security you'll have and the less options you'll have. So why now do you think you're ready to do this?
Melody
That's a good question. Because I would like to spend my golden years in a golden way. And I can do that by myself. Yeah. I can do that by myself.
Dr. Laura
Finally. Finally. Good for you, Melody. Good for you. That was amazing. Hard put to get there, but that was amazing.
Melody
Wow.

Melody seeks guidance on whether to pursue a legal separation from her husband, a former religious leader whose abusive behaviors—hidden for years—continue to affect her. Dr. Laura unpacks Melody's journey of enduring, disclosing, and coping with abuse, addressing the complexities of dependency, fear, identity, and the daunting process of change in later life.

This episode powerfully illustrates the intricate layers of surviving, confronting, and potentially moving beyond a lifetime of intimate abuse. Dr. Laura’s direct approach, equal parts confrontational and supportive, helps Melody untangle her fears and dependencies to envision a future of autonomy. Melody’s progression—from recounting decades of pain to expressing a desire for “golden years in a golden way”—serves as both a cautionary tale and a beacon for others in similar circumstances. Dr. Laura’s unwavering candor offers not just advice, but challenge—and ultimately, the permission—to pursue a life worth living.
