Hi Dr. Laura. Thanks for taking my call. I'm a longtime listener, so happy to talk to you.
A
Thank you.
B
I'm hoping today you could help me with a couple possible responses. When my mom who's grieving my dad's death, he died three years ago. They were married for 59 years. You know, she says some things like she's she's just done living or doesn't want to keep living and I'm not sure how to respond.
A
How about I thoroughly understand that but I would miss you
B
so just pretty.
A
It's interesting. Old old old Shhh. Old old old People often die within a year and a half of one another. When they've been married that long, that is huge percentage. It's fascinating. So she's surviving that, but she sees no reason for living. She can't go play tennis, she can't eat whatever she wants. She's alone without her man. She's looking down the barrel of being dead of something. She's not happy. It's not unusual for people in her circumstance to say that and actually hope they won't wake up tomorrow. So it's important for you to say, thoroughly understand that I would miss you though, because right now she's just thinking about everything she misses. And maybe it would be a little bit of a perk for you to say you understand, instead of arguing or telling her, no, no, you shouldn't think or feel that way because I think you in her position would say the same thing, the exact same thing. So say I thoroughly understand, but I would miss you. You know, this is life.
B
Yeah. Okay. Okay. She also. Is there. Can I ask you another kind of correlating question? You know, she has a lot of regret about or says she has a lot of regret about different things with her marriage to my dad.
A
Yeah. And you say, and this is what you say and this is what you. I don't know what you're laughing about. I'm trying to get your attention. And this is when you say, this is serious business and I am trying to help. Okay? So stay with me and if I start talking, hopefully it'll be useful. All right?
C
So.
A
So that's when you say to her, even mom, I get it. I wish I could hit the rewind button too.
B
I like that.
A
Short and sweet. Making a profound point. There's nothing we can freaking do about it. But that's all she has to do is go backwards. So maybe you can. Does she have, has she ever had a hobby she liked? Anything from playing the piano to knitting?

Some she did do a lot of quilting for a while but but I don't know that she has that kind of a group now. Where she where she lives? She's in an independent living area.
A
Okay, do research and get in your car. Get in an airplane, get in a bus. However you get to her, find a good place that has older women. Usually it is doing the quilting things, which I think takes unbelievable patience. I could never do that. It's too hard. But anyway, I admire quilts. I have bought them over the years. I am amazed that people can be that artistic and that painstaking about stitching. So find it. Take her there. Let's see if we can reignite something in her past that she does not have regret for quilting my number 1-800-375-2872 if you like this podcast, be sure to rate it on Apple podcasts or your favorite place to list to my podcast, of course.
