So let's do it. It's signed Sarah. I was listening to today's episode was Rolling my Eyes about the guy who wrote in about limp dicks. They're a real tragedy. Clearly doesn't listen to the show, doesn't know how you champion for ladies to treat their men better and choose wisely. My daughter and I have talked about calling you. She's 12, I'm 39. I've been married to her dad for 19 years. We have a rare marriage that really worked. I look forward to him coming home every single day. He makes me laugh and he is so helpful every day when he comes home from work. He's a retired Marine. I remember my mom and dad listening to you back in the day. I haven't gotten to the main point yet. Hang in there. Ever since I found you on Sirius, I listen every day. Back to my daughter. She is very good in school, makes great decisions outside of house. I consider myself sort of a hippie ish mom. I've always encouraged her to make her own choices since she has been able to since the age of four. I didn't have a lot of rules. Just be kind, be respectful, be a kid, have fun. Even before 4 she was independent, great imagination, played by herself for hours. I told her to dress how you want, do your hair how you want, dance if you want to dance. I was trying to encourage her to make her be herself. Now that she's a bit older, she questions a lot of her decisions. The things she questions herself Ordering food, what her next craft is, what color should it be, what to wear, what to say, how to spend her money. I just want her to feel confident in her decisions. If this warrants a call to you, we are totally open to it. Love your wisdom and advice. Also about myself, I'm very impulsive. Marrying at 20 was a big one. I know what I want when I want it. I never question it. So it's hard for me to relate to her and have patience with it. This is the key. Okay, I assume since you say you're always listening, that you're listening. So here's my answer. She's desperate for a mother to guide her out of the clear blue. Where the hell do you think an adolescent is supposed to know enough to make all these decisions?

This is a bit of anxiety and a desperate desire as all kids have. Even though they fight it. To have rules, to have limits, to know easily. Because mom and dad said this is good, this is not good. Do this not having any limits or any idea about how to make good decisions. I mean, you tell a kid, do whatever you want when they're little. That's fun. When you get older, life is more complicated. Do whatever you want is still risky. She needs your guidance. That's why she's acting this way. She wants your input. She wants to discuss these choices with you. She's desperately desiring limits and insight. She needs what you've learned in a lifetime to help her make good decisions. So she's picking even on things that are stupid just to get you to participate. She's trying to get you to participate. She needs more input, guidance and direction from you. Even though they fight it, they desire it, they need it. Because without it, as you can hear, they're somewhat lost. How are they supposed to know enough to make a decision? First thing they tell you when you're making a decision is get a lot of information at 1112. Where is she supposed to get the information from? Social media? Her peers? No, the information's got to come from you and dad. So stop being hippie. Ish. Sounds like it reasonably worked well with you, but you got yourself a nice guy who was a Marine for God's sake. That's limits and rules. Help your daughter. She's a little lost, as all kids are. Okay, I liked that. This episode centers on an email from a listener, Sarah, who is seeking advice on how to help her 12-year-old daughter build confidence in decision-making. The show's core discussion explores the balance between encouraging independence in children and the essential role of parental guidance, especially during adolescence. Dr. Laura addresses the pitfalls of a “hippie-ish,” highly permissive parenting style and underscores the adolescent’s innate need for parental input, rules, and limits.
“She’s desperate for a mother to guide her. Out of the clear blue: where the hell do you think an adolescent is supposed to know enough to make all these decisions?” – Dr. Laura [03:58]
“This is a bit of anxiety and a desperate desire–as all kids have, even though they fight it–to have rules, to have limits, to know easily: Because mom and dad said this is good, this is not good. Do this.” – Dr. Laura [06:51]
“Where is she supposed to get the information from? Social media? Her peers? No, the information’s got to come from you and dad.” – Dr. Laura [07:45]
“Help your daughter. She’s a little lost, as all kids are.” – Dr. Laura [08:30]
“Now that she’s a bit older, she questions a lot of her decisions…I just want her to feel confident in her decisions.” – Listener, Sarah [02:54]
“Not having any limits or any idea about how to make good decisions...You tell a kid, ‘do whatever you want’ when they’re little–that’s fun. When you get older, life is more complicated.” – Dr. Laura [06:57]

"The information’s got to come from you and dad. So stop being hippie-ish." – Dr. Laura [08:00]
Dr. Laura’s tone is candid, brisk, and occasionally humorous, using rhetorical questions and direct advice to drive her points home. She is empathetic but unapologetically firm about the need for parental authority and active guidance during a child’s adolescence.
If you’re a parent wondering when to step in and how much to let go, this episode affirms the importance of balancing autonomy with the direction your children openly and secretly crave.
