got some quickies this morning. A quickie is a short question that
you'd like to ask in writing
and hope I will answer it on the air. I generally do. I think I can make any headway with it and to send me a quickie, it's quickierlora.com so this is from Christina. I have a question about scheduling a funeral on the same day as my nephew's graduation. Is that a terrible idea? There is a ton of history. My nephew is from my brother. My brother committed suicide five years ago. The funeral is for my mom. My nephew will more than likely not go to the funeral. I don't think the nephew not going to the funeral is the point. Of course it's a terrible idea to force a family to subdivide itself, graduations, funerals. To do that we'd have a motivation to hurt somebody, to stick it to somebody, to put somebody in a difficult situation, to make our stamp, to make a statement of some kind is why we set up any kind of polarity. People would have to make a choice, which you would then take personally.

I mean, really doesn't matter if the nephew is coming to his aunt's mother's funeral. There's a whole family. And it's also your way of saying, na na na na na, I'm not coming to the graduation and if you cared about me, you'd come to my event. It's like two teenage girls each having a party on the same day. Except this is a family. And your third statement there is a ton of history. Yeah, sounds like it. However, why add more to it? My number 1-800-375-2872.

Host: Dr. Laura Schlessinger
Date: March 22, 2026
In this episode, Dr. Laura tackles a delicate family dilemma: how to handle major life events that are scheduled on the same day, specifically when a family funeral conflicts with a graduation ceremony. Drawing from a listener’s heartfelt email, Dr. Laura dissects the motivations and emotional repercussions behind such scheduling, offering her trademark candid advice on navigating conflicting obligations within families—especially those with a complicated history. The central message is about preventing unnecessary divisions and emotional warfare within families when scheduling significant events.
On Creating Family Conflict:
"Of course it's a terrible idea to force a family to subdivide itself, graduations, funerals. To do that we'd have a motivation to hurt somebody, to stick it to somebody... make our stamp, to make a statement of some kind is why we set up any kind of polarity."
— Dr. Laura Schlessinger (02:07–02:21)
On Handling Family History:
"Your third statement there is a ton of history. Yeah, sounds like it. However, why add more to it?"
— Dr. Laura Schlessinger (05:47)
On the Petty Nature of Such Conflicts:
"It's like two teenage girls each having a party on the same day. Except this is a family."
— Dr. Laura Schlessinger (05:47)
Dr. Laura’s approach in this episode is characteristically direct, empathetic, and anchored in her no-nonsense philosophy. She doesn't pull punches about the negative effects of fueling family divisions, but also offers a sense of compassion for those caught in the crossfire of complicated histories.
Scheduling major life events such that they conflict—especially in troubled families—risks deepening wounds and perpetuating old grievances. Dr. Laura urges listeners to act with kindness and consideration, opting to reduce, not increase, family pain. Her advice: Don't force impossible choices. Strive for compassion over competition.
