B
Hi, Dr. Laura.
A
Hi, how can I help you?
B
So me and my wife, we had been married for 30 years. Three years ago, almost to the day, we had planned on going to a fair and she collapsed in the shower and had a cranial brain hemorrhage. And I happened to be home and I got her to the. She would. The ambulance came, got her to the hospital. She ended up being blind and crippled on her left side, which. That got restored over the next year. But I feel like. I feel like now like my feelings towards her are just more of like a caregiver. Like, I really, you know, I love her, I'm there to protect her because she can't do a lot of stuff. But as far as, like, sexually, it's just gone. Like, I don't know if it happened during her being, you know, three years of just. But it's just there's. I really just. She's changed so much. I don't really feel like it's my life.
A
Well, it is a life. It's just very, very, very different than it has been and very, very different from what you anticipated at this point in your life?
B
Yes.
A
So are you looking for a way out?
B
You know, I was. I was very, very frustrated at, at the first because, you know, our kids are out of the house. I was left with just having to take care of her and I'm self employed, so that became very tough and you know, a lot of stuff got. She was my bookkeeper and stuff like that. So we just had a very easy life. Everything was good. I just. I. No, I'm not looking for a way out at all.
A
Okay, then what are you looking for that I could help you find?
B
Is it normal with someone that goes through something like that? Is it normal for the spouse to change feelings towards their wife? As far as if their personality changes, their voice changes?
A
Yeah, of course. Of course it is. It's very shattering, very upsetting, very scary. So the answer to your question. No, it's not unusual. Do you have another question?
B
Yes. She is wanting to know why I am not attracted to her.
A
What makes her think. What makes her think that?
B
Because. Because I. I don't really want to have sex with her. Because I don't really want to hurt her. As far as she's very frail now, you know, because I really don't feel like it's my wife.
A
Wait a minute. How is. Okay, well, slow down, David. I can't do too many things at one time. You'll have to slow down. Okay.
B
Okay.
A
Is she wanting to have sex? Yes or no?
B
Yes.
A
Okay, then why don't you two figure out how to do it? Could be a little bit funny too. Could be a charming way for you to giggle together to figure out how to make this work. Yes, she would like that. Whether she's frail or not, she's not the robust woman. But think about it. Typically speaking, statistically speaking, this should have been you.
B
Oh, I. So I think it happened.
A
You can wish. Yeah, okay, stop. It doesn't matter what you wish. Statistically speaking, this could have been you. And you ought to keep that in mind when you decide how to treat her. Think about if it were flipped the other way around, what would you like? And you'd probably like, if you wanted to try to have sex, even though it was a little uncomfortable and strange, you'd probably be grateful, embarrassed, awkward, but grateful that she wants to spend some time in a bed with you, trying to figure out how to make it work, she needs to know she's not dead to you.

So you're going to have to hug her and kiss her and caress her and rub her feet and do all kinds of fun things while you're talking about stuff and then say, let's give it a shot. You got to figure out how to make this work.
B
Okay?
A
It's a challenge. It's a challenge, not an impasse.
B
Yes.
A
And you. I spoke to a man once about something related. He was no longer feeling close to his wife. And I said, it's largely because you don't touch her. This was after the discussion. So I told him what to do, basically. So there he is at dinner. And I got a call the next day. Here he is at dinner. And he got up out of his chair to go get some. Something from the refrigerator that he really didn't want, but it was an excuse. And when he got up and walked behind her, he took one of his hands and just gently ran it across the back of her neck as he walked along. And he said he felt an electrical impulse. So you can't just stay in your head and expect things to bloom. You've really got to physically connect. So the more physical connection you do with her, the more enthusiasm you're going to have for being creative with her and having some fun together. Whether you have intercourse or oral sex or you just rub each other a lot or whatever. We could get back to what you did early on in the marriage. We could get some of that back. But you have to be willing to be a little uncomfortable, to feel awkward, to be a little embarrassed. You have to be willing.
B
I could do that.
A
I bet you can. And you can always call me back.
B
Thank you, Dr. Laura.
