Mrs. Truffles
From deep in the heart of Beverly Hills, you found for love and chocolate with Mr. And Mrs. Truffles.
Mr. Truffles
Welcome back to the podcast.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh, welcome back, everybody. Hi. I'm so happy right now, sweetheart.
Mr. Truffles
I bet I know why.
Mrs. Truffles
Tell me why.
Mr. Truffles
Well, because not only was yesterday a beautiful Mother's Day, it also marked the end of our busy holiday season.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh, my goodness. Yes.
Mr. Truffles
Yes, it does. You know, we love our little shop, but come Thanksgiving, things start to heat up in there. And I don't mean like, actually, we keep the air conditioner on all the time, but it starts to get really busy because people love chocolate for the holidays. They love it for Valentine's Day.
Mrs. Truffles
They love it for Easter Mother's Day. I will tell you, I feel like the marathoners after they cross the finish line, and they have that glow. That glow. I mean, I'm the guy that usually falls down at the end, but they just have this incredible sense of accomplishment and completion, and that's kind of how I feel. I mean, I think the most I've ever run is a mile, but I had that same feeling right when I finished, and it's really nice to be on the other side of it.
Mr. Truffles
Yes. But we do have another season that kind of starts this time of year.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh, yes.
Mr. Truffles
That is a little extra special because, you know, here on the podcast, we are big fans of weddings and marriage and love.
Mrs. Truffles
That's right.
Mr. Truffles
And this is the time of year when we start getting a lot of wedding orders, I think. So it's a little exciting. It is a little extra romantic. It's so cute to see the couples come in with their shiny new diamonds and their big smiles, and they're just so excited, picking out the colors. So we have a lot of things we can do for weddings, but the most popular thing we do is called a little two piece party favor. And we did this for Oliver's wedding.
Mrs. Truffles
That's right. We did it for my son Oliver and his beautiful wife Marissa.
Mr. Truffles
Yes. And they chose, like, this really pale green with white ribbon. It was so elegant, so pretty. And they're just these charming little boxes that just. They make any table setting, just next level and. Or sometimes people just pass them out at the end. But we also have these little character boxes, which look like little paper dolls. They kind of look like small world characters at Disneyland, and they hold truffles inside. And these we have in wedding couples.
Mrs. Truffles
Yep.
Mr. Truffles
And then the other thing we do that's really beautiful for weddings is we have these gorgeous floral boxes, and these are all handmade in Zurich. And they've got all these silk flowers on top of this beautiful box. And sometimes people will show us a. Send us a picture of their wedding flower arrangement. And our artists in Zurich will copy that arrangement.
Mrs. Truffles
It's really. They do such a beautiful job.
Mr. Truffles
It's stunning. And so there's a lot of different things we can do. So a lot of people come to us. And it is kind of an exciting little holiday season. And one of my favorite weddings was one of those flower boxes. When we did Barbara and Richard's wedding.
Mrs. Truffles
Yeah, that was so sweet.
Mr. Truffles
Yeah. This lovely couple who are longtime toysher chocolate fans. And when they got married, they decided instead of using actual flowers as centerpieces on the table, that they would use these big flower boxes. And it was gorgeous. So we. They actually ordered some beautiful ones. Do you remember what color they were?
Mrs. Truffles
I think they were white.
Barbara
Right.
Mrs. Truffles
Didn't they have those beautiful.
Mr. Truffles
And then they ended up postponing the wedding because of all the cuckoo ness that was going on at that time. And they ended up going with spring colors and. And doing these beautiful lavender and lily boxes.
Mrs. Truffles
Yeah. What a special wedding that was. But just such a lovely couple. I mean, they lived in Sedona and they would order this beautiful 72 piece box of assorted truffles every month.
Mr. Truffles
Yeah, they're standing order.
Mrs. Truffles
Standing order so much. We actually would take a picture of it so that we got it right. It couldn't have been more lovely. But it was just something that, you know, they looked forward to every month. And we always looked forward to putting it together for them.
Mr. Truffles
Well, and Richard started seeing doctors in Beverly Hills sometimes because a lot of people come here from all over the world for that. And they would always stop into the shop to see us.
Mrs. Truffles
And such a beautiful, handsome girl. Elegant.
Mr. Truffles
They looked so Sedona. He had this great cowboy hat, gorgeous jewelry. They just looked so Sedona. There was that etherealness to them.
Mrs. Truffles
Yeah. So comfortable in their own skin and so in love. It was really so beautiful.
Mr. Truffles
Yeah. So they were older, they met later in life. They were both widows. And it was just really special to be part of their journey to get to know them.
Mrs. Truffles
Always look forward to seeing them or hearing from them. So Richard and Barbara, when we think about them, they were really a great part of the inspiration for us to actually start this podcast in the first place.
Mr. Truffles
Yeah. They were one of those couples that just inspired us with their love and with. We just felt like we wanted to share all of these beautiful little stories with everyone.
Mrs. Truffles
They represented everything that we're trying to put forth with regards to love and romance and adventure and chocolate. I mean, the chocolate was a big part of their lives.
Mr. Truffles
So in honor of Richard and Barbara, we're gonna do something a little different this week for our mailbag. You know, sometimes we like to answer the questions and sometimes we like to bring in experts. This week we're just gonna take a little walk down memory lane.
Richard
I'm going on a sentimental journey.
Mr. Truffles
Welcome to our new segment, Sentimental Journey. Today we're going to share something very special with you. Something so moving. You know, we were just talking about Richard and Barbara, our very special customers, and how they had a standing order with us every month for a 72 piece box of chocolates. And they would always give us a call when they were ready for us to send it. We didn't want to send it if they were out of town or they weren't quite ready for it. A couple of months went by and we didn't hear from them. And then we received this letter from Barbara. It was such a beautiful handwritten letter and it explained why we hadn't heard.
Barbara
From them in a while. So here's the letter. Dear Mr. And Mrs. Truffles and my dear toyscher family. I know you must wonder where we went. I am so saddened to be writing this letter. Richard and I love the chocolates from Zurich in your Beverly Hills shop. So many memories. Richard passed away, transitioned into the Great beyond on April 6, 2023 at 2:45pm I cannot tell you the sadness that fills my heart day and night. I feel honored to have been married to such a divine, kind, loving man is Richard. He called me his precious, precious pearl. But he was the gem I felt I wanted to write when I had my thoughts together. Wishing everyone as much joy as I had. The years with him and only a short eight years. Richard and I had a ritual for years with our chocolates from you. Here is the story from the beginning. Our story. I always loved the champagne truffle, one of my very favorite for years. One day this amazing man walked into my life. A neighbor from across the street from where I had just moved in. And we became friends. I came to find out that he did not drink, but I did entice him with one of my favorite champagne truffles. A sure way to a man's heart and his was special. Over time we became inseparable and so were the chocolates. If ever there was an addiction that we shared, it was our evening dinner followed by Toyscher chocolates. Two each. As our love grew, so did the chocolate addiction. But only for toys or chocolates. And as our love grew, marriage was proposed and Toyshire chocolates were in store for all of our wedding guests. We had a ritual where the candles were lit every night for dinner, and Richard referred to them as the chocolate lights. And I, Barbara, the chocolate master, meaning that if a third chocolate wasn't ordered, the candles stayed lit until the last chocolate was shared. Richard went into the hospital on March 3, 2023, and on April 5, I went and brought him home to our ranch. He arrived home around 6pm he settled into bed and we sat talking as best he could. And he said, remember the ritual. Get the box. I knew what he meant, and I went and returned with the box of chocolates. He said, tonight, you choose my piece of chocolate. This is the hard part. He's. I don't know if I can. I need you to do this, babe. I gently placed it into his mouth. He smiled and savored his delicious, precious chocolate. His piece of chocolate was his last taste of sweetness in this life. We enjoyed the moment together, just as we had when we first met. A true story of our love and love for Deutsche chocolate. When the chocolate runs out, you still have the memories.
Mr. Truffles
Much love, Barbara.
Barbara
We sure do miss them. And it just reminds me how much I love you.
Mrs. Truffles
They were such a special couple and such an inspiration, and I'd like to dedicate this song to them. So this one's for you guys.
Richard
If you were falling, then I would catch you. You need a light, I'd find a match. Cause I love the way you say good morning. And you take me the way I am. If you are chilly here take my sweater. Your head is aching. I'll make it better. Cause I love the way you call me baby. And you take me the way I am. I'll buy you fun hats. When you start losing all your hair. Bring you chocolate to know I care. Cause I love you more than I could ever promise. And you take me the way I am. You take me the way I am. You take me the way.
Mr. Truffles
Beautiful song for a beautiful couple.
Barbara
That was perfect.
Mr. Truffles
And we have another beautiful couple to talk about today. Another wonderful true love pair. Tell us about our guest today, Mr. Truffles.
Mrs. Truffles
So a little bit about our guests, Ricky and Barry Savchick. Ricky Dale Savchick is a forever Jersey gal who moved to LA in the early 90s to pursue an acting career. She's worked as an actor acting coach and is currently the president of Ricky Dale Management, representing talent in theater, TV and film. A few careers, but one husband who has been by her side through this crazy journey we call life. They have three kids raised in la, but all New York Ranger fans. The secret to a long marriage. Chocolate. Barry Savchak, who in the late 80s and early 90s sported what the Asbury park press called the world's greatest mullet, Gave up his dream of playing drums for the who or left wing for the New York Rangers so the love of his life could pursue her dreams of playing a hooker on NYPD Blue. Now that's true love. With his dreams dashed, he figured he needed to carve out a career in the most unstable biz on the planet, TV writing. But with the support of his loving wife, he was able to carve out that career, even employing her on some of his shows. She will tell you that he was the best and fastest writer to ever fetch her anything she needed on set. Two careers, three unique, passionate and beautiful children. And almost 40 years later, she remains the all consuming love of his life. And for the record, she was one smoking hooker on NYPD Blue. So there you have it, the Safchecks. And they'll be with us when we come back on for Love and chocolate. For over 40 years, Toyshire has been a staple in the Beverly Hills community. Like so many other families in the community, our family has had a long standing love affair with Toyscher chocolates. Over the years, we formed traditions and memories around these extraordinary Swiss chocolates and the enchanting wonderland of fantasy truffle boxes inside our store. Today, our family is proud to be carrying on the Teisher tradition in Beverly Hills. Welcome back, everybody. We. I'm sorry, you tell me if I'm seeing things, but I feel like we're sitting across from Fran Drescher and Bruce Springsteen. Do you get that vibe? A little bit.
Mr. Truffles
You mean that's not Fran Drescher?
Mrs. Truffles
It might be.
Mr. Truffles
They are married. Right.
Mrs. Truffles
But we do have Ricky and Barry Savchick and we are so happy to have them. Welcome to the show, guys.
Mr. Truffles
Yeah, welcome.
Ricky Savchick
Thank you.
Mr. Truffles
Good to have you here.
Mrs. Truffles
So, just a little background. I've actually, I'm gonna say it, sweetheart. It sounds silly.
Mr. Truffles
Can I make a guess?
Mrs. Truffles
Go ahead.
Barbara
30 years.
Mrs. Truffles
I've known them for 30 years. Am I wrong? Maybe 25.
Barry Savchick
Yeah, I would say probably about 2,000. So.
Mrs. Truffles
Okay. Yeah, we were neighbors for a number of years and they were.
Richard
You know what?
Mrs. Truffles
They were a really refreshing addition to the neighborhood.
Barry Savchick
They really were as you were.
Mr. Truffles
I'm sure.
Mrs. Truffles
As I was.
Barry Savchick
Mrs.
Mrs. Truffles
Troubles, this is.
Mr. Truffles
Well, how long have you guys been married?
Ricky Savchick
Let's see if you can. But see, don't think too hard.
Barry Savchick
No, I. 34. It'll be 35 in November.
Richard
35.
Ricky Savchick
What am I getting? A box of toy shirt.
Barry Savchick
Chocolate. A big box. A big box. 3.5 pounds for 35.
Mrs. Truffles
That's been something you've been doing for a couple years.
Ricky Savchick
I will take it. That is. That is something we've been doing.
Mrs. Truffles
So for celebrations and when you're in the doghouse, you usually go. Yes.
Barry Savchick
I learned after year eight that flowers die. So it's been chocolates ever since.
Mr. Truffles
I like it. So tell us, how did you two first meet?
Ricky Savchick
This is a true story. I came in through the bathroom window. Go ahead, Bar.
Barry Savchick
It's been so long. And there's been a lot of recreational drugs in between. So there's many variations of the story. But the story that I remember most is really, you stole my jacket.
Ricky Savchick
Oh, yeah.
Barry Savchick
Her maiden name is Bernstein. Yes. But I had a friend, one of my roommates in college, we met in college. He came to me one day and said, oh, I saw this girl, she's so your type. I'm like, really? Who? Her name is Ricky Greenberg. All right. So I spend a couple weeks looking for a Ricky Greenberg, not to be found. And then I met her one night I was out with all my friends. And you'll tell your side of the story. All I know is my jacket was missing from the bar and found out that she took it, so I would call her and come get it.
Mrs. Truffles
Is that true?
Ricky Savchick
That is true. So I was a freshman in college, and I was young because I have like an August birthday.
Mrs. Truffles
A young freshman.
Ricky Savchick
I was a young freshman and a fifth year senior.
Barry Savchick
Not quite.
Ricky Savchick
He was a fourth year senior. He stayed to be a fifth year senior so we could hang out. But that's a whole other story. My older sister Lisa was at school with us.
Mrs. Truffles
Lisa Greenberg.
Ricky Savchick
Lisa Greenberg, correct. I had said to her, I had seeing this guy, it was, you know, the beginning of freshman year. He's in the library, he's got this big patch of gray hair. And Lisa, my sister, said, oh, we all know him. We call him the Skunk. And he hangs out with like this Long island group of guys and everything. And I was like, lee, he's so cute. You gotta hook me up. And she was like, I think he's a senior. The seniors and the freshmen don't really fraternize kind of thing. She said, but I know where he hangs out. So she and her friends were going to this bar, Jr's, and I didn't have ID.
Mrs. Truffles
Sorry, little context. We're at UMass.
Ricky Savchick
You were UMass Amherst.
Mrs. Truffles
Amherst. Yep.
Barry Savchick
Yep.
Ricky Savchick
I didn't have ID. So my sister went into the bathroom at Jr's and opened the bathroom window for me so I could sneak in with my freshman friends. So we all climbed in through the window, and he was there, and I was hanging out with him. And we definitely were, like, flirting, and we hit it off. And then my sister was like, you know, I think he has a girlfriend. I've seen him with a girl. That kind of started that night. I did steal his jacket that night, and I took it back to my dorm with me.
Mrs. Truffles
With a purpose.
Ricky Savchick
Yeah, he was. He was, like, buzzed. I don't really drink. Even back then, I didn't drink too much. So I knew what I. It was with intent.
Barry Savchick
Yes.
Ricky Savchick
You knew that was his jacket.
Barry Savchick
Members only.
Mrs. Truffles
What year?
Barry Savchick
This is 84.
Mrs. Truffles
Wow.
Mr. Truffles
Okay.
Ricky Savchick
This was 84. Kind of wore the jacket during that week, but we didn't really talk during the. You know, it was before cell phones and stuff. Like, you actually have to, like, call somebody on the phone. So it's, like, really looking forward to the weekend. But during the week, I was at college to study. I was a nerd. I would go into the library. And he hung out at the library a lot. He would sit there with, like, piles of newspapers. And I kept saying to my sister, he's really smart. He's gotta be either pre law or journalism. Journalism. Or he is just sitting there every day going through the papers. My sister, she's my big sister. She's very protective of me. She was. She kept telling me, just be careful. I know there's another girl. And I just kept going to stalk him in the library. And I would go up, talk to him a little. Finally, it was November 25, 1984. He asked me to an Elton John concert.
Barry Savchick
Oh, yeah.
Ricky Savchick
That was our very first call on the phone. No, he asked me at the library. He came up to me. I was studying for an exam, and he came up.
Barry Savchick
I mean, she was wearing my jacket. Ricky Greenberg Bernstein. Okay, now it's starting to make sense. You know, I had a friend who, you know, like to smoke a lot of weed.
Ricky Savchick
So.
Barry Savchick
Greenberg Bernstein. I get it. She's wearing my jacket. She is everything he promised. I was. I melted. And I was like, hey, tonight I'm going with two friends to see Elton John at the Centrum. You want to go she's like, well, I got a lot of studying.
Ricky Savchick
I had an exam. My first college exam was the next day. Ricky, I know, but you went.
Barry Savchick
We went and we went. And I could tell you. I could tell you the moment that I knew I was gonna marry her, that was. So we're together again. We went with two friends who drove. Ricky and I are in the backseat. We get there. I scalp a couple of tickets, go in. It's just the two of us. We're sidestage. It's Elton. It's awesome. He starts playing Tiny Dancer. And this one just kind of leaned in and whispered, I love this song. Italian Dancer. And I said, I'm gonna marry you. That was it. I was in. I was all in.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh, but she wasn't kidding.
Barry Savchick
She was tall. Mike. She's the worst when it comes to words. Italian dancer and it's been a joke.
Ricky Savchick
What was our wedding song?
Barry Savchick
Your song? It was Ellen. It had to be.
Ricky Savchick
Yeah.
Barry Savchick
Yeah.
Mrs. Truffles
Was that the moment where you're like.
Barry Savchick
That was the moment. I was so head over heels for her already. I just.
Mrs. Truffles
It was your first date, but this is first date.
Barry Savchick
And when she said Italian dancer, it's like, yeah.
Mrs. Truffles
I have so much I want to know about the first kiss.
Mr. Truffles
Was it at the Elton John concert? When was it?
Barry Savchick
That would be. I mean, the three moments before the concert. The very first night, you hung out in my room and we just looked at my albums, and that was like. I was in heaven that night. But I think I was a perfect gentleman and just got you home.
Ricky Savchick
You did?
Barry Savchick
Yeah. We didn't kiss.
Ricky Savchick
You kissed me on, like, the cheek goodbye when you dropped me out of the dorm.
Barry Savchick
And then we kind of had that. The pub. We had a lunch. We met for lunch in town. And Amherst had a quaint little town, and we had a nice lunch. Nothing, I would guess. It was in the middle of the concert.
Ricky Savchick
It was. It was at the con. That was our first, like, make out jam session. Was at the concert, for sure.
Barry Savchick
Yeah.
Mr. Truffles
Was that before or after the Italian Dancer?
Barry Savchick
Oh, I don't. I think it had to be after, because in that moment, you're gone.
Ricky Savchick
Yeah. The car ride home, his two friends were driving in the front and we were in the back. And that was. Yeah, that was the. That was like the first.
Barry Savchick
That was the first. That had to be.
Ricky Savchick
That was. The concert was definitely the first. Makeup.
Mrs. Truffles
Sweet.
Ricky Savchick
So that was right before Thanksgiving break. And then we went home for Thanksgiving break, and I went to New Jersey and he went to Long Island.
Mrs. Truffles
You've Been on one date at this point?
Barry Savchick
No. Then we. After that, we just hung out.
Ricky Savchick
Oh, I kind of moved in.
Barry Savchick
Yeah. She moved in because we were off campus. We lived in a townhouse. We'd all be watching football. She would jump into my car, and she would go get us McDonald's or whatever.
Mrs. Truffles
Yeah.
Ricky Savchick
He would send me in his Camaro. His little black Camaro. He would get mad at me for moving the seat up, and his friends would all watch football, and they would send me out to, like. I would take, like, seven different orders from all of his friends.
Barry Savchick
It was marriage right there. Made in heaven. And so we.
Mrs. Truffles
And your friends were loving her, too.
Barry Savchick
Oh, my God. Oh, they're still our best. And then her friends became friends with my friends. It was just great. I mean, from that moment, we spent every. We just spent every second together. It was just. But you got to finish the story.
Ricky Savchick
So getting back to the newspapers.
Mrs. Truffles
Yeah.
Barry Savchick
In the library. Yes.
Ricky Savchick
My sister was kind of on it for me and did some research. She was. I think I got this figured out. So she comes in with me to the library one day. Very beautiful girl. She's wearing her leopard. Yes. Skinny jeans. That zipper up on the bottom with our, like, Reebok high tops. I walk in with her, and I kind of go up, and I was like, still have your jacket? He looks and he's like, is that your sister? And I was like, yeah. And then he goes, your sister is leopard woman. And I was like, why? Is she, like, an icon? He was like, kind of. Everybody at school knows her as the girl that wears the leopard.
Barry Savchick
Leopard.
Ricky Savchick
The leopard jeans. So that, to this day, is kind of a little joke between the two of them.
Barry Savchick
Well, the phone was ringing off the hook on Sunday mornings.
Ricky Savchick
On Sunday mornings, his phone kept ringing, and he would. I'd be like, who's calling? He'd be like, wait, this is true. Oh, it's my mother. It's my stepmother. It's my. He was running the UMass bookie service.
Barry Savchick
That was the newspapers. I was doing the lines.
Ricky Savchick
He was reading the sports sections. He was doing the lines.
Mrs. Truffles
You were running the book.
Barry Savchick
My buddy and I became Western Mass's biggest stop.
Mrs. Truffles
Us.
Barry Savchick
We got out of control.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh, my God.
Ricky Savchick
We were way richer at UMass in 1984. Let me. It was not just UMass. It was like, the five colleges.
Mrs. Truffles
No, the five families.
Barry Savchick
Yeah, the five families.
Ricky Savchick
And his mother was placing bets with him. No, she was the first call we would get.
Mrs. Truffles
Scary moments.
Barry Savchick
I talked her into betting partners. Yes. We just exploded. And Got really big and I was really paranoid. At some point we would drive every.
Mrs. Truffles
Other weekend not too far from Providence and.
Barry Savchick
No. Well, I was gonna say every other weekend. This is true. We drove. I had a partner. He was the money, I was the brains. And we just. We did it. And it was awesome. And we did well, obviously, but we would. If we got too much money on one game, we would lay it off with a real bookie in Boston.
Mrs. Truffles
Okay.
Barry Savchick
So every other weekend we would drive to Boston and either collect or pay off. But you know, it got. It got crazy. And then after about a year and a half, we shut it down.
Mrs. Truffles
This is before Venmo.
Barry Savchick
My very first roommate was a football player. Literally, my very first roommate at UMass was a football player. So I got really close with him and a lot of football players. So they would knock on doors if we had to and just scare. Nothing ever bad went down, but they would scare.
Ricky Savchick
And he would send me out for like breakfast and like, and I'm gonna go to the kick it store or the. No sweater store. These were like the big labels in the 80s. And I'd be like, can I have some money? I just need this ma.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh my God, that's so.
Barry Savchick
Yeah, she would Goodfellow me. But that's. Yeah, that was the origin story.
Mrs. Truffles
Were you ever a bookies wife or only a bookies girlfriend?
Ricky Savchick
Just a bookies girlfriend. I was never a bookies wife. Little backstory. I'm one of five sisters. My parents got married very young. Barry has a brother and a stepsister.
Barry Savchick
Half sister.
Ricky Savchick
Half sister. Sorry, sorry, Nikki. Half sister. Who we love. When we first met, you know, the beginning of college and sparks are flying and everything. I ended up at the UMass Infirmary a lot because I was getting continual bladder infections. I got really sick at one point. So they called my parents and they were like, you know, she's getting perpetual bladder infections. Maybe she needs to see a private doctor. So my mother comes up to UMass from New Jersey. She was got to check out what's going on. And she comes in to the infirmary and she's sitting bedside with me. And she was like, let me meet the guy Ricky, you know. Oh yeah. So he.
Mr. Truffles
So this is how he met your mother for the first time.
Barry Savchick
Oh yeah.
Ricky Savchick
How I met your mother. And again, I am from a loud New Jersey family of all girls. Nobody gets a word. And he is from this quite. His parents are divorced. He grew up in a bachelor's.
Barry Savchick
I grew up in a bachelor's pad. So I haven't Been around, really, a woman in a long time. And now I've got the five sisters, the mother, the grandmother and the aunt all hanging out together.
Ricky Savchick
And he was the first real boyfriend, besides our high school flings or whatever. My mother literally walks into the hospital, like the infirmary room, and I'm laying in the bed, and then Barry walks in and he's like, you know, hi, Mrs. Bernstein, nice to meet you. And she literally looks him dead in the eye, and she goes, this. This too much, fucky, fucky. And he literally just went, welcome to.
Mrs. Truffles
Episode 12 of the Love and Chocolate. The Book and the Urinary. Oh, that's.
Ricky Savchick
So that was the intro to My Mother.
Mr. Truffles
So you guys just kind of knew out the gate that this was Fire. Fire. That this was it.
Ricky Savchick
He did have a girlfriend.
Barry Savchick
We had to get rid of her.
Mrs. Truffles
You gotta leave town. But when you met her, you were still seeing this girl?
Barry Savchick
I still had a girlfriend. She was at bu. So it's not. She wasn't on campus. She was a high school girlfriend. And. Yeah, but I knew. I really knew.
Mr. Truffles
So how long until you broke up with the high school girlfriend?
Barry Savchick
No, it really wasn't long. It was long.
Mrs. Truffles
Was that your decision, or did Ricky say, listen, you need to lose her?
Barry Savchick
No, no. Ricky never interfered in any way, shape or form. That way.
Mrs. Truffles
It was something. She interfered by being fabulous.
Barry Savchick
Yes, that's true.
Mrs. Truffles
Right.
Barry Savchick
That's true, Ricky.
Ricky Savchick
You know, I kind of just waited it out. I knew it was real. It felt real. I felt like he was genuine.
Barry Savchick
It also didn't hurt. That leper woman came up to me and said, mess with my sister and I'll kill you.
Ricky Savchick
My sister. My sister.
Barry Savchick
That is true.
Ricky Savchick
Yeah.
Barry Savchick
So I was like, you know, all right, so first step would be to break up with the old girlfriend. Yeah, that's. Yeah, she was very protective.
Mr. Truffles
So how long until you met her father?
Barry Savchick
I don't know if it was that Thanksgiving. It was not that long after, but it was. When I say it was a harem, I mean, it was a family of women. You know, her dad, Mike, who's one of my favorite people in the world. One of the most interesting people I've ever met in my life. A true Renaissance man. But he knew back away, you know, he kept his distance from the gaggle of ladies.
Mrs. Truffles
But you formed a bond with him.
Barry Savchick
Oh, 1,000%, yeah. He was very. I mean, I am a sports fanatic. He had five daughters. He played basketball in college. He just. He didn't have that. So when I came in, and by the way, I mean, I'm a little guy, I'm five eight, he's six five. So he loved to take me out on the court and just kill me. Yeah, we bonded right away. It was nice.
Ricky Savchick
So Thanksgiving of 84, we both went home for Thanksgiving holidays. And I kind of said to my mom and dad, like, I'm pretty sure I'm going to marry this guy. It was pretty fast and furious for me. You know, Thanksgiving break back then in college was like a week or a two week break. We met up one night in the city at the Hard Rock. I, again, like, I was still 18, so, like, I had to get a ride. Yeah, he was there with his friends. They were all drinking and stuff. And then we took a walk to the ATM machine. Where was it?
Barry Savchick
I was a little drunk and I slipped that I love you, and I was so embarrassed that that slipped out. I kind of beat up the atm, but.
Ricky Savchick
Oh, yeah, he punched an atm and.
Barry Savchick
Yeah, but.
Mr. Truffles
So how did you. How did the slip happen? You just.
Barry Savchick
I don't remember again. We just.
Ricky Savchick
I remember.
Barry Savchick
You remember what I said?
Ricky Savchick
I mean, yeah, like, we were like, kissing and making out, and then I had to go. Like, my sister was waiting for. We were going back to New Jersey, and he was going. We were saying goodbye, and I was like, bye. I'm like, you know, how are you gonna stay on Long Island? When are you going back to school? He was like, no, I'll see you back at school. I love you. And I was like, what did you just say?
Mr. Truffles
And you scared yourself by saying that?
Barry Savchick
Oh, my God, yes. Yeah. I was petrified.
Mr. Truffles
So how long until you were comfortable saying it? Then?
Ricky Savchick
Then. Then, like, once we said it. No, and I. I remember that car ride home, like, telling my sister. I was like, he said, I love you. And I was like, it felt okay. It felt right. And then we went back to school after the holiday, and that's kind of when I moved in because he was off campus and I was a freshman, so I was on campus, but he had his own.
Mrs. Truffles
You moved in after just a few months of dating?
Barry Savchick
Just, you know, because you still had your place. Yeah. Yeah.
Mrs. Truffles
You were basically a dorm room.
Ricky Savchick
Yeah, I had a dorm room. He actually did stay an extra year of school and did, like a graduate year. And then we really did live together.
Mrs. Truffles
You're a sophomore year?
Barry Savchick
Yep.
Mrs. Truffles
Wow.
Barry Savchick
My first year out, she took an internship in the city. I was living in the city and she took an internship. So she was with me for one full semester. So we were. I Think it was probably just only a full year or so that we had to do the long distance.
Mrs. Truffles
So the year that you were in New York and she was.
Barry Savchick
Yep.
Ricky Savchick
Yeah.
Barry Savchick
That I still at school. And then the minute she graduated, she moved in.
Ricky Savchick
We got engaged that year because we got engaged when I was 22.
Mrs. Truffles
Well, so lead us to. Sure. Is that.
Mr. Truffles
Tell us that story. How did the engagement happen?
Barry Savchick
So we, you know, at that point, we had a big group of friends.
Mrs. Truffles
And you're living together now?
Barry Savchick
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We had a basement apartment.
Ricky Savchick
We lived next door to a chip family.
Barry Savchick
She had an internship up at fox, which was 67th and second. So we found an apartment right there because that was her first job out. So this way she was right on the same block. So it was not pretty, but it worked for the two of us.
Ricky Savchick
Barry, if he didn't mention, is a big hockey fan and also hockey player. And we had a basement apartment. We were next door to a family of two gypsies. They had a studio apartment, 11 kids and their gypsy mama who would read my palm and tarot cards for me all the time. In between us, we had a laundry room. The laundry room was rat infested. More than once, Barry would come home to me standing on top of our little, like, naked bed, screaming.
Mrs. Truffles
Would she get up their clothes and take her.
Barry Savchick
No. She got out of the shower one time, I remember.
Ricky Savchick
Out of the shower. And the rats would like. And he would go pick up his hockey sticks and chase the rats around while I scream naked on the back.
Mr. Truffles
Hockey.
Ricky Savchick
We were only in that apartment for a while sometimes. Wait, I'm gonna blow your mind. Do you remember her name? The Gypsy?
Barry Savchick
No.
Mrs. Truffles
What?
Ricky Savchick
Dana.
Barry Savchick
Dana.
Ricky Savchick
Sometimes Dana the Gypsy would read Barry's palms too. But most of the time she would call him over to help with the rats that were in his hockey stick. Yeah. Barry the exterminator. Bookie. Exterminator. There's gotta be a man wears many hats. We were living in that apartment.
Barry Savchick
We were living in that apartment. We had a really close group of friends together at this point. And the very first couple got married Thanksgiving weekend, 1988. And I knew that this was. This was gonna be it. So I figured we'd all be together, all our friends. One weekend before that date, I went to. Back then, we had to go to sports bars to watch all the football games because they were the only ones that had satellites. We had a bar that we always went to. And I was with all my close friends. And I said, I think at Mark's wedding. I'm gonna ask Ricky to marry me. I planned the whole thing out. So my friends were really excited and they wanted to contribute. So I. I wrote to Mr. Dennis Elsitz, who is still on satellite radio, on Classic Rewind or one of those stations. We still hear him. I always joke that here's the guy that killed my life. But I wrote to him and I told him the story. I said, we're gonna be in a limo with a group of people coming home from a wedding at around 2am on Saturday, whatever it was at Thanksgiving. I said, is there any chance that you could dedicate your song or was it your song or any Elton John song?
Ricky Savchick
It was your.
Barry Savchick
To Barry and Ricky. My dad, who I told the story to, he actually have a cassette of it. He recorded it for us. I mean, again, it's the end of our very first couple getting married. We're all in a very good mood. We're all in the limo. There were four couples in total. The song comes on. He says, this goes out from Barry to Ricky. She's like, what? I get down on my knee in the limo. In the limo with the other couples. I ask her to marry me. We have photos. One of my friends brought flowers. One of my friends brought champagne. The other one brought a camera.
Mrs. Truffles
Wow.
Barry Savchick
So we had it all. We get back to the city. It's now about 3am at our apartment with the rats were her sisters. And we all went back with my friends. We partied till about 6am I said, we're not staying in this apartment tonight. We just got engaged and we went to a hotel. As we're getting into the hotel, all the marching bands for the Thanksgiving Day parade were exiting to go to their place. We went upstairs, slept for about three hours because she had to go to work that day. So I had Thanksgiving without her. But we were officially engaged. So that's how we did it.
Mrs. Truffles
And you got pictures?
Barry Savchick
Yeah, we have pictures. I have pictures of her in the moment.
Mrs. Truffles
Totally shocked.
Ricky Savchick
I was totally, completely shocked. And all of my sisters knew, which to this day, it's probably the only, like, surprise we've ever kept from each other. Definitely had no idea we were getting engaged.
Mrs. Truffles
How soon after was the.
Barry Savchick
Exactly a year. Thanksgiving to Thanksgiving.
Mrs. Truffles
Wow. New York.
Barry Savchick
Morristown, New Jersey.
Ricky Savchick
My mother at the time owned a company called the Total Affair. My mom was like a event planner.
Mr. Truffles
Oh.
Ricky Savchick
Of New Jersey. And I was the first of the five sisters.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh, my God.
Ricky Savchick
And we had the wedding of the century at a New Jersey landmark hotel where'd we get married.
Barry Savchick
Headquarters Plaza. Well, I knew we were getting interviewed, so I studied.
Ricky Savchick
So how Headquarters Plaza, which is like a hotel that presidents stay at. It's a very like 89.
Barry Savchick
89.
Ricky Savchick
Okay, 89. We probably knew.
Barbara
Yeah.
Barry Savchick
There were about 350 people at the wedding. I knew 14. We were getting there because of her business. She invited so many people.
Mrs. Truffles
Because of your mom's business.
Barry Savchick
Yeah. Wow. It was a party. It was awesome.
Ricky Savchick
And it was a hotel. So all of our friends who are young. Cause we were in our 20s, we just got them all hotel rooms to stay over. So everybody. Everybody glitzed out of their mind. It went on all night. It was.
Barry Savchick
Funny story though. So all my friends from Boston, we went to UMass. So half my friends were now from New York and half were from Boston. So my bachelor party was the Wednesday night of Thanksgiving. Oh, all right. And all my friends came in. So on Thanksgiving, all my friends from out of town had really nowhere to go. So Ricky's Aunt Lo always had Thanksgiving. She said, bring as many people as you want.
Mrs. Truffles
Yeah, yeah.
Barry Savchick
So we all show up after, no sleep, crazy night. For some reason, Aunt Lola that Thanksgiving chose not to serve turkey, but to serve prune chicken.
Mrs. Truffles
What?
Barry Savchick
Yes, yes. So my friends did not take to that. Not that they were upset or at. But their stomachs. It was a little tough to take. So, yeah, we had a lot of miserable drunk.
Mrs. Truffles
The prune chicken Jagermeister.
Barry Savchick
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So. But it was a. The whole weekend was just a big party.
Mrs. Truffles
Had this incredible wedding. 350 of, well, 14 of your closest friends in Ricky's mom's family.
Ricky Savchick
Right, People just coming up. Hi, bubala. I haven't seen you since you were 4 years old. Like, I had no idea who anybody was, but they all came with nice envelopes. So.
Mrs. Truffles
Wedding of the century. And then where was the limon?
Barry Savchick
Just a long weekend at Key West. She was working at Fox and we. And she had just, you know, she didn't get all the time off. So we took a long weekend down at Key west, had an amazing time, and said we would do something special down the road. And neither one of us really cared. We were just really happy.
Ricky Savchick
And Key west was, by the way, Key west was like fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. We did all kinds of snorkeling and helicopter rides and we ate like kings and queens. And I miss it to this day. I'm like, I want to go back to the family.
Barry Savchick
That's so fun. We moved out of that apartment and we moved into A much nicer place that truly felt like home. So we were just happy to be done with the wedding. It was a blast. The weekend was just, you know, so memorable. We were just happy to go back home. And then we just took the long weekend down to Key west, and that was it.
Ricky Savchick
We did eventually get out of the country.
Barry Savchick
We did. I forced her to go to the 92 Winter Olympics so I could see hockey in France.
Mr. Truffles
That sounds fantastic.
Barry Savchick
So we did. We did. We flew into Munich, we drove through Zurich and went to the French Alps. And while I was watching all these incredible sports, she ate more crepes than I. She'd be indoors by a fire, eating crepes. Just so happy.
Ricky Savchick
Best hot chocolate. And then we did do hockey games for him, and then I made him go toured the Swiss Alps where the hills were alive because I'm a big musical theater girl. So we toured the Swiss Alps.
Mr. Truffles
So now you guys have been married for 34 years. You guys are just obviously still very in love. So how do you guys keep it fresh and fantastic? Like, what's your little secret ingredient?
Barry Savchick
I know mine. People do ask, and my answer honestly is we give each other space. You learn after being together for so long, Look. Look to the day I die. There's no one I'd rather just be across from the table with. In fact, my kids say I'm antisocial because all I really want to do is go to a movie and dinner with her. That's just who I am. And it just makes me very happy. I love my sports. There are certain shows that I love that I want to watch, and it's okay for me to be downstairs watching my show and taking an hour, and Ricky being upstairs watching her show. We learned over the years that you want a guy's weekend, you want a weekend with the girl, you just. You gotta go do it. Because we're together, but we're still separate people. We still have different interests. And so we've always, I felt, given each other space to do those things.
Ricky Savchick
For me, definitely. Nobody makes me laugh the way he makes me laugh. We get each other. There are just certain moments where we can look at each other and we know. Even if we're laughing about our kids or, you know, just like, random moments outside of the house where you don't want to say something out loud and you can just exchange that, you know? Yeah, definitely laughter. Definitely food. We're both foodies, Definitely love to eat together. And, you know, it's a big part of life, so you got to enjoy that we have three kids. Kids are a journey. Trying to feel like they're okay is definitely something that bonds us.
Barry Savchick
Ricky mentioned we're both in the same business and we do very different things, but we really enjoy being in the same business. We lean on each other, we ask each other for advice. And there's something special. I mean, you know, right now, especially after my show got canceled, you know, I'm working out of the house. Ricky spends some time working out of the house, and we'll sit there across from the table. You know, even though we have an office, we kind of sit at the kitchen table and we do our thing and it's just. It's very pleasant. Yeah.
Mrs. Truffles
So 34 years in, kind of looking at the landscape, this beautiful mural that you guys have created of your lives, what would you tell young couples coming up that are figuring it out?
Mr. Truffles
What's your best advice? What would you tell your daughters?
Barry Savchick
Hmm, that's a good question. I mean, one of the other things that worked for us too, is that we got married young but didn't have children for quite a while. We really. People ask me all the time, best years of your life. I go, oh, my 20s, I was in New York with Ricky, alone, friends. We had all that time together. We came out to LA. I was 30, and it was still, you know, new life, new world. And we were able to kind of get our feet under us, get our legs under us, before we had children, and we're able to kind of set up our lives, I guess.
Mr. Truffles
So you think it's. It's nice to have a little utilization.
Barry Savchick
I mean, again, it worked for us. I mean, you know, so we've talked.
Mrs. Truffles
We'Re wait to have children now.
Ricky Savchick
You guys look ready. Yeah, I. I think for me, I mean, look, every marriage is going to ebb and flow, right? I think the thing I've learned, kind of learning how to let go of things in a sense of like you're in a marriage, you're gonna mess things, somebody's gonna screw things up somewhere down the line. We all have little habits that we don't like. I'm a messier person than Barry. Yeah, like. Like little things that, you know, I guess being open about those things, having a sense of humor, but so maybe just kind of learning to, to let go.
Mr. Truffles
That's good advice. Very good advice.
Ricky Savchick
And sometimes you can't do it on your own, but, you know, you might have to talk to other people or. I think it's sort. I think it's sort of important in Every relationship.
Barry Savchick
Sure.
Mr. Truffles
So we have a little portion of the program that we like to do, and it's called a romantic weekend in a bag.
Mrs. Truffles
Oh, this one's got some heft.
Mr. Truffles
This usually turns out to be of a little romantic walk down memory lane for people. So we like to send you off with this bag of romantic goodies. Yeah. So every romantic weekend needs a really fine bottle of fancy French champagne. This is the Pat a fruit. Are you familiar with that?
Ricky Savchick
I've never had.
Mr. Truffles
Oh, good.
Ricky Savchick
I've never had. These remind me very much of my Papa Jack. He was very much a gel. These are like the fruit gels.
Barry Savchick
Right.
Mr. Truffles
They're made from our Toyscher jam. So they're each a flavor of the different jams.
Barry Savchick
Oh, wow.
Ricky Savchick
Yeah, that looks.
Barry Savchick
You're gonna be into that candle.
Mr. Truffles
Just a fun little romantic candle that you could set the mood with.
Ricky Savchick
Yummy.
Mrs. Truffles
This is Mrs. Truffles Body Butter.
Mr. Truffles
It's got all the best things for your skin.
Mrs. Truffles
Okay. This is our Lake of Zurich box.
Ricky Savchick
See, in one of the places we've been to out of the country.
Mrs. Truffles
And this is our greatest hits. This has got.
Mr. Truffles
That's our best collection.
Mrs. Truffles
It's got pralines. It's got dipped fruits.
Barry Savchick
Oh, yeah.
Mr. Truffles
There's a little bit of everything. This is a fragrance, and it is to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Hollywood sign.
Barry Savchick
Oh, wow.
Mr. Truffles
So it's made.
Ricky Savchick
Oh, it's a Hollywood sign. 100 years old.
Mr. Truffles
Yeah, it's 100 years old. And so they made this fragrance to commemorate it.
Ricky Savchick
I think this is mine too. You guys are so beautiful. Thank you so much.
