And all Rothy's are sustainably knit from recycled plastic bottles. Plus, when they get really dirty, you can just throw them in the wash.
Elise Hu
I didn't know that. Okay, I can't wait to try that out.
Dori Shafrier
Yes, I like, I feel like all shoes should be washable, but they're not, so I'm glad Rothy's are. I've already washed mine a couple times. And after they're dry, it's like they're brand new. They're still soft and easy to wear and clean. Like day one. Rothy's make so many stylish shoes. From flats to sandals, they're spotted everywhere for a reason. Discover the world of Rothys@rothys.com that's R O T H Y S dot com. Hello and welcome to Forever 35, a podcast about the things we do to take care of ourselves. I'm Dory Shafrier.
Elise Hu
And I'm Elise Hu. And we're just two friends who like to talk a lot about serums.
Dori Shafrier
And this is our newly renamed you ask, we answer episode. A full length Episode where we respond to your questions, your comments, your feedback. These used to be called mini episodes. They were shorter. We're now doing them as full length episodes every other week and trading off with our regular full length episodes. So hopefully you like this longer format. We like the longer format because it lets us kind of get into things a little bit more. So.
Elise Hu
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dori Shafrier
Elise, how's it going?
Elise Hu
It's going pretty well. By the time you'll hear this episode, I am going to be in Phoenix on the surface of the sun.
Dori Shafrier
Yep.
Elise Hu
It's not advisable to be in Phoenix at the end of June.
Dori Shafrier
No.
Elise Hu
But I will be there for a volleyball tournament.
Dori Shafrier
And
Elise Hu
we are. We're gonna leave the house. Even though my beloved cat, my tuxedo cat Abe, has been on the lamb. He's been missing for five days now. We have no idea why. It's a huge mystery. There have been coyotes in my neighborhood, and he's an indoor outdoor cat.
Dori Shafrier
Don't love that.
Elise Hu
Do not love it. I saw a coyote just running up the street that the school is on. On my way to pick up the kids from school.
Dori Shafrier
Oh, my gosh.
Elise Hu
Just like in broad daylight, just running up the street, like, as happy as can be. Like a little puppy. And I was just like, this doesn't feel good for any small animals on the block. No, but that's a few blocks away. And then Abe usually never leaves our backyard. And he's very smart. He's a brilliant cat. He loves to play fetch. He can open doors with his face. He comes when called. He always comes when called, which is why it's very strange that he wouldn't be home. He sleeps at home. He spends most of his day at home. He just, like, is allowed to go in the backyard, and he uses the dog door to do it. And we have been out of town for, like, two weeks at a time. And he never leaves the house. You know, he's, like, at home. Wow. So it's really strange that on Friday night, he just didn't come home. And the only unusual circumstances are that my parents are staying here. So we have two extra people. And then on Friday mornings, the cleaning ladies are here, so that's another two extra people. And then we were hosting a play date, so there was one extra person. So there were five extra people on top of our normal five, the usual five who lived here. And so it was double the humans. I'm thinking Abe might have been like, peace out. Yeah, I'm getting out of here for the day. What's so strange is that he did not come home.
Dori Shafrier
He didn't come back. Yeah.
Elise Hu
And on Saturday, I noticed that he hadn't eaten any of his food. And he always, you know, he just reliable. He's one of those. We feed. We just leave a full bowl of dry food for him at all times because he doesn't finish it all. And this is a. He just. He doesn't. You know, it's like Oscar, if we feed him, food's gone within 30 seconds. But Abe is a grazer. He'll just come and eat a little bit and then leave, you know? And he's been with us since 2019. He's probably my smartest cat. I've had cats since, like 2004. He's. He's awesome. You know, I've talked about Abe a lot.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah.
Listener/Caller
And.
Elise Hu
And we've gotten him the Kitty Izakaya. So we have his Kitty Izakaya restaurant out in the. And where he's a sushi chef. It's like a house, you know, where he can stick his face out of it. We put it in the Forever 35 gift guide so he looks like he' a sushi chef when he sticks his face out of it. It's just so awesome. And on Saturday, when I. Saturday morning, when I noticed he hadn't eaten his food, I realized that he still hadn't come home. And then I started panicking. And we have been going up and down the block. We put posters up. I posted in all the forums next door, Facebook, la la la, all the, you know, pet company, pet search things. But I just don't think Abe would be too far, you know. And so by Sunday or Monday, when he was still gone, I got really sad because I thought for sure something awful had happened to him for him to come home. And we were just despondent all day long. But since Issa was home and not at a camp, we were like, okay, let's go. Leave quarter sheets. And this is like a full family activity. Maddie designed posters. He copied all the quarter sheets for us. Rob has been talking to every neighbor that he can, but then also discovering that some of our neighbors are a real mystery. And I'll add more to that. I'll add more to that in a bit because. So Sunday night after I'm pretty down, Rob and I have to take Ava to a team bonding thing for her volleyball team on Manhattan Beach. The girls are playing queen of the court on the beach, and me and two of my volleyball mom friends are talking, and I'm like, Telling them about Abe. And one of them says, oh, I'm sure he's just out like on a rum Springer. He's just having a good time. He just decided to, like, go out, maybe have sex and just have a good time. And I'm like, I don't know about that. He's neutered, so I don't think he's out on the prowl, per se.
Dori Shafrier
Totally.
Elise Hu
And the other one goes, have you contacted a pet medium? And I thought, what? And she goes, there's this really big deal pet medium here in Manhattan beach that a friend of mine hired for a pretty penny. She works with the FBI and local law enforcement agencies. She's one of those mediums. And like, Jessica Alba is going to produce a show with her because she's such a big deal medium. And this mom friend's friend hired her and recounted that the medium said that their golden retriever wanted them to get another dog, which was very surprising information because they're like, my dog wants to meet, wants to have another dog. Like, he's been with us for eight years, right? And he's been alone. Like, suddenly he wants another dog. Weird. And. But because they trusted the medium, they got another dog from a rescue. And not more than six months later, the golden retriever gets diagnosed with a terminal cancer and has to and dies. And they were like, oh, my God, we're so glad that the medium told us that. Or like, got that message out of the dark. Isn't that uncanny? And so, I mean, it could have been a coincidence. You know, all these psychics also say, like, we're here for entertainment purposes only, but there is another realm, Right. That we can't reach. And I'm curious about it and have always wanted to try and get closer to it. And so I researched the medium, the Manhattan beach medium. And she was. Seemed very expensive. So I was like, can't do that.
Listener/Caller
Right.
Elise Hu
I went back to the Manhattan beach mom friend, and she was like, oh, but there's same day psychic readings that you can get on Etsy. Just try some of those. She's like, I'm impatient. I would do the same day ones. And so I got two separate. I paid for two separate same day readings on Monday, and I got one on Monday night. And it said, I have a very strong feeling. My strong sense is that Abe is alive. He's not even injured. He's alive. What gave me comfort was that she said he was alive.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah.
Elise Hu
Because my greatest fear was that he had some sort of violent death and which I thought was incredulous anyway, because he's so fast, like I can't even catch him to put him in a cat carrier to go to the vet, you know? So, like, I just don't think a dumb coyote would get him. Unless it was a pack of coyotes or something.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Elise Hu
Anyway, so. So I got that reading Monday night, and not an hour later, a neighbor who has never called me before called me and was like, hi, my name is Sheri. I live on, you know, my street. And. Cause she didn't know where the missing cat was from, but she named my street and she's like. And this is my address. And I just saw a black and white cat on my back fence. And they jumped over into my backyard's backyard. So, like the adjoining backyard from the house on the other street, you know. Cause the backyard's kind of butt each other. And so. And she was like, I've never seen cats in my yard before. But then I remembered there was that little sheet on my house, and it looked just like your black and white cat. It looked at me. I just didn't come. When I tried to get it to come, I didn't know its name. And I just said, hey, kitty. And it just jumped over the other fence. I was like, holy crap, that's probably Abe. And then we had like this burst of faith, and we went over to that house that the yard was connected to, and they let us in. And we looked around and somebody in who was renting the back house, the ADU, which in LA, there's a bunch of ADUs, additional dwelling units. She was like, oh, we have a camera so we could put a bowl of food out here and maybe see if we can catch them on the camera. And so I put food out there Monday night. And on Tuesday morning, she texted me and she was like, somebody came and ate the food. I think Abe came. And what was crucial was that they didn't eat all of the food. It was kind of grazed because I also left food at my house. I left food on my front porch, thinking maybe it could draw Abe. And that food just got cleaned out. So that was clearly like a possum or another dog that was unleashed, you know, because it wasn't a. I don't think that's how Abe eats.
Listener/Caller
Yeah.
Elise Hu
And so this was interesting in that it was like half of a saucer of food was eaten. So I was like, oh. But then she goes, the camera didn't catch him. And now she's disappeared completely. Now I was like, Because I checked in with her the next day today, and I'm like, did you catch anything? Because I went and put more food over there. And she just didn't even respond. And so now I'm just like, okay. And I was really upset about that. That's my latest. And then Rob was like, well, this one neighbor can't be the linchpin to finding Abe. Or not. Like, if Abe is that close. Oh, I did. I left out the fact that he. It's only three doors down. It's like three houses down and in the other backyard. Right. So. And they're pretty big backyards, I guess. But Rob was like. It just begs the question of if he is three houses down and in the backyard on the other side, like, why he wouldn't find his way home? Why wouldn't he just come? So he either doesn't want to come home, the cat sighting wasn't Abe, or he can't get home. Like, there's too many obstructions to getting back here. But we won't know unless we see him. It certainly removed the grief of thinking that he was dead. Like, I didn't want him to be gone. But if he is out living his best life somewhere, which. The second psychic reading also came in and said, I sense that Abe is very much alive.
Dori Shafrier
Okay. So we have two psychics in agreement.
Elise Hu
Two Etsy psychics.
Dori Shafrier
Two Etsy psychics. Well, I hope that the next update I get from you is a good one.
Elise Hu
Me too. Otherwise, we just have to live with not knowing.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah. Which sucks.
Elise Hu
Yeah.
Dori Shafrier
All right, Elise, before we take a break, we got this comment in our Patreon chat, and I asked the person who wrote it for permission to use it on the main. On this main episode, and she said yes. But I don't know if you remember in our recent. A recent episode, I said that I had a friend who was teaching high school and that it was sort of like a truth universally acknowledged that the. The great. The group. The cohort of kids who just finished 10th grade. So just finished their sophomore year in high school, are, like, out of control.
Elise Hu
Right? Because. Because it might be because of them
Dori Shafrier
when Covid hit them.
Elise Hu
Starting puberty during COVID year or something.
Dori Shafrier
So there's something. There is something about this cohort of kids. And I was like, is this true? Like, are other people seeing this? Or is this just the case that, like, this one high school, or, like, what's going on here? So this listener wrote, had to jump here immediately. 15 minutes into today's pod. Dory, the 10th grade class in my town is horrible. And that is in all caps with multiple exclamation points. I'm not a parent, but I have a contract with the school district and work with the administrators, so I have some insight to issues. I also know the parent of a 10th grader who has been navigating multiple issues of bullying towards her son. They are absolutely out of control in so many ways. Some I can't even get into here. I thought it was just us, but maybe this age group is a thing like you said.
Elise Hu
Wow. Yeah. Wow. Well, yeah, we'll have to see if there's more. More patterns that emerge.
Dori Shafrier
I know. I mean, I feel like I might
Elise Hu
have sounds like a slate piece.
Dori Shafrier
I might have just unearthed something for some enterprising researcher who is not me. We also have another great sponsored segment from our friends at Deep Pop. So we're going to transition to that right now and then we will come back.
Elise Hu
Okay, talk to you soon.
Dori Shafrier
Now it's time for our Find of the month segment, brought to you by our friends over at Depop. Elise, do you have a Depop find of the month?
Elise Hu
Yeah, it's actually a find of the week, which could be my find of the month.
Dori Shafrier
Okay.
Elise Hu
I have been looking for a Sherpa jacket, like a sort of cropped ish, a shorter Sherpa jacket that's warm, that zips, maybe like a big collar that I can wear at volleyball tournaments because they're so. It's so freezing in the gyms that it doesn't matter if it's like June or July. I'm still gonna need something very warm but also cute and not like a major ski parka, which I've tried to wear, or a winter coat, which is too formal. So I was looking for one on Vuori that another mom had because I was just gonna kind of like single white fema. But the one that I found wasn't like the right color for my skin. So I ended up finding one like a Sherpa jacket from Lululemon. I'll hold it up for you.
Dori Shafrier
Ooh, cute.
Elise Hu
Yeah. And it's in excellent condition. I got it. It's cream and white and I got it for such a low, low cost compared to how much it must have retailed for. So that's my find of the month. I'm super excited for it. I love all the brands that are available on Depop and how we can just go on and search for a very specific item like Sherpa jacket cropped. Yes. And a bevy of Choices will show up.
Dori Shafrier
Well, I have to tell you also, you know, I think the whole idea around Depop is like your personal taste has value and someone else out there wants what you have chosen. I had a really cute dress from this like French clothing brand, but it didn't really fit and I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna sell it. And I posted it on Depop and within a week someone had bought it. I shipped it off to Florida the other day.
Elise Hu
Oh, good.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah, it's really nice. Like, I just love this feeling that my clothes are finding a second life with someone else.
Elise Hu
And it's, it's an opportunity to connect with people too while you're rehoming these old pieces. Because, yeah, sometimes there's a bit of a back and forth as a seller, as you know, I like to sell on and I have real, I have real good sales luck with a lot of Ava's clothes, you know, because I guess Ava is cooler than me and she has the cool jeans and everything and people want, people ask like, hey, what's the inseam? Or can you try it on? And post a photo. And so there's, there's like a whole other human on the other end of the transaction and it feels really personal and nice. And so now anytime I've done the hard work of a closet clean out, which I need to do more often, I can just head to Depop and list everything. The process really is so quick and simple, as you have found.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah, it's super easy. Yeah.
Elise Hu
And it's always so rewarding to make a sale.
Listener/Caller
Right.
Elise Hu
And to see somebody buy a piece that I previously loved and now know that it's going to someone who's actually going to value it on the other end as much as I previously.
Dori Shafrier
So download the Depop app and list your first item in seconds. It's so easy and a great way to make money easily with no selling fees. Thank you, depop, for making this branded segment possible. Also, we have these kind of fun reels on our Instagrams that are sponsored by depop and they're really cool. You get to see like what we've been buying and they were really fun to do. I am sort of camera shy, so it was, you know, it was a big leap for me to do these.
Elise Hu
I haven't seen your latest one yet. Okay.
Dori Shafrier
I can't wait to see Matt. Also, Matt's been editing them, so.
Elise Hu
So it's been a husband wife content collab.
Listener/Caller

Elise Hu
A non depop break.
Dori Shafrier
A non depop break. And we will be right back.
Elise Hu
Okay. We'll be right back. Paying close attention to my finances has never been something I want to do and I've talked about that on this show. It makes me feel restricted in a way that feels bad to me. I am an Aquarian after all. But I have to know a certain amount, right? How else can I plan any vacations and not worry about whether I can actually afford it? Monarch has been the perfect middle ground of knowing what's going on but not micromanaging. So now I can enjoy my summer knowing my money is taken care of. Monarch is the personal finance app that tracks everything, accounts, investments, saving goals and spending. Get your first year of Monarch Core for half off just $50 with promo code F35. Monarch is really helping me catch some spending spikes before they become problems. And there's also diagrams to help you visualize exactly where your money goes each month. And then there's also an investment view that I think is really helpful to help compare my portfolio to what's happening on the overall S P500. The real difference here is that most other apps only tell you what you've already spent. Monarch helps set goals, map out big purchases, see if you're actually on track. This is like magic to me, like having a little eight ball into the next couple of months and realizing I am on or off track for whatever goal at the moment. I really like the AI weekly recap. It can flag spending spikes, net worth shifts and upcoming expenses that have saved me a time or 2. Use code F35@monarch.com to get your first year of Monarch Core half off at just $50. That's 50% off your first year at monarch.com with code F35. This year's girls trip to Telluride was the best.

Dori Shafrier
All right, we are back and we have an email from someone who has advice for the listener who was thinking about moving from their high cost of living area. Do you remember this?
Elise Hu
Yes, yes.
Dori Shafrier
Do you want to read this email?
Elise Hu
Sure. Hi there. This is in response to the caller about moving from Boston. I moved from Boston to North Carolina with the idea of saving a lot of money due to similar things to the caller listed. And I would love to encourage the caller to do their homework and have a friend who loves math crunch the numbers to make sure it will work out for you. Everyone encouraged me to move south and that it was cheaper. I made the move several years ago and my cost of living stayed exactly the same. I am a fairly frugal person, but it truly did not change my finances as much as I hoped. I think in many states it's more about where in the state you live, so it may not change your financial situation as much as you would hope unless you really find the right place. In fact, some jobs do pay more in places like Boston and pay less if they feel you are no Longer in a high cost of living area. Despite all the evidence you are. Most jobs in my state don't pay as much and don't compensate if you are in a higher cost area of that state. I also have to drive all the time instead of taking the train half the time. So car upkeep and increased gas expenses is something I didn't consider. We were able to use one car in Boston and tried to keep it that way here, but had to get a second car eventually. One thought is, have you considered the south coast or farther out in western Massachusetts, leaving you closest to family, but maybe a little cheaper. Good luck to you. I hope you find the right place.
Dori Shafrier
I mean, that's a really good point.
Elise Hu
Yeah. The place within the state. Not just the state.
Dori Shafrier
Well, but also just like the hidden costs of moving somewhere quote unquote cheaper. Like I feel like I've seen all these people saying how they moved to Texas and they weren't expecting like their property taxes to be so high. You know, there's like, sometimes there's things about other places that at first you think, oh, you know, this is, this is going to be. We're going to save so much money. But then there are these hidden costs, like you need a second car or it's a longer commute or, you know, just like other things.
Elise Hu
Yep.
Dori Shafrier
So good. Good point. Thank you. Thank you, listener. All right. We also got a voicemail about boob reduction surgery.
Listener/Caller
Hey, Elise. And door. I am wondering if anybody has had a breast reduction surgery and if they have any tips for recovery. I am getting one done in a week and insurance is covering all of it, which is amazing. And have chatted with some people but would love to. I just was so inspired by the really specific and amazing advice on the, the knee or the hip surgery that someone gave. It's like such incredible advice. I thought it would be worth a call to see if anybody's had a breast reduction surgery. My boobs are a double H, hoping to go down to about a D. And I've heard it can be life changing and I've wanted it one for my whole life, ever since high school. And now that I'm done having kids, I'm just really excited to take care of myself on this stage of my journey now that my mammary glands are purely ornamental. Thanks for all you two do and the lovely community you've created.
Dori Shafrier
Okay, so I have not had a breast reduction surgery, but I do have a couple of friends who have and they actually know each other. So I texted them Together. And I asked them for some advice about what this listener should do. The first, and I know this listener was asking for advice about recovery, but they did have, before I get to recovery, they did have a couple of, like, pre surgery pieces of advice that I do want to share. The first is to look up actual pictures of boobs and send them to the doctor. They're like, yes, you'll be googling pictures of boobs, but it's important to, like, get a sense of, like, what the size you're asking for and the shape you you're asking for actually looks like. Because they both said they wish they had gone smaller. Hmm. And that when you are in a double H, a D might seem small. And my friend said, I highly recommend looking at pics. Really make sure you're getting the size you want. And then my other friend asked, is she getting just getting a reduction or a reduction and a lift? And they said, definitely get the lift also. So those are the pre surgery pieces of advice. Consider going smaller and look at pictures and make sure you and your doctor are on the same page. Because one of my friends said that her doctor did not like even what she wanted. Her doctor did not go small enough and she was kind of upset about it. So. And then for recovery, they both said you have to sleep sitting kind of upright. So one of them said that they had rented a La Z boy easy chair for a month and she slept in it for the first week or two and said it was like, amazing. And now she wants a lazy boy, like, for her life. And then also if you don't, if you don't get a lazy boy, just, you know, definitely get a good upright pillow with arms and a lot of supports. The pillows that I think we used to call husbands for some reason. Okay. No, I didn't.
Elise Hu
I didn't even know about this.
Dori Shafrier
Maybe it was like sleep away camp thing. But yeah, we called them husbands, which now in retrospect is like a little weird and creepy. Um, another piece of advice was you'll. You'll need button downs for the days after when you can't lift your arms over your head. And then one of them said her doctor recommended putting sunflower oil and then biocorneum scar removal on the scars two times a day after a couple weeks when everything had healed. So those are my friend suggestions.
Elise Hu
Great.
Dori Shafrier
I'm sure our listeners have other thoughts and suggestions, so please let us know. And congratulations on taking this step. This is exciting.
Elise Hu
Yeah.
Dori Shafrier
Okay, Elise, do you want to read this next text?
Elise Hu
Okay. Our next text says, recently started swimming laps at the pool indoor and loving it. Looking for hair and skincare wrecks for chlorine. I have a swim cap, but my hair still gets wet and it is a little uncomfortable, so have been using a hairband just to keep hair out of my face door. You grew up swimming, spending a lot of time in swimming pools. So did your sister.
Dori Shafrier
I.
Elise Hu
Did you have any tried and true classics?
Dori Shafrier
Well, I was trying to remember the name of the shampoo that we all used, and I just googled it, and it is Ultra Swimming.
Elise Hu
Ultra Swim.
Dori Shafrier
Yes. There's a shampoo called Ultra Swim that is a chlorine removal shampoo. So you have to get either this or something similar because even if you're wearing a bathing cap, your hair is going to absorb chlorine. So you have to get a shampoo that is going to remove the chlorine. Now, you know you're also supposed to shower before you get in the pool, and that's both to, like, rinse yourself off, but I guess also if you wet your hair. And then some people also say to put leave in conditioner in your hair before you get in the pool. It makes your hair less likely to absorb the chlorine.
Elise Hu
I didn't know that, but okay. Yeah, I like that.
Dori Shafrier
So. And then there's also. There's also, I think, like, a body wash. Um, yeah, there are some body washes for chlorine removal. Your skin is gonna get super dry from the chlorine, so you do really need to make sure that you shower with something specifically formulated to remove chlorine.
Elise Hu
Okay.
Dori Shafrier
Um, those are my biggest pieces of advice. I don't swim as much anymore, so. So, yeah, I. I don't have any, like, more specific advice, but maybe people here do. Um, also, I'm glad you're swimming indoors. You know, something that is tough here in California is, like, most of the pools are outdoors. There are some indoor pools, but, like, if you. If you're, like, on a swim team, you're mostly swimming outside, which is, like, a lot of sun exposure.
Elise Hu
Yep, yep. Don't I know.
Dori Shafrier
Speaking of sun exposure, we got a voicemail where someone was asking about some sunscreen wrecks.
Elise Hu
Hi, Dori and Elise. I'm calling from New Jersey, where we're about to head into summer very soon.
Dori Shafrier
I wanted a recommendation.
Elise Hu
My beloved supergoop Moose sunscreen has been discontinued. I heard the FDA discontinued all Moose sunscreens because they weren't short of the effectiveness. I found it extremely effective, especially after my kids come out of the water at the beach when they have sand on them. I was able to lightly dry them off, and then I could put the Moose sunblock on them, and they never got burnt, so that was extremely helpful.
Dori Shafrier
My kids are older now.
Listener/Caller
They're.
Elise Hu
They're 10 and 8. But I still need recommendations on what to do at the beach when you have sandy, damply, wet child and you need to reapply sunblock. So any advice on products or strategies that you guys have would be greatly appreciated.
Dori Shafrier
Okay. I did not know that the Supergoop Moose had been discontinued, but I was wondering why I didn't see it at the store lately. I also liked the Supergoop mousse, so that's a bummer. I bought the super Goop. I had the play, which is like their sport line. I had the play mousse, so I bought the play lotion instead. And I do like the lotion. I like a lotion better than a spray because I feel like a spray, you're not really getting the coverage that you actually need. Like, most people don't put on enough spray. Also, aerosols are bad, right? So I do prefer a lotion. But, Elise, do you have specific beach strategies?
Elise Hu
Well, one of them is just to cover up more. So I have the kids in rash guards when they're not in the water. Like, they.
Dori Shafrier
They're.
Elise Hu
Yeah, actually, they often wear rash guards in the water too. And I would echo what you're saying about spray, which is that it often doesn't get on the kids. It often just goes out into the environment, though the kids like it. And in a pinch, if. If that's the only sunscreen that they're gonna put on their bodies, fine. You know, but the other sunscreen that we've been using a lot of is Trader Joe's. I think they have this giant lotion that's in an orange tube. Do you know which one I'm talking about? Rob got it not too long ago, and we've been using it as, like, one of our backup sunscreens that we keep in the car. And the kids like it. So that's a sunscreen lotion that they like for the beach. Specific question, though. I would just say cover up more. Make sure you have rash guards and cover ups that the kids like to wear and that are. That they think are cute. Like, I will always splurge on more covering. Cover up clothing because just so much. They just get so much sun just from being on the surface of, like, a bright surface like sand. You Know, it just reflects on them in a way that's. Can be really damaging and punishing in a short amount of time.
Dori Shafrier
I actually just went to the beach last weekend with Henry and he does wear a long sleeve rash guard. It is tough because they do get kind of covered in sand. We put. So kind of for that reason, we applied the sunscreen before we left the house. Because I find that even if you put it on like right away, right when you get to the beach, you still, it's still like sandy and sticky. So we did like a full. And also they want to like get in the water like right away and it's. It just becomes harder. So we, we did full sunscreen before we left the house. I also have like a swim hat for him now. So he was wearing that most of the time. I, I think it's a little small because he's such a big head. But yeah, he was wearing the hat. And then I did reapply the sunscreen on his face kind of halfway through our day. It was harder on his legs because like you said, they were just sort of covered in sand. But I tried to just like wipe them off and, and put a little bit of sunscreen on. I do find that, like the tops of the feet often get burned. And that's, that's an area that I try to.
Elise Hu
And the tops of reapply.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah. So we have a roll on mineral sunscreen from Coppertone that I really like. It's like their kids mineral sunscreen and I like the roll on. So we'll link to that in the show notes. It's a little less messy than a lotion.
Elise Hu
Yeah, we ride hard for a roller. Also, it's the baby bum roller that,
Dori Shafrier
yeah, Sunday, don't have any good ones
Elise Hu
anymore, but they all use the roller on their faces.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah. Okay. I hope that is helpful. I agree. Elise. I agree with Elise's sentiment to cover up more. I'm a big fan of covering up at the beach. All right, we're going to take another short break and when we come back, we have some swimsuit suggestions. Responding to a listener who asked for some recently and a note on crocs. All right, so we will be right back.
Elise Hu
Summer is great unless you're trying to keep the sun off your skin. Which is why the pieces I reach for over and over are breathable, lightweight, but still full coverage clothes. Pieces from Quince that focus on high quality essentials. Think breathable linen, soft, organic cotton, washable silk, but without the luxury markup. It's that rare balance where everything feels elevated but still easy. One Quince piece that's become my de facto summer uniform is the quince 100% organic cotton gauze smocked wide leg jumpsuit. Mine is in wild cherry. It is so comfy. It's an adult onesie that I can run errands in. I do all my drop offs and pickups in and you can dress it up and dress it down. Quince has beautiful everyday pieces like 100% European linen pants, dresses and tops with styles all starting at $32. Their denim is soft and easy to wear. Their organic sweaters are perfect for layering on cooler LA summer nights. Everything is priced 50 to 80% less than similar brands because Quince works directly with ethical factories and cuts out the middlemen so you're paying for quality and not markup. And it's not just clothing. Quince has really become a destination for elevated essentials across home kitchen, bedding and beyond. Y' all know I love my Quince candles. Elevate your summer wardrobe. Dori Shafrier
All right, we are back as promised with some swimsuit suggestions. Elise, do you want to take this first one?
Elise Hu
Yes so this is in response. A lot of these are in response to a question from a listener about just finding a good swimsuit for the summer. This listener writes, last summer I went on a quest to find cute high neck swimsuits because no matter how much sunscreen I apply, that sensitive skin on my chest always Burns. Andy makes the cutest swim available in long torso too. And they have this really cute one piece called the Malibu with snaps to go from full chest coverage or V neck. I love it. And this is Andy swim she's talking about. And we will link you to the Malibu ribbed black long torso swimsuit that this.
Dori Shafrier
Wait, at least weren't you just talking about Andy for something else or was it also swimming?
Elise Hu
I was not. We were we. This came up. I mean, I think you brought up.
Dori Shafrier
Oh, no, it wasn't Andy. It was Aerie.
Elise Hu
Oh, aerie. Yeah, I have an Aries. I love my Aries.
Dori Shafrier
Yes, yes, yes. Okay. And then we got. Actually got a couple of voicemails about swimsuits.
Listener/Caller
Hi, my name's Emily. I'm calling in about the recent you ask, we answer regarding women's swimsuits just because hilariously, I own four swimsuits right now. One is J. Crew, one is Bowdoin, one is Lan Jin, and one is Somersault, which are the four brands that you two talked about. And I thought I would quickly call in and say Bowdoin had the prettiest pattern, but I find it to be the least well fitted for my body type, which is a Fairly average size 8 mom of multiple kids body type. But the patterns are the prettiest, so I would wear that if you think that it's like going to be a looking at day. The J. Crew and the Somersault are very comparable. They're both fairly well made. But the underpinnings just do not compare to Lands End, which for my purposes as an active swimsuit chasing around kids is far and away the winner. The underpinning structure, the built in bra support on the lance inn is 10 times the quality of the other three. The patterns are boring to non existent. Mine is a plain solid. But if what you need is a whereabout active swimsuit, Lands in is, you know, six feet above the rest, significantly the best choice. They're all good though. I like all four of the suits, but they just are very different. Thank you guys for such a great episode. Have a nice day.
Dori Shafrier
I have heard really good things about
Elise Hu
Land's End and all of that was just really helpful. That was a really good rundown of everything.
Dori Shafrier
Totally. All right. We actually got a second voicemail about bathing suits.
Listener/Caller
Hey, this is Emily from Nashville calling in response to your latest episode looking for swimsuits and chunky sandal racks. Boy, do I have racks for you. I'll start with the easiest chunky sandals, Darrell sandals. I have probably four or five pairs. Beautiful, chunky, trendy, colorful. So comfortable. I know that they're known more for their winter gear. Don't sleep on the summer sandals. Love them so much. All right, bathing suits. Let's see. I recently bought several cute two pieces from Dick's Sporting Goods of all places. Check out the Calia line, which is the Terry Underwood line. Very cute, super affordable. They also have affordable sun shirts for one pieces. I actually have a couple that are not terrible from Costco, of all places. You do have to look at the styles because some of them are definitely like, Frumpy Mom. But I have two that are quite cute, and they were, you know, 15 bucks. I do also like somersault as well. Those are a bit more expensive. And my biome rack is Athleta. Love my Athleta bathing suits. They're definitely a bit more sporty. They have great rash guards. I have a cropped rash guard, and I also have a long sleeve. All in one bathing suit rash guard, which is great. Love them all.
Elise Hu
Dang this. Dick's Sporting Good Calia line, 14.50. On sale right now.
Dori Shafrier
Wow. Okay.
Elise Hu
From $58 for a top.
Dori Shafrier
Wow.
Elise Hu
I'm not sure how much for the bottom, but yes. Hello. 1450. Yeah.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah, that's great. That's a great price. Thanks for the heads up. Okay. We also got a text from someone with a. A UPF clothing recommendation.
Elise Hu
Love that.
Dori Shafrier
They said, this is really pretty UPF clothing, and they sent some photos. It looked like they saw it at a store. It's called Ivy Coast. And the clothes they sent a photo of are. Are really pretty. Um, I checked them out online. They are pricey. So it. It does sort of seem like a thing where unfortunately for, like, the stylish UPF clothing, you have to.
Elise Hu
You have to pay.
Dori Shafrier
You have to pay, you know, which I guess is. Is what it is. So thank you for this recommendation. I'm going to keep an eye on it and maybe see if I can find some secondhand or find some on sale. And. Yeah, nice. We'll see. All right. And then we got one last voicemail.
Listener/Caller
Hi, guys. Long time, long time. I've written, I've called. You guys know me. But I did have my first pause the pod moment today with the listener looking for coffee sandals. I co sign Elisa's recommendation for the Crocs. There's also one called the Soho y Sandal, and those are like walking on a cloud. I was influenced by my neighbor. They come in really cute colors. So those reef Also has really cute platform sandals that are also sort of in the vein of some of the styles that Croc has. And like, at the point I am in my life, I'm not as old as the caller or the listener who is asking. But like, two pregnancies, hot Midwest summers, I'm going for comfort when I have a four and a half and a two year old that I'm chasing. So, like, go with like a platform Birkenstock situation and you'll be really cute and comfortable.
Dori Shafrier
Thank you.
Elise Hu
I forgot to mention reef. I really like reef sandals. They're very comfy.
Dori Shafrier
Okay. Wow, these are all such hot tips. All right, well, thanks, everyone for all of your recommendations and your questions. This is when we get into the intention zone. I know we have always said we need some sort of fun sound effect.
Elise Hu
Yes, Sammy, go for it.
Dori Shafrier
Yeah.
Elise Hu
Hit it.
Dori Shafrier
Did you do any reflective writing or journaling last week?
Elise Hu
Oh, boy, did I. Because I have discovered a new dictation software.
Dori Shafrier
Oh, cool.
Elise Hu
In which I just press a button and I talk and it does all my journaling for me.
Dori Shafrier
Oh, my gosh.
Elise Hu
So I'm just like, I think I could write another book now I'm on. I'm such. I'm on cloud nine about this.
Dori Shafrier
What is the app?
Elise Hu
It's called Whisper Flow or something. I just downloaded it. It definitely uses some AI to, like, make sure that when you are at the end of the sentence, it ends the sentence and you don't have to actually dictate the punctuation. And it's very good. Like when I make references to things in culture. Yeah, they understand that it's the cult, you know, some cultural reference, so. Or websites, things like that. But it's been awesome. So now I feel like I've. I've been writing a lot more, but I'm writing by talking, so that kind of solved it.
Dori Shafrier
Cool.
Elise Hu
What about you? You were gonna. You were planning day trips, is that right?
Dori Shafrier
Yes. So I actually the. The trip we took to the beach on Sunday, I am putting into the day trip category, even though it was not that far, because I proactively reached out to a friend, asked if she and her son wanted to join us at the beach. We made plans. We got to the beach. I got Henry a new boogie board because she had mentioned that her son had a boogie board and Henry had boogie boarded once at a friend's birthday party. And he really liked it, but we just like, never got him a boogie board. I was like, okay, getting him a boogie board. I got a new beach chair. I was like, we are good to go.
Elise Hu
You're doing it.
Dori Shafrier
And Henry had the best time. Like, I've been friends with this mom, like, since our kids were babies, but the kids have never been super close until very recently.
Elise Hu
Oh, that's true.
Dori Shafrier
And they had the, the best time. It was really sweet. They had, like, very similar beach goals.
Elise Hu
OKRs.
Listener/Caller
Yeah.
Dori Shafrier
Like, they, you know, they wanted to do the same things, which included chasing birds and building large piles of sand and boogie boarding. Great. Yeah, they just had a great time. I. We were there for five hours and like, Henry could have stayed another five hours, but I was like, I think I gotta go. Like, I was getting tired. But yeah, it was great. But I do definitely want to plan some more stuff coming up because it was, it was super fun. Yeah. So that's, that's what I have going on. That's what I had going on last week.
Elise Hu
And then what do you intend.
Dori Shafrier
And then for this week, I feel like I've gotten into, like, a good writing groove, so I want to kind of continue that.
Elise Hu
Awesome, awesome.
Dori Shafrier
What about you? What are you, what are you going to do this week?
Elise Hu
Well, I don't know when this happened, but Fitbit was taken over by Google and so now Fitbit, all my Fitbit data has. Is just been sucked in by Google. And now it's called Google Health. And the interface is completely different and it's showing me metrics in a different way. And one of the things that it measures is cardio health or something or the amount of cardio I've done to get, I can't remember. It's a, it's, you know, a ring that I have to complete each week. So let's see, it's called weekly cardio. And for every unit of cardio that you do during the week, it shows you what percentage of your weekly cardio you have achieved. So so far this week, I've only achieved 10% of my weekly cardio that I need. And it's not by time necessarily. It's by your heart rate and how long your heart rate is in a sustained, you know, cardio optimal state. And so I still have to achieve my weekly cardio. So I guess my intention is going to be to try to achieve my mystifying weekly cardio goal that I don't know how it's calculated, but it would be nice to complete the circle.
Dori Shafrier
I feel like cardio got a bad rap for a while. Like, people were talking about strength, and I do think strength is very important, especially for us. Perimenopausal ladies. But I think cardio is also important. Like, let's not forget about cardio.
Elise Hu
Cardio load measures your heart's exertion based on the intensity and duration of your physical activity. So I need to have more intensity and duration.
Dori Shafrier
Hmm.
Elise Hu
Okay.
Dori Shafrier
Okay.
Elise Hu
But like, yeah, I took an hour long trampoline class yesterday of like, trampolining and Pilates reformer together, and it only was an 11 cardio load, so it only gave me 10%. So I have to do a lot more exertion. Huh?
Dori Shafrier
Yeah, that was surprising.
Elise Hu
My average heart rate zone never got into high enough, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. All right, we'll. I will intend to try and meet
Dori Shafrier
this, but it could end up please let us know.
Elise Hu
Being a lot.
Dori Shafrier
