Everything was real. Inconceivably real, Infinitely dear. These and all things started as nothing latent within a vast energy broth. But then we named them and loved them, and in this way brought them forth. And now we must lose them. George Saunders Lincoln in the Bardo I'm Annie Jones, owner of the Bookshelf, an independent bookstore in beautiful downtown Thomasville, Georgia, and this week we are dipping into the from the Front Porch archives, a place not dissimilar to the Disney vault, to bring you our favorite audiobook recommendations. Before we get started, did you know Audible is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon? I'm not sure I would have fully been aware of that fact were it not for my work here in the bookselling world. Which is why, as both a consumer of audiobooks and as a bookstore owner, I am grateful for Libro FM and the ways they partner with independent bookstores. If you're not familiar, Libro FM makes it possible for you to buy audiobooks through your local bookstore. You can head to Libro fm, choose the bookstore you'd like to support, and then that store will get a portion of every purchase you make. You can support the Bookshelf by going to Libro FM Bookshelf Thomasville. You can buy audiobooks there a la carte, or you can have a monthly membership just like other digital audiobook platforms. Jordan and I both have and use our Libro FM memberships. Obviously, you can listen to audiobooks in whatever ways are most convenient for you. Many of my friends use Libro FM as well as Libby, a platform for libraries. But the Bookshelf has partnered with Libro FM since its inception, and it's a joy to have a platform to recommend to audiobook listeners who want to support indie bookstores like Hours. Just go to Libro FM Bookshelf Thomasville to find out more. Now, back to the show. I am coming to you from the past and I do just feel like I need to address the elephant in the room. This is like when you're watching reruns of your old favorite sitcoms and you can hear in the actors or actress's voice that they have a cold, but nobody's acknowledging it and I always hate that. And so I'm here to acknowledge that yes, I do have a cold. I am also 8 and a half months pregnant because again, I'm coming to you from the past and I am trying to record enough podcast episodes to keep you Dear listener satiated over this summer and me in some sort of entrepreneur's version of maternity leave, which I have yet to know what that looks like. So between being eight and a half months pregnant, having a cold, being on deadline, the show must go on. I don't like sounding like this. You probably don't like listening to this, so we're going to keep this short and sweet. I have no idea what this summer is going to look like, but between a book tour and a baby, it did become apparent this spring that despite my very best efforts, I would not be able to batch record all of the episodes I needed to in order to bring you entirely new content all summer long. So, as you heard last week, we're bringing you a couple of different types of episodes for July and August. We launched our summer readings series last week with Annabelle Monahan's latest It's a Love Story, and this week we're going back into the from the Front Porch archives for a beloved episode with my husband Jordan. This episode was originally recorded in the fall of 2022. Do we sound three years younger? I bet I sound better than I do right now. And Jordan came on the podcast to discuss audiobook, our history with them, and our favorite titles. Jordan was the perfect guest for this particular topic because as a commuter he consumes most of his reading through listening. My own mind, too, has been changed regarding audiobooks. If you're a longtime listener, you know this As a visual learner, I still do occasionally struggle with the format, but the pandemic helped me see just how valuable it is to listen and to be read too. We discuss all this and more on this archival episode, and I hope you enjoy. I think it could be a nice refresher as you're making your own road trips and planning out what you'll listen to while you travel this summer. As a reminder, all of today's titles can be found on Libro FM for your listening pleasure, or through the Bookshelf website. If you prefer a physical format, just type episode538 into the show. Notes now let's go back in time.
