So close your eyes and relax your body in the welcoming dark. Imagine a full silvery moon. Around it twinkles an infinite expanse of stars. They are pinpricks of pure light against a night that is not just black, but a swirling mix of deep purples and blues. One by one, take the thoughts of the day and cast them to each of the stars. The stars will keep them safe for you tonight, ready for you to collect them upon waking. With each new thought that presses itself against your consciousness, gently send it to another star. Notice how the stars are not just white, but shades of blue, pink and orange. Once your thoughts are clear, turn your attention to your body. The silvery light of the full moon shines down on you and you can feel the tension slipping away. The light of the book brings calm and peace to a body in in need of rest. Deep within our subconscious, we're programmed to know that the moon means it's time for sleep. Allow that primal desire for Sleep to fill the places in your body that were occupied by the warm energy of the sun. Deepen your breathing. Focus on the rhythm of your inhale and exhale. As you breathe, you pick up the subtle smell of incense in the air. The warm glow of light reveals a dark but cozily inviting room. And this is where our story begins. Scorpio takes a long inhale of the lavender, the incense she chose, allowing it to fill her nose as a sense of relaxation washes over her. She exhales and opens her eyes. The small room is lit by an ornate Turkish lamp, which throws a warm glow and shades of multicolored light around the space. She sits at a small circular table covered in a piece of deep purple velvet, so luxurious it seems to be woven out of the night sky. She rests in a comfy wingback chair. The twin of the one across the table in the background plays a recording of forest sounds. She finds that the soundtrack allows people to relax in her presence, the same way being in nature calms the mind. A warm fire crackles merrily from a small fireplace in the corner, adding a cozy element to the room and casting out even more warm light, which dances cheerfully across the walls. Along the walls are illustrations and landscape paintings. A wooden sideboard holds the incense burner and a collection of dried herbs in jars. A small shelf above it holds multicolored candles, stones and a small pewter cauldron that could fit in one hand. The room feels like another world to those who enter. Scorpio has crafted it to be an escape and a liminal space where her guests can come to focus on the answers they seek without distraction. The other occupant of the room is a large, fluffy orange cat curled under Scorpio's chair. He occasionally yawns and rolls over to better enjoy his nap. Scorpio sits in anticipation of her first guest. For the millennia she has spent in the stars, she has dearly missed the act of fortune telling. Humans are such inquisitive beings, and being a facilitator of their curiosity is one of her greatest joys. On the table sits a deck of tarot cards. They are well used and soft to the touch, almost like fine satin beneath the fingers. Scorpio has chosen the Rider Waite Smith deck as it's the most traditional and her personal favourite. The Rider Waite Smith deck was based on the work of the mystic and academic A.E. waite. He and the illustrator Pamela Coleman Smith were members of the Order of the Golden Dawn, a Victorian group that studied the occult. The cards were originally published by the Rider Company, though the original design and accompanying booklet have been the basis of many variations over the years. Scorpio particularly likes the original design because of Smith's illustrations. Every detail on the beautifully colourful cards has a symbolic meaning, from the background to the position of the figures. Scorpio also feels drawn to Tarot cards because they are not just isolated images, but because their order is that of a story. Story lies at the heart of Tarot. The Major arcana, which is 22 of the 78 card deck, tells the story of the fool, the first card of the deck. He is the main character, and as he continues on his path, he meets a variety of events and figures that teach him valuable life lessons until the final card of the Major Arcana, the world. The world represents the completion of goals, connection to others, and the world around us, and a lack of boundaries. Scorpio knows that everyone is the fool, not because they are foolish, but because everyone is on a journey from innocence to knowledge. Scorpio picks up the deck, relishing the feeling of the cards in her hands. She turns a few cards over and places them face up on the table. She recognizes several of the Major Arcana, the Moon, the High Priestess and Justice. They are the cards that are most closely related to Scorpio herself. She is being associated with the feminine, the mystical, and a strong sense of personal justice. Other cards are arranged in a random order on the table, and Scorpio is not wholly surprised to see them. The first is the Queen of Cups. Cups is one of the four suits of the Minor Arcana. Just like in a deck of normal playing cards. The ace through 10 cards tells a story in each suit, ones with highs and lows, ultimately ending in positivity. Cups specifically covers emotions, relationships, intuition and love. It's associated with the element of water. Scorpio is a water sign and often finds cups in her readings when she is pulling cards for herself. The Queen of Cups is a face card, one of four found in each suit. The others are pages, knights and, of course, kings. The Queen of Cups is intuitive, calm and compassionate, exactly the aura that Scorpio presents to her guests when she reads for them. A rustling from the other side of the door alerts Scorpio to the fact that her first guest has arrived. Scorpio gathers up the cards, shuffles them to reset them, and calls for the person to enter. A man comes in, smiling shyly, and takes a seat in the armchair across the table from Scorpio. Scorpio smiles and engages him in some Small talk. She finds that connecting with her guests is the most important part of her practice. It allows them to feel safe, comfortable, and open to the experience. When Scorpio was in the world many years ago, she was a priestess who would decipher the prophecies of the gods and relay them to humans. Even then, getting to know someone for a few minutes was just as important as the message itself. The man tells her that he is looking for love. Scorpio is not surprised, as their chat revealed him to be a sensitive and charismatic person. Even the cat has crawled out from his napping spot to curl up in the man's lap. Scorpio instructs him to close his eyes and to focus on all the qualities he looks for in a partner. While he meditates on these personality traits, Scorpio briefly passes her deck of cards through the smoke of the incense to purify them, wiping their energy clean for the reed. She shuffles the cards several times and then has the man cut the deck. He does so, his face alight with excitement and anticipation. Scorpio deals out three cards for face down from left to right in front of her guest. She flips the card on her guest's left, showing its illustration. The card is the Three of Swords, showing a red love heart with three swords through it. When Scorpio reveals that this card tells of heartbreak in the past, the man nods. She then explains that the suit of swords has to do with the mind and the intellect. She tells him that this card has appeared because it's what is weighing on his mind. Scorpio moves on to the next card, revealing the Six of Cups. Though it is upside down to the man, cards have different meanings depending on whether they appear upside down or right side up to the recipient. The reversed six of Cups represents being stuck in the past. Its image shows six cups filled with flowers, one of which a young boy is handing to a young girl. The final card Scorpio flips the Queen of Pentacles, showing a beautiful woman on a throne holding a large gold coin. Scorpio explains that the Queen of Pentacles is a person who is practical, down to earth, and a bit of a homebody. She values a comfortable home and works hard to achieve security for herself and her loved ones. Scorpio also clarifies that though the person on a card might have a gender, the card itself can refer to any person, regardless of gender. The man's eyes are bright when he says that these qualities are exactly the ones he was imagining for a future partner with all the cards revealed, Scorpio tells him that his path is clear. If he can work to move past his previous heartbreak and no longer obsess about the past, he will be open to meeting the partner he seeks. The man beams happily and thanks Scorpio thoroughly. He gently removes the cat from his lap, who gives him an orange eyed stare before sauntering into a shadow of the room. As the man exits, Scorpio smiles to herself. The beauty of Tarot is that it never truly reveals anything that the individual doesn't already know. It merely allows them to see it in a new way. After all, it is always easier to listen to good advice than follow the good advice you tell yourself. As she picks up the cards to shuffle them again, Scorpio's eyes fall on the Queen of Pentacles and she grins. Pentacles is an earth suit and the most grounded. It deals with tangible things like health, family, wealth and the home. It sounds like the man's ideal partner is a grounded individual, which would be a suitable balance for this bubbly, romantic man. Scorpio wishes them all the best once they are united. A soft knock on the door rouses Scorpio from her musings and she welcomes a woman into her room. The woman pauses before taking her seat, allowing the orange cat to sniff her hand. He brushes against her, briefly, showing his approval before laying down again. Scorpio talks to this woman, getting a sense that she is a contemplative and intellectual individual. She towers Scorpio immediately that she is interested in developing wealth and the security that comes with it. Scorpio has the woman close her eyes to picture the life she wants to have, including her beautiful home, the feeling of satisfaction she gets from a job she loves, and the freedom of being able to be generous with others. Scorpio passes the cards through the smoke, shuffles them and asks the woman to cut the deck. The first card is the Four of Swords, showing a knight in full armour lying on a plinth with his hands crossed peacefully over his heart. Scorpio asks her guest if she has been enjoying a period of rest and recuperation, possibly taking a break from her goals. The woman confirms Scorpio's suspicions, explaining that she spent several months focusing on herself rather than her career, but she now feels ready to turn her full attention back to her aims. Scorpio nods as the middle card is revealed to be the Temperance, one of the major arcana. Temperance urges the recipient to use balance and moderation, to be patient and purposeful, and to find meaning in their life. Temperance appears on the card as an angel pouring water between two cups. She has one foot on a rock and one in the water, representing balance. Scorpio relays this meaning, watching the woman nod sagely, already deep in thought regarding her cards. The final card comes up as the Seven of Pentacles. Its image is of a man leaning on a hoe and appreciating a flourishing green bush covered in gold coin like flowers. Scorpio can't help but smile broadly at the card, which stands for Perseverance, Profit and Reward. Scorpio and her guest talk at length about how this woman's time of rest and recuperation will benefit her immensely as she moves forward, focusing on cultivating balance rather than rushing ahead with investments or plans. The reward of her patient work will encompass all those things that she desires. Scorpio gathers up the cards as the woman leaves, waving goodbye. Scorpio doesn't believe it will be difficult for such a grounded woman to put the teachings of Temperance into action. Even her presence in the room brought a calm, introspective air to the proceedings. Scorpio makes a mental note to keep an eye on the woman's fortunes when she returns to her home among the stars. She then leans back in her chair and allows herself a moment of rest. The sounds of the forest still play in the background as Scorpio lets her mind wander. She imagines the scene of the forest. A soft breeze rustles through the leaves of the trees. The sun shines in dappling raindrops of light through the canopy. Birds call to one another from unseen perches. A creek bubbles nearby, providing a home for croaking frogs. Hundreds of other hidden life forms add to the symphony that is the forest soundtrack. Even the smell of lavender brings to mind a few bushes of bright purple flowers under a tree. Scorpio barely notices as the orange tomcat lightly jumps into her lap, settles down, and begins to purr deeply. She doesn't know how long she sits in this state before she hears a knock at the door. Scorpio beckons for her last guest to enter. This one is a young woman, perhaps only a few years out of school. Despite her age, she holds herself with the bearing of someone who has seen and done a lot in their life. The orange cat watches her cross the room and sit opposite Scorpio. Scorpio ascertains that this young person is adventurous and passionate. She has come to get insight into her future, looking for nothing specific but eager to find out more. Scorpio leads her through the usual start of the ritual, telling her to focus her mind on herself, the things that make her happy and those attributes that she feels are key parts of her personality. As if participating in the ritual, the cat closes his eyes too. The cards are cleansed, shuffled, cut and dealt. The first card is that of a young man holding a tall staff, looking inquisitively at the green leaves that have sprouted from the top. The Page of Wands is a person who is nearly the perfect definition of a free spirit. Someone for whom inspiration, new ideas and constant discovery are like second nature. The suit of Wands deals with spirituality, primal energy and intuition. Immediately, Scorpio can tell that the Page of Wands represents the young person sitting before her. From their introductory chat, Scorpio gathered that this guest has traveled far and wide in her young life, meeting many interesting people and generally going where the wind has taken her. The guest herself laughs out loud when Scorpio explains the meaning of the card, declaring that the cards know her better than she knows herself. The middle card is revealed to be the Wheel of Fortune. This comes halfway through the major arcana, signifying good luck and a turning point in life. The beautiful illustration shows a wheel with a sphinx, the mystical representation of strength and wisdom, sitting on top. The young woman peers down closely at the card, taking in all the fine details as Scorpio describes its meaning. King of Wands is the final card. A king sits on a throne with his staff in hand. Where the pages staff was just starting to sprout, the king's is in full bloom. Scorpio relays that he represents a person who is a natural leader, an entrepreneur, and someone with clear long term goals. Before Scorpio can weave the story of the three cards together, the young woman starts speaking. She says that it seems to her she has the chance to take an opportunity of this turning point in her life, which will lead her down a path to becoming like the King of Wands. She looks up at Scorpio when she finishes seeking confirmation that she has interpreted correctly. Scorpio asserts that this is the same way she reads the cards, but that the cards only reveal what can happen, not what will. The real outcome is entirely up to her guest. The young woman beams in response, then leans over to pet the cat and gets up to leave. She waves goodbye, energised by the opportunities ahead. Scorpio gathers up the cards while the cat jumps gracefully to the floor and walks to the other chair. He leaps into it and curls up, never one to let a warm seat go. Unoccupied, Scorpio shuffles the cards in her hands, absentmindedly thinking about the people she met today. On an impulse, she stops shuffling and pulls the top card from the deck, revealing it to herself. She starts laughing, provoking a one eyed stare from the cat. The card she has pulled is the eight of wands, showing eight sticks flying through the air at high speed. The card can mean things like movement, fast change, alignment or action, but the reason Scorpio is laughing is because it can also mean travel by air. She takes that as a sign that it's time to let the illusion of her tarot shop slip away and return to her home among the stars. The three people who came to see her will try to find the tarot shop again, but they will never quite remember where it was and eventually they will just assume that it must have closed. The last young woman, however, will wake up tomorrow morning to find an orange cat in her home and a deck of tarot cards on her table.
