Derek Gilbert
From the beautiful Missouri Ozarks. Greetings and welcome to the Gilbert House fellowship for Sunday, April 19, 2026. I'm Derek Gilbert.
Sharon Gilbert
I am Sharon Gilbert. Welcome to our home. Everyone. We are so, so glad you've chosen to join us again this morning. If you are brand new to the fellowship, we welcome you. If you're listening to this on YouTube, thank you very much. If you wouldn't mind sharing, liking subscribing would be really nice.
Derek Gilbert
Yep.
Sharon Gilbert
And if you have high points left. Okay. This is new kids speak. We're actually still learning this.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
If you would hype it. And the only reason we honestly this isn't to pat us on the back, it's to help us others to know the fellowship is here.
Derek Gilbert
Absolutely. We don't monetize the fellowship because it just seems wrong.
Sharon Gilbert
It is wrong.
Derek Gilbert
So we don't do that. But yes, we would like to see this get out there just because it's the word of the Lord. Your comments below also help the algorithm. So we appreciate that very much. And once you've done that, just to guarantee that we never get canceled from you anyway, please download our app. We've got versions for phones, tablets, smart TVs, set top boxes, everything from iOS to Google TV. We've got links@gilberthouse.org app also if you
Sharon Gilbert
are led by the Lord and we'll talk about this later, there are ways to donate. For now if you want to go there, it's Gilberthouse.org donate but when we have the OG report we'll talk about that a bit more. Yeah, we also as you say have the app. So I, you know there are, there are partially, what's I'm trying to say there are section. Sections, thank you. Of the app capabilities in the act. That's the word I wanted in the app that you won't get on say podcast catchers and the apps for the television. Because there's a bible there, right. You can search by guest, you can. And there's a brand new look to it, to the app that Derek has tweaked a bit. And if for some reason you find that that altered some way that you interact with the app, please let us know.
Derek Gilbert
Right. There is a groups function or community function in the top right corner of the app. You'll find little talk bubbles there. If you tap on that, you can join the groups there. There are sections for this fellowship, for a view from the bunker, for Sharon's podcast, the armored Sheep and so on. Places where you can ask questions of either one of us. And of course, your comments in the Open Forum are more welcome. I like the way it looks. The new feature, the newest content, is always right at the top, so that when you go back to the app, you can see when something new has been added. It will also remember what you have previously watched or listened to. And if you want to continue playing, you do that. When you scroll down to the very bottom, it's got a list of the speakers that we have featured most frequently. Of course, you can also search. That's what the little magnifying glass there at top right is for. You can search by Bible verse, by topic, by speaker. And so I think it's very functional. The developers of the app have done a really wonderful job, but sometimes what I think looks cool is maybe not what's most useful for you. I've already had one person comment and say that because of the update, she was going through and using the Read through the Bible in a year feature, it has now deleted her history of reading. And I'm so sorry for that.
Sharon Gilbert
We are so sorry. We had no idea it would reset things like that.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, I did not realize that that would be a problem. So forgive me, I'm sorry about that. But I wanted to make the app look a little more dynamic because the way it was before, you'd go in, you'd see the list of all of the various programs, but you couldn't really tell when something new had been added.
Sharon Gilbert
No.
Derek Gilbert
So now you can see that right away, and hopefully that makes it a little more functional for you. But. Again, the developers at Subsplash have done just a wonderful job of the coding and the new features that they've released over the past year without saying, okay, well, if you want this, you're gonna have to pay an upgrade charge away. It is a really affordable and way of getting this out and, you know, not just for mobile devices, but for, again, smart TVs, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon
Sharon Gilbert
Fire TV, and if you do the it or social media for a church, oh, my goodness. This is what they started doing. Subsplash originally was just for churches, and now they're reaching out and serving a lot of ministries.
Derek Gilbert
Credit to the people at our friends at Prophecy Watchers for putting us onto this 10 years ago. Yeah, with Skywatch TV, I set up the original version of Skywatch TV. And to be honest, it was because whoever has taken over for me, I think it's Jamie over there at Skywatch tv, saw this new feature and added it. And I looked at Skywatch TV's app and said, hey, that looks cool.
Sharon Gilbert
I know. She's one of the cool kids.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Why doesn't our app look like that? So that I figured out how to, you know, basically copy.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah. We're just copying the cool kids.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. So anyway, it is being good stewards because rather than having to pay a developer for a custom app, thanks to the team at subsplash for making it affordable, because it helps us to get this information out to the world, frankly, without having to spend an arm and a leg.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, Since March of 2005, you and I have been doing podcasting, and the Lord has told us over and over again, okay, you've got what you need to do. He's. He has taught us.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
Directly or through others, that we can do things on a shoestring.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
And that to us, is we try to be good stewards because the funding comes from you guys.
Derek Gilbert
Right. Right. And, you know, I. That. That makes it, I think, impresses a sense of responsibility. I mean, if this was something that, you know, I was, like, top salesman for an insurance company or something, we were bringing in all our own money. Hey, then we could just, you know, go and spend whatever we wanted to. But we feel that sense of responsibility because it is through your gifts and the Lord's leading. And so therefore, we feel that it is not. We. We are not free to just. No, you know, spend on whatever.
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly. Regardless of the amount. If you gave us 10 cents, we would.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
We would try to. To do. To use that wisely.
Derek Gilbert
Stretch it as much as. As far as we can. And again, for the purpose of getting this information out there. And, you know, the Lord doesn't need us to do this, but yet he's called us to. He's called us to it, and through your generosity, your gifts, sacrificial giving. Yeah. So we've been able to do this, and we are blessed to be able to do this so well back at Amos. Amos. Yeah, he's. Boy, he's not, like, famous Amos, the guy who made the cookies, he's got some hard cheese that he's delivering today, as the Brits would say.
Sharon Gilbert
Yep, the cookies are pretty delicious. Some of this is not quite as delicious.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Especially to those who are giving the messages.
Derek Gilbert
Do not disturb here.
Sharon Gilbert
Who's dinging you? Is it Joe?
Derek Gilbert
No, actually it is our good friend from Israel, Eliko.
Sharon Gilbert
Oh, well, we must talk with Eliko.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, we'll talk about Eliko at the end of it because we need to ask for prayers for him and our good friends in Israel and Speaking of prayer. Yeah. We will open with a word of prayer. Father, we thank youk for bringing us together over your word. And, Father, we ask, as we study today, that yout would open our minds and our hearts, that we would hear and receive that which youh would have us learn. We know that we are living in times that the prophets foresaw and would have spared us, had they the power. Just as Amos foresaw the destruction of his land and was compelled to prophesy it, even though it angered the king. The prophets of old foresaw a day coming when the Lord's wrath would be poured out on this world. And while we are not appointed unto wrath, we are leading into tribulation. In fact, Jesus said that his followers would endure tribulation, would be delivered up before rulers for judgment for his name's sake. May we be counted worthy for that. For that kind of judgment, Lord, may we be bold enough to proclaim your name, even when it is unpopular or even dangerous. Father, we pray, as we study, that your Spirit grants us wisdom to learn. And we ask this in Jesus name. Amen.
Sharon Gilbert
Amen.
Derek Gilbert
I had a conversation with our good friend Mark Sutherland from the UK the other night, and we were talking about how difficult things are getting in the uk. There's as their leadership seems either oblivious or complicit in selling out the nation to another religion, shall we say? I said, yeah, it's funny that we see this prophesied in scripture, and yet when it's right upon us, suddenly we realize it was a lot more fun when it was just theoretical. So we are living in these times. And amos, in the 8th century BC, he chose you.
Sharon Gilbert
Chose us.
Derek Gilbert
Chose us to live in this time. So this is the time. This is the hour when we need to step up. Amos, chapter eight. This is what the Lord Yahweh showed me. Behold, a basket of summer fruit. And he said, amos, what do you see? And I said, a basket of summer fruit. Then Yahweh said to me, the end has come upon my people Israel. I will never again pass by them. The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day, declares the your lord, Yahweh. Yes, Mrs. G?
Sharon Gilbert
May I read it in the Septuagint, please?
Derek Gilbert
I know there's some very interesting differences.
Sharon Gilbert
And behold, a fowler's basket. This is someone who catches birds. And he said, what seest thou, Amos? And I said, a fowler's basket. And the Lord said to me, the end is come upon my people Israel. I will not pass by them anymore. And the ceilings of the temple shall howl in that day, said the Lord God. There shall be many a fallen one in every place. I will bring silence upon them. Okay, the Septuagint, if you're brand new to this, it was translated from a Hebrew text no longer available by Hebrew scholars that also understood and could write Greek. They also understood the context of that manuscript, and so they chose certain translations into the Greek. So I'm reading from the Brenton, which is free. You can find it on Blue letter Bible@BibleHub.com and it isn't. That's why you see these announcements in it. It's a bit of an older English translation from the Greek. So my question is, why the difference? And it's not a huge difference, but it's a little bit different. Why are we seeing a basket used by men who catch birds instead of a basket of fruit? That's different.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, that is different.
Sharon Gilbert
These things matter because the Lord is showing a particular vision to Amos to get a message across.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. I don't know, because I don't know what.
Sharon Gilbert
These are. Baskets that are used to. To trap birds. And ceilings of the Temple shall howl. Well, ceilings don't howl.
Derek Gilbert
No.
Sharon Gilbert
So in the original
Derek Gilbert
I of the
Sharon Gilbert
Temple, do you have any commentary on that in the Faith Life Bible?
Derek Gilbert
No. Nothing that would explain this. Yeah, the one thing that I did see in here, which is kind of odd, and again, this is just some simple language stuff that doesn't really help us understand what the difference between Fowler and summer fruit is that in the Israelite dialect of Hebrew, which is different from the Judahite dialect. Okay. Northern and Southerner. Yeah. Judah. Apparently, the Judy Judeans had a Southern drawl. Apparently, the word for end is Quetz. Q E T S transliterated. And the word for summer fruit would be Kaietz Q A Y, I, T, S. However, in the Israelite dialect, they would have been the same. So it's a. Some wordplay, and maybe that's why it's been changed, just for a bit of wordplay. Summer fruit. The end. A basket of Kaietz. And then the Lord said to me, yeah. Yahweh said to me, the Kets has come upon my people, Israel.
Sharon Gilbert
You know. Okay, maybe I'm reading into it and forgive me if I am. But by beginning with a basket used to trap birds, it's as if the Lord is saying, I am going to allow you to be trapped. And in verse three, and it says, steps to agent. And the ceilings of the Temple shall howl in that day, saith the Lord. God, there shall be many a fallen one in every place. I will bring silence upon them. Yeah, and I would say that this not fallen one as an entities, this is fallen when I assume as someone who's caught and silenced, perhaps not allowed to speak or silenced as in you are forever silenced.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
I don't know.
Derek Gilbert
Well, I didn't read all of verse three in the esv.
Sharon Gilbert
Please.
Derek Gilbert
I'm sorry, I thought you had verse three in the esv. The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day, declares the Lord Yahweh. So many dead bodies, they are thrown everywhere. Silence. Now that would dead bodies in the temple obviously would desecrate it, right? And again, prophetically, Amos looking forward to the day when the northern kingdom and here when he's referring to Israel, we need to remember there are two kingdoms, Israel and Judah. So he's not referring to all this is the northern kingdom, right? The northern kingdom of Israel, which was going to be destroyed by the Assyrians. And if I remember the year correctly, 722 BC, which is roughly 40 to 50 years in the future from when Amos was writing.
Sharon Gilbert
The question though, if it says the Temple, does this mean the Temple in Jerusalem or the place of worship in the north?
Derek Gilbert
That we don't know. And Faith Life Study Bible is not clear on that. It could be the temple at Bethel, which again in last week's reading, we remember the priest Amaziah telling on Hamus to King Jeroboam ii. Not to be confused with Jeroboam, who broke away the northern kingdom From Solomon about 200 years earlier, 150 years earlier, roughly Jeroboam II and King Uzziah of Judah, roughly contemporary. And both of them ruling over a time of peace and prosperity for those kingdoms. But that was soon to end. That's what Amos is prophesying here as the kingdom of Assyria comes into its power. They'd fought some battles in the time of Ahab, about a hundred years before this, in the time of Elijah. But coalition of Syrian or Aramean kingdoms in what is now Syria, plus King Omri and then King Ahab in the north, helped to fight back the Assyrians. But the Assyrians didn't give up. They kept getting stronger and eventually overwhelmed the Aramean kingdoms, overwhelmed the kingdom of Israel, the Philistines, the Phoenicians, except for the city of Tyre, which survived, but because Tyre was on an island like off the coast, you had to go up a causeway to get to it.
Sharon Gilbert
Right.
Derek Gilbert
It wasn't until Alexander the Great Nebuchadnezzar tried to conquer it. Couldn't do it. But Alexander finally did in the 4th century BC. Historical geek stuff. Anyway, set all that aside. Amos. Looking forward to what? Not looking forward. To foreseeing.
Sharon Gilbert
Being told what will happen.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
And again, there were no chapter divisions back in the day.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
So this is just another of his many visions. And hence why I think you see a different chapter here. But if you want to keep reading.
Derek Gilbert
And again, when God says, I will never again pass by them, it's not like he's saying, I'm just going to ignore them. Now what he's saying is, I will no longer overlook their sins.
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
So that's what he's meaning.
Sharon Gilbert
Yes.
Derek Gilbert
The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day, declares the Lord. Yahweh. So many dead bodies. They're thrown everywhere. Silence. Nothing left in the temple. And it's desecrated because of the dead bodies. Hear this, you who trample on the needy and bring the poor of the land to an end, saying, when will the new moon be over? That we may sell grain and the Sabbath. That we may offer wheat for sale. That we may make the Ephah small and the shekel great, and deal deceitfully with false balances. That we may buy the poor for sil and the needy for a pair of sandals and sell the chaff of the wheat.
Sharon Gilbert
You know, nothing is new under the sun.
Derek Gilbert
No.
Sharon Gilbert
The way that those who have a lot treat those who have nothing is the same now as it used to be. And those who. And I'm going to address many some in the church today who consider Israel worth nothing.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
They look at Israel and they say, you are not the real Jews. You don't belong there. They are in social media, you might even say, trampling upon them.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
And that is not what we see. The Lord. The Lord is not discarding them.
Derek Gilbert
No.
Sharon Gilbert
The Lord is trying to get their attention and. And correct them. He's reproving them.
Derek Gilbert
Ye.
Sharon Gilbert
You do this with your own children.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
If your children misbehave, they are given the rules. And. Okay, the first infraction, you might scold them. The second time, you might have to send them to their room. The third time, you take away their phones. The fourth time, you have to have a serious talk. Yeah, The Lord is having a very serious talk.
Derek Gilbert
And if they're young enough, you might have to take a.
Sharon Gilbert
Back in the day, I got spanked.
Derek Gilbert
Paddle to the backside.
Sharon Gilbert
I did. I got spanked many a time when
Derek Gilbert
I was A kid.
Sharon Gilbert
And that was just the old woodshed idea. But, you know, it would be generally a scolding. And that was the order. And the last thing was a spank. It wasn't the automatic. The spanking was. Here's another example that Jim Dobson used to call tough love. That if your child is doing things that are harmful to himself and others, you sometimes have to say, look, I can't help you this time. You've gone. You've been arrested for the third time. I'm not bailing you out. I am going to let you sit there and. And I pray the Lord can help you to realize what it is you're
Derek Gilbert
doing, the error of your ways, and
Sharon Gilbert
you continue to pray and love your child. But sometimes you have to let the child, that prodigal child, roll in the mud.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Yeah. There are those who today would say that Israel can't be the real Israel because they're not yet. They're not believers in Jesus Christ. It's outside the scope of this study because we could do a whole hour on just. We could where the Bible. Because the Bible never says they are restored to the land only after righteousness. But I would suggest that the correction that is being prophesied here and is in already, but not yet. Not just the destruction of the Northern kingdom by the Assyrians, but eventually the scattering of the Jews, not after AD 70. That's not when it happened. It happened after 136 AD, after the bar Kokba rebellion. And the fact that they were scattered in the land for the next 1800 years from the land that was God's discipline.
Sharon Gilbert
Yes. On Israel, there is an unconditional promise. There are several of them. The Davidic covenant is one example. The Genesis 3 promise is another example. The fact that the Lord has called us his children does not mean that we don't get correction now and then. And yet we are still his children. The prodigal son, the son just goes off and does crazy things.
Derek Gilbert
Right? Right.
Sharon Gilbert
But when his heart sees and understands and realizes that is where I was loved, he goes home. And where's the dad? Where is the Lord? Where's our creator? He's standing on the road watching for him.
Derek Gilbert
Watch. Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
That's what's going on. The Lord is still watching for Israel.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. And for us to come home.
Sharon Gilbert
And for us. Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
So that is what we're looking at here. Sharon and I had a conversation before the program this morning, and she reminded me of the famous words of Joshua at Shechem, choose this day whom you will serve. And I realize that that's how I'm going to conclude my presentations this summer at the conferences that we'll tell you about here in just a little bit. Because, yeah, that is ultimately the decision that all of us have to make. So, anyway, hear this, you who trample on the needy. When will the new moon be over? And the Sabbath. Basically, the merchants are not honoring these holy days. They find them as inconveniences. These are nuisances. We gotta do this. And when will this be over? Because I gotta reopen the business.
Sharon Gilbert
I am old enough that I remember business being closed every Sunday.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. And today Chick Fil A gets mocked for closing on Sunday. But you're right, that was the thing in. I remember they used to call them in Chicago blue laws, where car dealers for many, many years were not allowed to be open on Sunday. And liquor stores.
Sharon Gilbert
Yep.
Derek Gilbert
And, you know, eventually those were worn down to the point where, you know, businesses are now open seven days a week. Some are open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. But back in the day, you know, they. Every new moon and every Sabbath, the merchants were supposed to close down. And clearly in the Day of Amos, the merchants did not really respect the day. They just wanted to end so that not only could they return to their business practices, but their unjust business practices. False balances.
Sharon Gilbert
Yep.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
We're gonna cheat you under the sun.
Derek Gilbert
Nothing new under the sun.
Sharon Gilbert
I mean, think about the things you buy off the shelf that are in big boxes, and they've got a little window that you can see part of the item. And then you get open the box, you get it home, and you realize the item is the size of the window.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
The rest of it's just packing and packing.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Verse 7. Yahweh has sworn by the pride of Jacob. Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who dwells in it. And all of it rise like the Nile and be tossed about in sync again like the Nile of Egypt. In other words, the annual Nile floods rises up and goes away again. And on that day, this is the day of Yahweh. This is the day of judgment, the day of Armageddon. And on that day declares the Lord Yahweh, I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.
Sharon Gilbert
This is a big thing. And we see similar language elsewhere that Joel2 exactly refers to the darkening of the sun and the moon.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. And we need to remember that. Excuse me. Because there's been a real fascination over the last few years with blood moons, which happen, what, two or three times a year?
Sharon Gilbert
They do, but it is something to watch for. It's just that not everyone is it.
Derek Gilbert
But the blood moons that are really significant are the ones that occur when the sun is also darkened, which makes no sense. And we haven't seen that yet. Yeah. Because if the sun is darkened, there's no light to reflect the moon. For the moon to reflect.
Sharon Gilbert
And may I suggest. Again, this is my opinion, but may I suggest that this is more than just, hey, I'm going to affect the light on the Earth. It's also a judgment on the sun and the moon.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Which were worshiped.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
In Israel. In the North Kingdom.
Derek Gilbert
Yes. Yeah. Again. Excuse me again. This. This autoimmune issue clouds my vocal cords,
Sharon Gilbert
makes you sound really gravelly and, you
Derek Gilbert
know, almost like Lance Henriksen. Yeah, yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
It's not the beef.
Derek Gilbert
Verse 10. I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. I will bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head. I will make it like the morning for an only sun, and the end of it like a bitter day. Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord. Yahweh. When I will send a famine on the land. Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Yahweh, an end to prophetic revelation.
Sharon Gilbert
I keep telling you these things, but I'm not. Look, I'm going to stop, just not saying anything else.
Derek Gilbert
Just like when Saul went searching for the word of God and. Sorry, nope, not talking to you. Here. I'll send the spirit of Samuel. And he's got a bad. He's got a message you don't want. Verse 12. They shall wander from sea to sea, Dead Sea to the. To the Mediterranean, or the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.
Sharon Gilbert
This says, and the water shall be
Derek Gilbert
troubled from sea to sea, and from north to east. That's interesting. North being the direction of Mount Hermon and also Mount Zaphon. And the word, of course, is Sapphon.
Sharon Gilbert
Read all of 12.
Derek Gilbert
They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Yahweh, but they shall not find it.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, it sounds to me like this whole. This says it's very similar. And the waters shall be troubled from sea to sea, and from the north to the east shall men run hither and thither, seeking the word of the Lord. And they shall not find it. But this troubled from sea to sea. All of these are trying to seek some knowledge. And it doesn't seem to me that they're actually seeking it from Yahweh necessarily. I think they're just seeking some word. So they're going to a number of deities. The sun and the moon, they're gone. There's no word from Yahweh. We need to hear from our gods. Plural.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. And the northern kingdom of Israel was not following Yahweh necessarily. The golden calves or bulls, more probably. I think they were called calves because the Hebrew prophets, the faithful followers of Yahweh, were mocking the bull, bull, El, the father God of the Canaanites, whose sacred places were at Mount Hermon and at Beth El temple of El. I think that's who they may have been seeking, of course, east. The reason that east is significant because that's the direction of the rising sun, the direction of the opening of the doors of the temple of Yahweh, Solomon's Temple. In fact, every pagan temple as well in the ancient near east opened towards the east for the rising sun.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, if you keep reading, I think you're going to see that this idea continues.
Derek Gilbert
In that day, the lovely virgins and the young men shall faint for thirst. Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria. The word translated as sin or guilt sounds similar to the name Asherah.
Sharon Gilbert
That's really interesting. In the Septuagint, it says the propitiation, which means substitute.
Derek Gilbert
Okay. We need to remember that not only had Jeroboam the First, in the 10th century BC set up the sanctuaries of El, right, At Bethel and Dan, the base of Mount Hermon, Ahab set up an Asherah pole in Samaria.
Sharon Gilbert
Right. This idea of substitute, it's what our Lord does.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
He has appeased the anger. He has appeased Yahweh through his substitute. So what is that? The appeasement of Samaria. Is this going to this other deity?
Derek Gilbert
I would think, yeah. The Asherah.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah. This says in 14. Did you read all the 14? Sorry.
Derek Gilbert
No, sorry.
Sharon Gilbert
Finish it, please.
Derek Gilbert
Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria and say, as your God lives, O Dan Lee. Yep. And here's the other thing. As the way of Beersheba lives, they shall fall and never rise again. The way of Beersheba is listed in the Dictionary of Deities and Demons.
Sharon Gilbert
This says thy God, O Beersheva.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. This according to the scholar who put together the DDD Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible, said this has caused problems to interpreters since antiquity. The main problem with this text concerns the rendering of the word Derek, which means way, even if it's translated also with manner or custom. Both the use of the verb to swear as well as the context indicates strongly we have a reference to some kind of deity in the text. The context clearly demands that the reference is to some kind of deity. This was noted already by the Greek translator in the Septuagint, reflected by the Ho Theos Sao of the Septuagint.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah. Thy God.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Though other deities mentioned in Amos 8:14 cannot be discussed in depth here, it's important to notice that the goddess Ashima is not so problematic. Ashima, which was imported to Samaria by the Assyrian king. Let me back up, though. That's a rabbit trail. Despite the great differences. Let's see. Ashima. There's a possible connection between the direct the way of Amos 814and the goddess Derceto. D E R C E T O
Sharon Gilbert
or Derceto Ashima, a deity mentioned in Second Kings 17:30, worshiped by the people of Hamat, who were resettled in Samaria by the Assyrians.
Derek Gilbert
There's a Ugaritic text with a Hellenistic legend of Derceto and her daughter Semiramis, in particular related to the city of Ashkelon. Despite the great distance in time, the lexicographic similarities cannot be mere consequences. The cult of the goddess Der Sito is attested at several cities in the Hellenistic world. This may explain the presence of such a name or epithet. Also at Beersheba there are scholars, which is not far from Ashkelon, by the way.
Sharon Gilbert
That's true. Scholars sometimes connect Ashima with the Canaanite fertility goddess Asherah or the Mesopotamian God Ishum.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
So the name may actually be Semitic for name or fate. But Ashima sounds like Hashem. That's why they say name. Hashem means the name. I think. Bottom line is that this is not a. This is a fallen entity.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
That demands worship. And the. In verse 14 in the Septuagint, it does say, thy God o Dan, lives, and thy God o Beersheba lives. And they shall. This is what they're going to say. Go to them. They've got the answer.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
But they. They.
Derek Gilbert
These deities shall fall and never rise again.
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
And those who swear by them shall also fall.
Sharon Gilbert
And I would say that this is an already but not yet. By that we mean, if you're new to that phrase, we heard it first from Mike Heiser, and it just means it's something that was fulfilled in the past. Already fulfilled, but not yet fulfilled. There's a second half to it.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
So this second half is still to come.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, We. I once heard an interesting analogy from the pastor who married us, Glenn hart, back in St. Louis. That prophecy is often like looking at a range of mountains in the distance, and you can see a number of peaks lined up. But because of the distance being so far away, you lose perspective and you cannot see how near one might be to another one.
Sharon Gilbert
And it looks like one mountain.
Derek Gilbert
It may look like one mountain, but you may see. Okay, I can see separate peaks there. And it's only when you get closer that you realize that, oh, they're farther apart.
Sharon Gilbert
It was also taught by my pastor back in Dupont. Same idea. And it was not only that you can't see the distance between them, but sometimes beginning as you look, the nearer one looks really big, so it obscures. The distant one looks like one event, which is one reason that the two advents of Christ appear to be one in the Old Testament.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. You get right up on top and you realize, oh, the second one is a little further away. Okay, well, he's going to be back really, really soon. And then as you get even closer. Oh, wait, it's a little further off than we thought.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, exactly. But it is getting so, so close.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. All right, let's move on to Amos, chapter nine. The bottom line there is that, yes, Amos was condemning those in Israel who were turning to other deities. Asherah, El, and whoever or whatever was worshiped at Beersheba.
Sharon Gilbert
Okay, Chapter nine. Not getting any happier, I saw the Lord standing beside the altar. And he said, now, this is a different vision.
Derek Gilbert
This is in division, Right?
Sharon Gilbert
Right. This is the destruction of Israel. I saw the Lord standing beside. There's an alternate translation there or on. Either beside or on the altar. And he said, strike the capitals until the thresholds shake. Capitals as in A, L, S. Capitals as in the tops. The heads until the thresholds, that's the bottom. Shake and shatter them on the heads of all the people, or all of them. And those who are left of them, I will kill with a sword. Yes, Mr. Gilbert.
Derek Gilbert
Septuagint renders it quite differently. It's not capitals. It says, strike the smite, the mercy seat. In other words, strike the lid of the Ark of the Covenant.
Sharon Gilbert
That's entirely different. Yep, that is entirely different. And, okay, we're going to have to do a bunny trail here, but it's important one. If you're new to this, then please pay attention. If you've heard us say this before. You can go get a cup of coffee. But if you're new to this, please listen. When the Septuagint was translated in about 200 B.C. that gives us a Greek translation that shows Daniel was written before, you know, modern times.
Derek Gilbert
Many of the prophecies that were foretold by Daniel.
Sharon Gilbert
Right. The text that we have today, that, like the English Standard Version that I'm reading from right now, those are based on the Masoretic text. And that is a collection of manuscripts that were collected and put together and codified by the Masoretes. And Derek can tell you more about them if he wants to, but essentially a few things were tweaked here and there. Okay. We need an action scene here that shows David in a better light or a different light. The basic truth, the capital T, truth, wasn't altered because the Lord wouldn't allow that, but it. Because he, The Lord also preserved the Septuagint. He gave us that older version, which is a really important. That's why Derek and I compare them. So the Septuagint saying one thing. Mercy seat.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
And suddenly we get. Strike the capitals or the heads until the bottoms, the stretch, the threshold, shake. Why was that changed?
Derek Gilbert
That is a really, really good question. I think probably the Masoretes, which were just the Hebrew translators who completed the text that our Bibles are based on by about the year 900 A.D. so, what, 1100 years later than the Septuagint,
Sharon Gilbert
Long time over a millennium later.
Derek Gilbert
Didn't want to suggest that God himself would say, strike the mercy seat. Strike the Ark of the Covenant, the lid of the Ark of the Covenant, Especially if he is standing on it, which the Septuagint says. The Lexim Septuagint actually says by the mercy seat or by the Ark of the Covenant or on. But it's on in the Brenton. So they rendered it both ways. The Brenton says on the Lexham, which is the more modern Septuagint translation, says by which. Just another illustration of the difficulty translators have in nailing it precisely to what the original was. That's my guess, is just the later Jewish scholars feel.
Sharon Gilbert
Oogie.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. It's like, no. Hashem would never do that.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, it. What. What I'm reminded of in this verse is when David approached the threshing floor of Orano and saw the angel of the Lord standing over it with a sword in his hand.
Derek Gilbert
Right, right.
Sharon Gilbert
Suddenly I'm picturing that.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. I think standing on the altar is
Sharon Gilbert
probably because he's telling someone to strike it. Strike it.
Derek Gilbert
Strike. You know, smite the mercy seat and the gateway or the porch shall be shaken. And. Yeah, it's clearly. This is an image of judgment, like the angel of the Lord over the threshing floor of Arauna.
Sharon Gilbert
So, yes, strike the capitals. This is what it says in the esv until the threshold. Shake and shatter them on the heads of all the people and those. And shatter them. That's interesting. That's an odd way to put it. And shatter them. What takes. Take the struck capitals and the thresholds and throw them on the heads of the people and shatter them on the heads of all the people. And those who are left of them, I will kill with a sword. And not one of them shall flee away. Not one of them shall escape. If they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them. If they climb up to heaven, from there, I will bring them down. If they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, from there I will search them out and take them.
Derek Gilbert
And obviously, Mount Carmel was a sacred location. Carmel means vineyard of El.
Sharon Gilbert
And if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea, there, I will command the serpent, the drag, and it shall bite them. And if they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword and it will kill them. And I will fix my eyes upon them for evil and not for good. This is a major judgment.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
No matter where you go, I will find you. And might I suggest that this is a judgment not only on humans.
Derek Gilbert
True. Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
The spirits behind the image. Humans can't ascend to heaven on their own. They can't go down to Sheol on their own. Yes. You could say this is just language that makes it clear you can't hide from me. But when the Lord judges humans, sometimes there are deities behind them that are also targets.
Derek Gilbert
In the cosmology of the ancient world, there was. I mean, you could say this is just picturesque language, but I don't recall reading anything in the 10 years we've been studying this. The cosmology of the ancient Israelites, or ancient Mesopotamians, where humans, with rare exception, were ever allowed up into the heavens.
Sharon Gilbert
I know.
Derek Gilbert
I think the one exception was the myth of Adapa, the Mesopotamian myth, who was sort of like the Adam character among Mesopotamians. And he was called up there because he broke the wing of the south wind and he had to answer to Anu, the sky God. And because he was a righteous man, they were going to offer him a drink that would give him immortality. But he had been Told by Enki, the clever God, the God of the Abzu, the abyss, not to drink anything while he was up there. And so humanity missed out on immortality, which is a twisting of the story of what happened in Eden where Adapt, Adam and Eve got kicked out for trying for eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. So. Yeah, but this was not a thing. Humans did not ascend into heaven. Like we have this idea today in the modern world. Well, if you're good enough, you get to go to heaven. First of all, that's wrong. If you accept Jesus Christ is when you are, you know, allowed into glory. But yeah, heaven was not a thing for humans in the ancient world.
Sharon Gilbert
Now humans don't get in.
Derek Gilbert
So I think you're right.
Sharon Gilbert
When you are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ and after you die, yes, you do go into heaven with him. But we're talking about as a human being, right? Flesh and blood don't get in there on their own.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
You don't just climb up.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. And in the ancient world, again, it was not a thing. Those who went into heaven were the spirits who attended God. Right, so this is. Yeah, he's dealing with the spirits that have disobeyed.
Sharon Gilbert
I think so too. Verse 5. The Lord Yahweh, Adonai, Yahweh of hosts. This is a reference to military behavior.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. God of armies.
Sharon Gilbert
He who touches the earth and it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn, and all of it rises like the Nile and sinks again like the Nile of Egypt. Repeating what was in verse eight.
Derek Gilbert
Mm.
Sharon Gilbert
Who builds up. Who builds his upper chambers in the heavens and founds his vault upon the earth. Who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth. Yahweh is his name. I just want to remind you of who I am, in case you've forgotten Israel, you know, been worshiping these other fallen deities so long, you think they do these things? Nope. I do them. Verse 7. Are you not like the Cushites to me, O people of Israel? The Cushites, the sons of Cush, The Ethiopians.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Are you not like the Cushites? To me, O people of Israel declares Yahweh. Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt? And the Philistines from Captor and the Syrians from Kier.
Derek Gilbert
Captor is Crete, the island of Crete. Interesting, the. That Brenton. Lancelot. Brenton's translation says Cappadocia, which is the middle of Asia Minor.
Sharon Gilbert
Oh, yeah, that's entirely different.
Derek Gilbert
But no captor is the island of Crete. The origin point of the Philistines is generally agreed now by archaeologists to agree with the Bible that they came from the the Aegean Sea by way of crete.
Sharon Gilbert
Verse 8. Behold the eyes of the Lord of Yahweh, God Adonai. Yahweh are upon the sinful kingdom. And I will destroy it from the surface of the ground. Except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, declares Yahweh.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
That is important.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. The people in Israel today are not fake Jews.
Sharon Gilbert
We had a wonderful conversation a few days ago, recording four programs with our good friend Dr. Michael Lake. And he stresses again and again, the remnant. The remnant. This is what's discussed here. I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob. There is a remnant out there?
Derek Gilbert
Yep.
Sharon Gilbert
Verse 9. For behold, I will command and shake the house of Israel among all the nations as one shakes with a sieve. But no pebble shall fall to the earth, and the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say disaster shall not overtake meet us. But in that day.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, now we're talking about not the day of Yahweh, but a day of restoration.
Sharon Gilbert
I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name.
Derek Gilbert
You know, somebody the other day on social media say that he had read somewhere that Israel would actually be destroyed by Edom. No, I was like, no. Obadiah prophesies the destruction of Edom.
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
Here we've got Yahweh saying Israel would possess Edam, and in fact, Edam was destroyed by the last king of Babylon, Nebinidus, in the 540s BC.
Sharon Gilbert
Might I suggest that, first of all, let me read the little note here on verse 12, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and Edom and all the nations who are called by my name. Now, the note says the Septuagint, and compare this to Acts 15:17, that the remnant of mankind and all the nations who are called by my name may seek the Lord.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, that's another interesting change, because in The Septuagint, verse 12 reads that the remnant of men and all the Gentiles upon whom my name is called, Lexham, renders it so that the remnant of the people. And it is Anthropom in the Greek.
Sharon Gilbert
Mankind.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. So the. So the Masoretic text changed it to Edom.
Sharon Gilbert
Yes.
Derek Gilbert
Which was. And again, this is a. This is a rabbinic teaching that the Edomites are the ultimate evil. That the Roman Catholic Church is Edom. And. Yeah. So, no, there is no prophecy that Edom would overwhelm and become Israel. And this was the justification this person gave me for claiming that the Israelites today, the Israelis of today, are just. No, they're Edomites. They're not actual Jews. What?
Sharon Gilbert
Now, what I find also interesting about this verse is the teaching, and I think there's some merit to it, that when the Lord says, when you see all these things happen, don't even stop to get your cloak, just run.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, this is.
Sharon Gilbert
Those in Jerusalem, run. This is when the. The Antichrist goes in and proclaims himself to be a deity. And you will now worship me. It's about midpoint during the tribulation period. Many believe. So you just flee to protection. That many believe is in Petra. Yep, that's in Edam. There will be a remnant hiding there.
Derek Gilbert
Yes, exactly. And we'll talk about our Israel tour and the possibility that you will have to see that location here in just a little bit.
Sharon Gilbert
And when you see it. Oh, my goodness.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Verse 13. Behold, the days are coming, declares Yahweh, when the plowman shall overtake the reaper and the treader of grapes, him who sows the seed. Now, this is strange. So generally, you plow, then you reap.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
But if you're overtaking the reaper, then it's like it's. What. What is this?
Derek Gilbert
It. Basically, the land is producing its fruit before you even have time to plow.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah. And the mountain shall drip sweet wine and all the hills shall flow with it. I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel. Underline that.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
And they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them. They shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant them on their land, and they shall never again be uprooted out of the land that I have given them, says Yahweh, your God. After saying, I'm going to bring in another nation and they're going to just make you wail. People will be. There will be bodies in the temple. And he promises, but because I love you, because I am the Father. Father standing, waiting for you to come home with a ring in your hand. In my hand. Ready to put it on your hand. Because that is how I see you. This isn't forever. There is a remnant who will come back.
Derek Gilbert
And it's not because. It's not because the Israelites or the Jews deserve it any more than we deserve the grace offered to us by Jesus Christ.
Sharon Gilbert
We don't just. We have not earned that ring.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
No, we have not earned those crowns.
Derek Gilbert
We are covered with pig mess and we are crawling back home begging for forgiveness. In fact, in Ezekiel 36, I would suggest this is why God does it therefore say to the house of Israel, thus says the Lord, Yahweh. It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am Yahweh, declares the Lord. Yahweh, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes, I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries, bring you into your own land. That's why he did it. And Amos was seeing the same thing 200 years before Ezekiel.
Sharon Gilbert
Isn't that wonderful?
Derek Gilbert
Yes. In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen. And again, it's not because they deserve it any more than we deserve anything. So we Christians, and this is the warning that's In Romans, chapter 11, about the branches that were broken off. As long as we don't get arrogant towards those branches like Nelson on the Simpsons cartoon. Yeah, exactly. As long as we treat them lovingly, God will continue in his loving grace towards us. Yes, but we need to remember, just as those branches have been broken off, he can graft them back in again and he can break us off. So. And this is what I find so disturbing about this rise of anti Semitism in the church.
Sharon Gilbert
Me too. Me too. In fact, getting back to the discussion of Adam, I don't know when Obadiah is coming up, but Obadiah is the next book. We've just finished with Amos. Obadiah begins with a vision about Edom.
Derek Gilbert
It is a prophecy of the destruction of Edom. I'm going to check real quick and look ahead. It's. Well, not for a couple of months anyway. We've got to get back into second Chronicles and more Isaiah, which is great.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
Because Micah then back into second Chronicles and second Kings.
Sharon Gilbert
It's really, really wonderful. Derek and I are reading in chronological order the order in which things happened.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
And it really helps you to understand why David writes a particular psalm, what's going on in his life at the time. How different prophets are talking to the north and the south at the same time. Sometimes prophets both in the north talking about the north. But here's what one thing about spoilers. When we do get to Obadiah, behold, I will make you speak into Edom. I shall make you small among the nations and you shall be utterly despised. The pride of your heart has deceived you who dwell in the clefts of the rock. That's what Petra means.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. In Greek. That's exactly what it is. Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
So, yeah. Interesting stuff, Adam. Is modern day Jordan part of its southern Jordan? And right now what's going on in the Middle East? Jordan has since October 7 been acting as a buffer between Iran's anger and Hamas's joint anger with, frankly, they're all part of the irgc, which comes out of Iran, but the. The surrounding nations that want to erase Israel. The King of Jordan has been standing with Israel.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
And to me, this is prophetic. It's a fulfillment of prophecy.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, I agree. We had talked about this on one of the Skywatch TV episodes here recently when in fact ones that just aired over the last few weeks. Joe Artis Horn.
Sharon Gilbert
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Derek Gilbert
Called on us. I need to reach out to Darren Geisinger who was supposed to be the guest. I know that day he came down with the flu. Probably the same strain that we got. Knocked us for a loop.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
Joe said, look, we've already got everything scheduled for tomorrow, but Darren can't make it. Would you mind coming in and just talking about Israel? So we did three episodes on what's going on over there, and they came out to be really, I think, powerful episodes.
Sharon Gilbert
I think very important, your studies. The Lord has called you to write this book. These two parts, book one and book two, that you have really been digging
Derek Gilbert
into this Psalm 83. We were asked, has the Psalm 83 war are we in this now? And that occurred course is a study that Bill Salus initiated some years back. And I think it was very insightful of Bill.
Sharon Gilbert
Me too.
Derek Gilbert
Psalm 83 prophesies a conflict between Israel and its nearby neighbors. And some of the nations may be a little, you know, difficult to interpret. Like the Hagrites. Okay. Hagar, the Bond, servant of Sarah, Egyptian Gibal. That's a city in what is now modern day Lebanon. So you could interpret that as Hezbollah, things like that. And our thought was, well, maybe the Psalm 83 war has already taken place. When you think about this Israel has fought several wars against all of those coalitions since 1946. Really? There was a civil war taking place in what was then called Palestine. And then, of course, when Israel declared independence on May 14th of 1948, immediately all of its Arab neighbors attacked, including as far away as Iraq. And that would include some of the nations that are mentioned there, you know, Assyria. So it could be the Psalm 83 war has already happened, or that there
Sharon Gilbert
are phases to it.
Derek Gilbert
Or that there are phases to it. But in Psalm 83, if I remember correctly, it is prophesied that there are certain before I speak, and then I have to go back and correct myself. Let me look up Psalm 83 really fast.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, I'll sit here and drink some of my delicious coffee.
Derek Gilbert
You made some great coffee this morning. Yes. Well, no. The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, those could be the Bedouins of the south. Moab, which is part of Jordan today, but further north, and Ammon, which is northern Jordan. Anyway, they are all part of this coalition. I'm thinking of Daniel 11, where the tents of Edom and Moab escape the destruction of the wars of what looks like the wars of Antichrist at the end of Daniel 11, beginning at verse 36.
Sharon Gilbert
And those of us who think that Petra might be the refuge, that may be why it's protected.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, yeah. There may yet be a Psalm 83 conflict, which I wrote about in Bad Moon Rising, which is about, you know, Islam and spirits behind it. That would be interpreted as the Gog Magog war of Ezekiel 38 and 39, which would then perhaps lead to the rise of a very dynamic Israeli leader who is then celebrated as the Moshiach by the rabbis, the ultra Orthodox who are looking for Messiah, some who have been saying for almost 15 years now he's here, he just hasn't revealed himself yet. So there were some who thought the Syrian civil war was the conflict of Gog and Magog. So we're living in prophetic times that even Jewish religious scholars are seeing that we're close to the end. But yeah, the neighbors of Israel, Jordan in particular, playing a prophetic role. It is interesting that King Abdullah has. Well, let's put it this way. He, like Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, recognized that the big threat to their stability, their kingdom's stability, is Iran, or at least not Iran the nation, but the. The Islamic leadership of Iran.
Sharon Gilbert
Right. And I know many of you, and we thank you for this, have said that you miss 5 and 10 because that was your source for what's going on in the world. And Derek would do that five days a week because he spent about six to seven hours every day researching, writing, putting it together, the video.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
All of that took a lot of energy and. Because we'll get to the OG report in a minute, but it took way too much energy. And he. He and I really prayed about it. We talked about it a lot. And it seems the Lord has said, I'm going to force you to sit in a chair and write. Because I think this book, Books one and book two of the War of the Watchers is the name of it. Book one will be out this fall, maybe late summer.
Derek Gilbert
August.
Sharon Gilbert
August. Well, there you go. And book two is still being written, but I feel like if there's such a thing as a magnum opus, this may be your magnum opus. So those of you who have said you're missing 5 and 10, thank you for that very much. Derek may try to do a weekly update from the big red chair in which he sit. In fact, it may be called the big red chair.
Derek Gilbert
I've already got a logo news from the big red chair.
Sharon Gilbert
Ah, there you go. See, Big red chair is right there for you. But you do have. Honey, you do have a wonderful way of encapsulating what's important and connecting it to Bible prophecy.
Derek Gilbert
Well, that's. That's what the Lord has called us to do. I mean, and you've, I think, termed it correctly. Theo politics, what we see in the news each day, it's just shadows of the real conflict taking place outside the limits, beyond the limits of our sight.
Sharon Gilbert
Right. We have to look at the spirits behind.
Derek Gilbert
Right. We wrestle not against flesh and blood. That's what Paul meant. Principalities, powers, cosmic rulers over this present darkness. He's not talking about political parties.
Sharon Gilbert
Right. And we're just sheep wearing the Lord's armor.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
You know, I feel like David sometimes trying to put on, you know, that giant armor. The Lord's armor is spectacular.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Yep.
Sharon Gilbert
It. We know we don't physically pick it up. It's not a physical thing in the room. I've got a little plastic toy helmet that I got one time and put it on, and I realized I looked kind of crazy in it, but I should wear it on the desk sometime. And just here, Joe, this is my hat for today. But we are blessed to be covered in his blood.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
That. That is really the beginning. So if you don't know Jesus Christ yet, as your savior, we encourage you to read the book of John, the gospel of John. It's in the second half of the Bible and you will see there how you understand. And also First Corinthians 15.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, the first few verses of First Corinthians 15. It's very, very simple. I mean, we go down some long rabbit trails here. And I hope we never convey the idea that you've got to be some sort of a scholar. Neither of us are credentialed in Bible studies or, you know, have a theological divinity degree or master's, anything like that.
Sharon Gilbert
Just read the Bible, right?
Derek Gilbert
And use some of the tools, the commentaries that are available out there. The Faith Life Study Bible, really, I think cutting edge as far as Bible commentaries go. It's available for free. You can find it at Biblia B I B l I a biblia.org and follow along that way. But yes, First Corinthians 15. Paul summarized it very quickly. I would remind you, brothers and the word there. Brothers can also mean brothers and sisters of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved. If you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance, what I also received. Here's the money. That Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures. That he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures. That is the gospel by which you are being saved.
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
Accept that historic fact and that is all you need. God will sort everything out. Make everything else clear from there.
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
Accept that you are being saved.
Sharon Gilbert
Yes. And Ephesians 6, which lists the armor beginning in verse 11, it lists the armor that we wear. The first one is the helmet of righteousness. This protects your head. It's the big.
Derek Gilbert
Protects you mind from all of the distractions.
Sharon Gilbert
But it's not our righteousness.
Derek Gilbert
No, no, no.
Sharon Gilbert
It's his. That's my point. It's his armor that I wear.
Derek Gilbert
Yes, yes. It is nothing that we do. Gosh. What is it? Ephesians 5, where it goes into we are being saved. We are saved by grace, not by works. So that no one can boast.
Sharon Gilbert
All of Ephesians is so important.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. So it's really simple. Do not let our weird rabbit trails. We can't help it leave. You think that you've got to somehow understand all of this in order to be saved. No, it's very simple. Jesus died for your sins in accordance with the scriptures. And he rose again physically. He was buried and rose again physically on the third day. Why is that important? The rest of First Corinthians 15 lays it out. It's because we all someday be resurrected just as Christ was.
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly. And a three year old could get it. A three year old could understand it.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
A three year old who's singing Jesus loves me.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
Understands the gospel.
Derek Gilbert
Yes. And for me, because I'm a slow learner, I want to see the evidence. It was about 35 when it finally registered with me. Yeah, I accepted Jesus at the age of 12. But it wasn't until I read the case for Christ, read about how Jesus, half brother James in John 7:5, did not believe in him. And yet according to the Pharisee Josephus, the Jewish historian in the first century, writing that James was martyred. Why would he do that if he didn't believe in Jesus?
Sharon Gilbert
Right.
Derek Gilbert
Oh, we read in 1st Corinthians 15 that the risen Christ appeared first to Peter and then to James like you were dead three days ago. You were dead.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, you were obviously dead. We knew you were practically died before you were put on the cross. Yeah, he was beaten until he looked like, you know, well, something hanging from a hook.
Derek Gilbert
With the way the Romans put stuff on their whips to rip the flesh off, when they pulled the whip back, it's likely his ribs were exposed.
Sharon Gilbert
He should have bled to death, but it was all meant to be right on that cross.
Derek Gilbert
So James saw that and believed and 30 years later he was willing to die rather than recant his testimony. So when I read that and finally registered, that was the moment the whole world shifted on its axis for me. So anyway,
Sharon Gilbert
and I'll tell you what, the other thing is that. I'm sorry to interrupt you.
Derek Gilbert
Go ahead.
Sharon Gilbert
If you are listening to this and you have never accepted Christ as your savior, if you want to know from other people what their experiences are, you can either share this in comments to the YouTube video or if you're listening on the app, go into the group and ask, you know, I'm brand new.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Can you tell me what do I do now?
Derek Gilbert
Yes. Where do I get.
Sharon Gilbert
Where do I do you know of a church in my area, things like that? Because you're. We've got listeners from all over the world.
Derek Gilbert
We. Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
We're not huge, but we do have a few people out there. Both of you.
Derek Gilbert
That's it. In fact, the reason we started this Bible study back in 2014 was because people were coming to us at conferences and saying, do you know where I can find a church that teaches verse by verse? Exegesis Right. Which means drawing out from the Scriptures rather than reading into the Scriptures. Well, what does this mean to me? Well, it doesn't matter. What did it mean to Amos?
Sharon Gilbert
Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
That's what matters.
Sharon Gilbert
Why did the Holy Spirit inspire this?
Derek Gilbert
And even worse, as we talked yesterday on PID Radio, Narcissus, how do I read myself into the Scriptures?
Sharon Gilbert
Yes.
Derek Gilbert
And that's dangerous because there are sadly, churches that teach it kind of that way.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah. And also if you're new me, PID Radio, we do a new one every Saturday. Most Saturdays. Occasionally we'll take a Saturday off, but that is where we take a look at the spiritual truths behind the headlines.
Derek Gilbert
That's correct. Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Look at theology, theo politics behind the geopolitics.
Derek Gilbert
So, yeah, plenty of that. All on the. All on the app, all of our content, of course, the. The weekly View from the Bunker podcast. That's my podcast. And the monthly Iron and Myth. I'll have to separate those out as a series and put those on the app as a separate series.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, I think so too. By the way, speaking out of the app, do you have any questions?
Derek Gilbert
Oh, yes, had a couple that I had sorted out and I'm glad.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, you can. There is spot where you can ask questions of me and you can also just directly ask them of Derek. And we sometimes forget, but we do try to remember to list one of those.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Jill asked a question, said, hi, Derek, I'm praying for your health and hoping you're feeling better every day. Thank you, Jill. Certainly since February, it's been two months now since I went into the hospital for pneumonia and feeling much, much better, still have only gained back about what, 11 of the 20 pounds.
Sharon Gilbert
I know. In fact, this morning you'd lost 0.4 pounds even though you ate a lot yesterday.
Derek Gilbert
Ate a lot yesterday. Big old omelette for breakfast and a double smash burger for lunch. So.
Sharon Gilbert
With cheese.
Derek Gilbert
With cheese and extra bacon for breakfast too. So not quite sure what's going on. I think the. My metabolism got ramped up even further after the pneumonia.
Sharon Gilbert
I think so too. I've read studies that show post nice day out there. Motorcyclists post pneumonia or post any sort of big hospitalization. Sometimes your immune system will go, hey, let's just ramp into high gear now.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
And that's what's attacking your nerves.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, well. But certainly feeling a lot better and stronger and working to put the weight back on his muscle.
Sharon Gilbert
And not just you do crunches and push ups and you work out on the recumbent body yeah.
Derek Gilbert
Jill asks First John 5:16 talks about a sin that isn't punishable by death or that are there some sins that aren't as bad as others? What are those sins? That's confusing. I didn't realize there were different degrees of sin. I thought the wages of sin is death, no matter what the sin is. First John 5:16 reads, if anyone sees his brother committing a sin that is not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life. To those who commit sins that do not lead to death, there is sin that leads to death. I do not say that one should pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin. But there is sin that does not lead to. To death. That could be kind of confusing.
Sharon Gilbert
It depends on what death is meant there.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. According. Now, again, I'm going to look at the commentary, the faith life study.
Sharon Gilbert
Physical death or spiritual death.
Derek Gilbert
Sin not leading to death. A general sin. Yeah. This almost is the kind of verse where you could interpret it as like the Roman Catholic doctrine. There's venal sin and then mortal sin.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah. What is the. The address again?
Derek Gilbert
First John 5:16. It's 5:16 and 17 is what I read. John identifies a sin that cannot result in forgiveness and eternal life because it flatly rejects God's grace. This kind of sin likely includes denying that Jesus is the son of God and God's anointed one. In other words, the Messiah, the Christ.
Sharon Gilbert
That might also. Also refer to blasphemy. Exactly.
Derek Gilbert
It might also involve denying Jesus humanity. This kind of sin dismisses the atoning, sacrifice, or significance of God's, of Christ's work on the cross and rejects the possibility of sin in the life of a Christian. So, you know, God isn't saying, or John isn't saying, forgive me. John is not saying that people commit such a sin, cannot receive God's grace. Instead, he's explaining that those who continue to hold this belief are on the path to death. Yeah, so if you say once, well, I don't believe that Jesus was, you know, human, or I don't believe that the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity, whatever. Saying that once does not mean you are forever condemned. That's not what John is saying here. What he's saying is if you continue on that belief, then you're on the path to destruction. Had some interaction on the social medias with a fellow who believes that, okay, yeah, Jesus is real and I follow Jesus. But he believes that Jesus is a space alien, that Yahweh is his evil brother, and that there's another Father out there, Perhaps Anu, the Mesopotamian sky God, I don't know. But some other father God out there who is literally the Father of Jesus, instead of Jesus being an eternal, created being part of the Trinity. You know, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God. John 1:1, that guy, even though he says he's following Jesus, is following a different Jesus. And sadly, according to John here in First John 5, he is committing a sin that leads to death. John, back to the Faith Life Study Bible. John likely has in mind his opponent's misconception of Jesus as someone who merely appeared as a human and their subsequent abandonment of true faith.
Sharon Gilbert
If you go on to verse 18, starting at 17, I'm reading in the Revised Standard Version, by the way, all wrongdoing is sin. But there is sin which is not mortal. It's referring to mortal sins and not mortal sins. Right, verse 18. We know that everyone born of God does not sin, but he, capital H, who was born of God, keeps him. In other words, we're covered with the blood of Christ.
Derek Gilbert
Right.
Sharon Gilbert
Doesn't mean that we can just go out and do whatever we want to know. The Holy Spirit himself actually instructs us.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
And the evil One does not touch him. We know that we are of God and the whole world is in the power of the evil One. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding to know him who is true. And we are in him who is true in His Son, Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, yeah. John is not saying that when you you're born of God, that you don't sin. That is also a misunderstanding of what John is saying here.
Sharon Gilbert
Right.
Derek Gilbert
It means that we are protected or kept by God. Because John writes elsewhere, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. So yes, we do sin, but we recognize those sins and then we ask God for forgiveness. We don't say, well, I'm of the elect, so I can't sin. Everything I do is fine. No, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves. So what John is saying here essentially is if you deny. The essence of who Jesus is, fully God and fully man, if you blaspheme a against the Holy Spirit and hold to those beliefs and continue in those beliefs, like again, this fellow who believes that Jesus is an alien who's coming back for us in spaceships, he says he's following Christ, but he's not following.
Sharon Gilbert
He's following a different Jesus.
Derek Gilbert
He's following a different Jesus and it's preaching a different gospel, which Paul said. Anyone who does that, even an angel, Galatians 11, let him be anathema and let him be eternally cursed.
Sharon Gilbert
Yep.
Derek Gilbert
So, Jill, very good question because I can see how 1st John 5, 16, 17, 18 could really confuse you. And again, this. That's. I. I haven't studied this, but I'd be willing to bet that this is where the Roman Catholic doctrine of venal sins and mortal sins comes from.
Sharon Gilbert
I agree. I agree. By the way, the word death in this chap. This verse is thanatos.
Derek Gilbert
Yep. Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Which of course is death.
Derek Gilbert
But rider on the pale horse.
Sharon Gilbert
Yep.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, exactly. Well, good, good, good question. Thank you. If you want to ask questions of us, please feel free to either pose those in the app. They're questions for Sharon, questions for Derek. And then you can also do that by sending us email@infoilberthouse.org that's infoilberthouse.org Yep. Well, we got a couple of conferences will be out this year and looking forward to them. Now, now that I've got an idea for the outline of my talk which again will conclude with Joshua. And I am, I am predicting now that I will need Kleenex or my handkerchief there.
Sharon Gilbert
We'll make sure on the podium because
Derek Gilbert
I'm going to get. I'm going to get emotional. I can tell the go there for conference, which we are honored to be a part of again this year. Dr. Mike Spalding has been wonderful to invite us as part of this now for the last five years, I think.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, I know. Like one of these days he's going to say, I figured you guys out here. No, he's. He's such a good friend.
Derek Gilbert
You keep running overtime, Derek.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, you always do. In fact, I think I gave you the balance of my time one year.
Derek Gilbert
Yes, I yield the balance of my time to the gentleman from Missouri. Yeah. I got. Went over so far over one time leading into lunch that they were literally flashing the word stop.
Sharon Gilbert
Stop. I know. And you ask the people. Okay, I know you want to go to lunch, but keep talking, keep talking.
Derek Gilbert
I've got 15 more minutes. Keep talking. Yeah, the guys in the booth upstairs, stop. It was funny. I didn't. I said, okay, this year I'm not going to make you do that. So.
Sharon Gilbert
So.
Derek Gilbert
But we'll be there with our good friends, Pastor Carl gallups, Carl Teichrib, Dr. Greg Reed, John Haller, looking forward to hearing him, his I'll say again, his weekly prophecy update from the Fellowship Bible Chapel. Look it up on YouTube and subscribe to that channel as well. Does it every Sunday. They're probably streaming it live right now as we speak, but you'll be able to get it later today. Tom Hughes, Bible prophecy expert and messianic Jew Olivier Melnick, whose perspective right now will be very, very important. So that's July 24th and 25th at the harvest Revival center outside Dayton, Ohio. Brookville.
Sharon Gilbert
Yep.
Derek Gilbert
If you can't be there, streaming videos available and information and registration@gothereforconference.com go therefore conference.com and then two weeks later, the remnant rising 2.0 conference coming to Springfield, Missouri, which we love because we can drive to it. Flying is getting a little more difficult as we get older.
Sharon Gilbert
It is.
Derek Gilbert
But we are looking forward to being there. Both of us on the list to speak this time, along with Joe Horn, our good friend from Skywatch tv, Vicki Joy Anderson, who's also local to us, was talking about her with Dr. Jud Burton yesterday. She is his prize pupil at his Institute of Biblical Anthropology.
Sharon Gilbert
I'm not surprised at all.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, she is.
Sharon Gilbert
She is one of the brightest bulbs out there. She is a deep thinker and brilliant.
Derek Gilbert
Yes, yes, she is. Tracy Tennant, who's also from here in the Ozarks, talking she came out of the Church of Latter Day Saints and so she's got some insights as to the spirits behind that church.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
Tony Merkel, host of the Confessionals Podcast, John Pounders, host of now you See tv, Dave Hodges, host of the Common Sense show, our good friend Kenny C. And we look forward to seeing Kenny. He is such a joy.
Sharon Gilbert
Who doesn't love Kenny?
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, everybody loves Kenny.
Sharon Gilbert
I know.
Derek Gilbert
So anyway, and more speakers as well. Josh Totley, David Paxton, Patrick McCurdy, more information and registration and hearthewatchmen.com and again, if you can't be there, we really encourage you because it's a great facility, great place for a conference and a lot to do in the Springfield Branson area.
Sharon Gilbert
Oh, yeah.
Derek Gilbert
But more information@hearthewatchmen.com streaming video available for this conference as well.
Sharon Gilbert
Streaming for both. Oh, yeah, you said. Yeah. So we appreciate your prayers. And now for the og.
Derek Gilbert
Okay. I was going to mention the Israel tour.
Sharon Gilbert
Oh, sorry.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Because yes, even the OGs are going.
Derek Gilbert
We're still, you know, that's the plan at this point. Right.
Sharon Gilbert
It, it's a little more challenging because of what's going on with your health for you to walk here and there while we're in Israel. But we did it last time. You managed it last time. And I would say that you're even stronger as far as the workout you've been doing.
Derek Gilbert
Yep.
Sharon Gilbert
So Lord willing, we'll be leading it again. Lord willing that everything is politically favorable, that we're flights are not being canceled this and that if for some reason we cannot go this October, we will reschedule it for next spring.
Derek Gilbert
Right. And we're going to have that conversation with the Lipkins probably in the next few weeks. Within the next ten. Ten days. Two weeks. Yeah. Because some airlines have decided to hold off flights until August or September, even though Ben Gurion Airport is back open again. But there are airlines that are still squeamish. So we will, we will see. Because obviously we do not want to take you into a danger zone.
Sharon Gilbert
We do not. And we want you to be able to make your connections. For instance, you and I, last time we flew, I think it was last time. Or maybe it's the one. One before we connected in the Netherlands with, with kla, I think, or klm.
Derek Gilbert
Klm, yes.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, KLM has just. They've just canceled a bunch of their flights into Tel Aviv.
Derek Gilbert
Okay. Yeah. And United and American are both, you know, pushed off until late summer at the earliest. There was even a rumor that I just saw this come out this week, that United floated the idea, the president of United Airlines floated to President Trump the idea of a merger with America. American Airlines says no, that's not happening.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, I'd like to see that not happen either. You need alternatives.
Derek Gilbert
Right, right. Because that would command about 40% of the domestic airline market.
Sharon Gilbert
They do. And part of the reason for the cancellations is the war, to be honest. But the war also affects the ability to fuel up your plane.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
And that's important to you?
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
By the way, there was. I saw this left turn a bit. An all electric airline. All electric, I'm not joking. And all electric Trans Atlantic airline that folded almost before they got the first.
Derek Gilbert
Well, I'm not surprised and I'm glad I would not be, you know, I'm not flying on an all electric plane.
Sharon Gilbert
I shared that story last week and that was my comment. All electric.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Seriously, you can't just flew up fuel up in the middle of the Atlantic.
Derek Gilbert
That is. Yeah, that is crazy.
Sharon Gilbert
Anyway, so it seemed like a boondoggle to me.
Derek Gilbert
The green energy agenda is crazy. I would fly on a nuclear powered plane before I would fly in an electric.
Sharon Gilbert
I'd Try to fly on my own, Just flap my wings.
Derek Gilbert
Well, that's okay. So now the OG report.
Sharon Gilbert
And speaking of flapping your arms.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. So far, no noticeable side effects, really, to the higher dose of the high dose of corticosteroids that I'm on. I had been on a low dose and this was prescribed by my primary care physician, not the neurologist. Early on just to try to slow down my immune system. The dose has gone from 5 milligrams to 50. And that was on the recommendation of the neurologist. It's not what he prefers, but it's what the insurance company will cover at this point.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, insurance company. Everybody out there is going, oh, insurance company.
Derek Gilbert
I know they're dictating medicine to the doctors right now. My neurologist wants me to go on an intravenous infusion of immunoglobulin, which is. Which are antibodies that are donated by volunteers and that is intended to reset my immune system so it stops attacking my nerves. Prednisone may do the same thing. There's actually pretty good results. 60 to 80% of the people who go through this protocol will show improvement. And the reason the insurance company wants to go with the steroids first is because they're way cheaper, like insanely cheaper. The infusions are like, you know, for a year's worth without insurance, it's like a half million bucks almost.
Sharon Gilbert
So oddly enough, we don't have that.
Derek Gilbert
We. Yeah, we don't. So we were like, well, we're not doing that.
Sharon Gilbert
We got five bucks you wanted.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. The insurance company said, well, looked at applying to the company, in fact applied to the company that makes the immunoglobulin for financial aid. And they said, nah, you do too well.
Sharon Gilbert
So even though we don't do all that well, what's your threshold here?
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, you got to drive a 40 year old car instead of a 20 year old car.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
All right. So the insurance company said three months on the corticosteroids, and then if they don't work, then we will reconsider. So my view on this, I went back to the neurologist and said, can we just do the three months of steroids and either at the end of three months, we will have, I will have improved or we'll have. I've proved that my neurologist knew what he was talking about, so. And if it does show good improvement, they will taper me down to a maintenance dose. And then in January, I hit 65, get on Medicare. Medicare covers the infusions and then we can go to the infusions.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
The reason for the infusions, Fewer long term side effects. Corticosteroids can lead to some bad side effects.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, the infusions have side effects as well. Just about everything you do these days has something going on, but the bottom line is that the Lord has his hand upon you.
Derek Gilbert
Exactly. So we're moving in a positive direction. Not noticing any improvement yet, but according to what I've read, it's usually about three weeks in before you start seeing it.
Sharon Gilbert
Sometimes as much as three months.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, so we'll see, like I said, at the end of three months, by July, by the time of the conference in Ohio, I'll either be better or we'll be scheduling the first round of infusion.
Sharon Gilbert
There you go.
Derek Gilbert
So that's. That's the.
Sharon Gilbert
See, that's the way to look at it.
Derek Gilbert
Right?
Sharon Gilbert
Be positive. And your doctors are always amazed at how positive you are.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. Hey, and coming up, I've added another. Added another specialist. Two more specialists to my card. Yeah. Got nephrology when I was in, you know, the hospital, but also podiatry coming up now. Add podiatry to neurology, cardiology and pulmonology.
Sharon Gilbert
Yep.
Derek Gilbert
So, yeah, all the specialists.
Sharon Gilbert
Pretty exciting.
Derek Gilbert
Get all it on the punch card and, you know.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, I think one more and you get. Get a free one.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, that'd be great.
Sharon Gilbert
Maybe ice cream or something, A pop cup.
Derek Gilbert
Oh, hey, some of those lemon ices. Those lemon ices.
Sharon Gilbert
Those actually were pretty nice. Yeah. As far as I'm concerned. If you're wondering how I'm doing, still, my right eye kind of bugs me now and then, but I can live with that. And I'm seeing my rheumatologist soon and this to check up on the probable Sjogren's that's going on. I. Look, the Lord has allowed me and this is my big prayer. And if you would pray for this for me, I really appreciate it. Look, if my eye bugs me, I don't care. What I want to do is to be able to be strong enough to help Derek. That's it. I'm 73 years old. Please, Lord, just keep me to be strong. Help me to be strong enough.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
To be what Derek needs me to be.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
Well, and if that means I never write a book again, then that's the Lord's will. But, yes, I am writing book nine. I changed a bit of the plot, so that's slowed me down a bit more, too. But I'm Grateful for that because the time since I wrote the end of book eight and had all of nine plotted out and about half of it written, I've read more history and come across some stuff that's really interesting and I want to weave that in. So. And some of that has to do with Hitler, some of the other has to do with spiritual things that were going on at the time. Spring Hill Jack, in fact continued all through the 19th century and even to the early 20th. So this almost Mothman type of creature in the UK.
Derek Gilbert
In London.
Sharon Gilbert
In London, exactly. Yes. So Spring Hill Jack is probably going to be in there somewhere.
Derek Gilbert
That's interesting. Very interesting.
Sharon Gilbert
So anyway, thank you for all of your patience and all of your prayers, you guys. We really appreciate you.
Derek Gilbert
Amen. Amen to that. By the way, we mentioned that early in the beginning of the study today when my phone started dinging, our friend Ellie Cope, he was our bus driver in Israel last fall.
Sharon Gilbert
One of the nicest people on this earth.
Derek Gilbert
Oh my goodness, we fell in love with him. We've become good friends. He was sending me a message through WhatsApp. My dear brother, how are you? I haven't heard from you. How was the treatment? I feel much better. Eliko has had surgery to remove cancerous tumor and so far his treatment, his recovery is going very well. So he's, he's a rather stout fellow with a shaved head. I've noticed that a lot of Israeli men, they, they all wear black and they have shaved heads, a lot of them. But it's, he looks more intimidating than he is.
Sharon Gilbert
He's a pussycat.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. And he would, but he could, you know, get intimidating when he needed to be because sometimes we'd stop somewhere and a very pushy, say, salesman wanted to come on and sell cheap jewelry to the bus and Eliko would stand in the gap and say basic. I couldn't understand the Hebrew, but you could understand the message, stay off my bus. Uh huh, yeah, Like Harrison Ford, get off my bus plane.
Sharon Gilbert
It was like our guide, Yeshua Avital, that we just love him as well and he is also a pussycat, but he can be a lion if required. Don't mess with my people.
Derek Gilbert
Exactly. So yes, we are looking forward, we pray, to seeing Eliko again when we return to Israel. And so we've been exchanging news at least several times a week. So I will have a message for him as soon as we're done with our study today.
Sharon Gilbert
Also, by the way, a good friend of ours who is a messianic Jew, Ron Silberman, is going to be coming to the United States. Oh yeah, sort of Arkansas, Missouri area to visit with friends. And he said he would love to speak at your church.
Derek Gilbert
Yes, that's Ron. He is a correspondent for All Israel News, which is a news media operation based in Jerusalem founded by Joel Rosenberg, best selling author. Ron does reports from archaeological sites in Israel. By the way, it's spelled R A N if you want to look him up on Ron Silbermann. And he's got a fascinating testimony. He was one of our guides in 2023 and he heard me give a talk on the spirits of the Rephaim and some of the megalithic sites we were going to visit. And he came up to me afterwards and said, what kind of Christian are you?
Sharon Gilbert
He just hadn't been exposed to that before.
Derek Gilbert
Right. And so we became friends. We saw him when we were back last fall. He met us at Shiloh and while the rest of the group went on ahead, we just sat and talked with Ron for an hour, hour and a half.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah, long time.
Derek Gilbert
And so he's going to be here in June. He's looking for places to speak and he's going to speak on anti Semitism and what life is like. I think we talked about this before, what life is like in Israel for Christians. Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
He's a fascinating person.
Derek Gilbert
He really is brilliant.
Sharon Gilbert
This is an opportunity that if you are interested in that topic, if you want to ask what's. He lives in Tel Aviv. So he, he's on the ground. He sees the reaction of the more secular Jews in Tel Aviv versus what his Orthodox friends and Messianic friends are dealing with.
Derek Gilbert
So yeah, in fact, we met him there Hostage Square in 2024. Right.
Sharon Gilbert
We went there in the spring.
Derek Gilbert
We saw him there as well.
Sharon Gilbert
You and I had lunch with him, spent a lot of time.
Derek Gilbert
So we've become very good friends with Ron and he's looking for places to speak. Once we know the dates that he'll be here in June, we will make that known. And I'm going to reach out to some of our friends in television ministry to see if we can get him on TV to talk about what he does. But he does television for all Israel News and I encourage you to follow that channel on Telegram or on social media, Facebook X Telegram. And Ron's reports, which I've been sharing around are just really excellent. He goes to again, various places and shows how those sites illustrate in a visual way today the stories that we read in the Bible. So very much looking forward to seeing Ron over Here. It was funny. He said, I've got friends in the Ozarks. Well, Ron, the Ozarks are a big place.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
Well, here's where they live. Okay. That's three hours away from us. You can cover about three quarters of the distance from Dan to Beersheba in three hours. But that's the difference in scope between here and there.
Sharon Gilbert
I was looking to see if Ron has a substack, but I don't see it. Derek and I are both on substack and the links you can put. Put in the. The notes for this.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, I've been putting the links in the notes below.
Sharon Gilbert
Good.
Derek Gilbert
So you can follow us on Telegram and on Substack, our X accounts, all of our social media sites where we share things on mine.
Sharon Gilbert
I just started releasing the excerpts from the first book of the the Red Wing Saga series. So you eventually will get to read the entire series for free. If you want to subscribe to that. Doesn't cost you a dime to subscribe to my substack. If you want to volunteer and give something. Derek is going to show me how I can link to our Stripe account on there. I don't know how yet.
Derek Gilbert
Easy enough to do. We'll take care of that. And again, we just appreciate your support. And nothing that we put at our substack accounts. Sharon's is sharonkgilbert.substack.com and mine are, well, ours. Where we're sharing excerpts from our nonfiction books, plus all of our other content, video and audio, is gilberthouse.substack.com nothing behind the paywall. We appreciate your support. I was surprised when people started donating. It's like, okay, well, we'll just set this up and see what happens.
Sharon Gilbert
I know.
Derek Gilbert
And God bless all of you who have been so generous. It's really. It is very helpful and we truly, truly appreciate it. But again, it is not required because we know that everybody struggling right now, the economy's never as good as the government figures.
Sharon Gilbert
Right?
Derek Gilbert
But so, you know, we just. Let's give it away. That was a lesson we learned from Tom Horn. So close with a word of prayer. Father, thank you for bringing us together through your word. And we take to heart the warnings of the prophet Amos about not holding sacred your days, not holding sacred our relationship with you, but instead seeing obligations that get in the way of doing commerce and. Unfair commerce. Lord, we've always, all of us, been guilty at times of begrudging, or rather of grudgingly spending time with youh and time in youn word. So, Lord, we ask forgiveness because there is no greater priority than we should have than communing with youh.
Sharon Gilbert
You.
Derek Gilbert
We live in the world, but we are not of this world, Father. And it is through your word that we draw the strength and the knowledge to navigate this world which is temporarily under the control of the fallen one. As Satan offered all the kingdoms of this world to you, our Lord, if you would bow the knee. And you rejected that offer. You did not say he didn't have the authority to offer those kingdoms. And so, Lord, we must be aware that salvation will not come at the ballot box. Yes, we are to participate in the process, but understanding that ultimately our goal is not to win this life, but to attain the resurrection where we will become. We will be restored to your family like the prodigal son returning home. So, Father, we pray for wisdom, for strength, for the courage to speak and share the hope that we have in you, our Lord. But with gentleness and respect, we will not win anyone to the kingdom by browbeating those who do not yet know the gospel of salvation. May we reflect the love that you have shown us, Father, as the moon reflects the light of the sun. We don't generate that light ourselves, but help us not to hide it. May we love those who are unlovely. May we love those who are desperately in need of your love. Those who may not look like us, those who are hurting and broken. May we aid the widows and the orphans as you commanded your people, who, as we read today, turn their backs on the poor and downtrodden, buying and selling them for a pair of sandals. Lord, may we learn from your word today and take these lessons with us as we go from this place and we ask your blessing as we go in Jesus name. Amen.
Sharon Gilbert
Amen.
Derek Gilbert
I
Sharon Gilbert
love you. And I forgot to ask you what tonight's VFTB is going to be.
Derek Gilbert
Well, it's going to be a little bit of a different discussion as Iron and Myth returns for number 49. We've been doing this for more than four years now. Brian Godawa and Doug Van Dorn. Sadly, Dr. Judd Burton tried to connect with his Samsung tablet again and we we finally learned after months of Jud having connection issues that the app that we use to produce that podcast doesn't play well with Samsung tablets. Judd finally broke down and invested in a laptop, so that should be corrected for next month. But anyway, this one is kind of in Brian's wheelhouse because he is an award winning Hollywood screenwriter in addition to a best selling novelist. And we talk about demons and how they are portrayed in Hollywood film. So movies like the Exorcist, the Conjuring Series, the Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us from Evil. Nefarious movie I just watched recently and I would recommend to you, listener. Yes, it's a movie about demon possession, but it is not spectacular in the way or sensationalized in the way that the Exorcist or any of the other movies are. And in that respect, it doesn't get involved. It's no gore, no very little violence.
Sharon Gilbert
Right.
Derek Gilbert
No profanity, believe it or not. And it has a Christian message to it.
Sharon Gilbert
It's sort of looking at the C.S. lewis.
Derek Gilbert
Yes.
Sharon Gilbert
Book, but updated.
Derek Gilbert
Right. It's based on a book called A Nefarious Plot, which is sort of an updated version of the Screwtape Letters, but it's set in a prison setting and the depiction of the demonized character based on the interviews that we've had with Deliverance ministers like Russ Dizdar, Tom Dunn, Vicki Joy Anderson, a new guest I've got coming up in a week or two, Corey Serrano. Much more realistic and thus more frightening, in my view.
Sharon Gilbert
We've also talked to Greg Reed, of course, but also Troy Brewer about it. That was a fascinating conversation. We need to get him on and talk about that. Yes, it's very, very much like what Russ Dizdar told us.
Derek Gilbert
Exactly. Even a Deliverance minister I had as a guest years ago named Michael Cummins from the uk.
Sharon Gilbert
Yes.
Derek Gilbert
You don't see in Deliverance the kind of impossible physical contortions and spewing of pea soup and all that. So Nefarious depicts that more realistically. And I would really encourage people to watch it because it does show it's a real thing. It's. I mean, yes, it's a fictional portrayal, but it's more realistic than the Hollywood movies based on a true story.
Sharon Gilbert
Right.
Derek Gilbert
Like Emily Rose and Paranormal Activity the Exorcist. Exactly. Yeah. Those were sensationalized. So anyway, that is a view from the Bunker. Tonight, Iron Myth 49 demons in Hollywood, which could describe a lot of the industry, actually. That will be released at 7pm tonight, Central Time.
Sharon Gilbert
I'm looking really quickly at IMDb to see where you can.
Derek Gilbert
Oh, it's on Amazon Prime.
Sharon Gilbert
Yes, it is on Amazon Prime. It's also on Plex. See where else Pluto tv. It looks like.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, Tubi Pluto tv. You'd have commercials in it. But that's. If you've got Pluto, it's free.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah. You can rent it on Amazon Prime. For 3.99. I think starting at 3.99, you can really buy it.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, you can buy it because we've got Amazon prime and I was able to watch it for free.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
With our prime subscription.
Sharon Gilbert
Right. My point is that some of these movies go off the free and they go on to where you have to rent or buy it.
Derek Gilbert
Right, right.
Sharon Gilbert
So if you see it's free, watch it now.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah, I would. I would encourage it because again, it's really insightful. And again, I will say the depiction of the demonized character is more accurate than anything I've seen in any other demon movie. So. Yeah, that is tonight. And coming up this week, we've got another Throwback Thursday episode on PID Radio, part two of our first interview with Dr. Michael Heiser.
Sharon Gilbert
Oh, yeah.
Derek Gilbert
On the Divine Council. Haven't come up with a way back Wednesday from View from the Bunker yet, but I will have one of those out on Wednesday as well. Plus more excerpts from our book.
Sharon Gilbert
Maybe Old Sci Fridays.
Derek Gilbert
Oh, we could do that. Yeah.
Sharon Gilbert
We've got a of lot, lot of Sci Fridays.
Derek Gilbert
Yeah. So anyway, bottom line is, if you subscribe to the Gilbert House substack, gilberthouse.substack.com you'll get all of that. Or just get our app.
Sharon Gilbert
Yeah.
Derek Gilbert
And then you'll get all of that there.
Sharon Gilbert
You will be so sick of us.
Derek Gilbert
Exactly.
Sharon Gilbert
You may be sick of us now, so we probably should sign off.
Derek Gilbert
Absolutely. Until next time. I'm Derek Gilbert.
Sharon Gilbert
I'm Sharon Gilbert. We love you and Jesus loves you.
Derek Gilbert
Amen.
Sharon Gilbert
Bye. Bye, everybody.

Date: April 19, 2026
Hosts: Derek & Sharon Gilbert
Podcast: Gilbert House Fellowship (Gilbert House Ministries)
This episode continues Derek and Sharon Gilbert’s verse-by-verse, chronological Bible study, focusing on Amos chapters 8 and 9, with nuanced comparisons between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint. Major themes include God’s judgment upon Israel, prophetic wordplay, spiritual restoration, and the place of Israel in God's plan. The Gilberts connect these prophetic texts to both ancient and modern Israel, discuss the dangers of antisemitism in the Church, and highlight the importance of understanding prophecy accurately. Throughout, they mix scriptural exegesis with personal anecdotes, historical context, and an emphasis on Christ-centered hope amid troubled times.
“We feel that sense of responsibility because it is through your gifts and the Lord’s leading. We are not free to just... spend on whatever.” – Derek Gilbert [06:28]
“The way that those who have a lot treat those who have nothing is the same now as it used to be.” – Sharon Gilbert [20:19]
“The Masoretic text changed it to Edom... There is no prophecy that Edom would overwhelm and become Israel.” – Derek Gilbert [54:35]
“No matter where you go, I will find you. And might I suggest this is a judgment not only on humans… The spirits behind the image.” — Sharon Gilbert [46:27]
“Do not let our weird rabbit trails... make you think you have to understand all of this to be saved. No, it’s very simple. Jesus died for your sins in accordance with the scriptures...” – Derek [72:40]

The episode is a rich blend of biblical exegesis, personal ministry, encouragement to love Israel and each other, and practical faith. The Gilberts demystify prophecies about Israel, call out antisemitism in the Church, and reinforce that all, Jew and Gentile alike, are saved solely by faith in Christ—not by works or ancestry. Their joy, humor, and hope model the program’s tagline: Living for Christ in the midst of doom and gloom news.
