Narrator
Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's just one way to handle the killers of the spoilers, and that's with a U.S. marshal and the smell of gun smoke. Gun smoke. Starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that moved west with young America. And the story of a man who moved with it.
Matt Dillon
I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal, the first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It's a chancy job and it makes a man watchful and a little lonely.

Kitty
Hello, Laurie.
Laurie
Oh, hello, Kitty.
Kitty
I thought you weren't coming to work till this evening.
Laurie
It's hotter at the boarding house than it is here in the saloon.
Kitty
He got your hair fixed different?
Laurie
Yeah. How you like it done up like this?
Kitty
Nice. Real nice.
Laurie
Maybe I'll have it this way then. See what some of the men think of it.
Kitty
Honey, it isn't the way you fix your hair that attracts men.
Laurie
Oh, I know that. Just thought some of them might notice, that's all.
Kitty
They will. One in particular.
Laurie
You mean Roque?
Kitty
Uh huh. How is he, by the way? I haven't seen him in here the last few days.
Laurie
He's been doing some ranch work for old man Johnson.
Kitty
Sounds like he's settling down. You better watch out, Laurie. He's liable to ask you to marry him.
Laurie
No, not Roque. He likes me, but he won't ask me to marry him. Well, you can never tell I'm a saloon girl. Kitty, men don't ask saloon girls to marry him.
Kitty
It's happened.
Laurie
Not to me, it hasn't.
Kitty
Well, look at that. Looks like you got company.
Roque Judson
Howdy, Miss Kitty. Laurie.
Laurie
Hello. Hello.
Kitty
Well, I got some work to do. I'll see you later.
Laurie
All right. Bye, Kitty.
Roque Judson
Excuse me. You mind if I sit down?
Laurie
Well, you just help yourself. There, you finished your job.
Narrator
Oh, yeah.
Roque Judson
He just wanted some fence picks. It didn't amount to much.
Laurie
You make enough money to buy me some beer?
Roque Judson
Sure. Sam, bring us a couple of beers, will you? Right away. Hey, you know, I kind of missed you the past few days, Laurie.
Laurie
Why, you sound surprised.
Roque Judson
Well, there ain't many women I ever missed.
Laurie
Now, what makes me so special?
Roque Judson
I don't know. Just when I was out there fixing fence, I just got thinking about you. But. Oh, how you move and walk and all.
Laurie
Well, most people move and walk.
Roque Judson
Oh, yeah, but it's different with you. You know what I mean? Thank you, Sam.
Laurie
Now, come on, rogue, tell me what you mean. What makes me so different from other people?
Roque Judson
You know what I mean, Laurie, Thinking about you just made me want to.
Chug Wilson
Come to town, that's all.
Laurie
Well, I sure didn't know you liked me because of the way I was.
Roque Judson
Oh, it ain't only that, you know it.
Laurie
Well, that's what you said.
Roque Judson
No, no, no. I done no such of a thing. You're just putting words in my M.O.
Laurie
Now, maybe I should get up and walk for you.
Roque Judson
Oh, come on, Laura. You just cut out teasing me.
Laurie
I think you're getting mad.
Matt Dillon
No, no, no, I ain't getting.
Laurie
Of course, I. I could go tease some other man. Maybe they wouldn't get so riled. Why like that when they just came in.
Chug Wilson
You mean whiskey bark either? Yes, sir.
Roque Judson
I bet he ain't took a bath in six months.
Laurie
Yeah, or seen a woman.
Roque Judson
Oh, likely not. He's a buffalo hunter, I guess.
Laurie
You know, maybe after all that time, he needs to see something besides buffalo and sagebrush. I think I'll go over.
Roque Judson
Laurie. No, no, Laurie, leave him be.
Laurie
Ah, it'd be fun.
Roque Judson
No, you be careful, Laurie. You never tell about a fellow like that.
Laurie
You're a jealous rogue.
Roque Judson
No, I ain't. No, just I. I don't like to see you get all tangled up with something you can't handle. Because like you said, he probably ain't seen A woman.
Laurie
I think you really are jealous.
Roque Judson
Well, no. All right, you go. Go on ahead. See if I care.
Laurie
All right. I'll be back in a few.
Roque Judson
Yeah, sure.
Chug Wilson
You talking to me?
Laurie
Well, now, a gentleman usually takes his hat off when he's talking to a lady.
Chug Wilson
Why, yes, ma'am. I reckon I plumb forgot my manners.
Laurie
What's your name?
Chug Wilson
Wilson, ma'am. Chug Wilson.
Laurie
Oh, that's a handsome name. You a buffalo hunter?
Chug Wilson
Yes, ma'am.
Laurie
Well, I bet you're just about the best buffalo hunter there is, too.
Chug Wilson
I got my share of hides right enough.
Laurie
Why don't you. Why don't you buy me a drink, Chug?
Chug Wilson
Yes, ma'am. Barkeep.
Matt Dillon
Yes, sir.
Chug Wilson
Give me another glass.
Laurie
My name is Lori.
Chug Wilson
Lori.
Roque Judson
Here you are, Eric.
Chug Wilson
Boy, that's a pretty name.
Laurie
How long you been in Dodge, Chug?
Chug Wilson
I just rode in. Here you are, ma'am.
Laurie
Thanks. Well, I'm sure glad you did ride in.
Chug Wilson
You are?
Laurie
Of course I am.
Chug Wilson
When I get to town, there ain't usually many women that'll bother talking to me.
Laurie
Well, you've got one talking to you now.
Chug Wilson
Yes, ma'am, and it's downright pleasurable.
Laurie
You gonna stay and dodge a while?
Chug Wilson
I was only aiming to be here long enough to sell my hides, Miss Laurie. But I just might stay a piece.
Laurie
Well, that'd be real nice, Chug. You can buy me another drink sometime.
Chug Wilson
I could buy you one tonight. I could buy you a whole table full of drinks tonight after I sell my hides. You'll be here, won't you? I mean. I mean, you. You ain't going nowheres?
Laurie
No, I'll be here.
Chug Wilson
Well, that's fine, Ms. Laurie.
Matt Dillon
That's just fine.
Chug Wilson
I'll get my business took care of, but I'll be back later on.
Laurie
Sure.
Chug Wilson
Bye, Ms. Laurie.
Laurie
Bye. What did I tell you? He really hasn't seen a woman in months. Maybe not talked to one in years.
Roque Judson
Yeah, he sure was stumbling over himself.
Laurie
I thought I'd bust out laughing. Yeah, well, didn't you think it was funny, Rory?
Chug Wilson
He.
Roque Judson
He might have took you more serious than you figure.
Laurie
Ah, I'll let him buy me a drink sometime. He'll forget all about it.
Chug Wilson
Yeah.
Roque Judson
I just hope you ain't piling up trouble for yourself.
Laurie
Oh, Rog, I'm just having fun, that's all. Just having.

Kitty
It's getting kind of late, Lori. I'm about ready to close up.
Laurie
I'll close up for you, Kitty. I promised Roche I'd wait for him.
Kitty
Oh, all right.
Laurie
Why don't you sit down for a minute here?
Kitty
I think I will.
Laurie
I'm tired. I sure were a lot of people in here tonight.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Kitty
I swear I don't know where they all come from.
Laurie
Well, Dodge is growing.
Kitty
Sometimes I wish it had stopped. Ah. Hello, Matt.
Chug Wilson
Hello, Kitty. Laurie.
Laurie
How are you, Marshall?
Matt Dillon
I'm fine, thanks.
Kitty
Sam's gone, but I'll get you a beer if you want me.
Matt Dillon
Oh, no, thanks, Kitty. I was just on my way by. If I'd walk you home.
Kitty
I'd like him better if you'd carry me. My feet hurt.
Matt Dillon
Maybe next time.
Kitty
You don't mind closing up, Laurie?
Laurie
Of course not. I told Sam I'd put the glasses away anyhow.
Kitty
Good night, then.
Laurie
Night. Good night, Marshall.
Chug Wilson
Night, Laurie.
Laurie
Hello. Oh. Oh, I thought you were Rock.
Chug Wilson
Sorry it took me so long getting back here, Ms. Laurie. It's mighty nice to see you're waiting for me, though.
Laurie
I'm waiting for somebody else.
Chug Wilson
You promised you'd have a drink with me.
Laurie
Some other time. I'm tired now.
Chug Wilson
You promised.
Laurie
That was this afternoon. Now I'm tired and I just want to be left alone. So leave me alone, huh?
Chug Wilson
Well, I don't hardly seem right.
Laurie
Well, that's the way it is.
Chug Wilson
I don't think it that way, Miss Laurie. You and me, we're gonna have a drink now.
Laurie
Now, listen. I don't want a drink. And I sure don't want one with you.
Chug Wilson
You was powerful nice to me this afternoon. How come you ain't that way now?
Laurie
I was having fun this afternoon. Now I'm not. So get out of here.
Chug Wilson
Miss Laurie, I never had a woman talk to me the way you done.
Laurie
I told you to get out of here.
Chug Wilson
I made up my mind about you.
Laurie
What do you mean by that?
Chug Wilson
But I reckon you and me, we're gonna get along just fine.
Laurie
You and me? You get out of here. I'll break a bottle over your head. Do you hear what I said?
Roque Judson
What's wrong, Laurie? You got some trouble?
Chug Wilson
Everything's fine, mister.
Roque Judson
Ain't you? Our buffalo hunter was in here this afternoon.
Chug Wilson
That's right. In Ms. Laurie. She said she'd have a drink with you.
Roque Judson
Now, look, she just funnin you today. That didn't mean nothing.
Chug Wilson
It did to me.
Roque Judson
Come on, Laurie. I'll take you home.
Chug Wilson
You ain't had your drink yet, Ms. Laurie.
Laurie
No, and I'm not going to. Let's go, Oak.
Chug Wilson
Yeah, just hold it right where you're at. Here's your drink, Ms. Laurie.
Roque Judson
Well, now, look, Judge.
Chug Wilson
Shut Mr. Ro. Take your drink, Ms. Laurie.
Roque Judson
Well, I told you she don't want it.
Chug Wilson
You knocked that glass out of my hand.
Roque Judson
Yeah, and I'm gonna do a lot.
Narrator
More if you don't leave her alone.
Chug Wilson
Squash you. Squash you.
Laurie
Please. Look, Joe, I'll have a drink with you. I promise. I'll have a drink.
Chug Wilson
All right, Miss Lord.
Laurie
You all right, Luke? You hurt bad?
Chug Wilson
You stay away from her, you hear, Mr. Rope? From now on, you stay away. You don't own her.
Roque Judson
And you better know.
Chug Wilson
I'll tell you something, Ms. Laurie. She belongs to me. I've been thinking on it real hard and I made up my mind.
Kitty
Oh, for heaven's sakes.
Chester
I declare. Delmonico's cooking is just getting better all the time. That was a good steak.
Matt Dillon
Better?
Chester
It tasted like shoe leather. What? You heard me.
Kitty
Shoe leather.
Chester
Mr. Dunlon, was that a good steak or not?
Matt Dillon
Well, I don't know, Chester. I didn't have one.
Chester
Did you think it was so bad?
Kitty
Doc?
Chester
Why in tarnation did you eat here?
Matt Dillon
Where else am I gonna eat?
Roque Judson
Well, do your own.
Chester
Oh, yes, I'd do that, Jesse. I'd sure do that. Only I'm not blessed with as much leisure time as some people I know. Leisure time? Why, you ain't done a lick of work all morning. You just been sitting over there in front of the Dodge house, watching.
Matt Dillon
Why don't you show.
Roque Judson
Marshall? I seen you in here. I got talked to you.
Matt Dillon
Now what's the trouble?
Roque Judson
Well, it's Chug Wilson.
Matt Dillon
Who's Chug Wilson?
Roque Judson
He's a buffalo hunter coming to Dodge yesterday. Last night, he most took me to death.
Matt Dillon
You look all right to me.
Roque Judson
Well, that's just cause Laurie begged him out of it.
Matt Dillon
Laurie?
Roque Judson
Yeah. Now he thinks he owns her. Just cause she. Well, she shined up to him. But that ain't the half of it.
Matt Dillon
Oh, what else?
Roque Judson
Well, this afternoon, just a little while back, I went looking for Laurie. And I couldn't find her. So I went to her boarding house. I knocked on the door. Now, who should open it. But that Chuck Wilson.
Matt Dillon
Well, maybe Laurie invited him.
Roque Judson
No, she didn't. She wouldn't do that. And besides, I seen her sitting right there in a chair and she was all. All scared to look.
Matt Dillon
Was she hurt?
Roque Judson
Well, I don't know. Cause before I could do anything, when he picked me up, he threw me clean down the stairs. Like they broke every bone in my body. Marshall. I want you to do something, Marshall. Throw him in jail.
Matt Dillon
I'm not gonna throw a man in jail unless he breaks the law or hurt somebody. Roque, you don't look hurt to me.
Roque Judson
You're not going to do nothing.
Matt Dillon
I'll find Chug Wilson and hear his side of it.
Roque Judson
Well, if you ain't some Marshall, I.
Matt Dillon
Haven'T got time to nurse. Mate, every drifter that comes to Dodge and looks cow eyed at one of the saloons.
Narrator
All right.
Roque Judson
And you just better start building a pine box big enough to hold Chug Wilson, Marshall. Cuz I'm going to get him. I'm going to fix him good.
Chester
Mr. Dylan. He's mad enough to shoot somebody.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. Come on sister. We better find out what this is all about.
Chug Wilson
Yes, sir.
Matt Dillon
See you later, Doc.
Chester
Yes, all right. Long Doc. Maybe Chuck Wilson's still at the boarding house, Mr. Dillon.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, maybe.
Roque Judson
Marshall.
Laurie
Marshall.
Roque Judson
Please.
Laurie
Marshall, you gotta help me.
Matt Dillon
Oh, what is it, Lori? What's the matter?
Laurie
That buffalo hunter, Chug Wilson, he just walked into my room, grabbed me and told me I had to go with him. Then Roque come to the door and Chug threw him down the stairs.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, Roque told me.
Laurie
I was scared. I ran out when he was fighting with Roque. I went to your office but you weren't there. So I hid in the alley.
Matt Dillon
What started all this, Laurie?
Laurie
Oh, a joke, Marshall. Just a crazy joke.
Matt Dillon
What kind of a joke?
Laurie
Oh, yesterday, when. When Chug come to town. Roque and I were talking and I. I thought it'd be funny if I kind of made up to Chug. You know, it teased him a little.
Matt Dillon
Oh, that kind of a joke isn't very funny, Laurie.
Laurie
Well, how was I to know he was gonna take it serious?
Matt Dillon
Fool with a man's feelings. You're gonna get in trouble.
Laurie
Marshall, please, you gotta keep him away from me. He's gonna do something crazy. I just know it. Lori, there he is. He's come for me.
Matt Dillon
You just take it easy. If you don't want to go with him, you don't have to.
Chug Wilson
How come you run out on me, Laurie? You shouldn't. Who are you?
Matt Dillon
I'M the marshal here, Chuck.
Chug Wilson
You trying to get Laurie away from you?
Matt Dillon
Marshall, I'm not trying to do anything. But Laurie doesn't want you.
Chug Wilson
That ain't so.
Matt Dillon
Why don't you ask her?
Chug Wilson
There's no need. Yesterday in the saloon, she told me she was mighty glad I come to town. Right then she told me I was.
Laurie
Only having some fun.
Chug Wilson
Yesterday it said, rope Judson, he's trying to turn you agin me.
Matt Dillon
Chug, you just can't grab a woman and run off with her because she told you she's glad you came to town.
Chug Wilson
Why not?
Matt Dillon
Because I'm telling you right now. Now, you stay away from Lori. Don't you go nearer anymore.
Chug Wilson
Lori's mine, Marshall. She's been mine since I first seen her yesterday. And ain't nobody going to take her away from me. Not you, not nobody.

Matt Dillon
Morning, chester.
Chester
Oh, morning, Ms. John. You want some coffee?
Matt Dillon
Yeah. Maybe it'll wake me up.
Chester
You know, I've been worrying about Chuck Wilson and Glory all night long. You suppose he'll leave her alone like you told him to?
Matt Dillon
Oh, I don't know, Chester.
Chester
Makes you feel kind of sorry for him, don't it? I mean, the way she was teasing him and all.
Matt Dillon
She's paying for it now.
Chester
Well, yes, sir, but so is Chug.
Matt Dillon
Well, he'll get over it.
Chester
I don't know.
Matt Dillon
Chester. What did you make this coffee with? Axle grease.
Chug Wilson
Why?
Chester
It's the same as I always make it, only this time I put in a little more chickering.
Matt Dillon
Well, next time, try washing out the pot. Huh?
Chester
Washing out the pot. Well, now, if you ain't careful, you can wash the flavor clean out of a pot by doing that. Well, hello, Ma.
Roque Judson
That's the wizard.
Matt Dillon
Oh, Marshall. What's the matter, Moss? Well, maybe it ain't nothing, but it just seemed kind of funny, that's all. Oh, what's wrong?
Roque Judson
About an hour ago, this big buffalo.
Matt Dillon
Hunter come into my stable. Chug something or other. I never did hear his last name. He wanted a horse and rig So I rented him one. And then him and this girl live out.
Chug Wilson
Girl?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, you know, that saloon girl, Lori. And I got to thinking afterwards. That Lori, she looked awful scared.
Chester
Mr. Dillon, he's done it. He's kidnapped her.
Matt Dillon
Come on, Chester.
Chester
At least the buggy trail is easy to Farmer John.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. Doesn't look like they're moving very fast.
Chester
I wonder how come Chuck could do.
Laurie
A thing like that.
Matt Dillon
Ellie's a stubborn man, Chester.
Chester
But it sure does seem crazy.
Matt Dillon
I guess when Chuck makes up his mind, nothing's going to change.
Chester
Mr. Don, look. There's somebody hanging from that tree. On it now.
Matt Dillon
Let's go. Give me a hand, chester. Yes, sir.
Chester
Mr. Dunn.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. Rogue Judson. Easy now.
Chester
His neck's broke.
Matt Dillon
And that didn't happen long ago.
Chester
No, sir, Mr. Dun. You supposed to Chug Wilson done this?
Matt Dillon
It looks that way. Pull up, Chester.
Chester
That's it, ain't it? That's Moss Grimm's buggy down there by the creek. I don't see Lori no worse, though.
Matt Dillon
No, but there's Chug walking around.
Chester
Yes, sir.
Matt Dillon
Come.
Chug Wilson
Chug. Hello, Marshall. I was just looking at our ranch.
Matt Dillon
You were what?
Chug Wilson
Our ranch. I bought this piece of land this morning for Lori and me. Sure is pretty bottomland, ain't it?
Matt Dillon
Where is she, Chuck?
Chug Wilson
Huh?
Matt Dillon
Laurie, where is she?
Chug Wilson
Over there in the buggy.
Matt Dillon
Shasta, go and see.
Chester
All right, Chuck.
Chug Wilson
I was gonna shore the land. Now there ain't no use, Mr. Dillon.
Chester
She's dead, Mr. Dillon. She's been shot.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chug Wilson
Lori and me, we were gonna go to Hays City and get married. She pretended she didn't want to at all, but I know different, Chug. I was gonna shore the land first off. So she'd know she had something good to come.
Matt Dillon
Chuck, what happened?
Chug Wilson
Broke Judson. He was waiting for Lori and me out on the road.
Matt Dillon
Waiting for you?
Chug Wilson
He shot at me, but he hit Laurie. So I took his gun away and hung him from a tree.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, we found him.
Chug Wilson
Why'd he do that? Why'd he shoot at us? I never done him no harm.
Matt Dillon
You threw him down some stairs. You took his woman.
Chug Wilson
She was my woman.
Matt Dillon
Roque doesn't think so.
Chug Wilson
We just didn't know, that's all.
Matt Dillon
Now I guess he didn't.
Chug Wilson
You gonna put me in jail, Marshall?
Matt Dillon
I have to, Chuck.
Chug Wilson
Would you do me one thing first? What's that? I brung Laurie out here so she could be on our ranch. Will you let me bury her here? All right, Chuck.
Matt Dillon
I'll let you bury her.
Chug Wilson
I think she'd like that. It's kind of peaceful and all. Yeah, I ain't much on words, you know. Some you can say Far Marshall don't need to be much.
Matt Dillon
Sometimes a little can be too much.
Chug Wilson
What do you mean by that?
Matt Dillon
Something I guess you don't understand. Chug. Laurie didn't understand it either.
