Narrator
Around Dodge City and in the territory on West. There's just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers, and that's with a U.S. marshal and the Smell of Gun Smoke Gun Smoke Starring William Conrad the transcribed story of the violence that moved west with young America and the story of a man who moved with it.
Matt Dillon
I'm that man, Matt Dillon, United States Marshal, the first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It's a chancy job and it makes a man watchful and a little lone.
Ben Tipple
Hey Temple, mow that horse. You're an oar. Says I can get mine in there. This hitch rag's pretty crowded, Paris.
Chester
Can't you tie up someplace else?
Ben Tipple
I said move him over here. Now don't do that. No. If you hit my horse again, I'll shoot you. Paris, you won't do nothing. What's the matter with you, you drunk? You got a complaint about something, Tip? Yeah, Paris, I got a complaint. Go ahead, Tipple. I'm waiting.
Matt Dillon
All right, hold it there, you men.
Ben Tipple
You stay out of this, Marshal.
Matt Dillon
Not likely.
Ben Tipple
Now look here, Marshal. I know you're a friend of Tipple's, but I don't know as I like your protecting him this hard.
Matt Dillon
I'm not protecting anybody, Paris. I'm stopping a gunfight. Now you get moving.
Ben Tipple
I'll meet you anytime, Paris.
Matt Dillon
You shut up.
Ben Tipple
We'll meet right enough when you ain't got your nursemaid around.
Matt Dillon
Why'd you stop it, Matt?
Ben Tipple
He had it coming to him.
Matt Dillon
You're pretty hot tempered, aren't you, Ben?
Ben Tipple
Did you see what he done?
Matt Dillon
That's no reason to shoot a man and you know it.
Ben Tipple
An ordinary man?
Matt Dillon
No.
Ben Tipple
But that Paris has been looking for trouble for a long time.
Matt Dillon
I know what he's like. But you keep away from him, Ben.
Ben Tipple
It's bound to happen, Matt, sooner or later. And I don't hide from no man. You know me well enough for that.
Chester
This doggone old river is awful high for this time of year, ain't it, Mr. Dunn?
Matt Dillon
I must have been having some big rains up in Colorado.
Chester
Oh, now, that's where I'd like to be. Up in them tall, cool mountains.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chester
My, just think of laying on your back up there in the deep grass, drinking snow water and eating trout, listening to all them pretty birds singing away.
Matt Dillon
We'll miss you, Chester.
Chester
Oh, I ain't going nowhere.
Matt Dillon
Look on the bank there.
Chester
Some fellow fishing. You must have fell asleep.
Matt Dillon
He isn't asleep, Chester.
Chester
No, sir, I don't believe he is.
Ben Tipple
What?
Chester
That's Frank Parrish, Mr. Dillon.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, shot in the back.
Chester
That's terrible. There's his pole. By golly. He was sitting here fishing and somebody sneaked up and shot him. Oh, that's a mean way to die.
Matt Dillon
We'll get a wagon and carry him back to Dodge. All right, get on, Justin.
Chester
I can't see nobody.
Matt Dillon
All right, come out of there. You can't get both of us. Yamada will start shooting.
Andy Spangler
Don't shoot, Marshall. I'm coming.
Chester
Why, it's only a kid. It's Andy Spangler.
Matt Dillon
Andy, what are you doing out here?
Andy Spangler
Nothing, Marshall. I was gonna go fishing, but I lost my line.
Matt Dillon
Why were you hiding in the brush, sir?
Andy Spangler
Him? I heard a shot some time ago and I come looking around. I found him laying there and I got scared when I heard you ride up. So I hid.
Matt Dillon
You didn't see anybody?
Andy Spangler
No, I didn't see nothing. Whoever did it was gone.
Chester
Oh, my goodness. Mr. Jones.
Matt Dillon
What is it, Chester?
Chester
The way Frank and Ben Tipple was carrying on, you don't suppose Ben could have did it, do you? I know he's a good friend of yours and all.
Matt Dillon
Never mind, Chester. Well, let's get back to town. Come on, Andy, you can ride behind me.

Matt Dillon
Hello, Ben.
Ben Tipple
I'm Matt.
Matt Dillon
Come.
Ben Tipple
I was about to take a little nap now it's cooled off some.
Matt Dillon
Ben, you heard what happened to Frank Paris yesterday. Yeah. Yeah, I heard.
Ben Tipple
Well, are you asking me if I did it, Matt?
Matt Dillon
Most everybody in Dodge thinks you did.
Ben Tipple
And what do you think?
Matt Dillon
Well, I've been telling everybody I've known Ben Temple a long time and that he's hot tempered and that Frank Paris has been prodding him every chance he had. But that Paris didn't even have his gun out. Besides, he was shot in the back. What are people saying to that? They're saying you're a friend of mine. They think that's why I haven't arrested you. Is it? I'd go after my own brother if I thought he murdered a man, Ben.
Ben Tipple
Happened yesterday morning sometime, didn't it, Matt?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, that's right.
Ben Tipple
I got no alibi for then. I wasn't with nobody.
Matt Dillon
That's too bad. It would have helped.
Ben Tipple
I might have shot Frank Parry someday, Matt, but never in the back.
Matt Dillon
I know that, Ben. But until I find out who did it, you better lay.
Miss Kitty
Just look at this place, Matt.
Matt Dillon
What's wrong, Kitty?
Miss Kitty
Well, it may be the biggest saloon in Dodge, but it's sure the emptiest.
Matt Dillon
You're getting greedy, Kitty.
Miss Kitty
And it's about time. I'm sure not getting younger.
Matt Dillon
You're gonna be able to retire before you're 30.
Miss Kitty
Why not?
Matt Dillon
Well, I'm glad somebody's getting rich around here. Law sure isn't.
Miss Kitty
No, but the law keeps busy.
Matt Dillon
What?
Miss Kitty
Joe Spangler and his pa. I think he's looking for you, Matt.
Matt Dillon
Oh.
Ben Tipple
Evening, Miss Kitty.
Miss Kitty
Evening.
Ben Tipple
I want to talk to you, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
Go ahead, Spangler.
Ben Tipple
I want to know why you ain't got Ben Tipple in jail.
Matt Dillon
Frank Paris was a friend of yours, wasn't he?
Ben Tipple
That doesn't matter.
Matt Dillon
And it doesn't matter that Ben Tipple's a friend of mine. He didn't do it, Spangler.
Ben Tipple
There's a lot of people who think he did. Marshal.
Matt Dillon
You have any proof?
Ben Tipple
I'm a boy, Andy. I think he saw Tipple out there. And I'll get it out of him. I whipped him once already.
Matt Dillon
Look, Spangler, your boy had told me if he'd seen anybody. Why would he try to protect Ben Tipple?
Ben Tipple
Scared?
Matt Dillon
Scared of what?
Ben Tipple
You. What you might do to him if he talked.
Matt Dillon
Just a minute, Spangler.
Ben Tipple
He's gonna talk before I'm through.
Matt Dillon
You get out of here. You're making me mad.
Ben Tipple
No, I didn't aim to do that, Marshall. All I wanted is to get you to do your job before somebody has to do it for you.
Miss Kitty
Easy, Matt.
Ben Tipple
Yeah.
Matt Dillon
Oughta take him apart.
Miss Kitty
That wouldn't help.
Matt Dillon
It'd make me feel better.
Miss Kitty
You'll be all right soon. You find out who did kill Paris.
Matt Dillon
How am I gonna find that out, Kitty? With all this going on, he's as safe as a bear in a hickory tree.
Ben Tipple
Well, looks to me like you're gonna.
Miss Kitty
Have a busy day today, man.
Matt Dillon
I am. Why, Doug?
Miss Kitty
Well, I don't know now. Maybe it's cause you did so little yesterday.
Matt Dillon
Do I owe you some money or something?
Ben Tipple
Oh, no, no, no.
Chester
You're all paid up. But you know, man, I've been thinking.
Matt Dillon
How much you want, Doc?
Ben Tipple
Oh, $10 to do it.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chesterfield Announcer
Here you are.
Matt Dillon
Oh, thank you. Sure, Doc. Just pay it back by Friday. That's.
Ben Tipple
Oh, no, wait a minute.
Matt Dillon
You think I was merely asking for a loan? You have your own way of doing things, Doc.
Ben Tipple
So's he.
Matt Dillon
What?
Ben Tipple
Look.
Matt Dillon
That filthy Spangler, he's cuffing his boy around again. I've had about enough of his ways.
Ben Tipple
I warned you, boy. I warned you. What?
Andy Spangler
You did No, I didn't mean to do it.
Ben Tipple
You won't learn, will you?
Matt Dillon
All right, that's enough, Spangler.
Ben Tipple
Bye. You just get out of here, Marshal. You ain't interfering in this.
Matt Dillon
Let the boy go, Spangler.
Ben Tipple
Let him go.
Matt Dillon
I said that's enough. Andy. You stand over here. He won't hit you again.
Andy Spangler
I didn't mean to do it. I told him I didn't.
Matt Dillon
What did you do, Andy?
Andy Spangler
I lost his rifle. I borrowed it to go hunting and I fell across the river and I lost it.
Ben Tipple
I ought to kill you, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
Don't try it, Spankler. Now, come on, get on your feet.
Ben Tipple
What right you got coming between the man and his boy?
Matt Dillon
None, I guess. But I took it anyway.
Ben Tipple
That kid ought to be in jail, stealing like he does.
Matt Dillon
He wasn't stealing.
Ben Tipple
It ain't none of your business, Marshall. I ain't gonna talk to you about it, Andy. I'll see to you later.
Matt Dillon
You beat him again and I'll throw you in jail.
Andy Spangler
He won't beat me. Cause I ain't going home. Not ever.
Matt Dillon
What'll your mother think?
Andy Spangler
Auntie, I got no mother.
Matt Dillon
Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot, honey.
Andy Spangler
And he hates me.
Matt Dillon
Look, Andy, if things get bad, you come see me, huh? Anytime. Will you do that?
Andy Spangler
Maybe.
Matt Dillon
Now, don't let your PA make you say anything that isn't true, Andy. You don't have to. You understand? Now, all right, now you just remember, you.
Andy Spangler
You can come see me anytime.

This a pretty night, Mr. Dylan. Look at all them stars up there. Just a shining away.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, and look at all those lights in the saloons, just shining away.
Chester
You ain't much of a nature lover, are you?
Matt Dillon
Not while I got work to do, Chester.
Ben Tipple
What work?
Matt Dillon
Well, for the next few hours, I gotta walk around and try to make sure nobody's gonna get cheated or get too drunk or get killed.
Chester
Maybe you're right. Sometimes that can turn into work. Well, looky there. It's Andy. Now, what's he up to?
Andy Spangler
Marshall? Dylan.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. What's the trouble, Andy?
Andy Spangler
They're in that alley right back there. Come on, Murray. Come on.
Matt Dillon
Well, who's in the alley?
Andy Spangler
Pa and Ben Tippett. Pa's got him cornered.
Matt Dillon
What?
Andy Spangler
Pa's got the drop on him. He hid out in mirror, waited for him to come by.
Matt Dillon
But how do you know? What were you doing there?
Andy Spangler
I thought Pa was after me. But he's gonna shoot Ben Tipple. I know he is.
Matt Dillon
Well, maybe I can stop him anyway.
Andy Spangler
I hope so, but I don't know how.
Matt Dillon
All right, let's slow down here. You wait here with Chester, Annie. I'm gonna go in there alone.
Ben Tipple
You see, you are being used. Well, admit it and you know it. I wouldn't have minded shooting Frank Parrish, but not in the back. Not even him. I guess I'm gonna have to kill.
Matt Dillon
You'll die yourself if you pull that trigger, Snagler. Marshall. Now, you drop that gun.
Ben Tipple
No. He killed Frank Paris. And I'm gonna shoot him if I die for it myself.
Matt Dillon
Don't be a fool.
Ben Tipple
He's got my gun. Matt.
Matt Dillon
Just stand steady.
Andy Spangler
Ben Marshall.
Matt Dillon
Get back.
Andy Spangler
Andy, I gotta tell you something.
Chester
He slipped away from me.
Andy Spangler
Mr. Dillon, it's terribly important.
Matt Dillon
Help me keep an eye on Spangler, Chester.
Chester
Yes, sir.
Matt Dillon
All right, now, what is it, Andy? Hurry up.
Andy Spangler
Bend over. I got a whisper.
Ben Tipple
What's going on there?
Chester
Never mind. You got two men who will shoot you now, Spangler. And you better not try nothing.
Ben Tipple
Tired of this. What's that kid doing here, anyway?
Chester
Well, he didn't come here to murder nobody like his PA did.
Ben Tipple
Ben Tipple's the murderer, not me.
Matt Dillon
No, he isn't. Spangler Temple didn't shoot Frank Paris.
Ben Tipple
You said that before, Marshall, and he did it.
Matt Dillon
Andy. He just told me.
Ben Tipple
What are you saying?
Matt Dillon
It was an accident. He saw something move and he thought it was an animal, so he fired at it. I don't believe the day he took your rifle. When he found he'd shot Paris, he got scared and threw the rifle into the river. You tell him, Andy.
Andy Spangler
It's true. I was too scared to kill anybody before.
Matt Dillon
All right, you heard him, Spankman. Now, put up that gun.
Ben Tipple
I don't believe him. He's lying. You stay where you are.
Matt Dillon
Put up your gun, I said.
Ben Tipple
Not hardly. You killed him, Matt.
Matt Dillon
He almost killed me, Ben. Andy. I. I'm sorry about your pa, but you go with Chester now, huh?
Andy Spangler
He wasn't my pa. What? My real PA died a long time ago. My ma told me about it when she made me change my name.
Matt Dillon
Oh.
Andy Spangler
I guess that's why he never did like me much. Beat me all the time.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Andy Spangler
Marshall.
Matt Dillon
What, Andy?
Andy Spangler
When are you gonna hang me?
Matt Dillon
Hang you?
Andy Spangler
For shooting Mr. Paris?
Matt Dillon
Is that what you've been thinking?
Andy Spangler
I admitted doing it, didn't I?
Matt Dillon
It was an accident. Andy. Nobody's gonna hang you. Ben. What?
Ben Tipple
Matt.
Matt Dillon
He's a mighty brave boy. Yeah.
Ben Tipple
Yeah, he sure is. Why, he spoke up just now to save my life, thinking he'd be hung for it.
Matt Dillon
Didn't he?
Ben Tipple
Andy, how'd you like to come home with me?
Matt Dillon
I got a place for a boy like you.
Andy Spangler
You mean that?
Matt Dillon
I sure do.
Andy Spangler
Marcia. You believe me? You think he means it?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, Andy. I think he means it.

This episode of Gunsmoke, titled "Lost Rifle," delivers a taut tale of suspicion, justice, and redemption set in the ever-dangerous streets and prairies of Dodge City. Marshal Matt Dillon finds himself in the center of a murder investigation when Frank Paris is killed while fishing, with initial suspicions falling on Ben Tipple—a known hot-head and old friend of Dillon. As the mystery unravels, the episode explores small-town tensions, guilt, and the hope of second chances.
Tone: Taut, suspenseful, emotional.
Setting: Dodge City, Kansas; riverside; alleys and saloons.
Ben’s aversion to cowardice:
“I don't hide from no man. You know me well enough for that.” — Ben Tipple ([05:28])
Chester’s wistful longing:
“Just think of laying on your back up there in the deep grass, drinking snow water and eating trout, listening to all them pretty birds singing away.” — Chester ([06:05])
Matt on the burden of law:
“Law sure isn't (getting rich). No, but the law keeps busy.” — Matt Dillon ([12:31])
Andy’s innocence:
“When are you gonna hang me? For shooting Mr. Paris?” — Andy Spangler ([22:58])
“Lost Rifle” is a poignant episode that delves deep into the quick judgments and dangerous tensions of frontier life. It offers a classic Western blend of action, moral ambiguity, and ultimately, the redemptive power of compassion. The story underscores how suspicion can cloud justice, but also how honesty and kindness can pave the way for healing, even among the most unlikely allies.
Classic Western justice, delivered with heart.
