Narrator
We present part five of A Change in the Weather, an unlikely adventure for radio by Eric Pringle. Armageddon has snapped at the heels of bank robbers Jiffy Perkins and Burco Madrid. The pack is led by City Nigel, with Detective Sergeant Digley close behind. And a little further back, London gangster BB gritting his teeth to tear them limb from limb. But although the hounds are howling, Jiffy and Burko aren't beaten yet. Like cunning foxes, they have laid a trail pointing ever upwards, taking their pursuers into some very nasty terrain in even nastier weather. And night is coming on Jifa or.
Jiffy Perkins
Any singing up here.
Louise
Listen.
Jiffy Perkins
It's the angel Spurgo. We're done for. Run.
Narrator
Meanwhile, on another part of the darkening.
Louise
Mountain, we'll always banish sadness and strife.
Henrietta
We're going to be benighted, Henry. We shouldn't have come so far.
Louise
Well, if we are, we won't be able to go home in the morning. Every cloud has a silver lin.
Henrietta
Could fall down a precipice.
Louise
Then we'll fall together. We better hold hands, Lou. Oh, thank God we're not alone.
Henrietta
Shouldn't we keep still? Henry, I'm sorry to keep on, but we can't see where we're walking into or off.
Louise
Oh, are you trying to scare me? When I could see and looked at the man, there seemed to be a hut somewhere about. God knows what it's doing up here. Shelter for sheep, probably. And probably a ruin, but shelter if we could find it. Better than spending a night here. We could die out here.
Henrietta
Oh, the fog is shifting. Look, look.
Louise
We can see a bit further. Oh, let's find that hot. Best foot forward. Best foot forward. Sing.
Jiffy Perkins
Sing.
Louise
How are things on Gloramora? Will they find a ruin?
City Nigel
Ghostly voices of the mountain gods. Am I hallucinating? It must be the loss of blood. Is it a siren song? Wagner's Valkyries. Am I going to die here? Stop it, Nigel. You've never given up on a job. You still have your pride and your pistol. This is no time to get lonely. Listen to this wind. It's a Bruckner symphony played in an amphitheater for giants. And where is the great conductor? Come on, Maestro.
Detective Sergeant Digley
City Nigel is waiting.
Detective Inspector
What was that? Nothing. Storm's got inside my head. Never mind, Detective Sergeant. You won't die up here because you're a Lakeland policeman and you know what to do. You've worked your way deep into this crevice, out of the wind. Let the others get a gale up their asses and blow off precipices that's up to them. Oh, that'll do.
BB
Rest.
Detective Inspector
Observe. Observe weather conditions. Diabolical. Observe your personal condition. Lousy. You're stuck. Stuck fast in a cranny all night long. I hate Londoners. If I get out of this, I won't arrest Perkins my train. I'll execute them with me bare hands and that motorcycle maniac Rockforce. All I need in here. Wrap up your troubles in your o kick bag. And smile. Smiling, smiling. What?
Burco Madrid
Here's a sort of barn. Burt, Go. Hey, our luck's in at last.
Jiffy Perkins
Where the hell are we? Paradise.
Burco Madrid
Hey, maybe this place is for climbers.
Jiffy Perkins
There's a lamb and some matches.
Burco Madrid
Here. Look, there's even beds. Well, sort of mattress things. Welcome home, Burt.
Detective Sergeant Digley
Go.
Jiffy Perkins
Is this a miracle, Jim?
Burco Madrid
Of course it is. And it saved our lives.
Jiffy Perkins
Good evening, gentlemen. Sidney.
Burco Madrid
Nigel.
Jiffy Perkins
Nigel. Oh, Jiffy.
Burco Madrid
Your leg's bleeding. Nigel.
City Nigel
I don't shoot with my leg. Jiffy, shoot. The wages of greed is extinction. So saith BB he is the Lord and I am his prophet.
Jiffy Perkins
Oh, don't shoot, Nigel. There has to be a way out of this.
Detective Inspector
There has to be.
Burco Madrid
Listen.
City Nigel
Saved by the cavalry. Who would believe it?
Jiffy Perkins
I believe it.
City Nigel
Don't put a foot wrong. This pistol will be pointing at you all the time.
Louise
We've been saved, Luke. So through and frozen stick. But good heavens, how unlucky.
Jiffy Perkins
Oh, goodness, it's like an hotel, innit?
City Nigel
Good evening, ladies. Welcome. Come in and shut the door.
Detective Inspector
What time is it? I can't see. Me watch. I can't move my arm. Observe the stars. Digley. There are no stars. Oh, put this cramp el's teeth. Oh, wrap up your troubles in your own get back and smile, smile, smile.
Henrietta
As you grow older I'll be constant and true and just like the ivy I'll cling to you. Join us, chaps.
City Nigel
I prefer music.
Louise
Don't be insulting. Let me see your leg.
City Nigel
Keep away.
Louise
Now, now, be brave. We don't want gangrene, do we?
City Nigel
Don't touch it.
Louise
What did you do, step under a falling cliff?
City Nigel
I rode into one.
Jiffy Perkins
Jiffy, can we make a break free? Do you want to bullet up your bum? Who? What we gonna do? How the hell should I know?
Burco Madrid
I'm not a prophet.
Jiffy Perkins
Anyway, I'll give up. If the women go away, we're dead.
Henrietta
Won't you join us, Brian Jo.
Jiffy Perkins
We was talking.
Louise
Well, come and talk over here. I expect you have lots to talk about. Bank robberies and such. You're Jiffy Perkins of Berco Madrid. Your celebrities bank Robbers?
Jiffy Perkins
Never.
Henrietta
Oh, my dears. We recognized you in spite of your hairy disguises.
Louise
Almost everybody in the world has your photograph. Is this solicitor man hunting you, Jiffy? Is he a rat catcher?
City Nigel
Exactly so, ladies. Finely put.
Henrietta
And you're in his trap. You don't seem to have been very successful.
City Nigel
They're total failures. Two of life's scraps.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, that ain't right. You tell him, Jiffy.
Burco Madrid
It is right.
BB
It is. It all goes wrong. Everything we touch turns to ash.
Burco Madrid
Even Billy dropped dead on us. And when we struck oil by accident, it turned out to be poison.
City Nigel
My God. You have a lot to answer for, the people you've put up.
Louise
It's no good feeling sorry for yourselves.
Detective Inspector
Digley feels sorry for himself. His feet have died now, long before the rest of him follows. Hey ho, the wind and the rain.
John
John. Where the hell's Nigel?
Jiffy Perkins
Do you want to go to bed, bb? You're drunk.
John
What the hell else is there to do here?
Jiffy Perkins
Let's go back to London. No way, John.
John
Jiffy, Perkins and Berco. Madrid gotta die first.
Jiffy Perkins
Then we'll go back.
Henrietta
Listen to it out there. It's getting worse.
Burco Madrid
Never mind that now. Let me get this straight. See if I understand.
Henrietta
Nigel's right, you know. This is a frightening world.
Louise
We should stick together.
Burco Madrid
He's never stuck with anybody in his life.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, I don't know, does he? Jiffy and me, we take care of each other.
City Nigel
Well, now I'm here with you, as are these two gracious ladies. Two have become five.
Burco Madrid
Let me get it straight then, will you?
Louise
Go ahead, darling. Straight as a die.
City Nigel
Which is what he does if he doesn't agree.
Burco Madrid
Look, Nigel suggests that since the Kettles are onto us.
Henrietta
Kettles?
City Nigel
The first lady, the old Bill. And talking about old Bill, jiffy. Don't forget B.B. our mutual friend. Not to mention me.
Jiffy Perkins
Don't be be Jiffy. Shut up.
Burco Madrid
Because of the Kettles, we can't go back for the loot ourselves. Instead, Henry and Lou collect it for, and then it's equal shares all round.
City Nigel
Five ways I could kill the four of you and have it all. You realize I'm being generous?
Louise
We're truly grateful, darling.
Jiffy Perkins
And then we go to Spain.
Louise
Bless you.
City Nigel
Thank you. I shall whiz round the world's music festivals on a new motorcycle. Salzburg, Lucerne, Bayreuth, Edinburgh. No, perhaps not Edinburgh. I shall have to disappear from these shores.
Burco Madrid
We did the work and you get the loot. I don't like that.
City Nigel
Liking is irrelevant. Living is what we're talking about.
Jiffy Perkins
I agree Jeffrey, it's been a terrible day.
Burco Madrid
Oh, okay, I agree.
City Nigel
Sensible fellow. Now you'll see them all.
Jiffy Perkins
We can get the Granada then.
Louise
Never mind Granada. Let's get to brass tacks. We must plan this carefully.
City Nigel
You can't go back to your hotel, of course.
Henrietta
But our cases, all our things.
Louise
He's right. We mustn't seen again.
Henrietta
Not ever.
Louise
Not even by our families? Especially by our families. Don't you see what this means?
Henrietta
Oh, yes, right. Oh, yes, right.
Detective Inspector
Observe.
Jiffy Perkins
De. You fantastic policeman. Both your legs are dead.
Detective Inspector
You paralyzed from the waist down. Now what are you gonna do?
Detective Sergeant Digley
Help.
Burco Madrid
Help.
Narrator
That's right.
Detective Inspector
Finish me off with an avalanche.
Louise
Oh, what a sparkling morning. Sunshine on the mountaintop.
Henrietta
Isn't it beautiful? Who last night could have expected this?
Louise
Oh, what a beautiful morning. Oh, what a beautiful day.
City Nigel
Scenery has no importance now. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And for this beholder, it resides in £200,000. So, six o' clock this evening at the Bowelstone.
Burco Madrid
Now, you're sure you know where the loot is?
Louise
X marks the spot. Darling, we've been over it a hundred times.
Jiffy Perkins
Were you scared?
Henrietta
To death, actually. But nothing ventured.
City Nigel
Good luck.
Henrietta
Goodbye.
Louise
Come on, Lou.
Jiffy Perkins
Yes, right.
Louise
Hi ho, hi ho get off to work we go hi ho, hi ho.
Detective Inspector
I hope you know what you're doing, Nigel. They've no experience.
City Nigel
That's precisely why they'll get away with it. Innocence is a great disguise. I had it once myself, but it didn't last. Look at them. Who would suspect those two of any criminal intent? They're your only chance, Jiffy. If they fail, you're dead. We'll go separate ways from here. You go that way. I'll go down here.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, I hope we don't get lost again, Jiffy, like we did last time.
Burco Madrid
Stop moaning, Burgo, please. Get down the mouth.
Henrietta
Dig.
Louise
Dig in the woods the whole day.
Jiffy Perkins
Through Dig.
Louise
Is what we like to do. Oh, what a heist, Lou. There's not a single sign of police or gangsters. Oh, just the birds and us. And a little further down in this soil. A million pounds.
Henrietta
Our time has come at last.
Jiffy Perkins
It's so exhilarating.
Henrietta
I haven't felt like this since I was a girl. This will revolutionize our lives, won't it? The possibilities are frightening. The way I feel is frightening.
Louise
It's called happiness. We're not used to it. Aha. I've hit something.
Henrietta
A new life is beginning. It's being born now, this minute. I can feel it.
Louise
So can I. A life of Riley Spiced with a little danger to give it a flavor. All five. Thanks to Billy Potts, a man we've never met.
Henrietta
Oh, thank you, Billy.
Louise
Oh, digloo, let's get this show on the road.
Jiffy Perkins
The inspector will see you now, Detective Sergeant Digley.
BB
I'll wheel you in, shall I?
Narrator
If you must.
Detective Inspector
I know what he'll say. He'll say, where have you been, Detective Sergeant? Observing, sir. I spent the night on observation duty up a mountain and became lodged in a rock crevice. Yes, sir. Lodgings for the night. Very funny. That's right, sir. Rock around the clock.
BB
Thank you, Constable.
Jiffy Perkins
Very good, sir.
BB
Well, Detective Sergeant?
Detective Inspector
Not really, sir. My right foot's still paralyzed.
BB
I'll give you 30 minutes to get back the use of your legs, sir. 30 minutes to leap out of that wheelchair and into action, or I'll have you legless for life for bringing disgrace on the station. We're supposed to do the helping. We're not the ones who get reported missing, get themselves wedged, bring the fells down with their cries and have to be prized out by a school party like a pip out of an orange. Behavior like that causes the public to lose faith. Not to mention our city friends, who.
John
Entrusted this to us.
Detective Inspector
Yes, sir.
BB
It gets especially aggravating when we're chronically undermanned and London villains are wandering all over the patch. And on top of that, two respectable ladies walk out of their hotel, leaving all their things behind and don't go back. Ladies Plus a waiter from the same hotel has also vanished into thin air. Plus an itinerant boatman, ditto. Everybody's disappearing. It's like the Bermuda Bloody Triangle. Mountain rescuer out in force. What's happened?
Jiffy Perkins
Why?
BB
Abducted, murdered, run away, who knows? It's up to you to find out.
Detective Inspector
I've caught pneumonia, sir.
BB
Be sure your sins will find you out. These vanishings could be coincidental, or they could all be due to last night's storm. On the other hand, we could be dealing with a multiple elopement or a mass spur of the moment evacuation of the Lake District. If you're going to die of pneumonia, I'd like you to delay your exit long enough to solve this mystery for us. Now get your ass out of that invalid carriage, Detective Sergeant.
Detective Inspector
Yes, sir.
Jiffy Perkins
Telephone call for Detective Sergeant Digley. Siri, it's five past six. Nigel's getting trigger happy. Knock him.
City Nigel
They'd better hurry. This leg's place playing me up.
Burco Madrid
You should see a doctor, Nigel.
City Nigel
I don't believe in doctors.
Jiffy Perkins
Oh, that Trust doctors Nigel. My ma says it's not having faith in gold.
City Nigel
I don't trust God either. Look at the height of that stone. Why do they call it the Bowder Stone?
Jiffy Perkins
Search me. They even got a ladder up here. I won't go up there.
City Nigel
I couldn't.
Burco Madrid
Don't look at me.
Detective Inspector
Listen.
Burco Madrid
I thought I heard him coming.
City Nigel
This is the first time I've ever worked with anyone else. Makes me edgy.
Burco Madrid
Don't get edgy, Nigel. I'm edgy for both of us.
City Nigel
They better hurry up for both your sakes. Because if anything goes wrong, I'll have to shoot you.
John
Wrong, Nigel. I'll have to shoot all of you.
City Nigel
Phoebe.
Detective Inspector
Phoebe.
Jiffy Perkins
Oh, my God.
John
Don't run, boys. No use to even walk. My other boys are all around. They're tired of waiting for you to do your job, Nigel. And they're edgy. Ain't that right, boys? Sure, bb.
Jiffy Perkins
Cool. I can see Dan's Jiffy poking out the bushes.
John
Of course you can, Burko. They're pointing at your belly. And at yours, Nigel. And yours, Jiffy.
Burco Madrid
It was an accident, baby. A mistake.
Jiffy Perkins
Yeah, we didn't mean.
Burco Madrid
No arm.
Jiffy Perkins
Shut up.
City Nigel
Let me explain, bb. This is all part of my plant.
John
Peter.
Jiffy Perkins
When you see him.
John
I know all about your plan, Nigel. I can't trust anybody anymore. Not even a dedicated career villain like you. The world's gone bad.
Jiffy Perkins
You're all rubbish.
John
Rotten, gangrenous waste. Now to be wasted.
City Nigel
How did you find out you was grassed?
John
On time and place and people. The old ruddy scenario. Well, now the curtain's coming down. So let's have my money.
Burco Madrid
We haven't got it.
Jiffy Perkins
Not a besaita.
City Nigel
Who told you? As if I didn't know.
John
Two helpful ladies with sharp eyes and sharp eyes wits.
Detective Inspector
Bloody hell, Burger.
Jiffy Perkins
I don't understand.
John
Don't get devious again, Nigel. What are you talking about?
Detective Sergeant Digley
An arrest, You London loonies. You're under arrest.
John
Who the hell's that?
City Nigel
Where?
Detective Sergeant Digley
Up here. Top of the Bowder Stone. My name is Digley. Detective Sergeant Digley of Keswick Constabulary. You towny termites. You're surrounded. You're all surrounded. Including the fools in the forest. I have men everywhere. English Lakeland is crawling with Digglis. Policemen. And you're all under arrest.
Burco Madrid
I don't believe it.
Jiffy Perkins
Ain't we going to Spain, Jiffy?
John
You gave your Aristus from up there. John.
Detective Sergeant Digley
I'm coming down. Wait there.
Detective Inspector
I.
Detective Sergeant Digley
Don't try anything funny. My foot's a bit numb. You'll have to Be patient. You can be getting the money ready.
Burco Madrid
Money?
Detective Sergeant Digley
You rob the bank, didn't you? You can't fool me like you fooled him, you cockney carcass. You'll get years and years. What a cop. What a cop. This is the peak of my career, you city slickers.
City Nigel
He wants the money, bb.
Burco Madrid
We haven't even seen the money.
Detective Sergeant Digley
Don't get funny with me. I know you've got. Damn, my foot's still paralyzed.
Burco Madrid
Yeah, this table's all right. Virgo got a view of the exercise yard if you're happy with it.
Jiffy Perkins
No, I'm happy if you are, Jiffy. You know that one table's the same.
Burco Madrid
As another behind bars.
Jiffy Perkins
I don't feel bad.
Burco Madrid
Well, it was my idea, wasn't it? My stupid idea.
Jiffy Perkins
Here, these are good sausages. And you'll like the mash, you feet. The mash is really something.
Burco Madrid
Could have been Spanish omelettes.
Jiffy Perkins
Yeah, with flamenco dancers round the tables. Yeah, but the mash is all right.
City Nigel
Lord.
Burco Madrid
Conned by two musical females.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, I was, too. We all was.
Burco Madrid
Look, I'm trying to apologize, Berto.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, I don't want you to, Jiffy. I'll get embarrassed. Oh, well, it could be worse. We could have been split up.
Burco Madrid
We never even got a snip of the money. All we did was look after it for a little while, like custodians. And here we are back in Brixton, half a mile from the bank where we started.
Jiffy Perkins
Eat your bangers, Jiffy.
Burco Madrid
What I'm saying is, there's a lesson in it.
Jiffy Perkins
Yeah. Don't go to the Lake District.
Burco Madrid
I'm gonna listen to you from now on.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, I don't think it's fair, BB Getting off scot free. Wow.
Burco Madrid
He got a flashbarrister, didn't he? Yeah, he talked his way right out of bother.
Jiffy Perkins
Bought himself off near enough. So he's out there. Plenty more bank takeaways. Yeah. Wow. That's well out of order.
Burco Madrid
Because he's richer than us. That's the way this country works. And Nigel's faster than us. They couldn't even get him to court, could they?
Jiffy Perkins
Yeah. He dodged his escort.
Burco Madrid
Nick left park, motorbike.
Jiffy Perkins
Nobody could catch him.
Burco Madrid
He'll be over the sea now, watching festivals.
Detective Sergeant Digley
Yeah.
Jiffy Perkins
Riding the bulls at Pamplona.
Burco Madrid
Ole Nigel. Yeah. It's funny that the one who didn't get apart from us, that is, was the sergeant. He's not laughing, is he? Incarcerated in bandages and cement.
Jiffy Perkins
Now. You know, Jeff, I reckon we was on the same side and who ever thought of that? Hushing a kettle?
Burco Madrid
I don't get it.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, it's right, in a manner of speaking.
Detective Inspector
Yeah.
Jiffy Perkins
Well, I mean, Digley couldn't afford a private hospital, could he, anymore? We could get a barrister. So he's got the National Health and we got Legal Aid. And now he's behind bandages and we're behind bars.
Burco Madrid
That's very deep, Burko.
Jiffy Perkins
Yeah, well, you get time to think in here, but it ain't easy. Oh, that reminds me, Jiffy. I wanted to ask you something. I got a letter.
Burco Madrid
Who sends you a letter? You can't read shot.
Jiffy Perkins
Everybody knows that. Would you read it to me?
Burco Madrid
Yeah.
Jiffy Perkins
Give it here. Here.
Burco Madrid
What you been up to, Berto? You got a Spanish letter.
Detective Inspector
Spain.
Jiffy Perkins
Oh, Jeffrey. Whereabouts in Spain?
Burco Madrid
Well, it just says Espana.
John
Here.
Burco Madrid
This is to both of us. It's from them.
Jiffy Perkins
Henry and Lou. Hey, listen, listen. Hola, amigos. Oh, that's Spanish, all right. Shut up. Listen.
Louise
We found the money, darlings, right where you said it was. Like finding buried treasure. And we thought, find us keepers.
Henrietta
What an adventure it would be to.
Louise
Keep all of it. After all, we hadn't seen. Stolen it. So our consciences were clear.
Henrietta
So we tidied up, made sure there were no loose ends lying about to trip us up later.
Louise
Swept you all onto the carpet. We were doing our bit for society by ridding the world of a few villains. And we made that Policeman's Day.
Henrietta
Once we had made up our minds to be adventurous, you see, everything became simple. We discovered the secret of happiness. You simply turn your back on your responsibilities and walk away.
Louise
Run away as you did, darlings. Only we're better at it than you.
Henrietta
That was the theory, anyway.
Louise
That was the plan, darlings. And it worked beautifully. But we hadn't bargained for feelings. Exactly. We've become friends, the four of us, haven't we? And while you might do that sort of thing to families, you don't do it to friends.
Henrietta
We're sorry. Friends.
Louise
Now, we want to make amends. We've been following your fortunes. Lack of fortune. And we feel responsible, affectionate.
Henrietta
So we've invested most of the money and bought a safe house. A beautiful casa by the sea. And when you're released, we'll make arrangements for you to join us. Or we might even break you out of prison.
Louise
So there you are, darlings. If this is an offer you can't refuse, we shall all live happily ever after. Adios.
Henrietta
Buenos notches, amigos.
Jiffy Perkins
When it's not just amigos. Jeez, Jimmy, wake us out.
Burco Madrid
There's a prospect.
Jiffy Perkins
What do you think? Well, will you write back and ask if we can have balls? Gfi. Jiffy. Now, there's something else I wanted. Oscar.
Henrietta
Oh, God.
Jiffy Perkins
Do you think Billy's in heaven?
Burco Madrid
Of course he is. Hi, Billy.
Jiffy Perkins
I knew it. I really knew it. Well, everything's all right then, isn't it? Yeah, Burgo.
Burco Madrid
Everything's fine.
Narrator
Well, well, can this be the end of the story? Can we possibly leave Jiffy Perkins in Burca Madrid, incarcerated forever with bangers and mash? Perish the thought. They may be back in their beloved London, but behind bars they might as well be in Timbuktu. Or Spain. Oh, dear. Perhaps Burka will never get to Spain now. Perhaps Henrietta and Louise will never get out. Yet can BB Be content simply to say goodbye to his ill but never gotten games? Can City Nigel be happy listening to flutes instead of the music of his victim's cries? And don't underestimate Sergeant Digley. Already he's peering through his bandages, wondering if it's safe to come out. Many questions remain to be answered. What everybody needs is another change in the weather. Meanwhile, Jiffy Perkins and Virco Madrid were played by Peter Craze and John Hollis. Henrietta and Louise by Dilys Lay and Polly. James City Nigel by Philip Sully, BB William Simons, John Richard Tate, the Detective Inspector David Sinclair and Detective Sergeant Digley by Trevor Nichols. Technical presentation was by David Greenwood, Jessica Bowles and Allison Mackenzie. A Change in the Weather was written by Eric Pringle and directed by Ian Cottage.
