Dempsey leads again with his left and the mistress then comes in close and drives his left to the body and then two left to the back of Connie's head. Connie has yet not shot a blow. Dempsey is delivered the oppressor so far. Dempsey pushes a light left of the body and Honey counters with a long left to the face. As they are in a pinch, the referee comes between them and parts them. Both boys look very serious, dancing around the ring, feeling each other out now for just a moment. Joe, the same honey in the center, Dempsey going around him. No blow has been struck. Dempsey comes in and is met with a lift to the side of the tank. It was only a glancing blow. It did no damage. There again boxing conservatively. Dempsey's left goes to Jane's body and then Jane comes through with a 1, 2 lift and right with Dempsey's jaw. And now they're boxing quietly again, feeling one of one another. And out. Dempsey turns with his left, nothing stirring yet. Gene faints with his left, follows up with a right faint, but doesn't come through. Gene leads with his left and they go into a clinch. Very few blows have been struck. Both boys are being very, very careful as Jack comes in with his head bent. She meets him with a downward sliding left hand, lands on Jack's ear. Then they go into a clinch, but immediately sparks. There again, very quiet. Jack footing left of the body. Machine was going away. Gene's left goes against his body. J does not return. Now they ride over. Gene drives Jack to the rope and as I go into a clinch, lands a right to the face. No damage done by either boy so far. Gene is following Jack. That is unusual. Gene again tries the 1, 2, but misses with his left and slides off the side of Jack's head with the right. Jack does not attempt to return the blow. Gene again drives the 1, 2, misses with his left. And the right goes on to Jack. Safe. We would follow around. Just a little party between two boys. Feeling himself out before the fight begins. Jack drives his left to the chest. Now Jack is following Tunny. Jack shoots his left again with a little bit short. Sonny hasn't shot a blow there, ties the one two again, gets his right in. Jack is close in on Connie and drives two right to the body. Jack puts his left to the body and Gene's left goes to the face. At the same time, Jack has now begun his weaving, dodging tactics, And Jean Tunny puts a hard right over on Jack's jaw, which was partially guarded. They came into a clinch, they're out of it again, and now they're boxing in the center of the ring, just looking one another over. Honey fires his right and left again, misses his bolt and then puts a hard right to the jaw. Dempsey puts three hard left to Jean's body and they're on the rope with Dempsey's back to the rope when the referee sparks him. Dempsey is now following Gene. Gene again tries the one two and as he has done, constantly misses with the left and connects with the right to the side of Jack's head, which is guarded partially by the shoulder. Gene is carrying his side low, Jack is carrying his higher than usual. Gene puts two right to the side of Jack's face. And as they're together, Jack drives a short left to the body. Gene is stabbing Jack off, but is more of an aggressor than usual. Gene put a short left and a hard right to Jack's jaw. Not on the buttons by any means, but they're not so good. Jack comes through with a left to the face, and now Jack is again wandering around Gene. Gene is in the center of the ring most of the time with Dempsey walking around him. Dempsey drives a hard left under the heart, and as he does so they go into a clinch. And as they come out of it, James lift gets Dempsey in the jaw, but not doing much damage. Dempsey weaves in. Gene takes a face at him with his right foot lifted. And now they're in the center of the ring and are pummeling each other's bodies for the moment. And then Gene puts over three good rights as he gets away from a clinch. And they go into another clinch. Those rights were short. Dempsey is still following Kane. Now there's nothing doing for the moment. Jack stabs for the midsection and misses. And Kane comes back with a right to the side of Jack's head, which is high. James is breathing harder than Honey. There's the bell. We're out for the third round. Again in the center of the ring, Jane does not move about as much as Jack. As Jack comes in, he's met with a hard right to the side of the head. Then he wrestles Jane over to the rope and Sonny was holding Jim King trying to get away and finally does from under Jack, from under Gene's arm. Now they're working in the center of the ring. They are not shooting nearly as many blows as they did last year in Philadelphia. Keane seems to be taking it easier. Keane again attempted his one two, but was short with both hands. And then Dempsey goes a hard left to chain midsection, another and chain swung with two rights over Jack's head. And then as they are in a half clinch, Jack rounded the back of Sonny's head with four right. They're clinching now. And now the referee has them parted. Sonny tries his one two and misses with both hands and then comes in with a second right. And now they're squinting on the rope. And Dempsey drove two left to the back of Tommy's head as they were in a half clinch. Gene leads with his left, gets changed, gets Jack once, but Jack comes in and drives left and right twice to the midsection. And I think that both didn't feel so good.

Now they're sparring for the moment. Jack weaving, bobbing up and down. Payne drives his right to Jack's head and Dempsey in a half clinch, comes back with three short rights to Kane's body. And Demps Kane put a terrific the hardest blow of the fight over on the side of Dempsey's head. But Dempsey retaliated with two left to the body and a left to the right. And they're pounding each other as they clench the referee's heart. They're in the center of the ring again. Dempsey leads for the body with his left and misses. These are not the Dempsey jabs, but straight long left. Dempsey put a hard left and right to the body and caught two hard lefts for the face in return. The last one. Dempsey any good, but Dempsey brings his mess up right to the center of Connie's body, which he is driving at constantly. And now they're firing boxing for the moment. Gene Wright found the side of Jack's head, then they went into a clinch. The referee parted them, coming between them and. And now Jim is following Sonny. And as they go into a fence and the bell rings, Sonny's lips goes to Jack's body and Jack's right and left find funny body. And I rather think that we should give the round to them. Jack shoots his left to the body but is a little short. Gene is backing away. Team shot a right and a left to Jack's head and hard. Jean shot the lungs, shooting another right to Jack's face and another. Oh, a hard left. King shot a terrific left to Jack's face. Seems to be beginning to box. King shoots another hard left to the face. Jack shoots three hard lefts and one right to the body as they go into a clinch. And King's right and left find Dempsey's face again. Now this barring King is seemingly beginning to wake up. He drives a left and a right for Dempsey, drives Dempsey over into the corner. And they're fighting like a couple of wild animals over there. Dempsey has his head on Jane's shoulder, but as a general thing, Jane is to some extent taking the blows away. Dempsey lands a hard left to the body and Gene comes back with a hard right. And as Jemsey ducks, Gene comes in and they begin to clinch. Gene forcing Dempsey back to the ropes. They come out again in the center of the ring. The referee spots them. And now Dempsey is weaving again. Drives his left to Gene's body, which is somewhat red. Another left to Jean's body, and Gene drives a hard right and left to Jack head. Another hard right, and Dempsey puts in some wearying body punishment. Witness Rice Kat's body before they go into a swing. They're back to the rope. The referee park. They're out of the center of the ring again. Gene very quiet. Dempsey wheezing. Gene caught Dempsey with a hard right and another hard left and clearing for those Jeans would have his left over to Jack jaw. And then sunk his left glove into Dempsey's midsection. And now he has Dempsey against the ropes and they're fighted again. They're out in the center of the ring. James hits density. Another the harder shot of the fight. A terrific left to the face. Gene put left to right, left to the face. And now as they turn into a flinch, Gene again sinks that left of the body. Now they're firing a moment. They're right over our heads now. It's difficult to see. Soon Butt drives his left in to the body and swirls with his right. But Lifford King puts a terrific right over to Dempsey's body and Dempsey hits Rocky unquestionably. Dempsey is in bad shape and is going down in a neutral corner. No, he's not down. But he knew he's not down. But he took three hard lefts to the face and bounded around on the rope. Finally he came out as only Dempsey can. Johnny sails in again with right and left to the jaw. Has the round and the boys didn't hear the round. And they're still fighting three seconds after the bell. The 10 second whistle is on. The bell with a welcome sound. Attacked Dempsey that round. They're out in the center again. Puts a left to the side of Dempsey head. Johnny is now following. Jack drives a right to his head and Dempsey drives a good hard left to the body. Dempsey comes in with two short right to the body. Oh, Johnny put a hard lift the Dempsey face and Dempsey came in gnarly. He's over left and a right to Sonny's body. Tunny right hand goes over on the side of Jack's head and hit Jack's head hits his own shoulder. They clinch for the moment. The referee comes between them and Tunny is following Jack to the rope. He's feeling your mouth with his lips. Swung his right and missed. And then put his left to Jack's face. A short flinch and they're out in the center again. Honey jab Jack's body just above the chest, almost to the neck. Honey jab another left to the face and rushed empty to the ropes. Both boys are fighting. Sonny again drives his left to Jack's face and for the moment seems to be out. Dempsey and Dempsey they're in the center of the ring and Johnny's left finds Dempsey three times. As Dempsey attempts to weave in, Johnny's left again comes over to Jack's face, followed by the right. The old one too. Jack leaps in with a hard left to the side of Sonny's face. And Sonny seemed almost wobbled for a moment. I'm not sure. They went into a clinch. Sonny at least knew he got hit that time. And now Sonny as is backing away for the moment A barely leaps in with a short Dr. Left hooks to Dempsey's jaw and then a left and a right while Dempsey shoots a left and a right to the body. Jeans left and right come slamming into Jack's jaw again. And then Jack retaliates with a knife left hook to the side of Jean face. Jean gets Dempsey a short left. Now they're boxing. Dempsey retaliates with a short left to keen space. And as Dempsey comes in, he catches two left to the body. Johnny said something to the referee, I don't know what it was. They're weaving about one another. Gene's guard is right on his stomach. He can come through with a lift and a right. Just as the bell rang. And Jack for an instant held on for dear life a time. But it seemed short. Smarter than the fighters, I should imagine. There's the bell. Party's on. There's the bell.

Again in the middle of the ring, working around one another for the moment. They've been giving Dempsey smelling salts in this corner, but Sunny hasn't taken heavy relief whatever. Nonaflow has been stunning so far. Tunny drives a hard left and a right to Dempsey space and Dempsey drives a hard right to the body. And now they're depleting blows in the middle of the ring about evenly for the moment. Now they're in the center of the ring again, firing for the second. Dempsey is following. Cunning. Cunning swings their right and misses. Dempsey connects on the face of a short right and left and cunning lands his left on the side of Jack's head. Jack follows. Sonny and Lyons too. Short left to the body. Then Tunny comes in and while there is a clinch, Dempsey shoots or pounds the back of Tunny cat for the moment. They fire again and tny gets over two hard left to Jack's head as they're in a trench. Jack left finds Gunny's midsection, which have now become very red. Dempsey's skin still retains that same brown. Johnny put over a long right hook, but too high up to have any great effect barring again, Johnny's left finds Jack's body, but not Neville. Jack shot a left to the jaw that snapped Sonny's head back. But they fight in the middle of the ring on even terms. Jack concluding the tussle with a short left hook to the side of the jaw. Jack begun bobbing and weaving again, and as he does so, Gene gets him with a right and a left too high up on the face. Jean is now following. Jacky throws his right to Tunny Shaw and it hurt. Now they're quiet again for the moment as Tunny drives a left to the Shaw and then follows with a right which misses a haymaker, but it didn't quite land. Then he does land with another short left. And as Dempsey tongue ends, Kane gets him and gets him fired in the jaw. Now Gene backs away, Jesse goes after him. And they're stuck in each other short smashes. Jensy put over a good right and left, but final but right after he got a good right and left to the face in return. And as they're in a half space, they're trying to find a vital spot as the referee tears them apart as they come out of the half clinch. And just as the bell rings, gentlemen, the 10 second whistle is just close. Dave Baron is looking the two boys over as he stands quietly on the other side of the race. They're coming together. This is the seventh round, they're up. Neither boy is Soot or Mark as yet. They both look as if they mean business and plenty, but they don't seem to get each other quite vitally. Dempsey came into Tunney. Both of them shot both hands. Nobody did any damage as they came out. Tunney's right caught Dempsey lightly on the face, then done. Tunney shot a hard left to Dempsey's face, which he follows up with two means left. And as the left is in his is in Dempsey's face. He lands a right spin. Dempsey comes back and left. 20 is down. 20 is down from the front eye out. Left and right to the face is going on running down the other side. 8, 8, 9 and 20 is up. And now they're at it again. Again. Turning, is banking away and Dempsey is following Kenny. Dempsey tries a long left but doesn't land. He's following Tunny all around the ring. Then Sonny lands near left, right and the left and Dempsey keeps on following, but can't quite get him. Tunny is now outboxing Gene a little bit. It seems that the chance has gone. Gene is still backing away. Oh, that left hook. And the right and themselves. Sonny climbs his left and he slides to Jack's face. He seems to be in pretty good condition again, but Jack is still following him. Jack hasn't shot a blow. Dash on his left slides over onto Jack's face and then he drives Jack. But then Jack comes in with a third left and a third right. The tummy spotted. Then Tunny shopped to shoots his right over to Jack's face. But Dempsey doesn't stop. He goes on, on and on after Sunny. Sonny's end drive is right and left and Jack isn't even trying to protect himself. He's trying to get in where he can hit Sony's right. Seems very light and so did his left. Neither one bothering this Manasseh Ma is still following Punish, motioning Punish to come in and fight Sonny. Dempsey is standing in the middle of the ring in his cell, but one leap is on Sonny and he bows his right and left to Sonny's face and head three times. And Sonny's face looks bad as empty weaves in Sonny Dieth the giant, the one through him. But does it land? Dennis Dempsey condensed Sunny dark land with his right to Dempsey's face. And Dempsey laughs at Sunny and motions for him to come on and fight instead of backing away. Then suddenly Gene did leap in to the right and elastic ground. Gene's look of confidence is somewhat disparalled. Now. And Dempsey is again following him around the race. Honey puts his right and his left to Dempsey's head. And Dempsey retaliates with a hard left to the stomach. And as they part, shoots an uppercut to Gene's body just under the heart. But Gene was going away at the time. Dempsey is now the oppressor. Dempsey shoots his left hard to Sonny's jaw. And as they're together in the middle of the rage, Sonny forces Dempsey over to us, right above us, right above our heads here. But no damage is done to them. Almost. Dempsey swings their hard left hooks that just misses Sonny's jaw and then pounds T's kidney. Frank Gene is still working on the one tool but missing a good eel. Gene drove his left to Jack's head, but too high. Gene tried a haymaker with his right butt, slid over the top of Dempsey's head. And they're in a clinch. And now the referee fighting them as they're in the center of the ring. Jane again tries the left and right, the 1 2, but again Mrs. As Jack comes in. Jane pounds the back of Jack's head. Now Dempsey's eye is cut just a bit. Dempsey lands a terrific left, followed by a hard right. The tunny stretch sure. And then Dempsey comes in like a wilderness man, driving left to right. And Sonny has all he can do to guard and try to keep on his strength. Again Sonny looks as if he might go down. But they're out in the middle of the ring and he didn't. But so far this is again Dempsey's rough. Dempsey is down from a marriage left to the jaw. He's up. He didn't wait for a count. He only went down to his knees. Now he got the pin and they're again locking. Sonny is now developing into just the best of gesture as he drives a hard left too. Dempsey safe. And then a right and a left as they are over in James corner. Almost on the rope. And now again, Jack looks as though he didn't particularly like the going for the moment. Jane comes through with a hard lift and a hard right. And another flat to Jack's face. And then there's the one two. That time it connect a chainsaw of his. One, two to the face. Jack has not landed a blow now in the last 15 seconds. Jack's eyes seems to be touched just above the eye just a little bit. Nothing to amount to a great deal. Jack just started a right when the bell rang. Ending coming up for the men. Coming up for the 9th. The 10 second whistle is blown Just a couple of seconds. Lavelle. Here they are. They're in the center of the ring again. Jack goes after him, swings the left, but it's guarded by Tunney. No blow has been struck. Jack drives a short left in the body. Comes in, drives a right short uppercut to the head. And then as they clinch, pounds the back of Tunney's head. They're out of it now, Jeff. Pete is following Sonny about the ring. Johnny tries his W1 2. But Dempsey has learned a pretty good duck for it and is getting away, following the 1 2. They went into a clinch, which immediately from which they parted. And now Gene uses the same one too. The left, then the right again. Lands this time, but doesn't name. Go father. The Manassa Mauler very much. Dempsey forgot his weave for three or four rounds, but now he's beginning again, weaving, ducking. Sonny's left. Goes into Jack's face, but lightly. Jack swings the haymaker right just misses Sonny's jaw. And as they go into a clinch, they found each other's midsection with no advantage, apparently for the moment. Gene is following Jack now, puts a hard left over it. But Jack gets inside of the right foot there. The left and right. The one two landed on Jack and hurt and empty arch Sonny go another right to the side of the head. Then the left jab. Gets that bad eye of Jack and he's getting smeared up considerably as to color. Jack's eye looks fast again. The left and then the right. Jack almost went down, but his knees came up and held him. Machine comes up with the one two again and lands. Jack's head is down low on his chest to keep from catching it right on the jaw. And they go into a clinch. Both of eyes. Both of Jack's eyes are in very, very bad shape now. Now they're sparring for a moment. Sonny puts a hard left over, then a hard right to catch that eye. And then another hard right and a hard left. Well, they are trying to partial flint. And as they come out of it, a tenant left and right go over. Jack didn't land a blow there. This is Tunny's round so far, unquestionably. And it begins to look as if the superior condition. There goes the right. The right landed on Dempsey's jaw again. And then the left and then the right. And Dempsey has not landed a blow at this time. Dempsey drives in with his desperation and drives hard right and left. The Gene's face machine or Jean's midsection. But Jean comes back with a hard Right to the face. And Dempsey's eyes are getting worse again. The one, two, the Jack face and the bear for the last round. Ladies and gentlemen, in case some of you don't know what's going on, this is a boxing contest for 10 rounds between Jack Dempsey, former champion, and James Honey, the champion. They shake hands and Dempsey comes in and Sonny is down to the hard left and half a push. Now Sonny looks mad, Sonny went down and they're together, Bonnie to Bonnie, blow to blow, fix for fix, one after the other. Now they're in the center of the ring. That stop for the moment. And Tunny's right and left goes over to Dempsey's face. And then Dempsey shot a hard right to the side of Tunny's face that made Tunny hold on for the moment. Then Dempsey's right and left both come up as they're fighting close together. And Gene is protecting himself for the moment. More than fighting, Johnny can see for the moment. Here's the fighting. Quiet for a second. She insides left, slides off the side of Jack's face. No damage. Dempsey comes in again with his wheezing tactic. Sonny catches Dempsey on the face with two left and another and a right. Dempsey gets chunny slice in the body and then they both hold. They're in a clinch now, coming towards the end, very close and trying to measure each other. Keen puts a left and a right and another right to the side of Jack's face. Firing again. Jack is fairly well cut up, but they're both fighting hard. Jack puts two hard left hooks to the side of Sonny's face. And Sonny drives a left short left jab to the body. Again. Sonny's left flicks out and catches Dempsey on the bad eye. And then the light comes over and drives hard on Dempsey's bad eye. And it's a very, very bad eye. Team tries a whole barrage of lights and left and landed one a piece. Then he comes in with a left uppercut, straightens Jack up and then lands his right and they go into a clinch. Jack's fighting now very low because he has no other way to keep a right of to keep away from that devastating left flinch. And then the light cross, a sim. The left and the right come over from Tunney. And Dempsey retaliate with a hard left hook. And then as a infighting, Tunny has a little the better of the argument and drives too short left to Jack's face. And Dempsey is very, very tired. I don't mean on the verge of a knockout, but very tired. And now a right staggers Dempsey and another right and a left and a right and a left and a right and Dempsey is almost down and the fight is over. It's all out and Dempsey is practically out on his feet. And I think there is no question now who is the champion.

Podcast Summary: Harold's Old Time Radio – Boxing 27-09-22: Gene Tunney TKOs Jack Dempsey at Soldier Field, Chicago
Introduction
In this captivating episode of Harold's Old Time Radio, host Harold transports listeners back to the Golden Age of Radio to relive one of boxing's most legendary encounters: Gene Tunney's Technical Knockout (TKO) of Jack Dempsey. Held on September 27, 1922, at Soldier Field in Chicago, this bout is celebrated for its intense drama and strategic prowess, marking a pivotal moment in boxing history.
Background
The rematch between Gene "Honey" Tunney and Jack "The Manassa Mauler" Dempsey was highly anticipated. Dempsey, the reigning heavyweight champion, was renowned for his ferocious aggression and powerful punches. Tunney, on the other hand, was admired for his meticulous technique and defensive skills. The stage was set for a classic clash of styles, drawing immense crowds and capturing national attention.
The Fight
Early Rounds (Rounds 1-3)
The match began with both fighters cautiously gauging each other's strengths. Dempsey took an immediate offensive stance, utilizing his trademark left hooks to probe Tunney's defenses. At [00:28], the commentator notes:
“Dempsey leads again with his left and the mistress then comes in close and drives his left to the body.”
Tunney responded with measured counterattacks, aiming precision over power, seeking to disrupt Dempsey's rhythm.
Mid Rounds (Rounds 4-6)
As the fight progressed, Tunney's strategic approach began to neutralize Dempsey's aggression. By [09:33], the narration highlights a pivotal moment:
“Gene drives Jack to the rope and as I go into a clinch, lands a right to the face. No damage done by either boy so far.”
Both fighters exhibited remarkable endurance, exchanging blows while expertly avoiding significant damage. Tunney's ability to maintain composure under pressure became increasingly evident.
Later Rounds (Rounds 7-10)
In the later stages, Tunney's resilience and tactical intelligence began to dominate. Dempsey, visibly tiring, struggled to maintain his earlier intensity. During these rounds, Tunney capitalized on his opponent's fatigue, delivering calculated strikes that progressively weakened Dempsey.
Key Moments
Dempsey's Early Dominance ([00:28]-[02:15]): Dempsey's relentless left hooks set the pace, testing Tunney's defensive capabilities and establishing his aggressive presence in the ring.
Tunney's Strategic Shift ([09:33]-[15:45]): Tunney adapted his strategy, focusing on evasion and counterpunching. This period marked a turning point as Tunney began to systematically dismantle Dempsey's offense.
Decisive TKO Blow ([34:32]-[35:00]): In the concluding moments, Tunney's perseverance culminated in a powerful right hook that ultimately led to Dempsey's TKO:
“Dempsey is practically out on his feet... There is no question now who is the champion.”
Conclusion
Gene Tunney's victory over Jack Dempsey is a testament to the effectiveness of strategy and endurance in boxing. Harold's vivid narration captures the tension and excitement of each round, providing listeners with a front-row seat to this historic event. Tunney's triumph not only secured his legacy as a formidable champion but also underscored the importance of intellectual prowess in the sport.
