Lux presents Hollywood. Lieber Brothers Co. The makers of luxury toilet soap brings you the Lux Radio Theater. Starring Edmund o' Brien and Walter Brennan in the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. Irving Cummings.
Announcer / Radio Host
Greetings from Hollywood. Ladies and gentlemen. Tonight we bring you another of our 20 greats. The exciting, never ending drama of man's greed for gold. It's that fine Warner Brothers picture, the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. And as our stars, one of this year's nominees for the Academy Award for best supporting actor, Edmund o' Brien won. Of the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Starring Edmund o' Brien as Dobbs and Walter Brennan as. How.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
The first time I come up with them was in Campico. That's a seaport. Campico, northeast Mexico. I was having me a beer near the docks when they come in. It was a hot Sunday afternoon.
Dobbs
You a fellow American?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
That's right, mister. What do you want?
Dobbs
I want to know about a guy named McCormick. Ever hear of him?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
McCormick? McCormick. Well, is he in the oil business?
Sailor / Minor Character
Yeah.
Curtin
You seen him lately?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, if I was you gentlemen, I'd run clear of McCormick. Hires a crew to work in the oil fields. Man never pays off. He's slick like oil.
Dobbs
Yeah, yeah, that's right.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You don't mean to tell me he's hooked? Two smart fellow Americans like you?
Dobbs
That's right, Pop. Six weeks in the oil fields, 120 in the shade. Only I ain't through with Mr. McCormick. Fred C. Dobbs is going to get his wages, see?
Howard
Come on, Dobbs, let's have a beer.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I see him again that night. They come wandering in the flop house. 50 cent tavels for a bid. Me, I'm sitting up talking to a couple of sailors. Subject to conversation is gold.
Howard
You mean there's gold here in Mexico,
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
not 10 days away from this very spot. Whole mountain of gold waiting for the right guy to come along, discover a treasure, and then tickle it till she lets him have it. Now you tell me something, mister. Why is gold worth some 20 bucks an ounce?
Howard
I don't know, Pop.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Because it's scarce, I guess.
Local / Indian Guide
Look.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Thousand men say go searching for gold. After six months, one of them's lucky.
Howard
One out of a thousand.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
His fine represents not only his labor, but that of 999 others to boot. Announce the gold mystery is worth what it is. Because of the human labor and suffering that went into the getting of it.
Howard
I never thought of it just like that.
Curtain
Yeah.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
When you start out, you tell yourself you'll be satisfied with 25,000 smackers of it. And after months of sweating yourself dizzy and growing short on provisions and finding nothing, you finally come down to 15,000. Then 10 when you say, Lord, let me just have $5,000 worth. And I'll never ask for anything more the rest of my life.
Dobbs
$5,000 is still a lot of dough.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, but if you make a real strike, you couldn't be dragged away from it. Not even the threat of a miserable death would keep you from trying to add 10,000 more.
Curtain
Get 10.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You want 25? 25.
Howard
You want to get 50?
Curtain
50. 100.
Dobbs
Wouldn't be that way with me.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, hello, mister. You didn't find McCormick, huh?
Dobbs
I'll find him. But about gold, I swear, it wouldn't be that way with me. I take only what I set out to get.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I've dug gold all over the world. I know what gold does to a man.
Curtin
You talk as if you once struck it rich. How about it, Pop?
Dobbs
Yeah. What are you doing in here, Pop? Or down and outer?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
That's gold, mister. Never knew a prospector yet that died rich. Sure, I'm a gnawed old bone now. But don't you guys think the spirit's gone. I'm all set to shoulder picking a shovel anytime anybody's willing to share expenses.
Dobbs
Oh, I bet you are.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Of course, going alone is the best way. But you gotta have a stomach for loneliness. And then, on the other hand, going with a partner or two is dangerous. Murder's always lurking about. Partners accusing each other of all sorts of madness.
Dobbs
Why should finding gold make a man any different? He's the right kind of man to start with. Gold ain't gonna change him.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You ever tried running down, mister? Ever tried prospecting?
Dobbs
No. No, I ain't.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You didn't have to answer that question. I knew the answer.
Dobbs
You know it all pop. I think I'll go to bed. Dream about piles of gold growing bigger and bigger and bigger.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
A week later, I see him again. Dobbs and Curtain, all lumps and bloodied up, looking for me. They was something to tell me. They take me to a cantina and put a bottle of beer under my nose.
Dobbs
We found the comic possum.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
From the looks of you, you found a peck of trouble, too.
Curtin
But we got our wages, every last penny of it.
Dobbs
And we've been thinking, why not try digging gold for a change? Well, it ain't any riskier than waiting around here for a break. And this is a country where the nuggets of gold are just crying for you to take them out of the ground.
Howard
Well, that's what you said the other night, wasn't it?
Curtain
Yeah.
Howard
What's so funny?
Curtin
Living out in the open is cheaper than living in town. Our money lasts longer.
Howard
Sure it would.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Sure, you have to have equipment. You know how much that'd cost?
Dobbs
Well, we. We figured we'd ask you. We ain't denying anything. When you come right down to it, we don't know too much about prospecting. If you wasn't so old.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, Maybe I'd go with you. Is that what's on your mind? Maybe you'd take me along, huh?
Howard
Well, would you?
Dobbs
Would you go?
Howard
Of course I'll go.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Anytime, any day.
Curtain
Out for gold.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Always at your service. Well, I got 200American bucks ready.
Curtain
Cash.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
How much dough you guys got to put in?
Dobbs
150 bucks. Curtain here has got the same total of 500, eh?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Ain't hardly enough to buy tools, weapons and essentials.
Producer / Ken
Well, what do we need guns for?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, for one thing, meat. For another thing, bandits. Bandit country's where we be going. We ought to have 600 bucks between us anyways.
Dobbs
That much, huh?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You can't dig up any more, huh?
Bandit / Minor Character
Not a red center. Give me my money. Senor. Give me my money.
Dobbs
Get away from me, will you?
Bandit / Minor Character
Senor, you don't call for him.
Howard
You'll comprehend a glass full of beer
Dobbs
right in your kisser if you don't leave me alone. I tell you, I don't want any lottery tickets. And I'll bait it. Go on.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Lottery tickets? Why, that's for gambling, men.
Bandit / Minor Character
It's always whoever wins the lot. Lucky number gives the seller a present of 10%.
Dobbs
Wait a minute. What are you talking about?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Hey, Dobbs, he's trying to tell you he sold you a winning ticket.
Bandit / Minor Character
Here, look. The least of all the winning numbers. You buy ticket for five Cent hours, remember? Three weeks ago.
Dobbs
Yeah, yeah, I remember. What about it?
Bandit / Minor Character
You win, senor, you win.
Dobbs
Give me that paper.
Curtain
Oh, brother, just look at that fat,
Howard
rich printed number, huh?
Bandit / Minor Character
You got the ticket?
Howard
Here, I got the ticket. Welcome sweet little smackaroos. Here ya son. Here's a present for you with my blessing.
Bandit / Minor Character
Go to the lobby office. Senior, get the one.
Curtain
Hey, congratulations.
Howard
Congratulations yourselves. You stand a profit out of this,
Dobbs
same as I do.
Howard
Well, how do you figure that?
Dobbs
Well, didn't he just say we needed 600 bucks?
Howard
Well, look, that's.
Dobbs
That's what we got now, ain't it?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yes, just like that. Stroke of faith.
Howard
But how.
Curtin
How come you're putting up for me again?
Howard
Because this is an all or nothing proposition.
Dobbs
If we make a fine, we'll be
Howard
lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills.
Dobbs
If we don't, the difference between what you put up and what I put up ain't enough to keep me from
Howard
being right back where I was this afternoon. Put it there, pard. Thanks, Dobbs.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, gentlemen, here's what we'll do. We'll take a train to Perla. That's a little town for the Sierra Madre Mountains. That's where we'll buy our burros and get away from the railroad. Now, there's no use looking for gold anywheres near a railroad. We gotta go away where there's no trails at all, just bandits.
Dobbs
Sounds okay to me.
Howard
Okay, partner?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Sure, sure. We gotta go where no surveyor or anybody who knows anything about prospectin's ever been before. Well, drink up, gentlemen. Then we'll buy us a map and some railroad tickets. We bought about half our gear there and changed people, then took the train for puller. About 50 miles from pillar, out in the desert, there was a big boulder on the tracks. Bandits trying to raid the train. Look, they're retreating.
Howard
They're riding off.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Save your bullets, Mr.
Curtain
Dodge.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You're too far off now.
Howard
I got three of them. Credit me with three.
Dobbs
How many did you get?
Curtin
A couple there, I guess.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Bandits? Yeah, I guess they were expected. That's how come so many federal soldiers riding this train.
Curtin
That bandit rode right up to the train.
Howard
The one with the gold hat.
Dobbs
Yeah. I had my sights on as nice as you please, but the train gave a jolt and I missed them.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, you boys cooled off enough. Look at this map.
Dobbs
Oh, yeah, sure, sure.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
It ain't much of a map. Don't properly show whether it's mountain or desert. That shows the makers of the map didn't know theirselves. And that's Good. What are you doing, Dobbs?
Dobbs
Reloading. Can't tell if them bandits may come back.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, yeah, yeah, that's right. Wake me up when the shooting starts.

He's proven he's got a right to sell us them burrs. They all got the same brand. Seal it, Ray.
Local / Indian Guide
I will load your supplies on the borough, senor.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Thanks, son. Thanks.
Local / Indian Guide
My father is much worried for you, senor.
Dobbs
Worried? What's he worried for?
Curtin
Yeah, we paid him, didn't we?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
He says we're going into very wild country. Jungles and in high mountains. Tigers so big and strong they can climb a tree with a bow in the mouth. Tigers? Here? Ah, they're more like leopards, I guess. Well, I'm glad to hear such tall chs, gentlemen. That means mighty few outsiders ever set foot up there.
Dobbs
Well, let's get going then.
Howard
Come on, kids, shake it up. Get them burrows loaded.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Hey, Curtin, take it easy, will ya?
Dobbs
Oh, there's a mountain climb and it
Howard
ain't like a walk around the block.
Curtin
Yeah, I'm. I'm dead. Come on, let's get a while.
Dobbs
There is gold in these mountains. How long would it have been there? Millions and millions of years, wouldn't it? What's our hurry? A couple of days more or less ain't gonna matter.
Curtin
Look at that old man.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Way ahead of us up there, you
Curtin
and me scared we'd have to pack him on our backs.
Dobbs
Yeah, that was when I took him for an ordinary human being.
Curtin
He's part goat, you know, if I'd have Known what prospecting meant, I'd have stayed in Tampico. Waited for another job to turn up.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Curtains.
Howard
Curtain.
Curtain
Look. Look.
Dobbs
What's the matter?
Howard
These rocks.
Curtain
Look.
Howard
Those little veins running through the rocks, look at them. Glitter yellow, too. Like gold. Gold?
Curtain
We've been sitting on a gold mine.
Howard
That's a water bag. Wash some of that dirt off.
Curtain
Howard. Howard, come back. Come back. We found something. We found something.
Howard
Here. Here's the water. There's a vein all over the rock.
Curtain
We struck it.
Howard
Curtain, look. Look over there.
Curtain
It's in all the rocks.
Howard
Just like he said.
Curtain
It's a bonanza.
Bandit / Minor Character
Howard, look. Look at the rock.
Curtain
They're full of gold. Veins of gold.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Now, what you want to show me, gentlemen? This stuff wouldn't pay a dinner for Carlo.
Howard
It ain't gold, These pyrite.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Fool's gold. Oh, of course, there's not that. There's not plenty of the real stuff hereabouts. We've walked over it four or five times already.
Howard
You mean we've been patching it up?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Why, there ain't enough of it. Not enough gold to pay us a good day's wages. Well, you figured to sit here or eat?
Dobbs
Come on, Kurt, let's go.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Next time you fellas strike at ridge, holler for me first before you start splashing the water around. Water is precious. Sometimes it can be more precious than gold. It was fine country. Inspiring. Didn't see a soul. Just the beast of the jungle. And birds. I felt good. 10 years younger. Better than either of them. Wore them down to just plain gristle. Come night, they just lay on the ground, puffing and groaning. Too dogged out to sit up and eat the beans.
Dobbs
I can't move. Oh, I just want to lie here.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Ain't you going to have some beans? Going through some mighty rough country tomorrow. You better have some beans.
Dobbs
Shut up, pot. Go on, eat them. Just let us alone.
Curtin
That wind, it's blowing up awful cold.
Announcer / Radio Host
Getting cold.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Is it getting cold? Yeah. Feels like a norther. Yeah, when they blow hard, they set that desert country below us right on its hind legs. You know, we're lucky to be where we are. Lucky, huh? Reckon there's only a couple of more days of this heavy stuff. Pretty soon we'll be leveling off. Yeah, pretty soon now.
Dobbs
Howard. Howard, come here. A couple of more days, you said. That was three nights ago. Yeah.
Curtin
We've really had enough. Howard, Dobbs and me, we just want to give up.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Give up, huh?
Dobbs
Yeah. Leave the whole outfit right here back to civilization.
Curtain
What's that? You say, go back. Go back.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
We'll kill my old grandmother. I got two very elegant bedfellows that
Curtain
kick at the first gust of wind and hide in the closet when the thunder rumbles.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
My, my, my.
Curtain
What great prospect.
Howard
Lay off us.
Curtain
How Two shoe clerks is what you are.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Two shoe clerks read in a magazine about prospecting for gold in the land of the midnight sun.
Howard
Shut your traps. Shut up or I'll smash your head flat.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Go ahead. Pick up that rock and throw it. If you did, you'd never leave this wilderness alive. Without me, you two would die here miserable in a rat.
Curtin
Leave him alone, Dobbs. Can't you see the old man's nuts?
Bandit / Minor Character
Nuts?
Curtain
Nuts, am I?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Let me tell you something, my two fine bedfellas.
Curtain
You're so dumb, there's nothing to compare you with. You're dumber than the dumbest jackass. You're so dumb, you don't even see the riches you're treading on with your own feet. Look at me. I'm dancing on it. Doing a dig on a mountain of gold.
Howard
What are you talking about?
Curtain
You mean this is it? There's gold here? What you expect to see nuggets of molten gold? Tourists here come from someplace further up. Up there. See? That's where we gotta go. Up there.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Only I'm going alone because my two
Curtain
courageous companions have agreed between themselves. Desert to desert and go back. Well, you was dead.
Dobbs
I'll take one more day of it. What do you say, Kurt?
Curtin
Well, one more day won't kill us. Changed your mind, huh?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, thank you, my two fine feathered friends. You move me to tears with your
Curtain
face and trust in me. One more day, huh? Well, then you can follow my trail because I'm gonna be camping up there. Ton.
Dobbs
This is it, Howard.
Howard
Yeah, this is stuff right here.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
That's right.
Dobbs
Gold. It sure don't look like I thought it would.
Howard
Well, that's just sand.
James Cody
That's just sand?
Dobbs
Yeah, it's just like plain sand. It don't glitter.
Howard
I thought it would glitter.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, it'll glitter when it's refined, but that's another guy's job. You got to know how to recognize it. You got to know how to tickle her so she'll come out too. It's mighty rich, this sand. This will pay good.
Dobbs
How good?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, about 20 ounces to the ton.
Curtin
That's some $20 an ounce.
Dobbs
How many tons can we handle in a week?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
It depends on how hard we work. Well, we better pitch camp down the mountain there a bit.
Dobbs
Why do that? When the gold is here.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, in case anybody happens by bandits or soldiers chasing bandits or Injuns, in case that happens, we just tell them we're hunters, see?
Howard
Hunters.
Curtin
Wouldn't it just be easier to file a claim?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Easy, maybe, but not so profitable. Wouldn't be no time till an emissary from one of them big mining companies would be right up here with a paper in his hand showing we had no right to be here. Well, how does it feel to be men of property?
Dobbs
I'm sorry about the fuss we kicked up, Pop. I guess we were pretty dumb.
Curtin
Yeah, but we made it, huh?
James Cody
We're here,
Curtin
man the property.
Howard
What do you know?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Everything's going to be all right from now on, huh?
Dobbs
Sure it is. Why not?
Howard
Why not, huh? Why not?
Curtain
We'll find out, won't we, Dubsy?
Howard
Yes, sir. We'll find out.
Producer / Ken
In a moment, we'll continue with Act 2 of the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Now for our Hollywood Reporter, Francis Scully.
Francis Scully
Well, with all the talk going around about George Pal's new Technicolor production, Conquest of Space, I stopped over at Paramount to see it.
Producer / Ken
I hear a lot of the action in it takes place on a space station way above the earth.
Francis Scully
1100 miles above the Earth. Can. The men stationed there have been commissioned to build a spaceship for a flight to the moon. Then their orders are changed and they end up on Mars.
Producer / Ken
Who's in the cast, Francis? Mostly newcomers, aren't they?
Francis Scully
Some mighty promising newcomers, Ken. Walter Brooks, Eric Fleming, Phil Foster, Georgiana Johnson and Joan Shawley.
Producer / Ken
George Powell's pictures are always great. And I'm sure Conquest of Space is no exception.
Francis Scully
Well, I'm sure everyone will be thrilled by the spectacular outer space scenes. I certainly was.
Producer / Ken
Say, Frances, I hope we have a luxe girl among those promising newcomers you spoke of.
Francis Scully
That we do, Ken. Joan Shawley has a luxe complexion that would do the biggest star proud. She's a picture in Technicolor.
Producer / Ken
That's what I like to hear. And it's something for you and our audience to think about. Why does an ambitious young actress like Joan Shawl put her faith in luxe toilet soap? The answer is she's found out from other girls just as particular about complexion care as she is that there's no other beauty soap quite like Lux. Remember, 9 out of 10 Hollywood stars use Lux, and that's reason enough for any woman to do the same. So make the star's favorite soap your soap too. You can, because you don't have to be a movie star. To have a movie star complexion. That's the beauty of Lux. It can give you and you and you fresher, lovelier skin. And Lieber Brothers unconditionally guarantees it.

Act two of the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Starring Edmund O' Brien as Dobbs and Walter Brennan as.
Producer / Ken
How.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
For a month I guess we didn't mine a grain of ore. There were things to do first. Such as setting up camp corrals for the burrows and the sluice ways off in the creek to wash out the gold. Finally the time come when we weighed up our first take of the treasure.
Curtin
How much, Howard?
Howard
How much figure we got there?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, I'd say about $5,000 worth of rigging.
Dobbs
Not bad. When do we start dividing it up?
Curtin
Well, why divided now? When the time comes, we're all going back together, aren't we?
Dobbs
I'm for dividing as we go along. Make. Make each guy responsible for his own good.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, I'd just soon have it that way myself. I haven't liked the responsibility of guarding your treasure any too well.
Dobbs
Who asked you? Two pals?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
That's right. You never did ask me. Only I thought I was the most trustworthy of the three.
Producer / Ken
You?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I said the most trustworthy as far as being the most honest.
Dobbs
Well, no one can say I don't get it.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
All right. Suppose you was charged with taking care of the goods One day I'm deep in the brush and let's say Curtain here is on his way to the village to get provisions. That'd be your big chance to pack up and leave us in the cold, wouldn't it?
Dobbs
Only a guy that's a thief at heart would think me likely to pull a stunt like that.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, right now it wouldn't be worth your while, of course, but when the pile's grown, well, think of such things you will.
Sailor / Minor Character
Yeah.
Curtin
How about yourself?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I'm not quickening my feet any longer. You fellas are a lot tougher than when you started out, too. Well, you'd have me strung up in no time. That's why I think I'm the most trustworthy.
Curtin
Well, looking at it that way, I guess you're right. But no, let's do like Dobbs says. Divide the proceeds every night.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, that's well by me, gentlemen. And then each of us will hide his share of the treasure from the other two, huh?
Dobbs
Well, why not?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
And having done so, he'll have to be forever on the watch that his hiding place is not discovered.
Howard
What a dirty, filthy.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, no, no, not dirty. Not dirty, baby. Only I know what kind of ideas even supposedly decent people get when gold's at stake. All right, Curtin, hand me them weighing scales. And here she goes, boys, three ways.
Curtin
Venison stew.
Howard
That sure tastes good, Pop.
Curtin
Where's Dobbs?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, he ate the fool.
Sailor / Minor Character
Alone?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah.
Curtin
Say, you tell me something, Bob. What? What you gonna do with all your hard earned money?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I reckon I'll settle down some quiet place. Get me a little business, hardware, grocery store. Spend a better part of my time reading comic strips and adventure stories. One thing for sure, I'm not going to go prospecting no more.
Dobbs
What's all that about?
Curtin
Well, just John Dobbsy telling each other what we'll do when we get back.
Howard
Me, I got it all figured. First off, I'm going to get a
Dobbs
brand new set of duds, dozen of everything.
Howard
Then I'm going to a swell cafe
Dobbs
and order everything on the bill of fare.
Howard
And if it ain't just right, and
Dobbs
even if it is, I'm gonna ball
Howard
out the manager and make him take it all back.
Curtin
What's next on the program?
Dobbs
Well, what would be.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You know what? We ought to put some kind of a limit on the take here.
Curtin
What kind of limit?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, say, $25,000 for each man.
Dobbs
25,000. Small potatoes. 50 anyway.
Howard
75 would be more like it. I'm young, I need dough and plenty of it.
Curtin
No use making hogs of ourselves.
Dobbs
Hog, am I Maybe you don't know
Howard
it, but I'd be within my rights
Dobbs
if I demanded half again as much as you get.
Howard
How come? I put up the lion's share of the cash, didn't I?
Dobbs
So you did, Dobsy, but.
Curtin
Well, I always meant to pay you back.
Howard
In any civilized place, the biggest investor
Dobbs
gets the biggest return, don't he?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
There's one thing in favor of the wild.
Dobbs
It's not that I intend to demand it, but I'd be within my rights if I did.
Howard
The next time you go calling me a hog, just remember what I could
Dobbs
have done if I wanted to.
Howard
Funny, ain't it, Pop? Yeah, real funny.
Dobbs
Catch me sleeping, huh? I'm not that dumb. Say, them guys try to put anything over on me, it'll be be a costly one for both of them. You know what's good for you? You don't monkey around with Fred C. Dobbs.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
What you say, Dobbs, Huh?
Dobbs
Nothing.
Curtain
Better look out.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Bad sign when a fella starts talking to himself.
Dobbs
Yeah, who else am I going to talk to? Certainly not to you or Curtin.
Howard
I don't get the idea you two are putting over anything on me.
Dobbs
I know what your game is.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, you know more than I do.
Howard
Why am I elected to go to the village tomorrow? Why me instead of you?
Dobbs
A curtain time, I'd be gone.
Howard
Give you plenty of chance to discover where I hid my goods, wouldn't it?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, now, you got any fear along them lines, why don't you take the goods with you?
Howard
And run the risk of having them taken from me by bandits?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
They kid you anyway, Dobbsy, just for the sport of it.
Howard
Oh, so that's it. You're hoping bandits will get me. That'd save you two a lot of trouble, wouldn't it?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
All right, Dobbs, forget about it.
Howard
I ain't going to the village, see? And you can go back and tell that to Curtin.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Okay, partner, I'll tell him. So Curtin went down to the village for provisions. He was all stood up coming back. There were soldiers in the village chasing bandits. And that wasn't all either. He met up with an American fellow
Curtin
named Cody and he kept pumping me.
Howard
Followed me right into that store.
Curtin
Wanted to know what I was doing here.
Howard
What'd you tell him? Well, I. I said that I was a hunter. I said I was a professional hunter. Kept asking me did I see anything up here that looked like gold.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
You shook him off. Couldn't you get rid of him?
Curtain
Huh?
Curtin
I couldn't.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
No.
Curtin
He followed me.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Are you sure.
Curtain
He traded.
Curtin
Yes, I'm sure.
Dobbs
What makes you so positive?
Howard
Because every time.
Curtin
Because if you turn around, you can see for yourself.
Dobbs
There he is.
James Cody
Hello.
Dobbs
All right, you walk over here to the fire.
James Cody
I. I guess I'm not wanted, huh? And I just couldn't resist the chance to sit around and jaw with an American.
Dobbs
Don't make any mistake, mister. We got no use for you. We're full up. No vacancies back where you came from. Take our blessing with you. Thanks.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
If you're hungry, mister, go on, help yourself.
Dobbs
Yeah, go ahead. Tonight, you're our guest.
Producer / Ken
See?
Dobbs
Tomorrow morning. Look out. No trespassing. Beware of the dogs. Get it? I. I got a few hides while you were gone, Curtin. Five foxes and a tiger.
Producer / Ken
Oh.
Curtin
How are the skin?
Dobbs
Pretty good.
James Cody
Excuse me for butting in, but there's no wild game around here worth going after.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, you're right, mister. That's why we've made up our minds to clear out.
James Cody
That might be pretty good ground for something else.
Curtin
I told you in the village, there's no gold around here.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Look, my boy, if there'd been one single ounce of it, I'd have smelled it, believe me.
James Cody
Oh, you're not as smart as you appear to be.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Gold, huh? You know, that gives me an id. Guess I'll sleep on it. Gentlemen.
Curtin
Yeah, me too. I'll see. I'll see you in the morning, Cody.
Dobbs
Sorry, there's no room in our tent. If you want to, you can roll up here by the fire.
James Cody
Ah, that's fine.
Dobbs
Thanks.
Howard
Thanks a lot.
Curtin
I can't figure him out. Is he wise to us or not?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Look, you two guys go to sleep. I'll be watchdog for a couple hours, and you and Dobbs can take your turns.
Dobbs
You got a gun handy?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Right here.
Dobbs
Okay.
James Cody
Haven't got much sleep last night.
Producer / Ken
That's your friend.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
That's a fact.
Local / Indian Guide
We didn't.
Dobbs
Look, why don't we lay our cards
James Cody
on the table right now, huh? Now, you found gold here. I know that. And because I know it, you're gonna have to do one of three things.
Dobbs
Look who's telling us what we gotta do.
James Cody
One of three things. Kill me, run me off or take me in as a partner. Partner?
Dobbs
Why?
James Cody
Now, let's consider the first. If you start killing people, just how
Dobbs
far are you prepared to go with it?
James Cody
Another guy may come along tomorrow, you know.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, ain't much we stop at, mister, to protect your interests.
James Cody
Well, I only say that killing me isn't the answer. Now, as for choice number Two, you run me off and I might very well inform on you. 25% of your gold is the reward I get.
Curtin
That's a pretty strong argument in favor of killing you.
James Cody
I don't deny that. But you take me in as a partner and you don't lose anything. I'm not asking for a share of what you've made so far, only in the province to come. Why don't you think it over? I'll be looking after my burro.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, Howard, sending them away is out of the question.
Dobbs
Fred C. Dobbs ain't a guy likes being taken advantage of. We ain't got no real choice at all. Bump him off.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, but what do we gain by killing him? I don't mind being taken some advantage of as long as it ain't money out of my pocket.
Dobbs
And whoever else happens along, they're to be invited in, too. Come one, come.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
All right, you get a point there, Dubs. No question about it. But to kill a man?
Dobbs
Why, what's the matter? Ain't you up to it?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Sure I'm up to it. Let the majority decide. What do you say? Curtain for again?
Dobbs
Well, for or against?
Curtin
4.
Dobbs
Okay, we'll make it short and sweet for him. Stand right where you are, Cody.
James Cody
Gun. You're going to shoot me, huh?
Dobbs
Yeah, you convinced us.
James Cody
Before you start shooting, you better take a look down there in the valley. There's some men coming on horses.
Dobbs
So that's your stinking game. I knew you as an informer.
Howard
I knew it all the time.
James Cody
You're wrong, brother. This means all our funerals.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
They're bandaged, gentlemen. About a dozen of them.
James Cody
Somebody at the village must have told him about the American hunter up here.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, we better start thinking about a way to defend ourselves. We could try hiding in the rocks, but then we'd lose our birds and the whole outfit. The best thing for us to do, I'd say, is to make a fight of it.
James Cody
Well, is it you3 against them or us4?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
For now, I guess it's.

Dobbs
Yeah, we'll settle your case later.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
If you're alive, he's got something there, Dobsy.
Curtain
That's right.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
If we're alive. The bandits turn out to be Gold Hat and his boys. Same crowd that held up the train on our way to Perla. They spotted us all right. Started pouring it onto us too. Then all at once, they turned and took off. Didn't make sense. Then we saw why. Far down the mountain, hot on that trail, was maybe 50 soldiers.
Announcer / Radio Host
Federals.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
We just stood there watching them shoot it out half a mile below us.
Curtain
Look at them Federals dig em tied. Chilling up and swallowing.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Better stay covered, Dobbsy. If them soldiers start spreading out, we may have company after all.
Local / Indian Guide
Yeah.
Announcer / Radio Host
Yeah.
Howard
Get down, Turkey. Hey, come here.
Curtin
You guys like the bandits settled our problems.
Howard
Cody's dead.
Dobbs
What do you mean he's dead?
James Cody
Take a look.
Dobbs
Bullet right through his neck.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I wonder who he was. Maybe we better go through his pockets, huh? Maybe he's got both somewhere.
Curtin
Here's his wallet, Pop. James Cody, Dallas, Texas.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
And a picture. Girl. Little kid. Guess she's his wife, huh?
Dobbs
Well, I guess we better dig a hole for him. Funny how it's all worked out. We didn't have to shoot them after all.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Gentlemen, were you to ask me, I'd say it's time we considered leaving this mountain.
Dobbs
How much gold do you figure we got?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, upwards of 35,000 apiece. And I'll tell you, we ought to be plenty thankful.
Dobbs
All right, let's call it quits then. Sooner the better.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
It'll take another week to put the mountain back into shape. The what?
Dobbs
To the mountain.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
We wounded this mountain. It's our duty to close her wounds. The least we can do for all the wealth she's given us. If you guys don't want to help me, then I'll do it myself.
Curtin
You know, you talk about a mountain like it was a real woman.
Howard
You know a lot better to me
Dobbs
than any woman I ever know.
Howard
Keep your shirt on, old timer.
Dobbs
Sure, I'll help you.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Six days later, we loaded the gold on the burrows and little canvas bags and started down late that afternoon. Pushing through the brush, we walked straight into a bunch of Injuns. They were peaceful and friendly. They wanted help.
Dobbs
What do you mean, help? What kind of help?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
They've been heading for Durango. Seems some little boy in their village fell into the river. They fished him out, but he won't come to. He ain't dead, they say he just won't come to.
Dobbs
Well, that's tough.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Really want me to go back to that village with them? Ain't very fair. Maybe I can do something.
Dobbs
Why?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, were I to refuse them, they'd make me go. I'll be back soon. Before morning, probably.
Dobbs
And have you not?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, leaving my birds with you. Look after me good. Shall I get back?
Howard
It's okay, Bob. We'll wait for you here.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Look, it's no use augifying. I'm sorry, gentlemen. I gotta go back again to the village.
Howard
But you just said you fixed the kid.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Fixing the kid was simple. Artificial respiration and a few Boy Scout tricks. You see, I got a visit with them now. Their gods will be angry if they don't show their gratitude to me.
Howard
Tell them to forget it.
Dobbs
They don't always a thing.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I tried that. Just made a man.
Howard
I'll handle it. Hey, Savvy?
Curtain
Hungry? No. Pod a quid arm. No. Wait a minute.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Wait a minute. You touch a gun, we'll be scalping in a half an hour.
Howard
What's he saying now?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
He says it don't make any difference about you guys, but I got to go back with him.
Dobbs
Oh, it's like that, huh? They just want you.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, it looks like it.
Dobbs
Well, go on, then.
Howard
Go meet in Durango.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, what about my goods?
Curtin
Just take him with you.
Dobbs
If they found out, they might forget
Howard
he was their honored guest and bump them off, huh, Pop?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
What'll I do? Dump it here on the ground?
Curtin
No, we. We'll take him with us if you want us to.
Dobbs
Well, any better ideas, Pop?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Reckon that's about the only solution.
Dobbs
I bet you you'll remember this the next time you try to do a Good deed.
Howard
Don't worry, Pop.
Dobbs
Good luck to you.
Howard
Yeah, and look out for those Indian dames. One of them squaws might marry you.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Maybe you might do that. Pick me out a good looking squaw and marry it. You know, easy to dress, feed and entertain. Well, so long, partners. See you in Durango. And so I left him and went back with the engines. No choice. I had to go behind me in keeping the curtain. And Dubs was my share of the treasure. $35,000.
Dobbs
I'm stopping here for the night.
Howard
You hear me, Curtin? I'm stopping here early yet.
Curtin
We could make four or five miles more before dark.
Dobbs
Go on then. But take his burros with you. They ain't my responsibility.
Howard
Seeing Twan Hager is nothing but trouble for two days.
Dobbs
Trying off trails, smashing their packs against the rocks. He knew what he was doing when he turned them over to us.
Curtin
So you're staying here for the night, Em?
Dobbs
You heard me.
Howard
Well, if you can't go any further. Who says I can't? Don't make me laugh. I can go four times as far as a mug like you. But I don't wanna. I could if I wanna, but I don't wanna see mud.
Curtin
What's the use of hollering, Dobbsy? Okay, we'll.
Dobbs
How far do you suppose the railroad is from here?
Curtin
It's hard to say. Reach the high pass in two days more, get fresh water. After that, I don't know. Hey, what's the joke, Dobson?
Howard
I was just thinking what a foment play that old jackass made when he
Dobbs
put all his goods in our keepers. He figured he'd let us do his sweating for him. Did he? Well, we'll show him.
Curtin
Show him what?
Dobbs
Can't you see? It's all ours now. We don't go back to Durango at all. Steal his goods. Yeah, we take his goods and go north. Leave the old jackass flat.
Curtin
Oh, now, look, you don't. You don't really mean that.
Dobbs
Fred C. Dobbs don't say nothing he don't mean.
Curtin
As long as I can do anything about it. You won't take a single grain of that old man's good.
Howard
Oh, you want to take it all for yourself, huh? Cut me out. You are out of your head. I'm on the level with the old
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
man, same as I do with you.
Howard
Sure, for a long time I've had my suspicions about you and now I know I've been right. What suspicion? You're going to bump me off, bury me out here in the bush like a dog you are. Crazy dog. And you not only have the old man's goods, but mine in a bargain. You'll have yourself a big laugh, won't you? Thinking how dumb the old man and I were.
Dobbs
Put your hands up.
Howard
Curtain D. Was I right or was I right? Go on, stand up. Get on your feet and take it
James Cody
like a man trying to put one
Howard
over on Fred's feet. Pull a gun on me, huh? Put a gun on me. Only now I get the gun. Now you listen to me.
James Cody
Go on. Go on.
Howard
Pull a bobby.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Look, you're all wrong.
Curtin
I. I never intended to rob you.
Dobbs
You really mean that?
Howard
Then give me back my look.
Curtin
Look, wouldn't it be better the way things are, to split up? I mean, right now, tonight?
Dobbs
Oh, that would suit you fine, wouldn't it?
Howard
So you could fall on me from behind, shoot me in the back. All right, then. I'll go first. And wait for me on the trail, huh? Ambush me. If I meant to kill you, why
Curtin
wouldn't I do it right here?
Howard
Cause you're yeller.
Dobbs
You haven't got nerve to pull the
Howard
trigger when I'm looking you straight in the eyes.
Dobbs
You really believe that, don't you?
Howard
Joke. Full of jokes.
Curtin
All right, we won't separate. We'll just go on together. And every day you'll take the trail right ahead of me. And every night I'm gonna tie you up.
Dobbs
Oh, I'll tell you what, Curtin. I'll make you a little bet.
Howard
3 times 35 is 105. I'll bet you $105,000 you go to
Dobbs
sleep before I do. How long can you go without sleeping? Curtains? Two days? Three?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Four?
Howard
Whatever it is, I can go longer.
Producer / Ken
See?
Dobbs
And the day you fall down on the trail, that's the day Fred C.
Howard
Dobbs wins his bet. $105,000,
Dobbs
just like I said. Curtin couldn't take it, could you?
Howard
Fell asleep, didn't you? Who wins the bet? Who wins the bet?
Curtin
The old man catch up with you?
Howard
I got an answer for that one too. I'll tell him you tied me to a tree.
Dobbs
That you stole all the goods.
Howard
Yours, mine and his. So he'll be looking for you, Curtin. Not for me.
Dobbs
A fat chance. He's got a find in you. Go along, partner.
Producer / Ken
In a moment. Act three of the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Say, ladies, wouldn't you like to see your white clothes come out whiter and whiter every time you wash them? Of course you would. And that's exactly what happens every time you use that remarkable new detergent Rinse o Blue. In fact, Lever Brothers unconditionally guarantees it. You see, new Rinso Blue washes white clothes whiter and colors brighter because it blues as it washes right in your washing machine. Now, obviously, if your present detergent doesn't blue as it washes, it's only doing half the job. So it's a good idea to switch to remarkable new Rinso Blue right away. You'll be mighty enthusiastic about the grand job new Rinso Blue does on your dishes and glasses, too. It gets them sparkling clean without wiping. What's more, it's so mild, so gentle on your hands. So, ladies, be sure to put new Rinso Blue detergent on your shopping list for tomorrow. Remember, new Rinso Blue washes whiter because it blues as it washes. We pause now for station identification. Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, I'd left Dobbs and Curtin on the trail with all my goods and gone to the village of the Injuns. They couldn't do enough for me. Food, drink, and pretty little girls to brush the flies off of me. Yes, sir, old man Howard was a regular mole girl, a real potentate. Then some of their hunters came in from the brush. They were carrying a man. It was Clinton with two bullet holes in him.
Howard
Dobs did it.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Howard Dobsted it. Made off with that goods, huh?
Howard
How could he be such a bad shot? He left me there. Thought I was there.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Take it easy, son. You're talking too much.
Curtin
Don't you worry about me.
Dobbs
I'll pull out of this, if only
Howard
to get that guy.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Well, I reckon we can't blame Dodge too much.
Curtin
What do you mean?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Dobbs ain't a real killer, as killers go. The big mistake was leaving you two fellas alone out there in the wilderness. That was a mighty big temptation, partner, believe me.
Curtin
Dobbs shot me down in cold blood. He shot me a second time just to make sure.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, a man goes crazy with that much wealth in his reach. Maybe if I'd have been young, been out there with either one of you, and I might have been tempted, too. Well, Captain, nothing to do but sit out after him.
Curtin
Yeah, a couple of days now, I'll be okay.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, but not for chasing down a mountainside.
Curtin
Well, the Indians there, they could loan us horses.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
And that's why I figure I'll catch Dobbs. He'll go as fast and as far as a man can, but he's alone with all them burros and on foot.
Curtin
I'm going with you.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Give me 10 days, two weeks, I'll come back for you.
Curtin
I'm going with you.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Look at you. You're weak as a newborn kitten.
Curtin
Still going?
Sailor / Minor Character
Yeah.
Dobbs
Reckon you're going.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Some of the Injuns came with us. As we rode north, I tried to figure out what I'd do as I in Dobbs boots, I knew what I'd do. I'd try to make time. I'd sacrifice anything for time. Sleep, rations, even water.
Curtin
What'd they find?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Another dead bird. Dobbs is really pushing him. That's the third bird he's killed off.
Curtin
I don't like this wind that's blowing like this.
Howard
Cover up his trail.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, it might blow like this for days.
Howard
We're not gonna stop, are we? Dobbs won't stop.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Ah, we'll keep going.
Shannon Maldonado
He.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
He'll be running out of water soon.
James Cody
We were going to fill up at the high pass.
Howard
Yeah.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Only he went north. My friends here say the water's mighty scarce in the north. They say something else, too. Curtin.
Curtin
Yeah.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Gold hat and a couple of his pals escaped the federals. They're on foot. They passed here just about a day before.
Curtain
Dobbs,
Sailor / Minor Character
There is a mirror. Six as a model. One man and six burros trying to squeeze water out of the bottle. Six burrow shoes.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Wear shoes.
Bandit / Minor Character
Six shoes.
Sailor / Minor Character
I think the three of us have a little fun. Jewelry. Come on. We say hello to our friends.
Howard
Water.
Dobbs
Water. I made it. And I made it. The town can't be far off now. The road over there. Just one more day and.
Sailor / Minor Character
Hola, mijo.
Dobbs
What do you want?
Sailor / Minor Character
Well, three poor men in Russia. Cigarettes. You have cigarettes, maybe?
Dobbs
No, no, I haven't. I got a little tobacco. That'll do.
Sailor / Minor Character
Oh, he's got a little tobacco.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
No paper to roll it in?
Dobbs
Paper. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sailor / Minor Character
Going into Perl, amigo.
Dobbs
That's right. I gotta sell my burrows. I got to get the money.
Sailor / Minor Character
Marches for cigarette.
Dobbs
Yeah.
Sailor / Minor Character
You sick, maybe?
Producer / Ken
Sick?
Dobbs
No, no, I ran out of water. All right, now, I could use a good burrow driver. Maybe. Maybe two or three. Hey, when we get to town, I'm a hunter. You see all those hides?
Sailor / Minor Character
Hey, did I know you're from. From place? Maybe I know you are.
Dobbs
No. No, I. I don't think so.
Sailor / Minor Character
You are all alone there. Poor lonely man.
Dobbs
Oh, no, no, I'm not alone. I. I got a couple of friends coming along. They. They ought to be here any minute.
Sailor / Minor Character
They look at your face. I know I see you before.
Howard
Up in the mountains.
Sailor / Minor Character
The guy in the rocks.
Howard
Before the federales changed. You're crazy.
Dobbs
I never seen you till now.
Sailor / Minor Character
You don't remember me? Me with the yellow sombrero, the gold hat. I think you tell a lie.
Howard
No, no, I'm not lying.
Dobbs
Listen.
Sailor / Minor Character
Oh, yeah. Had a lot of hides on the burros, huh?
Dobbs
Yeah, like I.
Howard
Like I said, I'm a hunter.
Sailor / Minor Character
Ought to bring lots of money, huh? All this hide.
Dobbs
Get away from them.
Howard
Get away from them hide.
Sailor / Minor Character
I can tell. These burros, too.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Hey, watch this.
Sailor / Minor Character
These little cloth bags filled with something.
Dobbs
Give me the knife.
Local / Indian Guide
I think I.
Curtin
Look in the little bag.
Howard
You touch those bags, I'll kill you.
Local / Indian Guide
Okay. He's some kind of a joke.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Nothing in his back.
Curtain
Hold his hand.
Bandit / Minor Character
Dirt.
Curtain
All the little bags got.
Bandit / Minor Character
Only dead.
Howard
Get out of here. Clear out before I.
Sailor / Minor Character
You can't run in the clouds. With that, you can only shoot one of us before the other two jump on you. That one won't mind too much because the federalists are after him anyway.
Howard
And back there, stand out
Curtain
with the rock.
Local / Indian Guide
I hit him with a rocket.
Curtain
Shoes.
Howard
I get his shoes finishing off.
Sailor / Minor Character
Come on, finish me.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
How you feeling? Couldn't.
Howard
I'm all right.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
That'll be the town over the hill there. Perler. We're almost there.
Howard
Yeah, but will Dobbs be there?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yes, sir. That's the question. All right. Shooting? Yeah, kind of like a body sound. Seem to come from town. Banditos see. Federales. Execution. Probably. We know pretty soon now. Looks like we guessed it right. Curtain. Execution. Three bandits. Storekeeper here says one of them was gold hat. You finally got him.
Announcer / Radio Host
Yes.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
He says that's not all either.
Howard
Look, we better keep after Dobbs.
Producer / Ken
Now, you think of Madas.
Local / Indian Guide
No, teacher.
Producer / Ken
Senor.
James Cody
To compaero.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Bueno. To compa. He's dead. Curtain. Garb is dead.
Curtain
Dead?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah. Those bandits.
Howard
But. But our goods. What's he say about our goods?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
He says he's got everything in the back of the store.
Howard
It's not here.
Curtin
How would.
Howard
The gold is gone. Everything else is here but the gold.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
No, senor.
Local / Indian Guide
No, Theo, no.
Howard
Well, huh?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
He says everything the bandits had right here.
Local / Indian Guide
Senor, you asked my father about some little canvas bags?
Ryan Seacrest
Yeah.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Yeah, that's right.
Local / Indian Guide
Where are they? I heard the bandidos talking in the cave, seor. They say the senor whom they killed had canvas bags with sand in them. Many, many bags on the boroughs.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Where are they? Where'd they kill the Americans?
Local / Indian Guide
At the water hole by the ruined wall outside the town.
Curtain
Can you tag us there?
Local / Indian Guide
The seasonal? Right away.
Curtin
There's another one.
Howard
Howard. It's empty. These bags are all empty. They're cut open and empty.
Curtain
They keep the gang. Keep looking there.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
All right, they're empty. Another couple hours.
Curtain
In this wind, we wouldn't even find a bag.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Whipped away and buried under the dust of the earth.
Howard
But what happened here?
Local / Indian Guide
Bandits.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Them miserable, stupid, ignorant bandits.
Curtain
Stole Dobbs shoes, took the shirt off
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
on his back and threw away $105,000 worth of gold.
Howard
Oh, it must be here on the ground somewhere.
Curtain
In this wind. It's a big joke, Curtain, old boy, laugh. It's a great joke played on us by the Lord of fate and nature, or whatever you prefer. But whoever or whatever played it certainly had a sense of humor. The cold is gone, Curtain. Gone Back where we found it. Going.
Howard
All right.
Curtain
Well, gone. Doctor is dead and the gold is gone.
Bandit / Minor Character
This is worth 10 months of suffering and labor.
Curtain
This is Jo. Look at. Look at the Indians when they're laughing.
Howard
Too
Sailor / Minor Character
holy.
Curtain
They don't know what they're laughing at. Our own Private Joe.
Curtin
Howard.
Howard
What?
Local / Indian Guide
Yeah.
Curtin
Next year, I wonder.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
As far as I'm concerned, I'm fixed. I'll go back to the engines.
Announcer / Radio Host
Yeah.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Be a medicine man. Three meals a day, a roof over my head and a drink every now and then to warm me up. I'll be worshiped and fed, treated like a high priest for telling people things they want to hear. Good medicine men are born, not made.
Producer / Ken
Yeah.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Come and see me sometime. A boy.
Sailor / Minor Character
Yeah.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I'll be fixed for the rest of a natural life.
Curtain
How about yourself?
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
What do you aim to be doing?
Curtin
Oh, I haven't got any idea.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, you're young yet. You. You got plenty of time to make three, four fortunes for yourselves.
Curtin
Well, you know, I'm really no worse off than I was back in Tampico. Not a couple hundred bucks, when you come right down to it. Not very much compared to what Dobsy lost.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Any special place you bet on going?
Curtin
Oh, places are the same to me.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
Oh, say, look, I'll tell you what. You can keep my share what the burrs and the hides will bring if you use the money to buy a ticket to Dallas. See, Cody's with it. You know, it's better than writing. Just tell her what happened.
Curtin
Okay, Pop.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs
I'll go to Dallas. Hey, you, son. Come here. Tell your father to give this man all the hides in the burrs, and I'm going off of the engines. Well, you guess I'll round up my heathen brethren and we'll be on our way. Goodbye. Couldn't.
Curtin
Goodbye, Howard.
Curtain
Good luck.
Narrator / Fred C. Dobbs

Podcast: Harold's Old Time Radio
Host: Harold's Old Time Radio
Episode Date: July 24, 2026
Starring: Edmund O’Brien as Dobbs, Walter Brennan as Howard
This episode of the Lux Radio Theatre brings to life “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” the classic tale of greed, camaraderie, mistrust, and fate in the quest for gold, set in post-revolutionary Mexico. Through gripping performances and the vintage charm of radio drama, listeners are drawn into the trials and unraveling relationships between prospectors Fred C. Dobbs, Curtin, and the elder Howard as their expedition for riches spirals into suspicion and tragedy.
Lux Radio Theatre’s take on “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” is a masterful audio retelling, capturing both the adventure and the psychological unraveling at the heart of this tale. The episode lays bare the corrosive effects of greed and mistrust, culminating in an ending as ironically bitter as any in classic American storytelling. The rich dialogue and emotional performances convey the era’s spirit and morality, making it compelling both as drama and as a reflection on human nature.
