As a data center, I love talking networking. So when Nokia dropped by the other day, we had a great conversation.
Dan Clancy
Nokia what?
Data Center Representative
Yes, Nokias and data centers. They have the entire networking portfolio.
Dan Clancy
Anyway, I said, the Nokia?
Data Center Representative
Yes, the Nokia. They connect inside, they interconnect outside. So I said, can you help me be really AI ready? And they just smiled. You see?
Dan Clancy
Really, really get your data center AI ready.
Judith
Someday is here with Nokia.
Data Center Representative
Really?
Dan Clancy
Cattleman A Saga of the Outback specially dramatized from the prize winning novel of R.S. portheus. Cat.
Sergeant Dunn
Ann had come home to cool a bah with his sister Judith. Much to Dan Clancy's dismay. Three women about the place, including Bitty, was just too much for the old warrior. And to add to his problems, on their first morning home, Ann had had a visitor in the person of Sergeant Dunn, the local police officer from Veranda, who was obviously intent on getting his own back. By telling Ann of my trouble with the law, Dan managed to get Ann inside and promptly ordered Dunn off the property. The sergeant refused to leave, and Dan picked up a pitchfork in an effort to persuade him.
Dan Clancy
You're trespassing on private property, Sarge. And I got a right to deal with trespassers as I see fit. Move.
Mrs. Macready
Dan, what's going on out here? What on earth are you doing, Blair?
Dan Clancy
Him do a sergeant. I'll run you clean through. That's a promise. Oh, I was just showing the sarge how sharp these prongs are. He's thinking of buying one himself and he wants to get the best. Nothing like a practical demonstration, I always say. Hey, Sarge, what was that you said? Speak up, we can't hear you.
Bob Dunn
Yeah, yeah, that's right, Mrs. McCready. I. I've been needing one of these things for long enough. Just ain't got round to buying one.
Mrs. Macready
Why would you want a pitchfork, for heaven's sake?
Dan Clancy
To keep them Veranda roughnecks in line. What else? Police officers gotta be prepared for every kind of emergency. Like when someone talks too much or gets rowdy. Ain't that a fact, Sarge?
Bob Dunn
Yeah, that's a fact.
Mrs. Macready
Well, I'm sure the sergeant's had sufficient demonstration. Dan, if you're not careful, you'll tear the seat of his trousers.
Dan Clancy
Oh, my, my, how clumsy of me. I do beg your pardon, Sergeant, to a slip of the wrist, but. Oh, this ain't no sight for a lady. And you better go back inside before the sergeant gets embarrassed. Dear.
Mrs. Macready
Anne, what is it? What? Well, it's all right, dear. The sergeant's had a slight accident. Go into the shed, Sergeant. Dan, you bring his trousers in and I'll mend them. He can't possibly go back to town like that. Now. Come along, Judith.
Dan Clancy
How did he do it?
Mrs. Macready
Dan did it with a pitchfork. His hand. Slit.
Bob Dunn
Clancy, I'll kill you for this.
Dan Clancy
I'll kill you. It is hard you lose them altogether.
Bob Dunn
You owe me life.
Dan Clancy
Out.
Bob Dunn
No one ever made a fool of me like you. Just John.
Dan Clancy
Easy. Take it easy. I'll buy you. They've gone inside. Now you can breathe easy. I reckon Ed was right, though. Wouldn't do for you to be seen in town like that. You duck in the shed and take them off and I'll take them into her. Few stitches are as good as new. Your missus'll never know the difference.
Bob Dunn
You got me now, Clancy. You got me good. But there's gonna be a next diamond. By heavens. I'll fix your apricot. I'll fix it.
Dan Clancy
You want to mend it or don't you? Then get in that shed and get in there faster. You'll ride back at veranda as you are.
Mrs. Macready
Dan.
Dan Clancy
One pair of trousers.
Mrs. Macready
You did that on purpose.
Dan Clancy
On purpose. Ripped the sergeant's trousers. Now why would I do a thing like that?
Mrs. Macready
That's what I want to know.
Judith
You have some explaining to do, Mr. Clancy.
Dan Clancy
It was an accident. I never would have believed them prongs were so sharp.
Judith
By the look of him, I'd say you certainly proved your point.
Mrs. Macready
It's no laughing matter, Judith. Sergeant was about to tell me something to do with Ben. That's when you called me into the house.
Dan Clancy
We can talk about it later. If you don't get a move on with them trousers. The poor bloke might catch a chill. Then he'd really have something to complain about. Here we are, Serge. All sewed up so's you never know the difference.
Bob Dunn
Hand em over.
Dan Clancy
Ah, not so fast. Before I do, I'm gonna need some guarantee that you won't go straight back into the house and spill the beans.
Bob Dunn
You can't stop me telling her. Nothing you can do is gonna.
Dan Clancy
You wanna bet? I have here a piece of paper. You're gonna do some writin on it. Then you're gonna sign your name at the bottom. When it's done, you get your trousers back and not before. You know, this puts me in mind of something that happened a long time ago involving a pair of trousers. They belong to our old pal Delacy. And he never stopped to argue about nothing fancy. I warn you, you have two minutes to write. What I tell you, if not, there's gonna be another accident. These trousers is accidentally gonna catch on fire. So let's get started, eh? Put the date on top.
Bob Dunn
I ain't writing nothing.
Dan Clancy
I, Sergeant Bob Dunn of Veranda, admit full responsibility for. Better hurry it up, Sarge. Your time's running out.
Bob Dunn
No, listen, Clancy, I.
Dan Clancy
Full responsibility for not having personally checked to see that the way Bill I issued Ben Macready, granting him Permission to shift 350 head of Coolabah stock to the New South Wales border was in order. You got that?
Bob Dunn
He would have meant saving my life.
Dan Clancy
Your life won't be worth living if you ride back into Veranda without your trousers, Sarge. You'll be the laughingstock of the territory.
Bob Dunn
And what'll I be if I write down a thing like that out of a job, that's what.
Dan Clancy
Well, there's no reason why anyone should ever see it. Just so long as you keep your yap shut about, Ben. It ain't too much to ask. Ain't much?
Bob Dunn
Why, you.
Dan Clancy
You got to lie? Count five to start. Right. One.
Bob Dunn
Clancy, I'll give you me word I won't say nothing.
Dan Clancy
2.
Bob Dunn
I won't come near the place again. Look, I swear to you, I. All right, all right, I'll do it.
Dan Clancy
Ah, that's more like it. I, Sergeant Bob Dunn of Veranda, admit full responsibility for not having personal. The above is true in every detail. Then sign your name.
Bob Dunn
What was that last bit again?
Dan Clancy
I solemnly swear that the above is true in every detail. Ah, now, your signature. Reckon that should do it. I'll just put this safely away. And here's your trousers.
Bob Dunn
I've heard a lot of stories about you, Clancy. Most of them I never believed till now.
Dan Clancy
There's one thing you can believe, Sarge. When I make a deal, I stick to it. Now, there's no reason there should be any hard feelings over this. I promise, Ben. I'd do my best to protect his interests. And that's all I'm doing.
Mrs. Macready
Dan. Dan, can I come in?
Dan Clancy
Sure. The serge is respectable again now.
Mrs. Macready
Oh, Sergeant, I must apologize for Mr. Clancy. It was really too careless of.
Bob Dunn
That's all right, Mrs. Macready. Wasn't none of your doing.
Mrs. Macready
Before we were so rudely interrupted, you were going to tell me something about Ben.
Bob Dunn
Oh, well, it was nothing important. Just about a way Bill I made out for him a while back. I didn't bother you with it now. Mr. Clancy cleared things up.
Mrs. Macready
Are you sure there's nothing else?
Bob Dunn
No, nothing.
Mrs. Macready
Well, in that case, perhaps you'd care to join us inside for a cup of tea. Judith's just made a party.
Bob Dunn
Ah, thanks all the same, but I gotta be pushing off. Lot of things to do in town.
Mrs. Macready
But surely you can spare.
Dan Clancy
The sergeant's a busy man and we wouldn't want to keep him from his duty. Well, glad you stopped by, sarge. Like I said, I hope there's no hard feelings. Next time I'm in town I'll call in and buy you a drink.
Judith
Oh, Dan, can you spare a minute?
Dan Clancy
What's up?
Judith
Have you forgotten you promised me an explanation?
Dan Clancy
Yeah, that's right. So I did. Well, there are certain things that don't bear too much talking about.
Judith
Such as?
Dan Clancy
Such as things that might hurt innocent people. Like? Like Anne.
Judith
You intrigue me. What could Sergeant Dunn have to say that could possibly hurt Anne?
Dan Clancy
Well, I reckon I don't have to tell you how she feels about Ben. In her eyesies her.
Judith
He's the air she breathes. He's everything that's worthwhile.
Dan Clancy
That's about it. She sort of put him on a. On a pedestal, if you know what I mean.
Judith
I know what you mean.
Dan Clancy
I wouldn't want to see that pedestal kicked out from under him, would you?
Judith
No, I wouldn't. Is it in danger of being kicked out from under him?
Dan Clancy
It was. But I reckon the danger's past now.
Mrs. Macready
I see.
Judith
Thank you, Dan.
Dan Clancy
What for?
Judith
Paying me the compliment of confiding in me. I won't ask any more questions. On one condition.
Dan Clancy
What's that?
Judith
That you'll teach me how to ride.
Dan Clancy
Teach you how to what?
Judith
To ride a horse. I've never ridden one before.
Dan Clancy
Never ridden a horse?
Judith
Never.
Dan Clancy
Well, I'll be blowed. Here I thought you was a educated woman.
Judith
Oh, certain aspects of my schooling were overlooked.
Dan Clancy
Oh, so you want me to teach you?
Judith
I'd be very grateful.
Dan Clancy
Of course, you know that horses are pretty temperamental.
Judith
They are?
Dan Clancy
Oh, crikey. Yeah. You gotta know how to handle em.
Judith
I'm sure you can show me.
Dan Clancy
Well, there's certain things you gotta learn for yourself. Such as? How to fall when they chuck you. How to fall so you don't break no bones.
Judith
Dear, that wouldn't do at all.
Dan Clancy
I once saw a fellow throwin 23ft up. Landed on his skull. Bang.
Judith
Was he badly hurt?
Dan Clancy
They buried him next day.
Judith
You wouldn't be trying to scare me off, would you, Mr. Clancy?
Dan Clancy
Hey, I wouldn't do a thing like that. You wanna ride? That's fine. Come on, I'll give you your first lesson. No, why not? There's old Sally over there. I'll get her saddled for you. Quiet as a mouse, she is. Why, there's just one thing to watch with her.
Judith
Oh, what's that?
Dan Clancy
When she throws you, keep your head covered so she don't trample you.
Judith
Trample me?
Dan Clancy
Yeah, it's a kind of habit of hers. Well, she don't mean nothing by it. It's just her way of having a little fun.
Judith
If you don't mind, Mr. Clancy, I think I might leave my first lesson till tomorrow. I just had Anne fix my hair and I'd hate to have Sally mess it up.
Sergeant Dunn
Dan had the situation well in end at Culabah. And on the other side of the world, me and Danny were facing another kind of situation. The one that was going to take a little longer to settle.
