This is Ellery Queen with a case I call the well Dressed Killer. From my country place, I could see flames rising from the neighboring Jones farm. By the time I got there, police were talking to Jones. It seems Jones's farmhand had died in the blaze. Jones said he was awakened by the flames and the screams of the farmhand. He said after hurriedly throwing on some clothes, he tried to use the hose, but that so he finally plunged into the roaring barn, but it was too late. Jones said he would have been burned too, except for his high laced boots and heavy jacket. I said, Mr. Jones, you're in trouble. In a moment I'll explain. In the case of the well Dressed Killer, Jones wouldn't have bothered to put on and lace up high boots if he just awakened to the fire and screams. Faced with that observation, Jones admitted setting the fire a fire of death.
