Spider Magee
In the harsh of the night I am dreaming when the voice of the city is still all the friends in the dear old green valley and the murmuring stream by the mill.
Narrator
We present the first episode in the Green Valley Line. A story of a small back country railroad in the early years of the 20th century. A story of the lives of small town people in the America of 35 years ago. Our story opens at a little water tank siding on the hill above Morristown. A small railroad terminal in the heart of the Green Valley. As the darkness gathers, the lights begin to twinkle in the little town below. In the shadow of the big water tank, two men sit waiting for an incoming freight. Both are important characters in our story. So let us introduce them to you. The first is Spider Magee, a wandering fireman of the type known in railroad slang as a boomer. The other, whose identity we shall not yet disclose, is a slim, good looking youngster who, in spite of the rough clothes he wears, betrays the unmistakable stamp of education and refinement. Let us listen to their conversation.
Spider Magee
There she comes, slim. That's old 72 and Mickey Dunnigan's pulling her. We'll get right under town.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Say, she won't take water here, will she?
Spider Magee
Nah, they most always stop before hitting the downgrade. She's slow up anyway. Get ready to jump for the engine cab.
Slim (Bill Reed)
All right. Here she comes.
Spider Magee
Hello there, Mickey, old son of a gun. Hello. Well, well, well. By the horny porter to the old. Hey, Spider, you're looking fine. But what the devil brings you here? Oh, I do. Put on your injector now. It's time for me and my pal to get a ride out of town. Mickey? Sure, hop aboard with you. Hurry now.
Narrator
Sure.
Spider Magee
Come on, Slim.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Okay, Spider, go.
Spider Magee
Is it a job you're looking for on the Green Valley, Spider, me boy? Sure, I'm just heading in to see old Pop Harkins. Figure the things will be getting busy around here. There's plenty doing all right, plenty doing. But you'll find A terrible change around Morristown. How's that, Mickey? Well, for one thing, there's a new masher mechanic under God. The master mechanic in Green Valley. Why, listen, ain't oh, my practice to handle things anymore? He's killed the boss, of course. But, dear, here is a fellow named Cronin from the cknw. Cronin? Oh, yes, I know him. So that's the layout. Well, what's been going around here anyway? Search me, Spider, me boy, search me. There's a power to talk on the road. They do say there's a big chance of the Green Valley being sold to the ckmw. Well, I would be darned. But say, Mickey, you don't suppose folks around here want to stand for that? They've always been against it. There's a lot of trouble ahead. I'm thinking. Thinking what? They'll be having a showdown pretty soon. John Graham's backing from the east. He is? Came in on the number 10 yesterday. Oh, well, he's the president of the Green Valley, ain't he? That's right. That's right. But it's himself is wanting to swing the deal to send the old Green Valley. What's old dad Hackness got to say about it? Well, no, horse, he's against it. Sure, all the Valley folks is with him. Sure they are. There'll be the devil to pay around here and think. Say, Mickey, what do you suppose is a chance to get a job with this here fella Cronin? Mighty little Spider, me boy. Mighty little. He's a pretty hard man. He's bringing quite a few coming in from the cknw. Oh, listen now, Spider.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Yeah?
Spider Magee
You and the boy here has better be dropping off before we head in. I'll be slowing down to the switch in a minute. Stand by now. Hey, Joe, kill that. Look, we're heading in on track number five. Okay, Mickey, and thanks for the good news. I'll be seeing you. Come on, Slim.
Slim (Bill Reed)
I know which way now, Spider.
Spider Magee
We'll look over back at the house. Tracking on ahead of crossover to Mark Flint. I gotta stand in there and we'll get us a handout. Gosh, but I'm hungry.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Hold on a minute, Spider.
Spider Magee
What's wrong now?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Let's sit down a while. I want to talk things over.
Spider Magee
Okay, Slim. What's on your mind? I've been thinking over what that engineer.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Told you back in the cab.
Spider Magee
Yeah? Well, what about?
Slim (Bill Reed)
It looks as if it's going to be tough to get a job around here.
Spider Magee
Sure looks tough all right. But that's okay, Slim. You stick with me. And these here. There's nothing doing here. Why, we'll drift back in the mainland and get us a job.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Oh, I'm not worrying about jobs.
Spider Magee
Huh? Say, listen here, Slim. I don't get you. Of course you've been staking me, but what is it you're aiming to do around here? Ain't figuring to stick up a bank, are you?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Oh, nothing like that.
Spider Magee
Gosh darn it, I can't size you up no how. Here, you're beating your way clear from Omaha and guess you got lots of dough. You ain't dodging the cops, are you?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Oh, no, wrong again, Spider. Listen, you know this Green Valley Railroad pretty well, don't you?
Spider Magee
Sure. Worked here half a dozen times. Always aim to drift in this way towards fall and get a job in the rush season.
Narrator
I see.
Slim (Bill Reed)
What's this talk about the Green Valley being sold to some other road?
Spider Magee
Well, you see, Slim, the C, K and W's always been after this year's streak of rust.
Slim (Bill Reed)
What for?
Spider Magee
Well, because it's a better grades through the mountains than the CK&W and that's. And now the competition's getting tough and traffic's speeding up. You see, this here Green Valley looks like the answer.
Slim (Bill Reed)
I see. But what's this about the local people being again selling out?
Spider Magee
Well, it's like this here, Bill. This here Green Valley road was built by two men. One's Pop Harkness, he's the superintendent here in Morristown. And the other's John Graham, president of the road.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Well, what's that got to do with it?
Spider Magee
Well, that's what I'm coming to. You see, it was old Pop Harkness that built the road. John Graham did the financing. Now it's Graham that wants to sell out.
Abby
Ah.
Slim (Bill Reed)
And this other fellow, Harkness, is against it, huh?
Spider Magee
Sure, that's right. All the Green Valley folks is back in Pop Harkness. They want to keep the Green Valley in their own hands. This Graham back from the East, Dickin with JJ Reed. That's the old bloodsucker that controlled the Sea Kane.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Yeah, hold on a minute, Spider.
Spider Magee
What's the matter now?
Slim (Bill Reed)
All right, all right, never mind. Go ahead.
Spider Magee
Oh. Oh, well, that's about the whole story, I guess. But say, what is this to you?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Never mind that, Spider. Tell me, what's this old Pop Harkness like anyway?
Spider Magee
Well, he's one of the whitest men you ever see. And he's a darn good railroad man, too. Runs the whole works around Here. Or anyway he used to until now. Seems like things has kind of changed, though. And Pop Harkness ain't got all the say.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Well, thanks a lot, Spider. I think I'll make a little stay here in Morristown and see how things pan out.
Spider Magee
Oh, well, listen here, Slim. Let's eat.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Oh, you go ahead first, Spider. I've got to get over the hotel. There'll be a bunch of mail there for me.
Spider Magee
Say, you ain't running out on me, are you, Slim?
Slim (Bill Reed)
I know, Spider. You know I'm not. But I've got some baggage at the hotel that I had sent ahead. I'm going over and change.
Spider Magee
All right.
Slim (Bill Reed)
By the way, where is this place you're going?
Spider Magee
Right over there, back at the station. The Green Valley Restaurant.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Okay, Spider, I'll see you later.
Spider Magee
Well, I'll be darned. Who is this guy, anyway? Hello, Abby. How are you?
Abby
Oh, well, for Goodness sake, Spider McGee.
Sarah
Where did you come from?
Spider Magee
No, just flew in on 72. Where's Ma, Flint?
Abby
She's in back. Oh, Ma.
Spider Magee
Yes, where is it?
Abby
Abby, come and look who's here. What's the matter? Well, for land's sake, if it ain't Snyder. Come back.
Spider Magee
Howdy, Ma. Darnedy, you ain't looking 10 years younger than when I last seen you.
Abby
Go on with you, Spider. Muggee. Say, where you been to all this time?
Spider Magee
Almost everywhere, I reckon, from Texas to Maine. Things was getting kind of quiet back east, and so I just thought I'd.
Abby
Strike out here, you know. And so you struck out for the Green Valley, huh? My land. It's a wonder you don't get tired of drifting and settle down sometimes.
Spider Magee
Hold on there, Abby. Say, Abby.
AM PM Advertiser
Yes?
Spider Magee
Get me some ham and eggs and a stack of toast, will ya? I'm kind of hungry.
Abby
Okay, Spider. Ham and hit a stack.
Spider Magee
How's things, Ma? Busy.
Abby
Oh, so. So it's kind of quiet this evening, but business is picking up some. I'm glad to see you back, Spider.
Spider Magee
Fine. Say, listen now, Ma, I gotta have.
Slim (Bill Reed)
A talk with you.
Abby
Well, all right, Spider. Let's sit down in the booth for a while. The boys off of 72 will be in pretty soon, and then I'll have to get busy.
Spider Magee
That's okay with me. It'll only take about a minute.
Abby
Well, Spider, what's on your mind?
Spider Magee
Well, I was talking to Mickey on 72. He says things are getting tough around here for getting jobs. Thought maybe you'd put in a word for me with Pop Harkness.
Abby
I don't know, Spider. Things ain't what they used to be around Morristown. There's a new master mechanic. His name is Cronin.
Spider Magee
Yeah, I heard about him bringing in his old men, ain't he?
Abby
That's right. Tank's the easy Spider. But I'll see what I can do for you.
Spider Magee
Oh, thanks, Ma. I got a friend with me too.
Abby
Uh huh. A railroad man?
Spider Magee
Well, I don't know. He seems to be. He's kind of used to railroading. Kind of a mysterious guy. Ain't even told me his name yet. But we got friendly back in Omaha. And as we was both heading for the Green Valley, we kind of stuck together.
Abby
Well, what's he after, Spider? A job?
Spider Magee
Don't it rightly. No, Ma, I ain't sized him up exactly. Guess maybe his folks got money in the Green Valley. Seems mighty curious about what's going on around here.
Abby
Mm. There's a lot of strange faces been showing up lately.
Spider Magee
I heard how they was aiming to sell the Green Valley.
Abby
Who's been telling you that?
Spider Magee
Oh, I just heard talk of it.
Abby
Well, let me tell you something, Spider. There's nothing to it.
Spider Magee
No.
Abby
If John Grimm tries to swindle us out of the money we folks put in, there's gonna be trouble.
Spider Magee
Okay with me, Ma.
Abby
It's that Jacob Reed he's in with. He's grabbed off most every little railroad he ever went after. Put his men in and froze out the stockholders. But this time he's gonna lose out.
Spider Magee
Now I'll see.
Abby
Here, Ma, somebody's coming in.
Spider Magee
Huh? What'd you say? Why, gosh darn it, a Slim. You old son of a gun. So it's you, is it? All slicked up. Say, where'd you get them good clothes? Come on in, Slim. Shake hands with more Flynn.
Abby
What'd you say his name was?
Spider Magee
Oh, just call him Slim.
Abby
Uh huh. Well, I gotta go. See you again, Spider.
Spider Magee
Sure. Well, sit down, Slim. I was just going to eat. Boy, you sure look different than them clothes.
Abby
Oh, here's your ham and egg, Spider. What else would you like?
Spider Magee
Oh, let me hold your hand. Oh, go on. Not a thing. Just lay it right down there, Abby. That's it. Say, meet my pal Abby, this here Slim that I was telling you about. Hello.
Abby
Oh, pleased to meet you. Can I get you something?
Slim (Bill Reed)
No, I just want to talk to Spider here.
Spider Magee
Thanks. Okay. Well, Slim, old partner, what's the good word?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Say, the old lady seems sort of hostile.
Abby
Ma.
Spider Magee
Oh, she's okay. Ma's got her head up ever since these rumors about the railroad being sold. Aw, don't pay no attention to her. Hey, Bill, take a look at that dame that just come in. Ain't she a peach?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Boy, I'll say so. Who is it, Spider?
Spider Magee
Don't know, Slim. Ain't nobody around lives around here. Swell looker though, ain't she, Spider? She's.
Slim (Bill Reed)
She's wonderful. I wonder who she is.
Spider Magee
Better find out from Abby. Looks as though there was pretty well acquainted anyhow.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Sure, that's just what I'm going to do. And say, Spider, about that job you're looking for in the Green Valley.
Spider Magee
It's all fixed.
Abby
What?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Say.
Spider Magee
Say, listen, Slim.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Yes, it is.
Spider Magee
You ain't kidding me, are you?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Kidding? No, I say not. I was talking to Cronin over at the hotel.
Spider Magee
Cronin? You mean the new master mechanic? Sure.
Slim (Bill Reed)
I had a letter to him. It's okay. You go round and see him at the shop. 8 o' clock tomorrow morning.
Spider Magee
I'll be dog.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Yeah, he's got a place for you.
Spider Magee
Good.
Slim (Bill Reed)
He's going to put you firing with Mickey Donegan.
Spider Magee
Oh, great. A job for me firing?
Slim (Bill Reed)
That's right.
Spider Magee
Do you mean.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Sure, I mean it. I'll give you a note to take round.
Spider Magee
Oh, darn it all, Slim, that's mighty white.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Forget it.
Spider Magee
But say, how come you got this here standing with crone?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Oh, never mind that, Spider. It's a long, long story. But the job's all right, though.
Spider Magee
Well, I'll be.
Abby
You want anything else, Spider?
Slim (Bill Reed)
Hey, Abby. Who was that girl you were just talking to at the counter?
Sarah
Why, that's Carrie Graham.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Graham? Sure.
Abby
Her father's president of the Green Valley Railroad.
Spider Magee
Well, I'm assuming, of course, she's been.
Abby
Away at college the last three years.
Slim (Bill Reed)
So that's Carolyn Graham. Well, I'm darned.
Spider Magee
Oh, you don't know her, do you, Slim?
Slim (Bill Reed)
No, I never. Never saw her before.
Narrator
But.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Well, never mind, Spider. I've got to go back to the hotel now. You come around and see me sometime tomorrow, will you?
Spider Magee
Yeah, sure, Slim. I'll be seeing you.
Slim (Bill Reed)
Good night, Spider.
Spider Magee
So long, Slim.
Abby
Well, Spider, so you're getting into society, huh?
Spider Magee
What do you mean, Mom?
Abby
Listen, Spider McGee, if that's the kind of folks you're running around with, you'd better stay out of here.
Spider Magee
Oh, now, say, listen. Slim's all right. He's fixing me with a job with Cronin.
Abby
Fixing you for a job, Izzy? Sure. And you telling me you don't even know his name? Now see here, Ma, in case you don't know That's Bill reed, son of J.J. reed, the old crocodile that's aiming to grab off the Green Valley getting you a job.
Spider Magee
Well suffering Pete.

Episode Theme:
This first episode of the classic radio serial "Green Valley Line" introduces listeners to the storied Green Valley Railroad at a time of unrest, community versus corporate interests, and new arrivals who might help shape the future of this small-town line. The tale sets the stage for drama among working folks, railroad tycoons, and mysterious newcomers.
The episode immerses listeners in the early 20th-century world of Morristown, at the heart of the Green Valley railroad. The Green Valley faces buyout threats from a larger railway company, CK&W, fostering anxiety, intrigue, and suspicion among the locals. As Spider Magee, a seasoned "boomer" fireman, returns to town, he brings along a mysterious, well-mannered stranger known only as "Slim." Together, they navigate shifting allegiances, small-town gossip, and the possibility of impending upheaval.

This debut episode deftly introduces core conflicts—local independence vs. corporate imperatives, concealed identities, and the stubborn perseverance of working-class characters. The plot is propelled by the rapport between Spider and the enigmatic Slim/Bill Reed, and the larger-than-life personalities (like Pop Harkness and Ma Flint) who root the story in its small-town atmosphere.
Listeners are left with a cliffhanger as the real motives of Slim/Bill Reed—and the fate of the Green Valley railroad—begin to unfold. The stage is set for a classic tale of intrigue, loyalty, and the fight for a community's way of life.
