Fantasies Back along the dusty corridors of time, we travel to find Hawaii. Not Hawaii as we know her now, but as she was in the days before the white man came. Her legends live forever in the minds of her happy people. One tale loved by each Polynesian concerns the magic pipes of Kaua Kaheali Kaua was a young chief who lived in a sacred valley guarded by a powerful sorceress. She guarded him so well that no man had ever seen the youth. If they dared enter the valley, she would fill it with the thickest of mists. Now the kupua taught him to play on two magic pipes, which sounded the words of his song as well as the melody. But Kaua was sad, for he was lonely and there was no one to hear his song. Sa, my dear. One day Kaua heard whisperings of the beauty of a nearby maiden, and so he climbed to a mountaintop to play the magic pipes. She heard his song and followed it to the sacred valley, where she met Kaua. The sorceress, angry at first, soon relented, and preparations were made for a marriage feast. On the day of the marriage, lightnings and thunder proclaimed the royal blood of the young couple, and the happy pair were made one. Sam, the bride of Kaua, fell victim to a deep sleep which lasted many wounds. Her young husband guarded her for 12 months, waiting for her to awaken. Then bowed with grief. He placed one of the magic pipes on her bosom and left her to travel from island to island to drown his sorrow. Years passed, and one day Kaua met a maiden who reminded him of his departed wife. He consented to an engagement to please the old sorceress, for a chief of royal birth must not remain unmarried. But Kaua was sad forever. In his heart echoed the song of the magic pipes which had won him his beloved Jesus Sam Sa. At last Kaua was to marry again. But there came a strange maiden to the island. At the feast she told the story of Kaua and the bride who slept. Then Kaua looked at her, seeing she was like the maiden he had loved. But she did not answer him when he asked when she came. Night fell and Kaua crept into her house while she slept. Touching her bosom he found the magic pipe he had placed on the bosom of his loved one. Overjoyed, he piped the love song and the maiden awoke. Awoke doubly springing from her long sleep for it was she. And the magic pipes brought Kaua his beloved once again to return him to the sacred valley where even today may be heard the faint notes of the magic pipes of Kaua Kahi Ali and now we leave Hawaii, the beautiful buried in the legends of ancient days. Soon we shall return and dwell beside the murmuring sea until then. Aloha.
