Dr. Atwater
You are prompt. If nothing else, Joan, I trust you are successful in your assigned task.
Jean
Atwater's parents and his child are secure for now in the location, as per your instructions.
Dr. Atwater
Yes, yes. Delightful. You met with no problem in their collection?
Richard
None at all.
Dr. Atwater
Yes, I'm sure they're just charming people, aren't they, Dr. Atwater? He's really quite a tragic fellow.
Jean
Jean.
Dr. Atwater
Our dear, devoted doctor. I dare say his family life has really been a shambles. How lovely.
Jean
Certainly. I would like to now be informed of your next intentions. I think it would be best to move the child and its grandparents from their current location.
Dr. Atwater
I will not stand for for your constant second guessing, Jean. Remember your place in these matters. But you're young. Even I was a bit presumptuous at your age. No, no, Jean. You must trust that I know what our friend Richard needs most in his life. A woman's touch. No. Leave Richard's little family where they are.
Jean
You are awfully confident in your ability to control this Attwater. I do not believe our master has such a low opinion of him.
Dr. Atwater
Know thy place. You try my patience, you insignificant wemp. Remember, I was old when you were still a puling infant.
Robert
It is you who are questioning the.
Dr. Atwater
Father'S judgment when you question mine. He has entrusted me with this errand.
Robert
I alone am perfectly suited to deal with Richard Athwater.
Jean
As you say.
Dr. Atwater
Get out of my sight, Jean, before I lose my patience.
Jean
Very well. I bid you good evening.
Hallie
Yes, Father, she does bear watching.
Dermot
There are some areas of the human.
Jean
Mind, and indeed of the world we live in, that were never meant for investigation. There are always those who delve into the darker worlds of knowledge. Many pay with their sanity for their interest. Some of these unfortunates are taken in by the Hayward foundation, an organization that studies paranormal experiences and their effects on humanity. It is cases such as these that are sent to a restored mansion in a small coastal town in Maine. A center for the care and study of the insane. Since the 1920s, this place has been known as the Hayward Sanitarium.
Hallie
Pointing at that, Richard.
Jean
Now, be cool.
Richard
When we hear jumping around so much.
Robert
You'Re gonna think you got crawdads in.
Jean
Your pants or something. I know, I know.
Justin
Being suspended isn't even much bothering me.
Jean
I'm numb.
Justin
It's like it doesn't exist. I've been going over all the possible connection between Maria's escaping and Dermot's poisoning of Chandler's involvement.
Robert
It's just.
Jean
I can't figure it out.
Justin
There's no Connection and it's driving me crazy.
Jean
Chandler.
Richard
Yeah, his death is a real tranquil. He missed out on a real promise.
Jean
In bartend in Korea. Fraud Jew's cockpit.
Justin
Hey, now who's embarrassing who we are? Geez, I can't take you anywhere.
Jean
And it was coffee, if you recall. That's the spirit. At least you're laughing.
Richard
If we're ever gonna find anything out, though, we're in the right place. Talking to Halle's little boyfriend is sure to be in a Latin and he experience.
Justin
Well, I hope we can see him all right. Excuse me, Deputy.
Richard
May I help you? We're here to visit a fellow y'.
Justin
All got in lockup.
Richard
Visiting rights is limited for prisoners. Right now, given certain circumstances.
Justin
Gentlemen, perhaps we could speak to Sheriff Trumbull.
Sheriff Trumbull
Well, he's sort of busy with those certain circumstances himself. Now, I've got.
Richard
I'm here. I'm here from the foundation, Mr. Deputy Assessor here on this little old ID card. Sheriff, look. He'll be right here.
Jean
Gentlemen, if you'll excuse me. Thank you.
Justin
Everything's man that's rubbed in.
Jean
Why don't you don't even know well.
Richard
How to do, Sheriff.
Deputy Morris
All right, that's that for her and Mr. Carterman. Is that right? Well, I don't mean to be rude. As you can see, we're a bit busy here, huh, Fellas? There something I can do for you?
Justin
Actually, yes. We're here to see Robert Elliot.
Deputy Morris
A mighty popular fellow, that Elliot there. This is official business, of course.
Richard
What do you think we're here to bring that nut case of cake or something?
Jean
Of course it's official.
Justin
The sanitarium is really quite upset about the whole tragedy, Sheriff.
Deputy Morris
All right, boys, follow me. The distant room is a bit occupied just at present. Wallet.
Deputy Jeff
Yeah.
Deputy Morris
Fellas want to talk with that Elliot fella, take them on back to the show, will you? I got the Marsha oy in the visiting room right now.
Deputy Jeff
You feel it's gonna be back here long? I got me a heap of work to do.
Richard
I tell you what, y' all just get on with that and we'll give you a holler south when we're all through, okay?
Deputy Jeff
Well, I suppose he don't look like he's in much shape to give you boys a problem. But we have to you give a shout real quick, le.
Richard
We will, I assure you, Jeff.
Deputy Jeff
I'll be back to check it in.
Richard
A bit, just in case.
Jean
Bye bye. Robert.
Justin
Robert, come out from there. Robert, it's okay.
Dr. Atwater
Just.
Robert
Is that you?
Justin
Yes, it's Me? How are you feeling, Robert?
Richard
How you like in jail, boy? Anybody asked you out on a date yet, or.
Dr. Atwater
Please.
Jean
Just a minute.
Justin
Robert, could I talk to you a little? No one's going to hurt you. You can come out from under the blanket.
Jean
Robert.
Robert
What did I do wrong? Dr. Atwater? Why am I here?
Richard
You did kinda kill Dr. Chandler.
Robert
Is that why? But I did that, right?
Jean
You did that right.
Justin
Did somebody tell you to kill Chandler? Why did you kill him?
Robert
For Hallie, of course. I did that so that we could be together. And now we can. She loves me. She just doesn't know it yet.
Richard
Well, I wouldn't be looking forward to any conjugal visits anytime soon, Hal.
Jean
She's just being honest.
Robert
Just a living.
Justin
Robert, did you give Maria Casador any assistance in her escape from her cell at the sanitarium?
Robert
Why does everybody keep asking me that? Who would let her out? She's dangerous, you know. The other arteries were always so scared to clean the trace.
Justin
Robert, you're in charge of distributing medications on the maximum security wards to patients like Maria, right?
Robert
You know that, Doctor.
Justin
So you administer Dermot o' Brien's medication, correct?
Robert
They keep pretty cold in here, don't they?
Justin
Robert, did you hear me?
Dr. Atwater
Yes.
Justin
O' Brien's medication. You gave it to him personally, right?
Robert
Please, Dr. Atwater, don't. Don't ask me.
Deputy Morris
Damn, it's cold in here.
Robert
I can see my branch.
Justin
Just stamp your feet or something. Robert, I need to know about Derlick's medications. You weren't issuing the prescribed meds, were you? I won't be mad, Robert.
Robert
Just tell me the truth. I can't, Doctor. It's okay.
Justin
Are you afraid? What are you afraid of? I'm not angry. Is there someone else you're afraid of?
Robert
I just did as I was told. I didn't do anything wrong, did I? Who told you? Told you to do what? I gave him the drugs. I had to. I'm sorry, Dr. Uphe. I had to.
Justin
What drugs? Not the ones I prescribed.
Robert
It told me to my mind I had to obey. The Syrinkas were there. I don't know. I can't tell you. He'll kill me. Who, Robert?
Deputy Morris
Who was it?
Robert
Chandler? Chandler?
Sheriff Trumbull
No. No.
Richard
I think something's going on. His damn cold. And he looks weird.
Robert
Who, Robert? Who gave you the psychoactive? Who told you to do it? I can't tell you. Cold, Robert? I'm all right. All right. It doesn't matter anyway.
Jean
It'll all be over soon.
Sheriff Trumbull
It won't take much more for it.
Robert
To be complete. And it's too late to stop him now. He's too powerful to resist.
Justin
It was.
Richard
It was already.
Robert
He's got some kind of.
Deputy Jeff
Deputy now.
Justin
I get some kind of arrest.
Richard
He's colder than I.
Deputy Jeff
What the hell's going on here? What are you doing to him?
Justin
Call an ambulance.
Deputy Jeff
Man needs immediate medical attention.
Deputy Morris
Do it now.
Deputy Jeff
Damn Rod.
Robert
Call the rescue squad.
Deputy Morris
Straight away. I did not lay them on the horn and tell them to meet us there. Bad things just sort of seem to happen when you fellas are around. We just got word from the hospital. Elliot was pronounced dead on arrival.
Richard
Well, he was dead of the dirt in that cell. Richard was trying to revive him.
Deputy Morris
Yes. Well, you say he just up and had some kind of a fit, was it?
Justin
He just began convulsing. Most violent convulsions I've ever seen in my whole career.
Jean
Unnaturally valid, yes.
Robert
Aye.
Deputy Morris
And you naturally did everything you could to help her until the EMTs arrived. Talking to him about Chandler's murder, you were. You say that during your conversation with him, he didn't seem unusually agitated?
Richard
He was as nervous as a fly in a hot plate in there, Sheriff. But if you're implying that we had anything to do.
Justin
Are you suggesting that we killed him? I was trying to save him. I'm a doctor, for Christ's sake.
Deputy Morris
Hold there now, Dr. Atwater. I'm not implying anything, gentlemen, but I'm not going to sugarcoat it either. It doesn't seem to look real good from where I'm sitting. This fella just up and dying with you two in his cell unsupervised. And all the FBI and all them types got a forensics team in there right now. We'll know more when they are through. The autopsy is complete. But for now, I suggest you fellas make sure you keep yourselves available if you take my meeting.
Jean
So we're free to go?
Deputy Morris
I got your statements here. That's all I need for now. You should be expecting to hear from me, though.
Jean
Come on, Richard.
Deputy Jeff
Bonus. Bonus, huh? Ready to go over to Morgan Fate?
Deputy Morris
Yeah, I think we better start keeping a closer eye on those two. They're all tight lipped and I don't like it. Get a man out of them. See if we can't dig up a little more personal information than this stuff here. I'm going to look in on the circus in the cell real quick and I'll meet you in the. In the Cruise.
Jean
Sam.
Sheriff Trumbull
Interesting, Dr. Hauptman. And very puzzling. How long has he been like this.
Hallie
He began descending into catatonia nearly four days ago.
Jean
Malcolm?
Hallie
It seemed mild enough at that time, but there was no response to any normal stimulants. I put him under observation two days ago and started the IV yesterday. Still the regression continues and its physical state worsens at an ever increasing rate.
Sheriff Trumbull
Still no response. Any ideas on what could have triggered his withdrawal?
Hallie
None as yet. I am afraid this does not reflect.
Jean
Well at all on the abilities and judgment of Dr. Atwater.
Sheriff Trumbull
Richard O' Brien's physical condition was stable, at least. Well, he was under Richard's care and he was communicative. Has your review of this case led you to think that Atwater was incompetent or worse?
Hallie
The case history is a difficult tangle to interpret, Malcolm. And Dr. Chandler's death leaves his accusation of misconduct against Atwater completely unresolved.
Jean
Here, look.
Hallie
These charts include the most recent tests.
Sheriff Trumbull
Just looking here, his state appears to have worsened after George took over. It seems natural to suspect that there was some sort of foul play with Robert. Have you been able to speak with him?
Hallie
No. Unfortunately, I will not be able to either. Mr. Elliot passed away this morning in his cell with Dr. Atwater in attendance.
Richard
Read?
Jean
Yes. Very troubling.
Hallie
I don't know what to think. But I must concern myself first and foremost with the effects of these drugs and substances on Mr. O', Brien, not with who administered them. I cannot afford to wait and see if these mild treatments will eventually bring him around. I fear I may have to resort to more drastic measures.
Sheriff Trumbull
Don't think that aggressive chemical therapy will counteract this regression in time.
Hallie
I am considering.
Jean
Electroshock actually.
Sheriff Trumbull
Seems rather extreme, Doctor.
Hallie
The situation is rather extreme.
Robert
There isn't a lot of leeway in.
Sheriff Trumbull
A course of treatment like this. It might be adversely effective.
Hallie
If I do not act swiftly, he will become a hopeless catatonic regardless. I don't see that I have much choice. Unless you consider surgical options.
Sheriff Trumbull
Well, Doctor, the ultimate decision is yours. Of course, if you really fear that his condition is so critical. Something will have to be done. Whoever is responsible. Aye. I can hardly believe that a man in our profession would do such a thing.
Hallie
I now sever the aorta.
Jean
There.
Hallie
The heart weighs 241.06 grams.
Deputy Morris
Sorry I'm late, Doc. I'm sorry. I don't have much time either. You wouldn't believe the crowd I got down there at the station.
Hallie
I thought you'd send him all here. All these photographers are making me feel like a model.
Deputy Morris
So what can you tell me?
Hallie
Well, not A lot, Pete. Damnlest thing I've ever seen, this one. He seems to be in pretty fair health. And I don't see any nervous disorder in his past history that explained a seizure of this magnitude. Look here. He's bruised himself here and here from thrashing around. These bruises are from the CPR seizure.
Deputy Morris
The cause of death?
Hallie
I wouldn't say that for certain, but I'm not sure what else we've got here.
Deputy Morris
So no history. What induced it? Any needle marks?
Hallie
No, it wasn't injected with anything. And the stomach is clean, too. The one thing that gets me, Pete, is this here.
Deputy Morris
What am I looking at here, Doc?
Hallie
Well, Pete, take a look here and here and here. You see this sort of ashen colored tissue all down in here.
Sheriff Trumbull
Oh, yeah.
Hallie
Well, it doesn't make any sense, but I'd have to say that it looks like frostbite.
Deputy Morris
Frostbite? What the hell could cause that?
Hallie
Search me.
Deputy Jeff
Sheriff, I hate to interrupt, but I got that Atwater information you wanted.
Jean
You're not gonna believe this.
Deputy Morris
Oh, yeah?
Deputy Jeff
Atwater has been suspended from duty at the sanitarium on ethical charges brought up by the late Dr. Chandler. Something about using illegal drugs and such. You're wrong, Morris.
Deputy Morris
I do believe it.
Jean
Official business.
Deputy Morris
Almost sounds like grounds for motive and intent to me. And when you come right down to it, there should have been a lot of trouble around here since Dr. Atwater arrived.
Deputy Jeff
You want him picked up?
Deputy Morris
Oh, yes, Morris, pick him up. Pick him up.
Jean
Yeah. Thanks, Hallie. All right, bye. Well, What Haley have to say?
Justin
Well, she spoke with McLeod who said that Dermot's really relapsed in my absence To a critical point. Haltman is probably planning electroshock treatments as.
Jean
A last ditch effort.
Justin
We've got to get him out of there, Justin.
Robert
He's got all the answers to all.
Jean
Of this in his head. We just have to piece them together.
Richard
You mean bust him out of that?
Jean
Now how are we gonna do that? I don't know.
Justin
We'll have to figure something out. Perhaps some sort of diversion.
Richard
Divert Richard, the place is crawling with the law.
Jean
The FBI, the doc. Hell, it's worse. And Alphabet soup.
Justin
I know, but we can't wait. Whoever was manipulating Robert into switching German's medication is still a threat.
Jean
You heard Robert in that cell. An electric shock.
Justin
Hell, it's barbaric enough, but if someone tampers with that equipment, he could end.
Jean
Up toast or an overcooked vegetable.
Richard
Either way, we can't let that happen. No, speaking of vegetables and toast and soup and whatnot I can't think on.
Jean
This empty stomach anymore. I'm gonna fix me and Po Boy.
Richard
You wanna split it?
Justin
Yeah, actually, that sounds great.
Hallie
I haven't eaten a thing.
Richard
As I see it, we got a major problem already, Richard. What's that? You don't have any hot sauce, Justin. Seriously, though, one of the sheriff's boys has been sitting out in some kind of unmarked police car down the street there. I can see it from here.
Deputy Morris
What?
Richard
Keep down, Richard. He's probably been there since this morning.
Jean
Great.
Justin
I can't believe they suspect us of Robert's murder.
Richard
You know, I got the chilling feeling in there that someone shut him up on purpose. Was that like any seizure you had?
Robert
Had ever seen?
Jean
No.
Richard
You know, his eyes were all icy and creepy. It's almost like. I know, I know.
Justin
Robert's episode is awfully hard to rationalize.
Richard
Well, honestly, I don't think anyone's going.
Jean
To miss good old Robert. But we are in a little deep now. People are dying, don't you?
Justin
We don't have a choice, Justin. Whatever's going on at the sanitarium is just a symptom of something bigger than.
Jean
Sure, it's nothing. Good.
Justin
I'll go up all my folks. I should be in Boston with Dr. Wakefield by now.
Jean
Well, that's good, but not with your mouth for. All right, Mr. Man. Good.
Richard
Damn.
Jean
Brad. Richard. I'll be right back, okay. Deputy Morris. Right. What can I do for you?
Deputy Jeff
Dr. Atwater? I've got a warrant for your arrest. Now just turn around slowly and face the wall.
Jean
Okay.
Justin
What's a charge?
Deputy Jeff
I'm being charged in connection with the death of Robert Elliot.
Jean
I.
Deputy Jeff
Put your left hand behind your back. Where's that card?
Jean
Up there.
Richard
Right here.
Jean
Behind you. Barney. Fire.
Robert
Just a minute.
Richard
All right, don't make no sudden moves.
Jean
Damn.
Richard
You know, I've always wanted to say that. All right, now turn around real slow and keep them hands up high.
Deputy Jeff
Come on. All right.
Justin
Where'd you get that pistol?
Richard
Hell, this is my little squirrel gun. You know, you shouldn't have slammed your car door, Deputy. And you should have parked out of sight.
Deputy Jeff
You're making a big mistake, Carlin. This house is under surveillance. You want me to get out in the driveway?
Richard
I don't think so. So I had me a good look out the windows just now, but in case I'm wrong, we're gonna play hostage.
Jean
Hostage?
Justin
Yeah.
Jean
I make a good criminal, don't I, Richard?
Richard
All right, drop them cuffs and move into the center of the room. I'm not joking. Now, nice and slow.
Jean
Pick up them cuffs, Richard. All right, my deputy.
Richard
You just lay down on your stomach and put your hands behind your back.
Jean
You know how it goes.
Deputy Jeff
Okay. Okay.
Justin
All right.
Deputy Jeff
All right. Excuse me.
Richard
Now save it for the car trip.
Robert
Get down.
Richard
I said.
Jean
Come, Richard. Okay, stay on that side.
Sheriff Trumbull
You're blocking my shots.
Robert
Right.
Jean
Got it. There.
Richard
All right, back away.
Jean
Back away.
Richard
All right, take his gun belt. Just in case he got any of them nasty toys like mace or anything.
Jean
All right.
Richard
All right, Richard, grab his pistol and ammo and get whatever else you need. Hurry up.
Jean
All right.
Robert
Okay, I got it.
Justin
You ready?
Deputy Jeff
Yeah.
Richard
Yeah. All right. Open the door. Step aside. All right, Deputy Dog, let's go.
Jean
Come on.
Richard
Bonnie. Five here is going to lead the way.
Jean
Justin, you're crazy.
Justin
I hope Deputy Morris is going to be okay.
Robert
Will you relax, Richard? Geez, he'll squirm out all of that.
Jean
In a little while.
Justin
How can you be so sure? We probably didn't need to use a.
Jean
Whole roll of duct tape.
Richard
Yeah, we did, let me tell you. Although we could have picked a bigger tree. Well, hell, he'll still have to hike about 12 miles to that little stop and go store. With a little luck, we might have.
Sheriff Trumbull
A few hours stock.
Richard
Now, we need to get us a new ride and ditch this breadcrumb.
Jean
Breadcrumb?
Richard
This car of yours. Did you ever read Hansel and Gretel?
Jean
No.
Richard
We gotta make them think we're headed somewhere else. Gee, sometimes I think you had a deprived childhood, Richard.
Jean
Okay, okay. Let's. Let's see. Hey.
Justin
Gordon Fox is out of town.
Jean
That's right.
Justin
He took the train down to Boston for a conference.
Jean
And he lives close to the station.
Justin
He probably left his car parked at home.
Robert
Not bad, Richard. Not bad.
Richard
You're catching on to all of this. Someday you'll make a fine criminal.
Robert
Thanks, I think.
Richard
Here you go.
Justin
Why do I need a gun?
Richard
Well, I haven't figured that out just yet. But when the time comes, I'll let you know.
Jean
Why do you run from it? Your end is inheritable.
Robert
Acceptance.
Jean
The experience will be real. I don't want to torture you, sir.
Dermot
Brian.
Jean
Really? How predictable. Retiring to the home of your childhood. Because here you learn at the true value they can find. Using corpses as markers. Each death proving the rightness of your cause. Did you quit because it sickened you? Or did you find yourself enjoying it too much? We are not so different, you and I. There. You have nowhere left around. German. Face me, Dermis. Thomas.
Richard
This is not the end.
Jean
Not the end?
Robert
My dream my rules.
Dermot
