Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Oh, Mr. Randall. Oh, yes, yes, he's conscious now and the doctor says you can see him for a few minutes. Right this way, please.
Mr. Randall
Thank you.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
You say his name is Decker?
Mr. Randall
That's what he called himself while he was working for me. Say, Ms. Ellison, do you think I better have the police send someone over here yet?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Oh, no, I hardly think so, Mr. Randall. He can't possibly be moved for some time yet.
Mr. Randall
Is there any danger of Decker not pulling through? The doctor wasn't so sure yesterday.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
I think it's safe to say he'll recover all right. Here we are. Well, how's the patient feeling now?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Better, thanks.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Good. I've got a visitor for you.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Visitor?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Come right in, Mr. Randall.
Mr. Randall
Hello there. Decker.
Bumps
Huh?
Mr. Randall
Don't you know me?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
I can't say as I do.
Mr. Randall
Oh, come on now. This is no way to get out of things, Decker.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
What do you mean?
Mr. Randall
Don't be ridiculous. You know well enough that.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Just a minute, Mr. Randall. The patient only regained consciousness a short time ago. He claims to be. What did you say your name was?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Dugan. Daniel Dugan. Dugan. Those people wouldn't let me talk. Said I must be quiet for a while. How can I be when they say I'm out west? And only last night I was in Baltimore.
Mr. Randall
Baltimore?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
What I can't figure out is what happened.
Mr. Randall
You mind if we talk, Ms. Ellison?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Certainly not, but I'll have to stay in the room.
Mr. Randall
That's perfectly all right. Now, look here, Decker. I mean, Dugan. You claim you were in Baltimore last night.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
I can't figure out what happened. I remember turning the cargo over to the zoo. Official. Cargo?
Mr. Randall
What cargo?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
That shipment I brought up from South America.
Mr. Randall
What are you talking about?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Oh, I got a marvelous collection of birds this trip. I never saw such parrots as we found in the interior. The only unusual animal was a black panther. And did we have a time bagging that baby?
Mr. Randall
What's the last thing you remember?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
I remember turning the shipment over to the authorities. Then I got my check. I had to go back to the waterfront to check with the captain on the boat about. Funny, I don't believe I even got to him.
Mr. Randall
You don't know what Happened, do you?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
The way I feel, I must have been run over by a trolley car.
Mr. Randall
You're sure you don't know me?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Can't say as I do. What is your name?
Mr. Randall
Randall.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Randall. The name's familiar. Oh, I know. Sure. My brother used to work for a man called Randall. You're in a relation to the fellow who owns the Randall Brothers Circus?
Mr. Randall
The relationship is pretty close. I happen to own that circus.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
No, you don't say. Have you heard from Tim Dugan lately? Last I heard of him, he'd gone out west.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Mr. Randall?
Mr. Randall
Yes?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
I'm afraid we'll have to let the patient rest now.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Oh, but please, nurse. Just another few minutes.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
I'm sorry. Doctor's orders.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
You'll come back? Randall, Please do. Something's happened. I, I I've got to get it straightened out. I I don't seem to know anyone around here.
Mr. Randall
I I'll be back. All right, Ms. Ellison.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
I'm ready now. Get a little rest. And if you want anything, ring this bell. Well, what do you think?
Mr. Randall
I don't know what to think. This man is really Daniel Dugan, or
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
he obviously doesn't know yet what's happened to him.
Mr. Randall
What does the doctor say?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Either the man is unbelievably clever, or he's actually suffering from amnesia.
Mr. Randall
Amnesia?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Loss of memory.
Mr. Randall
That would explain it. But why should he think he's someone else? Someone I know of. I thought when people lose their memory, they just forget who they are.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
That's right.
Mr. Randall
But this man's pretending to be someone else.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Well, isn't it possible that he might have been suffering from amnesia before this accident?
Mr. Randall
You mean as Decker? He didn't know anything about his past.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
That's it. And this accident has taken him back to what happened before he became Decker.
Mr. Randall
In that case, he wouldn't remember any
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
of his life as Decker.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
That's it exactly.
Mr. Randall
I think I'd better talk to the doctor.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
I'll take you downstairs then. Here's the elevator. In for all. Please, the doctor is busy, but if you'll wait, I'll send him to you as soon as he finished his rounds.
Mr. Randall
Thank you. You've been very kind.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Oh, not at all.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Main floor.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll leave you here.
Mr. Randall
I'll be in the waiting room. Thank you.
Bumps
Oh, but now, listen, young lady, we've just got to see this.
Mr. Randall
Jerry. What on earth are you two doing around here?
Bumps
Hello, Sam. Didn't expect to run into you.
Jerry Dugan
Hello there, Mr. Randall.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Hello, son.
Bumps
We thought we'd like to see Decker. Is he conscious yet?
Mr. Randall
He's conscious.
Jerry Dugan
Gee, Mr. Randall, you. You said that. Kind of funny. If anything happened, he's gonna get well, isn't he?
Mr. Randall
Ah, he'll get well.
Bumps
What's up, Randall?
Mr. Randall
He doesn't seem to know who he is. You mean he didn't know me? And he doesn't even seem to know who Decker is, does he?
Jerry Dugan
Well, can he talk at all?
Bumps
Oh, yes.
Mr. Randall
Yes, I guess he's in pretty much pain, though, is he?
Jerry Dugan
Ah, gee, Mr. Reynolds, tell me about him. Is he my uncle?
Mr. Randall
Your uncle? What on earth makes you ask that, Jerry?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Well, I.
Jerry Dugan
Well, we. Yesterday, Bumps and me, we came down here and the doctor just taken off his bandage and he was unconscious. Didn't know us.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
But.
Jerry Dugan
But when we saw him, you know, without the bandage, he looked like my uncle. See, I don't know what to think. I'm most crazy, I guess.
Bumps
Yeah, that's true. Sam. The boy's hardly slept all night. I thought he'd never get through with his work this morning. Why, he got so upset.
Mr. Randall
But what made you think. What made you be so sure it was your uncle?
Jerry Dugan
This picture, see? Patsy's father sent it to me. Dad used to have one like this of Uncle Dan. I remember it all right.
Mr. Randall
And looks like Decker all right, without his beard.
Jerry Dugan
You see, it's just gotta be him. Aw, gee, Mr. Ranall.
Mr. Randall
Well, I guess I'd better tell you too. What's happened?
Bumps
It's nothing serious, I hope.
Mr. Randall
No, no, I saw him right after he regained consciousness.
Jerry Dugan
You did?
Mr. Randall
He didn't know me, though. He'd heard of me. He claimed his name is Daniel Dugan.
Jerry Dugan
I knew it. I knew it.
Bumps
Danny Dugan.
Jerry Dugan
But. But how could he have been Decker so long and not know anything about it?
Bumps
Well, I understand that after a person has had. What's the right word for that?
Mr. Randall
Amnesia.
Bumps
That's it. Amnesia. I understand that when they once get back their memory, they forget everything that's happened in between.
Mr. Randall
I'm waiting to talk to the doctor now. But I think you're right, Bumps.
Jerry Dugan
Gee, then you couldn't hold a person responsible for anything they did that was wrong if they didn't know what they were doing, could you?
Mr. Randall
Well, I.
Bumps
Well, now, you just stop worrying, Jerry. You know Mr. Randall to do everything he can. That's fair.
Jerry Dugan
Yes, I. I know.
Mr. Randall
But I'll tell you what I will do, Jerry. I'm going to call the police station and see if they've gotten hold of Lorenz yet. We'll do everything we can to catch that man. He may know more about Danny Dugan than we think.
Bumps
Well, anyway, the money was non Decker. I mean Dugan. So it goes to show Lorenz was the real thief.
Jerry Dugan
He sure was. I just know my uncle didn't want to do such a thing. You think Lorenz could have hypnotized him or something?
Mr. Randall
Well, hardly. But may have had some way of forcing Decker and your uncle to do what he wanted.
Jerry Dugan
You know, Bumps and I said we thought Decker was kind of afraid of Lorenz and.
Mr. Randall
If you two will excuse me, I'll
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
make that phone call.
Mr. Randall
We've got to get Lorenz now. I'll be back in a minute.
Jerry Dugan
I just know my uncle isn't a criminal.
Bumps
Don't you worry, Jerry. When they get Lorenz, we'll learn how all this happened. You'll see.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Are you the two gentlemen that are waiting to see Mr. Dugan?
Jerry Dugan
Yes. Can we see him now?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
If you'll come upstairs with me. The doctor says you may go in for just about five minutes.
Bumps
Mr. Randall was with us. He just went to make a phone call.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
That's all right. I'm sending the doctor right down to him. I'll have him tell Mr. Randall where you are.
Bumps
Well, thank you. Thank you, nurse.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Do we take the elevator?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Yes. Step right in. Third floor, please.
Jerry Dugan
Is Mr. Dugan gonna be sick long?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
He's had a pretty bad accident. He'll be up and around about a month.
Jerry Dugan
A whole month in bed?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Well, that's not so long after being almost killed.
Bumps
Third floor.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Here we are. First door on the left. Now, try not to get the patient excited.
Jerry Dugan
Can I go right in?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
Oh, yes, of course. Hello there, Mr. Dugan. Well, you're pretty popular this morning. I've got a couple of more visitors.
Bumps
Hello.
Jerry Dugan
Hello.
Bumps
Well, I am Bumps with the Randall Brothers Circus.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Bumps. Bumps, of course. Sure, I saw you when you and Tim were. Sure thing. I'm glad to see an old friend. Your boy.
Bumps
No, no, Danny, this is Jerry. Jerry, Tim's boy.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
No, no. I can't believe it.
Jerry Dugan
I'm Jerry Dugan. All right.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
What is this? Tim's boy is only a baby. What are you telling me? This is a poor kind of a joke to play on a sick man?
Jerry Dugan
We're not playing a joke.
Bumps
Well, Danny, you think you're feeling well enough to talk?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
For heaven's sake, tell me what this is all about.
Bumps
Well, now, just take it easy. Well, you see, you've evidently lost your memory.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
For some time I've been sick.
Bumps
You mean a long, long time. I guess Much longer than you realize.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
For heaven's sakes, man, tell me what has happened.
Bumps
We don't quite know, but it's been years now.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
I can't believe it. Years. Years. Dropped right out of my life. I. I haven't just come back from South America?
Bumps
No, I'm afraid not, Dugan.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
But where have I been? Not in the hospital all this time?
Bumps
No.
Jerry Dugan
Golly, it must seem funny.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Come here, son. You say you're Jerry Dugan?
Jerry Dugan
Yes, sir.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Are you with the circus too?
Jerry Dugan
I sure am.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
So your dad's back in the circus business. Funny thing. I thought he'd given it up.
Bumps
Well, no, Dad's not well, Jerry. Never mind now. I think Dugan's had quite enough for one day.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
What do you mean? What is it?
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
You'd better finish. As long as you've gone that far.
Bumps
Well.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Out with this boy. What is it?
Jerry Dugan
Dad died just a few weeks ago.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
No. Died? Damn, I.
Bumps
Now, just take it easy, old man.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
And this is his boy, Jerry.
Jerry Dugan
I'd begun to think I never would find the Uncle Dan.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
So you're working with the circus? Well, son, as soon as I get on my feet, I'm gonna take care of you.
Ms. Ellison (Nurse)
I'm sorry, but you've already been here more than five minutes.
Bumps
Yes, of course, Nurse.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Well, we'll go. How long do you play in this town?
Bumps
Oh, another couple of days.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Oh, we'll be back tomorrow.
Jerry Dugan
You bet. Can I bring rags?
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Rags?
Jerry Dugan
My dog.
Daniel Dugan (Decker)
Oh, of course, your dog. No wonder I don't know about your dog. Or you or Tim.
Jerry Dugan
Well, goodbye. Goodbye, Uncle Dan.
