Rest of the Story It's Saturday nights. Very late Saturday night. A stiff March wind, disgusting across the campus of Lakeway High School. Now Lakeway, Missouri is a tiny town nestled in the Ozarks. Nothing but dairy, cattle and wooded hills for miles around Lake Way High. Occasionally a deer might graze on the school's baseball field. Otherwise there's not much happening thereabouts. Except on one Saturday night in March. Right now is that night. A handful of students waiting to board a bus. Science students. The bus will drive them off into the darkness at one minute past midnight. That's how it's been planned. Precisely one minute past 12. What these high schoolers say they're doing is academic. They say they are journeying to Rockhurst College, some six hours away to compete in a multi state science exhibition. What they're really doing is the rest of the story. By traveling to Rockhurst, the science team of Lakeway High is honoring five teachers. Teachers whom they consider the best of their profession. Five of their own teachers. Little Lake Way High might as well have stayed home tonight, many believe. I say Little Lake Way High there are only 187 students, grades nine through 12. And these are country kids. But they're formidable competition for any high school students that you know. Even the town's elementary school is remarkable. The the town's elementary school has a chess team. And that chess team boasts the number five player in the state, the number three player in the state, and the number one player in all of the schools in Missouri. But when the Lakeway High School science team gets on that bus bound for Rockhurst College, this is more than an academic exercise. This is homage to the five teachers who nurtured and guided and motivated so many Lakeway pupils to undreamed of excellence at the science fair in Rockhurst, many are saying that Lake Way High does not have a chance. After all, the school system has dumped millions of dollars into the recently opened Kansas City Math and Science Magnet School. They are the best there is Many agree, particularly in science. But win or lose, the Lakeway science team will be on that bus bound for Rockhurst at one minute past midnight on a Saturday in March, as they have been for the past two years. And the winning or the losing will be secondary to honoring those five wonderful high school teachers who incidentally will not be along for the ride. You see Lakeway High School, whose science labs are 20 years out of date, whose equipment works Only sometimes little 187 student Lakeway High two years ago received a hundred thousand dollar budget cut. And as a result, those five splendid teachers were fired. So the Lakeway science team, without a prayer of winning the multi state competition, has gone anyway as a tribute to those teachers who inspire them even yet. And by the way, for these past two years in Rockhurst, the Lakeway High School science team has vanquished the big Kansas City math and science magazine magnet school. And without those teachers whose salaries were diverted to the public schools of Kansas City. And now you know the rest of the story.
