Truth is stranger than fiction, and this is the proof. This is Ripley. Believe it or not, Gentleman Jim Corbett was the first great exponent of cleverness. Inside the rope here is testimony to his remarkable skill. Jim fought in the prize ring for 18 years and never had a black eye or a bloody nose. Believe it or not, in a moment, I'll tell you about a bloody war that was fought over the sex of a bear. A bear is the emblem of the two neighboring Swiss cantons of Appenzell and St. Gall. In 1579, Saint Gall published an almanac in which they described their own emblem as a male bear and the Appenzell bear as a female. Appenzell demanded that their neighbors retract this insult. Saint Gall refused, and costly battles were fought for two years. Thousands died before Saint Gall solemnly declared that the bear on their neighbor's emblem was a male. Believe it or not.
