Yvonne Constance

Ed McMahon
I know where San Angelo, Texas is. I appeared there once at the Miss Wool. That's right. Was that the Miss World? San Angelo? What Miss World? I thought it was when I was headed there, but it turned out to be the Miss Wool contest. Some kind of a mix up. What? You are Miss Texas also? Yes. The fellow next door said you're Miss Texas. Mills Brothers

Yvonne Constance

Ed McMahon
No, no. Sorry. How does that go?
Yvonne Constance
But it's better than mine, though. I'll tell you.
Ed McMahon
All right. How's yours, Squirrel?
Yvonne Constance
Mr. Finnegan.
Ed McMahon
Catchy song. Doesn't it have a melody at all?
Yvonne Constance
I'm never so happy to have laryngitis in my life.
Ed McMahon
Can't you give us a little idea? You can sing, surely.
Yvonne Constance
Poor old Mr. Finnegan had grew whiskers on his.
Ed McMahon
Maybe you just better recite it. We'll accept that anyway. We'll accept anything and have. How would you like to have dinner at the famous Harlow's on East 79th street, huh?
Yvonne Constance
Thank you very much.
Ed McMahon
You're very welcome. And there's a copy of the book. All right. Thank you, Miller. First guest this evening was with us, with me for the first time when we were out in California. And I have a great deal of admiration for this gentleman. As millions of people do throughout the world. Would you welcome, please, Mr. Barry Goldwater.
Senator Goldwater
I think I'll move.
Ed McMahon
The distressing. Goldwater says, I think I'll move to this precinct. You don't by any chance have an album out, do you? We had Senator Dirksen here Friday. He was plugging his album. I thought maybe you recorded an album or something.
Senator Goldwater
He preempted all the Republican possibilities.
Ed McMahon
It's nice to see you again. I figure lovely wife Peggy is with you this evening. You are, I forgot to mention, also back here to do some speaking engagements with service men, right?
Senator Goldwater
Yes, a little bit.
Ed McMahon
Have you. Are you enjoying that?
Senator Goldwater
Very much. I always enjoy visiting with the service people, particularly the enlisted men.
Ed McMahon
We. We did something tonight. Did anybody tell Mr. Goldwater about this? We handed out some cards as people came in tonight and as we often do on the show when they want to ask me questions. We thought it might be nice if they wish to answer. Ask you some questions tonight. Would you like to field a few of them? Why sure, if. If you don't want to answer any of them. Why so?
Senator Goldwater
My wife didn't submit any.
Ed McMahon
I don't think I saw anyone in here from her. Judy Kurtz. Where are you, Judy?
Yvonne Constance
Right here.
Ed McMahon
Since you're a new father in law, will you give your special formula for being a good father in law?
Senator Goldwater
Well, both of my sons in law have periods when they don't think I'm a good father in law. I think the best thing is to leave them alone. Just come over when they ask you for a drink.
Ed McMahon
That's not fair. Mariva Hirschberger, I believe the name is. Are you prepared for a tuba solo tonight? That's right. You do play the tuba, do you not?
Senator Goldwater
Well, I made a mistake about two years ago. I bet my sister in law that I could play Silent Night on the trombone on Christmas Eve. And I learned to do that and that appeared on monitor and I've received a tuba, a valve bugle, the bagpipes and a French horn.
Ed McMahon
Here's Madeline Whitten, I believe she says, can you tell us your most amusing experience with your ham radio? As most of you I'm sure know, the senator is a. Is a ham radio operator and keeps in contact with a good many servicemen and relays messages all over the world. She says, amusing experience.
Senator Goldwater
Amusing. Oh, that would be hard to pick out. I think a happy experience. The happiest ones I have is when I make run phone patches with men in the service overseas and they're told about new babies or about happy occurrences in the family. And that always makes me happy. And I Know it makes them happy too.
Ed McMahon
It must be great to be a part of that and be able to tell them something and hear their reaction.
Senator Goldwater
It's real fun.
Ed McMahon
What do you think of the miniskirts?
Senator Goldwater
Well, it depends where you are now. In Las Vegas, they just quit wearing them.
Ed McMahon
Here's one here at the Warren Lambert. Two years ago, while visiting Mountain Shadows near your home, I backed into a cactus plant. Is there anyone I can sue? The puncture has been repaired. However, I still have the memory.
Senator Goldwater
No, I think sewing would be better than suing.
Ed McMahon
Yes, I thought, well, that's beautiful country down there. It is lovely, lovely country. Somebody says it's sweet 16 birthday. Here's a political question. But if you don't want to get any, it says give reasons why you chose the Republican Party instead of another political party.
Senator Goldwater
Well, that's kind of hard to remember. That goes back a long time. But my mother was a Republican and we two formed the only Republican team in the whole Goldwater family. My uncle having founded the Democratic party in the territory of Arizona. So I just started out when I was 21 as a Republican and I've been one ever since.
Ed McMahon
Senator, it's such a pleasure always to have you with us. Give our best to your family and please come back and see us anytime you'd like. Thank you. Thank you. Here three gentlemen have been singing together for quite a number of years. I think they started with their with their father leading a group out in Ohio. And they've done just about everything in the entertainment world. You all know them. Would you welcome please the Mills Brothers.
Mills Brothers

So we go to the first one tonight for Sammy K. Hey, hey, hey it's the best one she got you the ring Last way baby Mr. Les Brown can make it right now and A Anthony, you're rocking on me. Senator Goldwater
I'm hacking my brain to think of a name to give to this tune so Perry can true let me be.
Mills Brothers
Open we'll give it a name and.
Senator Goldwater
I will start everyone up and a.
Mills Brothers

Senator Goldwater

Mills Brothers

Ed McMahon
Oh boy you fellas are like an old wine. You get. You get better with the years, you know.
Senator Goldwater
Oh boy. Thank you, God.
Ed McMahon
How many years has it been?
Senator Goldwater
Shall we talk about that?
Ed McMahon
Come on.
Senator Goldwater
Well, we didn't come over on the Mayflower, but unless you're getting ready.
Ed McMahon
You were standing here waiting for. No, it's been about what?
Senator Goldwater
Long time ago.
Ed McMahon
We just. 40 years.
Senator Goldwater
40 years?
Ed McMahon
Less six weeks ago we celebrated fourth year. 40 years.
Senator Goldwater
Well, Norman.
Ed McMahon
Norman joined us in 1936, so that's.
Senator Goldwater
Quite a few years too.
Ed McMahon
A drifter, huh? Norman? One job, 30 years and he'll leave you. You guys are. We haven't seen you for about a couple years. No.
Senator Goldwater
You're singing this trip?
Ed McMahon
No, I'm gonna let you handle. I'm a little touch of laryngitis is all.
Senator Goldwater
Oh, is that so?
Ed McMahon
I hurt the group.
Senator Goldwater
Well, not only that, I understand we're going to do a little song that Milton Deluge wrote here a few years ago. We did? Did you know that?
Ed McMahon
Are you gonna do one of Milton's?
Senator Goldwater
Yeah, I thought maybe you would know it.
Ed McMahon
We ought to mention at least where you're at. You're out at the Sansam.
Senator Goldwater
That's right. Till Thursday anyway.
Ed McMahon
Which is out at around Minneola on Long Island. So go out.
Senator Goldwater
You got a pretty memory.
Ed McMahon
You betcha. What is this song that you. Which one? Which one of the book is it?
Senator Goldwater
Well, he wrote it about 19. What, 40, 42, something like that. It's called Be my life's Companion.
Ed McMahon
Milton didn't force you. I know. I want you to do this song. This wasn't part of the deal, was it?
Barry Goldwater
Yeah.
Senator Goldwater
Oh, we worked up to this, you know. We seen. It was quite a surprise. We haven't seen it for a long time.
Ed McMahon
I would love to hear it because I know you guys got to go back to work. So let's still make it two years again, huh? Okay. What?
Mills Brothers
No silver threads among the gold. What? No silver threads among the gold. What? No silver thread.
Ed McMahon
What?
Mills Brothers
Some action instead.
Ed McMahon
What?
Mills Brothers
No silver threads among the gold. Be my life's companion. And you'll never go home. I love, love you so much that you'll never go. When there's joy in living, you just living. You've got to stay young cause you never grow old. People who are old, they can't be old at 33. Don't let it happen to you. I don't let it happen to me. Believe my life's companion. And you never go home. You'll never go home. No, you never go home. Loving you whenever happiness for yours to have it all will be my life's companion. And you never grow. I don't want man alone. Don't let it happen to you and don't let it happen to me. My life. I love you so much that you'll never at all loving you and the happiness for your.
Ed McMahon
You'll never meet three nicer guys than those 40 years singing together. Can you imagine? That's Harry, Herb and Don. She's smooth. They hold up nothing. He here's a good friend of ours. Would you welcome please, Ms. Yvonne Constant. Quick, Henry, the slip zip.
Barry Goldwater
I beg your pardon?
Ed McMahon
That is. That's metal. Is.
Barry Goldwater
I'm all metallic tonight.
Ed McMahon
Doesn't that itch next to the skin?
Barry Goldwater
Where?
Ed McMahon
Who? Well, I mean now this is metal. The stockings.
Barry Goldwater
Outside maybe, but inside, no.
Ed McMahon
Ah, that's it. You see anybody?
Barry Goldwater
I mean, I. I don't know. I don't feel it. What is. What is out inside?
Ed McMahon
This doesn't matter. You explain it maybe.
Barry Goldwater
Yes, if you do that. But I didn't do that. So I.
Ed McMahon
I don't know why I ask questions like that. I go no place.
Barry Goldwater
No, but it's. It's a crazy outfit. I know. I don't usually do such things, but I thought one for once it would be funny. It is funny for me to see that looks like a costume. But after all, I'm used to costumes.
Ed McMahon
That's right. You're in a rehearsal now for a play, aren't you?
Barry Goldwater
Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes. Play with Soupy Sales and we have be on Broadway. Yeah, it's very funny, really. We have a good time.
Ed McMahon
It's very show is called Come. Come Live With Me.
Barry Goldwater
Come Live with Me.
Ed McMahon
Is it fair to say, does it look good? Is it going to be a hit?
Barry Goldwater
Oh, well, of course it looks good. But you know, is it going to be a hit? It's like someone who wants to marry you and ask you are you going to be here in 12 years from now?
Ed McMahon
You know what? No.
Barry Goldwater
You start something, you are full of hope, of faith. That's what you start in. In the first place. But you signed a contract for an opening night. You don't sign for a closing night. You don't know when you hope. It will be always there, of course.
Ed McMahon
But you.
Barry Goldwater
So it looks good? Yes.
Ed McMahon
Is it funny?
Barry Goldwater
I will. I hope so. Yes. When I watch it, it is funny.
Ed McMahon
Yeah.
Barry Goldwater
Will you come and see it?
Ed McMahon
Yes.
Barry Goldwater
You're not sure? I.
Ed McMahon
No, I didn't. No, I didn't mean that. I'll. I'LL come and see it. Yeah, well, Suki's been on the show. We've talked about it.
Barry Goldwater
Yeah, he's always full of jokes. He has so many jokes. My goodness, it's something. Yes.
Ed McMahon
You're a single girl, aren't you?
Barry Goldwater
Yeah, Well, I didn't.
Ed McMahon
Well, I didn't mean it disparagingly or anything like that. I mean, you are.
Barry Goldwater
No, but it was sudden. I didn't expect that, that's all. That's why I took the time. Yes, I'm single. Yes. Yes. So.
Ed McMahon
Right.
Barry Goldwater
So.
Ed McMahon
So nothing. So you're single. It's not my fault. All I meant was.
Barry Goldwater
Nobody's fault. I am because I want to.
Ed McMahon
Oh.
Barry Goldwater
You see, I wasn't always.
Ed McMahon
Oh, well, I didn't mean to. I didn't mean. I didn't mean to pry. Now, you know, I would never try to say anything would make you feel uncomfortable.
Barry Goldwater
No, no, I feel comfortable.
Ed McMahon
Would you. Would you like to get married again sometime? You want to think it over for a week and come back, win a cookie? No, what I meant is. I mean.
Barry Goldwater
Oh, no, I think that everybody should be married. Don't you?
Ed McMahon
No.
Barry Goldwater
You don't think so?
Ed McMahon
No, not everybody.
Barry Goldwater
Well, people who don't. Oh, I don't like to be alone. This I don't like. You know. I mean, I'm not someone who is completely fulfilled by my career or my acting possibilities and. No, not at all. If I don't have someone to go home to at night and say what I've been doing, I'm not pleased at all. I have to talk. I have to say what I've been doing. I have to hear what the other one has been doing.
Ed McMahon
Who do you talk to now? You just go home and.
Barry Goldwater
To a rabbit? No, I talk to. I don't know. I. I talk. I mean, I talk to.
Ed McMahon
You have a rabbit?
Barry Goldwater
Yes. No. No, I don't have. But you say. Whom do I talk to?
Ed McMahon
What quality would you look for in a man? Not that you're looking. No, I'm not saying that you're looking to get married at all. But what. What?
Barry Goldwater
I mean, physically.
Ed McMahon
Is it. Yeah. I'll handle this interview, if you don't mind, sir. The guy up in the. Yeah. Well, physical. Physical.
Barry Goldwater
Because that's the way you start.
Ed McMahon
You see someone, of course. Naturally. The first.
Barry Goldwater
You don't hear someone. First you see someone, huh?
Ed McMahon
Well, unless they're yelling across the street or something and you turn around and say what? You might hear them and be attracted by a voice. All right. Of Course, the nap. When two people meet physically, they look at each other and say, hey, hey, look at that. Or whatever, you know, isn't that pretty? Or Isn't she lovely? Or, isn't he tall? Isn't he fat?
Barry Goldwater
No, no, no. You see, and you. I mean, you look and you see. I know very well what the possibilities are.
Ed McMahon
I don't quite understand that.
Barry Goldwater
Oh, you know, if you can stop and, you know, if you can go on looking. No, it takes half an hour. It takes like this to know.
Ed McMahon
Oh, you believe in that? If you see somebody right away.
Barry Goldwater
Well, at first, you see, then you have to. To listen. Of course, if you are not interested in the conversation, oh, you say, my goodness, I made a mistake. But if you like the talk, then you look and you hear and you listen. Then it's two chances. It's a pretty good start.
Ed McMahon
No, no, that's. That. That's good. Tomorrow night. Oh. Your play opens in New Haven. Come live with me. Not to be confused with the Chinese movie. Come drink. Come drink with me. A lot of people are going to make that mistake. I'll drink with that. What? I'll drink. Yes, you'll drink anything, won't you? Rutabagas, fish, anything. Tomorrow night we have. Am I. Am I getting off too early? Leaving kind of early tonight? Oh, all right. Tomorrow night, Norm Crosby, Anita Gillette, and New York Times funny science editor Walter. Walter Sullivan will be with. This is the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
