Narrator
True stories of people and places. Priceless treasures or humble keepsakes. Each with a beginning, none with an ending. The reason they vanish without trace. In central India, a girl is dancing. Her name, Putli. Her destiny to become a legend. The date? February 3rd, 1951. Graceful, sensuous, subtle. Each movement of the girl's body is reflected in the highly polished mosaic floor, in the eyes of the wedding guests seated at the tables around her. And also in the smile of a man standing in the shadows of the darkened doorway.
Putli
She has the beauty and the grace of the green reeds of the river. The men are impatient with waiting leader Babu. She is a jewel among jewels. I said the men are becoming impatient, master. Then they will be all the more eager to work when I give them the order, will they not? And when will that be? When this dance has ended. Never must I work interfere with the creation of art.
Narrator
Destiny swings slowly on the pendulum of time. But at this moment, swinging to the slow, graceful rhythm of a girl who has the power to hold the attention of people above her cast of wedding guests far above her station.
Putli
Wonderful. The creation of magic. You are the flower of the east, my pretty one.
Sultan Gujar
But you s are not one of the wedding guests.
Putli
Babu, my lieutenant, he will introduce me. Girl. You will not call her girl. Your name, child?
Sultan Gujar
Goodly, sire. But the guests, they are showing anger. If you stay, harm could fall heavily on your shoulders.
Putli
Then, my dear one, Babu will introduce me also to the guests. Babu, your duty. Please, everyone be seated. Sultan Gujar commands silence. Sultan Gujar? Some called me a bandit. I prefer the title adventurer.
Sultan Gujar
Then you have come to rob the wedding guests.
Putli
My little dancing flower. You will observe that my men have entered by the windows and are concluding that cause tomorrow. So now I came. The greatest prize of all. Come, we go.
Sultan Gujar
Let go of my hand.
Putli
Don't be ridiculous, my child. Can't you see that you are being kidnapped?
Narrator
Kidnapped? And the price of ransom? 150 English pounds. A small sum perhaps. But to the parents of Putli, it is a fortune. One that takes Five hard working months to collect, to obtain and finally present the feet of the bandit king.
Sultan Gujar
145. 150 English pounds.
Narrator
Yes, exactly.
Putli
The final penny. Good.
Narrator
Very good.
Sultan Gujar
Now I will take back my daughter Babu.
Putli
The daughter of nemi. I go. £150. You work long hours, mother Nemi.
Sultan Gujar
I speak with only my daughter.
Putli
So shall it be, Mother. Nami. Your daughter, Putli. As you can see, she is unharmed.
Sultan Gujar
You are well, Putli? I am well, mother. That is good. Now we will go. Come. But mother, I can't. I have paid the ransom money. You are free to go. But I'm not free, mother. What do you mean, child? Sultan Gujar. You stole it. I love this man. He has taken my heart.
Narrator
Hootle sees the small, frail but proud little figure of a mother walk into the shadows of the jungle trail. Love has made Putle an outcast. And that night she turns her large limpid eyes towards the lights of the cities.
Putli
You have regrets, my little flower?
Sultan Gujar
For 20 years I love my mother. And now I love you. Oh, the lights of the cities look so warm and friendly. When you know they're no longer yours.
Putli
We go back to the camp, Sultan.
Sultan Gujar
Why is it that sadness and happiness can never hold hands?
Putli
Ah, you are still the innocent child. But soon we shall carve for ourselves a kingdom. One worthy people will call you queen. Come, we go.
Narrator
Devotion. The doorstep of love. And Pudli learns to ride with his Sultan on his raiding parties. She develops a prowess for planning. And soon is organizing every raid the Sultan intends to execute. The banded horde sees their wealth increasing, becomes more daring, plans bigger raids. Until on an evening in December 1952, in the hotel of Bhopal, central India.
Hotel Clerk
You were wishing a room, madam.
Sultan Gujar
A suite. But that door behind you, it leads to your strong room.
Hotel Clerk
Yes, and a very good one. We are proud of the safe we have in there.
Sultan Gujar
Well, I have many valuables. These jewels I wish you to put in the safe immediately.
Hotel Clerk
Yes, madam. I will open the door to the.
Sultan Gujar
Strong room and put my jewels inside the shade.
Hotel Clerk
Certainly. If you will pardon my back while I turn the combination. Now, let me see.
Putli
Like so.
Hotel Clerk
So there we are now.
Putli
And here am I. Madam, you cannot come in here.
Sultan Gujar
Then I shall not embarrass you by staying alone. And this pistol in my hand just in case you should feel prey.
Narrator
I.
Hotel Clerk
I cannot stop you.
Sultan Gujar
Oh, you cannot? Sultan. You may come in now.
Putli
P. You are a wonderful woman. The plan is working to perfection.
Sultan Gujar
It will not be perfection if you don't hurry. A policeman passes the hotel every 10 minutes. We have only three minutes left.
Putli
So I pack all the jewels into this bag and then we go.
Narrator
Boutlee watches the money and jewels with a fortune slowly begin to fill the chamois leather bag. Then, with only seconds to spare, they leave the bound and gagged Clark to be found by the police. But Bootle's plan is too perfect. She and Sultan Kajar are running to time. But the policeman on night duty is running early.
Putli
Come, come. We we go fast P In the.
Sultan Gujar
Doorway Sultan get out of sight.
Putli
One policeman does not frighten me. I I show you what I do with him Portly. I I I got him just like I said I wouldn't.
Sultan Gujar
Get to your feet. Something you've got to try so we can. Goodbye, Sultan.
Narrator
The former dancing girl walks into the quiet darkness of the Indian night. Leaving the still form of her lover, she returns to the jungle. But Putly knows there is no life for her in the city. Finally, she decides to form her own band of bandits. And so begins a three year reign of terror throughout central India. Created by a former dancing girl, a young woman who within three years builds up a fortune and becomes a legend. And the reason for the legend? The District Commissioner of Jaipur described it in precise tones. He stands in front of a wall map one on which colored pins indicate the location of every one of Putli's remains raids.
Putli
And there you have it, gentlemen. Every one of the jungle queens raids up until June 14th last year. And since they're nothing. The woman seems to have completely vanished. She's made no other rage since last June, eh? No. Some of her former bandits have appeared from time to time. But after three years of terrorism, our precious Pootly seems to have disappeared. We haven't been able to find a trace of her in months. But I say sir, we do have police informers. Thousands of them. Surely they can tell us something. No, they can find out nothing. I don't understand it. How could a woman like Putley just up and vanish, sir? Well, it could be that she made one mistake, Captain. Quite simple for a woman like Pootley. I don't understand them. Each man Putly chose to be a member of her band of terrorists was an admirer. An admirer? Yes, Captain. At some time each of those men prior to joining her band had, well, asked for her hand. And that was her mistake. Well, Pootley apparently believed in an old saying. But proverbs are so often proved wrong. How do you mean, sir? Pootley apparently thought that there was safety in numbers. But she didn't allow for the jealousy that can build up inside a man. And with almost a dozen jealous men around her, Pootley may have seen the folly of her mistake and voluntarily chosen to disappear. Or, on the other hand, she may have been killed in a lover's quarrel. It's a pity we may never really know. It would make our record so much more tidy. Well, that's all for now, gentlemen. Good night.
Narrator
The mystery of the disappearing bandit still remains unsolved. Had Bootley made a fatal mistake in choosing only men who admired her as the entire force of a bandit band? Or was this another cunning plan of Pootley's? Was this what she wanted the men of the police to believe? That answer may never be learned, because each bandit had taken an oath, one that even death wouldn't allow him to break. Only these few elusive shadows of the night can tell us how Pootly bandit Queen of India, after instituting a reign of terror that lasted three full years, suddenly and inexplicably vanished without trace. Listen again for another true life drama in the fascinating series Vanished Without Trace. This is an Artranza program written by John Warrick and produced by Jim Bradley.
